Do fighters have to safeguard their magic weapons that carefully in your campaign too?

Different camapign expectations.

Errrr..... [looking around]

I suppose I am guilty of "forgetting" about the player's spellbooks when they're adventuring. Typically, they'd be quite unwieldy, especially if there are a few of them. Where would a typical wizard keep them in their robes (at lower levels, when bags of holding aren't as prevalent?

Most of the time, I just let the players handwave it unless it's a plot point.

That's what blessed books, bags of holding and/or Handy Haversacks are for. Maybe I'm just different. My wizards always keeps their spell book(s) on their person in one way or another. I thought that was "normal."

Check out the top two panels:

Giant In the Playground Games

The spellbooks are clearly on the ground on the island. Even if Vaarsuvius's robes can store an infinite number of spellbooks without encumbrance via the DM's handwave, he still would have had to recover them between receiving the soul splice and leaving to rescue her family.

Giant In the Playground Games

As you can see, that didn't happen. I suppose one Teleport spell would suffice to recover them, since Vaarsuvius is familiar with the island and can prepare Teleport himself once arriving there and retrieving her books. But we'll have to see: I don't think there are any 9th+ level wizards in Hinjo's fleet, and it's hard to imagine someone having saved something as valuable as a scroll of Teleport all this time.

V cannot teleport. She picked conjuration as a barred school during 3e, not knowing 3.5 would change the laws of the universe.

Maybe Durkon can windwalk them again.

But I suspect this may be handwaved...

There's time for V to have retrieved the books between AFTER killing the dragon, and before he/she joins up with the fleet again.
