Ampersand: Debut and Exclusive Content (Assassin Class)
Lots of stuff this time around. One of the largest being a exclusive class to DDI: The Assassin (including a new Power Source it is associated with) in September!
Woot, the assassin class, sounds cool (I'm guessing its shadow power source), as does the revenant and the psion (July's PHB3 early release/preview).

I'm pretty sure that when they say "ddi exclusive" they really mean "ddi exclusive preview until we publish it for real." I wish they'd be more clear on that.

I think this clears it up:

This month, we kick off a new rollout of exclusive material for the Dungeons & Dragons game that you can only get as a D&D Insider subscriber. This exclusive material won't appear in any core rulebooks or supplements, but it will be totally official and ready to use if you're a D&D Insider subscriber.
So it seems like both the Revenant and Assassin (and future exclusive material) will be only available through DDI. Which makes me happy.

I dunno...do we really think the Assassin is going to be the only shadow class coming out? I know there have been theories that the cover of the PHB3 was photoshopped "Psionics" over "Arcane" from PHB2...
I am going to pre-order that thing as soon as it hits Amazon.
I don't think this means that PHB3 will feature the Psionic and Shadow power source.

Cool my half-orc fighter assassin (nostalgia PC, not for gaming) maybe be workable now: current build hybrid battlerager fighter/rogue with khopesh and spiked shield as his light blade for sneak attack
EDIT: don't mention the hybrid rules in the CB update tomorrow though, unlike the monk... I hope it is still in,

This is a boon to the ink cartridge business. If one person comes to the table with an assassin, no GM is going to insist that everyone who wants to play one subscribe to DDI.
DDI exclusive content leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I guess it's not significantly different from stuff you could only find in Dragon magazine. That didn't always make me happy, either.
It's no different from the PHb1 classes being exclusive to PHb1, or the PHb2 classes being exclusive to PHb2.
The big question is how much future support will the Revenant and Assassin get? The Gnoll (the only current Dragon race likely to remain in Dragon, and even then some speculate it'll be the final PHb3 race) has gotten no support outside of the original Playing article. Neither have the other Dragon races, but then 2 are definitely coming out in PHb/PGs, and one (Shadar-kai) most likely will, so they'll get support after that.
Will the Revenant & Assassin get support in books, just in Dragon, or nothing at all once the articles are out - that's the big question. Hopefully they'll at least get support in future Dragon issues when stuff like Power book X or PHb X comes out.

I don't think they are likely to get all that much "support", but how much support do they really need? We might get a follow up article or two over the years, but I'd be fine with just the original articles (assuming they're fairly meaty to start with).

Ah, well.
Why? Why does a new race or class belong in a hardcover rulebook? If you aren't a D&DI subscriber, but want the assassin or revenant, then just up for one month and get that issue.
I can understand wanting to have all the cool new crunchy stuff . . . but that's why I've always subscribed to Dragon both in print and online.

Brings back memories of my 27th level 1st edition assassin (I know, I know, they topped out about 10 levels before that, what can I say?)... ahh the misspent days of my Monty Haul youth...

If they don't get the same amount of support the book races & classes get, as far as new feats/powers go, eventually they'll fall behind to the point where they're completely underpowered. The Tiefling Fighter support from MP is a good example of what I mean - without the support of MP, Tiefling Fighters would still be underpowered compared to, say, an Elven Fighter.
