I'm curious how these work. How well they stand up, how detachable they are to one another. Can you use one door, or do you need double? How well do they stand up? Etc etc.
THat's where I first read about them. It didn't answer my questions.
Hi! I have to admit, I was more interested in the status flags when I was checking out the Dark-Platypus booth at Origins, but I played a bit with the bendy dungeon walls too.
What did you want to know? I can try to answer questions to the best of my memory!
How sturdy are they? Do you need the magnetic mat for them to work well?
Even if they work without the magnetic mat, are they better on it?
Y'know, you don't need a summoning spell. You can get me 24/7 on my blog and 15/7 on Twitter (@geeksdreamgirl). ;-)
They are thinner than the other 3-D dungeon walls I've seen, but look fairly sturdy. We were discussing them on Twitter and someone mentioned that the hinges on his broke. (The company gladly provided him a refund.) I'm not sure how much use and abuse they got before that happened.
You don't need a magnetic map for them to work. (Their site says you can actually put a thin sheet of metal under a regular battlemap for the same effect - Home Depot trip, anyone?)
They sell clip on magnets for the walls that make them stick REALLY well to the magnetic battlemap. If you have players who are rough with the minis or a cat that likes to walk across the game table, these would be a wise addition.
(Full disclosure: I don't work for Dark-Platypus, nor did they give me any free stuff. I just like neat things, and talking about neat things. Especially neat things I'd buy if I had more disposable income.) ;-)
I have these. I liked them at first, but found them a bit fiddly. They stand up well, unless something pushes them over. Then the whole wall goes over. I bought mine right when they first came out, so hopefully they've figured out a solution to my biggest issue with them, which is that the plastic connectors between the wall sections are really fragile.

I used these for the Dungeon Crawl Classics tourney in 2007. They stand up pretty well when you have a couple linked together. (Each wall piece is an individual one-inch. The link pins are fairly sturdy, but I have had a couple snap off in the two years since I got them). The doors are separate and stand up fine also. They now have a magnetic adapter set for them that you can use with their magnetic receptive battle mat, and those stand up to major table-shaking punishment.
I have some without the magnets. They stand up find. You don't need double doors, single doors work just find.
I wuill say that after seeing the magnets and all of their offereings at Origins it is impressive. The normal walls can be acciedently knocked over or moved if someone bumps the table. The magnets hold them fast.
I have not had any of my own walls break. Hopefully I won't.
They have a nice board they sell that is magnatized. I imagine it would be useful if one were also using the whoever does those magnetic condition chips.
I have them but little opportunity to use them, alas...sigh
Again, I got them when they were just released, and the hinges do seem fragile, but they should mostly last for many gaming sessions as they aren't that weak.
Putting magnetics on base would be ideal, I bought Dark Platypus' magnetic mat.
The magnetic mat is heavy, comapred to say a chessex mat, and can't roll up as tightly due to stiff material and I presume, the stuf used ot make it magnetic. So while it's sitll vertianly portable it' snot "heavy heavy" (think it weights 2lbs?) I'd preffer it for a "permanently laid out mat on a game table in the garage" sort of idea.
On the plus side magnetics are SO much better for using WOTC plastic minis, which are so light wieght they always get knocked all over.
So I have been gluing tiny magnets onto the bases of all my Medium/small WOTC minis
