Greetings!

(First post on these amazing forums! Have lurked a little too long!)

Unfortunately, as usual it is to ask for help...

I have recently bought all five of the 3.5ed Monster Manuals.
I now have a desire to easily create custom encounter tables for any environment.

In order to prevent me having to manually type in every single monster and it's environment, I was hoping someone somewhere would have already created some kind of index by environment.

But I have not been able to find one anywhere!

Does anyone know of one? Really it needs to be in a table format or something so I can move it around in a spreadsheet!

Bows are usually kept unstrung, correct? If you go hunting, or you expect trouble, you get ready and string the thing. Maybe knock an arrow without making the pull yet. This is like pulling your steel from the sheath.

But, what would you do, as GM, if the bow were never unstrung?

And, how long is too long for a bow to be strung?

I'm converting a 2e module for my 3.5e game. I don't have a lot of experience with 2e monsters, but apparently there is a size difference between a 2e Very Young Bronze Dragon and a 3.5 Very Young Bronze Dragon.

Normally, I wouldn't care and I would just use the 3.5 version. But in this scenario, the dragon's size is supposed to make a bit of an impression and cause the PCs to consider their next move based on this intimidating creature guarding a cavern.

A medium sized dragon chained to the floor and forced to guard this cavern just isn't intimidating enough. But, the PCs will be roughly 6-7th level by then and a large bronze dragon may be too high of a CR for them. Especially because dragons play as a lot higher CR than they actually are.

The color of the dragon isn't that important. I could settle on a large sized dragon, but I would prefer a huge.

Is there a large or huge sized dragon that could be a fair encounter for a 6-7th level party? Or are there any tricks to handicap a higher CR monster so it plays legitimately as a lower level CR? It could have a birth defect or something and completely work with the original story behind its presence there.

So, our Dm gave us a nice challenge and I've been studying some interesting options. I'd love to hear some opinions and suggestions from you "pros" and any newbie like me who wants to take part in the fun.

We're going through a normal 3.5 mini-campaign. Just something to warm two new players to the game, our next one will be run in Pathfinder and it will have a much less serious tone. It'll be laid-back and fun-oriented, as such, this is the plan:

The party will be made-up by only Bards, and she allowed us to pick pretty much any race. There are no home-brewed special abilities, something we often use to tweak our charas BUT, we were told to tweak and improve our instruments. As an example, on a previous campaign, our bard had his guitar reinforced w a metal plate which read "PWNED" so he could use it as a blunt weapon.

Now, I've been considering three classes, Aasimar, Dhampir and Goblin. I'm definitely leaning towards a mariachi-kind of bard, and I'll likely take the guitar as my main instrument. The aasimar and dhampir looked good, and seeing as how we know we'll have a npc w us, who is a Drow, I thought that a more human-like bard would be useful, however....the image of a goblin mariachi trying to flirt with barmaids while jumping on the table and putting up a show is...quite something.

The Aasimar is pretty straight forward, and seeing as how a few can go "bad", it wouldn't be too troublesome to make it a cool chara. The Dhampir...while I'd love to play one, the whole negative energy affinity is troublesome, meaning I won't be able to heal in battle easily and won't beable to carry potions.

Any suggestions you guys have? We're to start around lvl 7, not sure about the starting gold and/or equip yet.

I'm about to dip my toe into the DMing waters - 3rd time's the charm?

I'm hoping to find an adventure module or AP (3.5 or Pathfinder) which can easily be refluffed (& to some extent recrunched) to fit the details of the game world I have planned. The main essentials [w/ thoughts on desired characteristics in a module]:

- 3.5 or Pathfinder

- an Ice Age world. [Anything that doesn't depend on hot climates or jungles for story could probably be retooled for this, though.]

- society fairly 'Dark Ages'. The great wonders of the past age are distant memories, & finding relics from that culture is a path to fortune... or death. [Magepunk out. High fantasy magic out.]

- low- to medium-magic: probably using some version of spell points/vitality coast, lots of banned types of magic (any sort of teleport, any sort of summoning, probably any sort of polymorph or at least very restricted). [See last point.]

- melee classes have some degree of access to Tome of Battle maneuvers (w/ same restrictions as magic, i.e. no teleport, etc.). [Probably easy to add, just may need to bump encounters up a bit.]

- no other planes exist (although it's at least possible that the races of the world may believe that they do). [Planar travel out. Fluff relating to other planes at least flexible enough to be retooled.]

So far I've heard of the Slumbering Tsar Saga - the feel of the Desolation is spot on, but there would be a LOT of retooling needed to remove the extraplanar references (& I've only reviews to go on, haven't seen the module itself to have any idea just how difficult that might be). Anyone have other suggestions?

I am making an investigative skill challenge for my group's next adventure. The village Dunneebrook is reported to have been sacked by the Wild Hunt and the PCs can go there to search for clues.

In Robin Laws' GUMSHOE system "core clues" are automatically acquired so long as the PC uses an appropriate skill to discover them - no role is needed. There are also "secondary clues" which can provide extra information or benefit - these can be acquired by spending points from a point pool (which represent some kind of investigative resource). The GUMSHOE system was meant to address the problem of "the clue that the players missed" grinding gaming sessions to a halt.

I like this approach and want to translate it to my skill challenge.

My idea is to set up areas of investigation within the sacked village - using a skill in a plausible way automatically gets that area's "core clue". Additional clues are possible in many areas but getting them involves some kind of risk (i.e. a skill check with consequences for failure). A failed check might mean a Red Herring, a hard to interpret clue which casts doubt on the "core clue", a hazard in the area like a collapsing roof, a scavenger monster attacking, the PC falling and getting separated from the party, etc.

Does this sound like a feasible adaptation of GUMSHOE for 4e? Does this model makes the overall victory / defeat in the skill challenge moot? Any bright ideas for how to make this skill challenge awesome?
