European players/DM's are not always easy to find

I've been rpg'ing over the net for bit now (using maptool and chat) and I live in the GMT (UTC) timezone.

I have found that games that are played at times suitable for GMT or GMT+1 (i.e. europe) are really quite hard to find.

There seems to be about 20 times more American online games going than European ones.

With this is mind I have set-up a website for people who want to play at times suitible to a European time zone.

It's called:- http://www.rpgeurope.net

The purpose of this is to get people who want to play at times suitible to a european time zone together. It's not limited to Europeans though, just people who want to play during times suitable to a European time zone.

Have other players/dm's also had troubles finding games that play during suitible hours?

I'm lucky enough to live in London, and by using some old gamer friends and by posting around a bit, I'm now up to 8 players in my fortnightly game!

Whereabouts in the UK are you, exactly? And are you aware of ukroleplayers.com, too?

Thandren's website is good - thanks to him I'm now running a weekly C&C 'Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh' online chat game in the Dragonsfoot chat forums.

I believe Thandren is in the Channel islands and does not have the opportunity for face to face gaming these days.

Edit: Oh BTW Matt/Tallarn, if you're ever at the London D&D Meetup you're welcome in my 3.5 D&D game (9 sessions - 8 dead PCs!).

I must admit that I managed to put together a weekly group more quickly than I expected. I expected it to take six months. It actually took slightly less than that. Still, we now have four players and me (DM), and everyone seems to get along and be enjoying themselves. I used a combination of word of mouth and posts on UKRoleplayers, and I live in the Midlands.

Thanks for the offer. At the moment, though, I've got about as much gaming as I can handle!

Glad to hear you're in no danger of letting the PC's rest of their laurels.

Hi Guys,

Yes i'm in Guernsey, channel islands, sort of part of the UK.

I wanted a site dedicated to online D&D and other and was for GMT or GMT + 1 (hence went for the idea of a European site for rpg over the net).

Luckily most european RPG players seem to have a very good grasp of english :-)

It's only been going since the 1/1/2009 but in those couple of weeks i'm upto 23 members. I want lots more though, my next aim is for 100 members, then 1000....

Anyone out there, if you want a site where people can get together to play rpg's D&D or other over the net during hours suitable to a European time zone then please register with http://www.rpgeurope.net

I'm looking forward to the DDI virtual game table. If it works as it should, it'll be the ideal place for a quick pick-up game.

That said, it's difficult to find gamers because:
a) There are not so many of us. At least, not so many as there are willing to take part in other.. ahem... online group activities.
b) We tend to segregate. If, instead of "UKgames.com", "Juegosderolonline.es" or "Giochionline.it", we used a single place to meet, the possibilities of there being enough of us to play a game at any time would increase.
c) In Europe, we speak more than one language, so it's more difficult for two Europeans to game together than for two USAmericans. Heck, just in Spain, we have between 4 and 10 languages (depending on who you're listening to and what does that person understand as a "language" ).

Yes European online RPG players are dispersed over lots of sites, I'm hoping one day http://www.rpgeurope.net will help bring them together a bit.

Yes, the language issue will always be some barrier. Obviously UK players speak English and from my experience it is very common for other European RPG players to speak English as a 2nd language really well, and very many are happy to take part in playing over the net in English.

In Glasgow we don't have as much of a problem, but then, pasty nerds like us probably wouldn't survive long where you live. :-)

Re: the OP - I haven't played any RPGs online for years (used to MUSH quite a bit, though) but I think this is a really cool idea. I appreciate why it's the case, but any chat-based games over the internet run at times to suit Yanks become basically impossible for us - either they play in the afternoon or you stay up till the wee hours. A website specifically for people who play to a GMT schedule would certainly be my first port of call if I ever go looking for such a game

Well I'm just outside Glasgow (near Motherwell), and I consider it "Bandit Country"
hell I'd swap Neds for mutant 4 armed baboons and nilbogs any day of the week!

There's lots of opportunity for face to face games where I live, however my wife works evenings and I find myself in having to baby sit. And so great chance for rpg over the net play....

Quick suggestion - make a News Post on ENWorld and other gaming websites about your website, throw it into your signature. Why not pop over to our website at Dreamscarred Press - The Definitive Source for d20 Psionics › All Types › All Topics and post a suggestion. We got a PbP game going in the forums there, perhaps someone is interested in joining more?

What, are you implying that there is actually a more civilized part of Scotland?

You can laugh, but Glasgow is the third largest city in the UK.. We're civilized... just in the same way that, say, Rome was civilized, and they still found time for gladiator fights. :-)

Hey, I have joined an online gamer's site but never joined a game.

The principal reason behind this is I don't know how to use the map tool and I haven't found a clear easy to follow guidline or instructions.

Any suggestions?

jbear, yes it can take a bit of getting used to, but there are many experts on forums for these products to help you, people better than me to explain. Also one game I play in uses just a chat room on dragons foot site to run the game so there is no tech knowlege to worry about.

If you use a text chat room to run a game then a system like AD&D or C&C or similar may be best as there is less need for maps in those systems. Personally I think it's quite refreshing to use just a text chat room to run the game as everyone uses there imaginations more and it feels like the good old days of AD&D before grids and miniatures.

At the moment I play in a game that uses Maptool and a game that uses just a text chat window and I like them both.

MadMaxim, thanks for the support :-)
