[OT - Boxing]Ricardo Mayorga

My God.

How good is this guy? [/rhetorical question]

He just took one of the best boxers in the world apart in 3 rounds. I mean, Vernon Forrest is a great fighter - Shane Mosely couldn't get near him in 2 fights, and Mayorga just destroyed him. Amazing.

I lost AU$10 on this guy (which is about US$1.17 or thereabouts) and am firmly convinced we'll be watching him bash all and sundry for the next 5-6 years.

Pity he's a Don King hand-puppet, but anyway...

Well done.

And he smokes. Since he's my new role model, I'm back on the fags... err, cigarettes...

How good is this guy? Hard to say. He takes a good punch and obviously he can throw haymakers with the best of them.

At the same time, Forrest was badly overconfident and fought Mayorga's fight. I wouldn't be surprised to see Forrest come back and win the rematch by remembering he has boxing skills.

What he said.

It'll take a history of success instead of just some lucky (although admittingly taking advantage of Forrest) shots to be be the next great boxer.

I really hope there's a rematch.

Great fight.

Well duh! That's why my comment was a bona fide prediction, and not a statement of the obvious. Though he does have a nice record, albeit against a series of bums. Still, it takes far more than luck to beat a boxer like Vernon Forrest.

There will be, and it'll be a closer bout than this one (Forrest did look a bit overconfident and underdone), but I'm still tipping Mayorga to k.o. Forrest in the rematch.

In 6 rounds.

Great fight.
One of the undercards was sweet, too. How good was the Casamayor-Campbell fight? Lost money on him too.

That'll teach me to back American non-heavyweights...

Oh yeah, and if you're a pro boxer and you're reading this - don't sign anything with HBO.

It's the kiss of death...

I don't totally agree here. I've seen a number of fights involving good fighters were luck played a factor. It's not a question of Mayorga being a good fighter. He's very tough and hits like a hammer.

But Forrest fought a bad fight that maximized Mayorga's chance of landing a big punch. From the sound of it there will definitely be a rematch and then we'll get a chance to see if Mayorga can do the same when Forrest is actually using his boxing skills. If he can, he will have proved alot.

They certainly have had their problems. No one predicted this particular upset.

Can't beat the kind of exposure that ensures... :)

While I admit Forrest is a far better boxer (with HUGE natural ability to boot), don't discount the raw talent of Mayorga.

He doesn't just punch hard - did you see his feet move?

If he learns to box (and he will), he will be one of the best.

slightly off topic, but i like boxing, enjoy watching it... how do i find out more about it? in Australia, do i have to get foxtel or whatever? back in NZ we used to get a lot of biggish fights on free tv, but over here no such luck.

Snoweel 27th January 2003 06:47 AM

You can pay through the nose to watch it at home (via Main Event) or you can do like the rest of us and drag yourself out of bed on a sunday morning and get back on the piss down the pub.

RSL's are great (if you can put up with the lack of atmosphere) - they usually have even the least interesting fights (non-big name fighters, etc), and at $2.50 a schooner/$3.20 spirits, by 4 o'clock you won't be able to scratch yourself.
