I may be taking some DnD virgins into the game. How well set up is the MMO to handle a complete unfamiliarity with not only the rules system, but also the ethos of DnD itself?
Pretty well, I'd say. If you can build yourself a well-rounded adventuring party, they ought to rock out nicely. Things you really need:
1) Rogue with lots and lots of search, disable device, and open locks.
2) Healer.
3) The rest is kinda gravy, but a buffing mage is really nice.
As usual in 3.5, multiclassing is death for the above three cases (the rogue for skill purposes). Unless you're playing someone that beats things on the head with hard instruments, in which case it's unbelievably overpowered as usual.

Running a WF Lord of Blades FavSoul right now and it's loads of fun. Sound Burst is not so fun when everyone just wants to run the undead quests though!
so i signed up on the website. do i have to wait for an invite via email (like with some other betas i've been in) or is there some place on the ddo site that i go and download the client? etc

They'll send you an email; it took a dayish for mine to come. You should read all of the email from top to bottom. There's some important information that you might miss if you don't. (There were some beta players that got hosed for lack of reading skills.)

Pshaw.
You don't need to be a single-classed rogue for trapfinding-- any decent multiclass build can keep Spot, Search, Disable, and Open Locks maxxed. There are lots of Rog1/Wiz X trapmonkeys. Plenty of ways to scrounge up 4 skill points per level.
But you definitely need to keep those skills maxxed out at all times. Nobody likes a rogue who can't spot the traps. (You can probably even drop Open Locks off the list-- though the best rogue with Open Locks will be better than any wizard with knock.)
Single-classed rogues aren't along for the trapfinding-- those you bring along for the DPS!
Fair enough! I did see some rogue dip builds that were reasonably competent at traps. However, I definitely had the impression that the straight builds were better, I think because they had more invested in the active and passive skill boost enhancements.

I don't know if the Atari/Turbine lawsuit was holding things up or not, and I don't care.
DDO Unlimited is currently live (albeit in "Headstart" mode for us VIPs) for a bit.
One unexpected surprise is that they have started a new server CANNITH that is completely new, no character transfers allowed.
So everyone starting on that server will start on the same footing (loot-wise at least).
I am definitely planning on making a new character on that server and experiencing the game again from the beginning.
Is there any interest in starting an ENworld guild on Cannith?
I would love to do something like that, but if I am not mistaken, it hasn't become free for me. ANd I probably wouldn't find the time. Or too much time. Hmm.

I'm enjoying the new module. You still can't subscribe by paying through Paypal, so I just shelled out for a pack of Turbine points and bought myself some content.
If you are thinking of buying content, my top recommendations are: Shavarath, Vale of Twilight, and Gianthold. There's a ton of low-level content that's free, but level 10+ stuff is hard to come by.
Btw, Wulf, I like the idea of an ENWorld guild on Cannith.

I find the Broccoli vs. Beholder ads to be amusing.

I'm playing the "unlimited free" version right now and having lots of fun. I've got four character slots per server as I used to be a paid subscriber back in the day.
But, I do have to say, this game is not really "unlimited free". It's only limited free. The advertising is more than a bit misleading, IMO. Without a paid subscription, your characters are limited to 4th level. So, your "free" is unlimited until you level up 2 to 4 characters per server to 4th level. Then you'll have to purchase some Turbine points to continue with your "free". Which, is not actually free anymore.
Now, the actual model I'm okay with and I have no problem ponying up some real money to get some points to buy my way past 4th level and get some other goodies from the DDO store. It's still a pretty cheap way to play a fun MMO.
But the free is quite limited. Don't believe the misleading advertising.
