Black & White vs Color

Okay, so I know that it's much cheaper to print in black and white than it is in color, and that this factor is really important both for keeping printing costs low and, therefore, for being able to sell a less expensive product.

However, what are the benefits to keeping black and white for the pdf versions of a product? I guess it's cheaper to commission b&w art, but what about something as simple as power templates and matching the at-will/encounter/daily power heading colors?

Also, what about print-on-demand publishing? Does color raise the consumer's price too high, or is it still a matter of commissioning color art?

Greyscale is still the way to go, even in PDFs because it saves your consumer the cost of printing out the PDF in full color themselves. Quite a few companies used to (not sure about any more) put out a greyscale and full color version of the same book in a ZIP file, but I find that if you use colors which can easily print in greyscale, it's just as good.

Paying for black-and-white art is also another reason and there is a significant jump for POD in color. If I remember correctly, a POD I was looking at would cost me $12 to print greyscale versus $28 in color.

A massive difference. Although whether that's "too high" depends on a lot of things!
