| I voted for the Gnomes. I've never played either race but it comes down to one simple fact: Someone with Prestidigitation is automatically cooler than someone without. Disagreeing with this automatically guarantees a little prestidigitated "accident" in your pants. Probably at a time that will be incredibly socially awkward. Remember, soiled objects remain that way for one hour. |

| I voted Halfling, because in the most worlds i like them much more
than the gnomes.
In Eberron the situation is switched. These coloUrful Gnomes
are what I allways wanted them to be like.

| Halfling should get the nod. They've been in D&D from the beginning (when they were hobbits). Plus, my first D&D character was a halfling.

| Gnomes don't have a niche. Everyone keps messing with the gnomes to give them a niche. But there still isn't one after 10 years.
Nuke the gnomes from orbit; it's the only way to be sure.

About three weeks later, I had some 100 typewritten pages, and we began serious play-testing in Lake Geneva, while copies were sent to the Twin Cities and to several other groups for comment. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS had been born."

I think the "niche" argument is a bit of a red herring. Humanoids are versitile enough that you can fill all niches simultaneously with one species (like in our real world). How, then, do we come to the conclusion that each species needs a separate niche predetermined for them.
Gnomes are one of the more distinctive races out there, and that's the key to having a niche in RPGs. In and of themselves, they have far more depth and richness of flavor than humans and half-elves put together. Play that distinctiveness, and you'll find they have a niche. |

| I've got five words for you.
I've. Got. A. Flying. Machine.
Gnomes all the way. Rock, forest, tinker, garden, lawn, underpants...their impact on the world around them is strong.
Down with all races with the word "half" in their name!

| Gnomes, all the way. They can be jolly little tinkerers, or evil plotters & tricksters, or bookworms, or negotiators, or sage wizards...
While halflings are just little thieves.

| The only good Gnome is a dead Gnome.
The are nothing more than a 1-HD encounter. Relegate them to plot device and window dressing. |

| Older versions = Hobbits (Halflings) > Gnomes Dungeons & Dragons v.3.5 = Gnomes are on par with Halflings because scrawny, shrunken, kenderlike gypsies are silly |

| Gnomes should be elemental earth creatures, not illusionsists with point-hats.
Halflings get my vote. |

| (Unbeknownst to the public, the Order of Ultimate Gnomish Illusionists has already started casting a massive race-wide spell to swap appearance with halflings, should those whiny "half-men" actually win this stupid poll. The gnomes will only reveal their treachery after the 4th edition genocide is complete.) |

| I gave this whole conversation serious thought.
do I prefer gnomes or halflings more?
I considered the role each held in my last to campaign worlds;
Green Isles - a single but divided race known as the stouts (con & save bonus ) and Hairfeet (dex & cantips) togeather they were the dominate race in that part of the world. 5 stout PCs, 1 hairfoot.
Canthia - Halflings are masters of psionics, nomadic gypsys or urban ghetto underclass.
- gnomes 1 small city on the plane of earth, first occurance in year 5 of campaign.
Hmm, still undecided about which I prefer.
Ill have to vote some other time.
