Venza, in addition to the City of Glass, has been talked about as a City of Gates--basically a quick and easy ploy to get PCs to other parts of the world. Had we ever decided how these gates work? What the gates are?
There were a lot of ideas but we never reached consensus. If you have an idea go ahead and put it out there. I'd like to see this discussion reopened and maybe, just maybe we can decide what we're doing with it.
Wasn't it every major city would have a gate that led to Venza, but Venza had a gate to every city. So to get from point A to Point C you had to go to B (Venza) first. Also didn't they have something to do with the big magical catastrophe that led to "change storms" and the seperation of all the citites/countries? -HM
How about the City of the Central Gate? The gates in the other cities only having one destination, Venza, but the one in Venza has a dial (ok, maybe sounds to much Stargate...)
I'm imagining that the Gates were placed around E'n by An Ancient CultureTM and that there are a bunch of them. Perhaps placed by the halflings, perhaps something else, and that's decidedly ambiguous right now. Gates come in different sizes and shapes. Some are small and can only be crawled through, others are large enough to send whole caravans through (like the Athrak Gate of House Boraga). They are typically made of glass, wrought into bizarre patterns. Using a Gate can employ all sorts of different methods. Some are freely open, some require a talisman to activate, others may require sacrifice or a secret word or something else. Basically, whatever makes the story more interesting. Gates use a Transitional Plane. Perhaps it's the Border Realms, perhaps the Plane of Shadow, not sure yet.
