Adventure Idea

Medieval plague place reopened after 400 years

I don't play d20 Modern but I can think of several possible adventures based on this story. Who knows what's been growing down there for the last 400 years.

"The horrors of the plague and talk that the close was haunted made it a no-go area for many of the city's residents.

Around 100 years after the plague struck, the Royal Exchange, now the city chambers, was built over the area, leaving a network of medieval streets and narrow walkways untouched."

oooooh, creepy goodness

thanks Airwolf!

As if Al Qaeda brewing Ricin in a London flat wasn't enough, now the Scottish Tourist board wants to release the Black Death.

I knew those Scots where considering independence but this is going to far, I just hope GWB and Tony can redirect the taskforce in time.

Yeah, great, a d20 Modern dungeon-crawl. Just what I needed.

Only a dungeon crawl if you want it to be. The idea seed is that something locked up for 400 years is opened up. Plenty of stuff could get out and cause havok without the pc's needing to go spelunking for evil. The Exorcist had the same premise, and I don't recall too much dungeon crawling in that.

And if, say, an evolved form of the bubonic plague got out and stated doing weird and unspeakable things to unsuspecting innocents, what good would dungeon crawling do to stop it anyway?

Just think about the scenario a bit more creatively. As Dm YOU control exactly how much dungeon crawl is in the mix.

How about none. I already ran one for my group and they hated it. If anything what the would do now is send remotes down with explosives and just cave in the place.

Well thats my point. It's an adventure seed, not a fully fleshed out Dungeon Magazine scenario. Joshua grumbled about the post, implying that it was only a dungeon crawl. I maintain it's just a cool event that will become what the DM wants it to be. The die, in this case, is not yet cast.

You are welcome, glad to help.

I have been thinking about this story and it could work just as well in a fantasy campaign.
I am working on an urban campaign for my group and this would be a great idea for them to explore an old section of the city that housed people during an outbreak of some illness.
The city fathers decided that no cure was available, if anyone got the disease they were tossed in this section to die. The area was buried and built upon.

Yep, the gears in my mind are really starting to spin now. I hope I don't loose too much smoke.

IDEAS THAT AREN'T JUST DUNGEON CRAWLs:

-- CAT AND MOUSE --
"Sydney, we believe that a rogue terrorist cell has come into information on the existence of a Rambaldi artifact hidden somewhere in the city. Your mission is to get into the area, dodge the terrorist cells, and get the Rambaldi artifact. If you're seen, the terrorist cell will activate their backup plan, which is to destroy the complex, so it is IMPERATIVE that you not be detected."

-- OUTBREAK, WITH ZOMBIES --
A special CDC team is deployed to the area to ensure that all traces of the plague are gone. This was made over the arguments of other departments, who would rather just blow the place up and cave it in. To make things even worse, this "plague" actually results in the dead rising, and the CDC team finds itself desperately trying to escape hordes of shuffling zombies while negotiators on the surface try to stop the army from caving in the whole place in the interests of national safety.

-- TECHNOBRIGADOON --
The heroes have odd dreams that compel them to go into the closed-off section. There, they discover that the area is older than it first appeared. In actuality, the area that was sealed off hundreds of years ago was an area that had only recently been unsealed after being sealed off previously as "haunted". A sort of technological Brigadoon, the area is cursed to be accessible to mortals for only a few months before being sealed up for centuries. The party must solve the mystery of what agent placed the curse and why, possibly rescuing an ancient immortal creature who has lain in the center of the old section, trapped, for millenia.

-- BABYLON SQUARED, SORTA --
"We thought they sealed it off for being a plague area, but these people didn't die from any plague. They died of old age! And those strange people in the old clothing speaking a language we couldn't understand -- those are the original inhabitants! This is some sort of time-warped nexus!"

-- YOUR BASIC AGENTS OF PSI ADVENTURE IN A NEW AREA --
"The old 'Ring around the Rosy' story, dancing to keep the plague away? A fanciful tale. In actuality, a cult of Illithids were attempting to summon some sort of dark and malevolant force into this world, using their power to make the poor victims dance in a summoning pattern -- like alien crop circles or the old faerie rings. They were stopped by early agents, but not without horrible cost. The Illithids used a powerful psionic artifact to steal the vital essence of life forms and force these dances -- that artifact caused the Black Plague. And that artifact is somewhere in this sealed-off area. And we know that the Illithids are gonna be looking for it."

I dunno. I could do more and better if I weren't just making all that up, but come on -- it's a neat idea. You can do more than JUST a dungeon crawl with it.

I sincerely hope you're joking. If you're not, don't get your hopes up; Scotland doesn't have any oil, so GWB isn't the least bit interested.
