i wouldn't mind it being out here on the east coast. preferably in the nyc metro area though
The problem with NYC is the costs are too high. If you look at major medical conferences they are never in NYC. I always thought Chicago did a great job with the Comicon. Having never been to Gen Con I would guess they have a similar draw.

I sincerely hope that WotC is not getting back into the Con. Putting something that's so important under the indirect control of their parent company does not seem wise.
If I worked at Hasbro, the first question I'd ask WotC about Gen Con is why it's worthwhile to spend any money on a show that showcases our competition, for instance.
I have nothing but respect for Scott et al, but I know they don't get to call all the shots. If they did I am sure we'd have a GSL by now.
So color me interested in these developments, but hopeful it's not WotC.

I play 4E, and it's every bit as much Dungeons and Dragons as any other edition, including the one(s) you play. No more, and no less.
I hope not. Louisville has a couple of problems. Its downtown doesn't have a large enough convention center but has the hotel rooms. The big convention center is south of town but doesn't have eough hotel rooms close by (and none really close).
Aww c'mon, this is KY we're talking about. We could just fill the State Fairgrounds/Expo Center parking lot with mobile homes an rent 'em out!
Instead of the Embassy Suites, you could be staying in a "Double Wide" packed with gamers!
OK, maybe that wouldn't be as awesome as it sounded at first. But, I would get to commute to the Con and spend all my room money on games. Doesn't that make it sound like a great idea?

The biggest reason I don't see WotC buying it is because they used to own it and they sold it.

I severely hope, without any sort of real chance, that we get it here in New York City. Jesus we need a good convention. It's not like we don't have tons of great hotels, an incredible convention center (the Javitz), and are the capital of the world .
You had me up until this point. Come on now, it's a good little show.
But do you really want the RPGA to be the only d&d game in town.

Seriously though. NYC? Think about it.
NYC's about as expensive a town to have a convention as DC or LA. The taxes alone will kill the average gamer. I say vegas.
Seriously, somehwere in the midwest, equal to everyone. Indianapolis is perfect, kentucky would be ideal, anywhere else in any direction would screw attendance.

Yes. And I cannot possibly think of a way to make the con more expensive, expect maybe encrusting the badges with diamonds or something. No thanks.
+1
I hate how much it costs to go to Indiana. New York? NO WAY!!

Gotta keep it in the midwest somewhere to control the costs and make it available to the majority of people.
I mean, the whole reason Gencon is in this condition is because they moved the SW Celebration to LA from Indy, and that turned out to be a bust.
I fly to the convention. So the cost will be pretty much the same to me, travel wise, no matter where it is. Unless they move it close to AZ, which I don't see happening.
You gotta admit Las Vegas is a temptation.

This is a good point, even though it's not as obscenely expensive as some believe (cheap eating if you're up for it, cheap efficient transportation).
However, you also have to consider that when visiting a place like New York, it's not a one-stop trip. You can also visit the ten billion other things there are to do there. There are tons of cities like this.
I'm just hugely biased because we don't get any big conventions for any kind of subcultural anything coming our way (and if we do, they just arrived and aren't that great yet). They always end up in the Midwest, or in LA (which I don't understand how that's a more convenient place to be). The tri-state area is the worst for conventions. Even when I was a miniatures-wargamer for Games Workshop products, they make a tour with their Games Day convention that makes 3-4 stops each year, and I don't think they've ever come closer than perhaps Baltimore or Chicago.
Sorry, I'm just venting. It'll probably be another schlep across the country for next years Gen Con.

Yes, but as I understand it, the hotel costs and site fees more than make up for it.

That'd be a selling point if I expected to have significant amounts of time with nothing to do. If I was being sent to a trade or continuing education conference, for example, the tourist opportunities would be notable.
But, if I'm gong to Gen Con, shouldn't I expect to spend the vast majority of my time enjoying the con and its offerings?
