That's going to be funny given 4e's reputation for uber balance.
Thus why I almost can't wait to see the new complaints about it ;p

"Man, those psionic classes are WAY more balanced than any other class! That whole power-source is completely frickin' un-broken and useable. Lame move, WotC!"
Maybe something like that.
I never really cared about Psionics ever...nothing wrong with 'em, just not my thing. But just like every class in 4E, I look forward to ripping off the attached fluff and throwing my own on.
In a way I am not happy about doing the playtest version of the Psion. While I am interested in what they do, the playest will be an incomplete class, with limited powers and builds (just like the Monk, I assume) I would prefer to see the whole class in situ, as he saying goes, rather than broken out of the whole book and showed halfway done.

But its not a playtest, its supposedly the whole class that is being released.

Its not a playtest, but I think it will only be one build.

Fair enough mate. Is this a gut feeling or did I miss some announcement/comment?
I'm extrapolating from comments made in this month's Ampersand. Bill Slavicsek said that they would be releasing one build for five of the PHB3 classes. I could be wrong.

Not what I heard. It is a limited build, and while they might not call it a playtest, I woud be very surprised if there were not changes before PHBIII, so I would call it a playtest.

I have been saying it was one build...but I can find nowhere it says that...so I guess gut.

Thanks, it would definitely seem that you are indeed correct.

I'm sure there will be a few tweaks here or there, but I'm not sure we'll see changes on the scale of the artificer (or probably even the monk). I have a feeling that the psion has been "done" for a while; IMO, its the obvious place to start when you begin designing psionic classes.

I always got the impression they designed the psion at the same time as the wizard or at least spent some thought on it then.
There was someone from wizards that commented that they hadn't published psionics till now simply becuase they felt the martial, arcane, divine, and primal power sources were more important. So that says to me that they've been working on it if not since the very begining at least for a long time, they've just been sitting on it.
Afraid not. .pdf and softcover only. You really are missing out though, man :
Isn't a softcover book a hard copy as opposed to an electronic PDF?

You'd be surprised how picky people can be regarding literal definitions of things
That said, if softcover works for you, then they've got those on Amazon

Well, to get the converstaion back on track, as the last three posters missed....
Well, if the psion is a striker, as some people suggest, what does everyone think will be their extra damage trick?
So far we have:
Rogue: Extra damage with combat advantage 1/round
Ranger: Quarry extra damage 1/round
Barbarian: Extra damage built into their powers.
Avenger: No extra damage but rolling twice in most cases.
Sorceror: Extrra damage on all arcane powers, can be applies many many times in the right situtation
Monk: I never saw that, maybe someone can fill it in.
So what will be the Psion's mechanic? Any ideas?
I personally think it will be something like the 3.5 gaining focus. Maybe a move action that can be lowered to a minor with a feat that requites some kind of concentration check. When successful, it allows the psion to add an effect, not extra daamge, to a psionic ability/power/spell (manifestation?)
Maybe weakened to start and stronger abilities in certain situations or at higherlevels or PPs?
