I'm not sure I agree with you. The online content for 4e is no where close to the quality Paizo put out in the paper version of the magazines, and this latest adventure (the Haunted Manor or whatever it is) was completely subpar. All of this, of course, IMO.

I will say this: I certainly would subscribe to a 4e magazine and I'd love for it to be the "old" paper kind of magazine.

If anyone would start publishing something like that, I bet it'd be a winner.

Who knows?

I agree with this. if WOTC can get the hang of this paradigm shift in editorial calendar, and can match Paizo's quality and develop imaginative adventures, it would be great.

I want more 4e stuff now. Anyone that can produce even average quality would get my dollars right now.

Personally, I see a dearth of 4e content. I want more and would pay if it was available.

You're half right, I think. Dungeon has certainly taken a severe nosedive, but I think Dragon has kept step remarkably well with the latter-day Paizo edition.

I too would prefer a hardcopy magazine style publication, and I'm still a little bitter (read: very!) at WotC for taking Paizo out of the equation. On the Dragon side, their post-re-relaunch editions have been very good. I agree Dungeon still needs some work, especially their support for their AP.

Still, free support is free support, albeit not exceptional. A competitor would have to be Paizo-quality or better to get people to pay while DDI is free, especially if it didn't have a known reputation. Once DDI is subscription-based the playing field gets more even. Now someone like WB has both quality and brand-name recognition.

Maybe someone from Paizo will leave to start up a 4e publication, just as someone left WotC to publish Dragon and Dungeon. Unlikely though, as Paizo is actively hiring and ramping up design and development for 3.P.

Time for EN World to launch its own quarterly 4e magazine!

And, I believe, at least one book from 3.5 supporter Tricky Owlbear.

As for KQ, I do hope it keeps its 3.5 focus and prospers as well as Paizo.

I am not sure if I said this here or on the KQ forums, but here goes. If KQ ever goes to complete support of 4e I will stop my subscription immediately. I do not like D&D 4e, I do not plan on playing it any more than I already have, and I don't plan on spending money supporting it in any way. I like that the magazine is 3.x compatible. If it has to switch away from that, then I would prefer it to be a systemless presentation. I strongly support Mr. Bauer's work, and I hope to show more support for 3.x in the future. 4e is not for me, which is why I like Kobold Quarterly.

Wolfgang does Patron projects rather than Ransom projects. I'm being pendantic pointing it out, but I didn't feel like I did a great job with the Patron project I was involved with partly because I didn't understand how participatory it was supposed to be.

There are things I like better about Ransom style projects, but the Patron system does seem like a lot more fun.

To be fair, it's mostly said by some of the more...extreme posters, and then only when a big time 3rd party guy decides not to go to 4e. It might be less actual concern over 3rd parties and more bitterness.

For that matter, I'm surprised I haven't seen that said in this thread yet.

I posted this question on the KQ forums as well. Wolfgang responded with:

That's only available to members and patrons, though. The supporting members all get a copy when it is done, but don't see the discussion before that.
Since I am just a supporting member on this particular project, I can't get to the different design notes and stuff. Bummer, but diapers are more important that getting in the minds of one of the great rpg designers. (wait... what am I THINKING?)

Ahh, so how do you know what type you are? I paid the $30, I assume that got me supporting member. Can I level up to member or patron?

EDIT: Okay, I am offically an idiot. All sorted.

How was it sorted out? Did you upgrade your supporting member to patron? I wouldn't mind doing it now that I have a bit more disposable cash.
