Wil Wheaton is awesome. He'd fit in with my group seamlessly. I wonder if this is meant to resemble a published module, or if this is just Chris Perkins winging-it. Either way, very cool!

Wow. Thanks for gettin' back to me one that one, Mr. Rouse! A job well done, and quite a bit more engaging than Keep on the Shadowfell was last time around.
I really hope those new players out there, who might be intimidated by the game without having played it yet, listen to podcasts like these and realise exactly just how much of a laugh D&D normally is.
Also, Perkins. Most patient DM ever. /salute

Penny Arcade just updated their site with a long post discussing their introduction to DND (Penny Arcade! - Please Check One). Here's a chunk:

The more I talk to Tycho about what previous editions of the game were like, the more I'm glad I came in when I did. It sounds like a lot of the stuff that might have turned me off from the game was stripped out for 4th edition. Obviously I'm not an expert but my impression after talking with Tycho is that they've made a significantly more accessible game. I think it was the new 4th edition rules combined with where I was in my tabletop journey that made D&D really appeal to me. The tabletop journey I mentioned is actually sort of interesting. I've been thinking about why I was sort of primed for D&D and if you trace it back through the news posts you can see that it starts with Pokemon of all things.
I think it's pretty insightful on a new player's approach to 4E, coming from mostly a video game / CCG background.
And here's the link to the full page, which includes the description, an intro to Acquisitions, Incorporated and its newest employee, and the custom art that accompanies this particular podcost: D&D Podcast: Penny Arcade/PvP #1 (February 2009).
Just wanted to post the full link because the custom art is a big part of the 'cast.
--Know the difference:-- Lose is a verb. Rhymes with booze and news. Means "to be unsuccessful in retaining possession of." You lose your turn when stunned. After you take an extended rest, you lose any unspent action points.
Loose is usually an adjective. Rhymes with deuce and caboose. Means "not fastened"--"Loose" is the opposite of "tight." You can use "loose" as a verb, but in that case it means "to set loose; release." You loosen a lightbulb. You loose an arrow at a target.
And I just gotta say, brilliant marketing. I have not listened to it yet, but the PVP podcasts have gone a long way in my book. Especially since it isn't just that but also an entertaining and fun set of casts.
Thank you!
Edit: I've listened to the others, and I'll listen to this one on my way to run a game for folks in the next town over this sat, just wish the second one was up for the games on sunday.

I love these casts, personally I'd like to see them continue them all the way up to level 30!
Seconded. I love these podcasts. They are getting funnier and more entertaining with each post. Now that they have a complete party (Defender, Leader, Controller and now Striker) they can maybe take on some real challenges without needing a goblin to save them. I can hardly wait to see the Avenger in action.
Man I really felt for Wheaton when the name he spent so much time on became reduced to Al. Ha! I can't tell you how many time stuff like that has happened to me. Great post.

Thirded! (?)
That would be fantastic to get actual play recordings to 30th level by this group.
I use to ignore actual play podcasts, despite being a podcast fan, but these really opened my eyes and since then I've started listening to a few others.
I think it would make for a fantastic ongoing podcast.
There is no way I'd be able to stand that much out of character jabber and jackassing in my game. While my group loves a good laugh, that's far, far too much. Or maybe they're hamming it up. But to each their own I suppose!
edit - I am surprised he preempted them to make Stealth checks. I would have simply assumed a passive value, since no players seemed to indicate they wanted to keep quiet.

I'll tolerate a lot of hamming at the game. In part it's why I game. Also I have often used something like a 'Stealth checks please' as a not so subtle way to bring things back to the game. It works wonders.
I only hope that future podcast-projects will be with video. It would be MUCH easier to understand who is talking at the moment and to see the gestures which are always important for communication.
There are several moments where I think you can hear Chris' patience being stretched to the limit, where he will raise the level of his voice *just above* that of the players (i.e. loud) in order to stop them goofing off and keeping the game on track. Classic DM volume escalation strategy.
Really interesting, can't wait for the rest, and like the poster above, it would be great if there was video for future installments.

The podcast reminds me a lot of my games.
Did you notice how the OOC horseplay died down as the game progressed? And there was more and more character stuff, even if it was a little pythonesic..
With some newbies in a game it takes some time for them to learn how to play in DND....
