• Prataferro: Of Silver and Iron

"The Church owns my soul, the Guild owns my wares, the Sages own my blood, and the Lords own my lands. I only have my hands, and my wits, and my blade to pay my debts."

    - Adventurer's Creed.

The Old World is a place where men and women hope not to break free, but the die Even. On the eve of an Age there are a thousand whispered hopes of a land across the Sea, something New, something Grand, and up rise the Adventurers. Kings wage war on thrones atop a society where every man is bought and sold from cradle to grave. You carry your pike, your wand, your holy relics into the Unknown hoping to come out as a Freeman, and make your way through society.

    Synopsis:

Prataferro is a High Fantasy setting where every man, woman, and child is born a slave. Debts are accrued by every living creature (Flesh Price) until their twentieth birthday, upon which the Interest begins to grow...

    History:

In the Forgotten Age it is said a man earned his keep from the sweat of his brow and his hands, and owed no Flesh Price, and lords protected their people as they made love, raised children, waged war. They died to the claws of the Darkness, the creatures who roamed the places between their small homesteads. Claw and flame and maw destroyed flesh; children were given to the Dark creatures to protect the land, and they grew fat on their bizarre powers.

Then the Collectors came. It is said they rose from the seas; still others claim they are inscrutable creatures of the Stars, of the secret places between the worlds. Ugly creatures, with flesh that was immune to club or arrow, whose eyes were faceted gems, whose lips bore the poison of opportunity.

The Choice was given to the Great King, whose true name has been lost to legend. The Collectors offered a choice: The power to reshape the land, to raise the dead, to call servitors from soil and sky. They offered the power of the Arts . . . For a price.

From this day forth each man shall owe a debt, a debt that he must repay. If one should die they shall toil beneath you, Great King, and your children, and theirs... All shall pay their Price in this Collection, or plunge your world into the Darkness.

The Great King made the Choice, to save his people, to protect them from the Darkness.

And so began the Grand Collection.

Mankind learned the power of iron, of steel and lead and gold. Men awoke from sleep on that day with the power to bend others to their will, to fly like birds, to burn the fields with flame and lightning. It has been so long... So long that no man alive knows of the Price bartered. The world that is known has paid the Price for hundreds of generations, and all toil beneath it. Those who attempt to escape through the embrace of death are bound to their Debtors, raised to do battle in the wars of the Kings and Powers of the land.

Those lucky enough to be Freed can build great fortunes, and lose them in an instant. Men can pay the Churches to bring them back from the dead... As soon as their accounts gain the interest needed. Those who Adventure have decided to forget the toils of the field and gain favor in a society built around the ancient bargain.

    Flesh Price/Debt:

Each Player Character is created at 1st level with no coinage. In fact, the character has already gained a Flesh Price. These Prices vary depending on your Caste, and the Training you gained before your 20th year. You may also purchase equipment, learn spells (see Spellcasting Debt), and other requirements upon Character Creation.

Debt has an annual interest rate of 10%, compounded once per 'living season' (spring, summer, fall). The Debt is to be repaid to the Character's Debtor, the individual who has purchased their Debt from their family/lord/Church, and a minimum rate per season is established. If at any time the minimum rate is not met the Character suffers penalties related to their Debtor.

Once the domain of the Elchaeonic Empire, little is remembered of them, or that era, save by a few sages; only that the island Empire rose and fell on the discovery of magic. Left in its wake, centuries later, are isolated tribes marked by the wizards who once ruled them, crumbled fortresses and forgotten island towers, and -- in theory, at least -- artifacts of unknowable power lying in their ruin all this time, waiting to see the light of day once more....

  • The Untamed Wilds

Shakespeare said, "All the world is a stage, the men and women merely players."

    Homebrew Setting:
This is a magic infusion, early technology, fantasy world. The particular technological age is deliberately set at the late Iron Age moving into the Golden Age of Discovery so that the non-combat related actions of the characters have a direct effect on political, social, and technological development.

    - Races / Character Description -
All characters should be humanoid, meaning 2 arms and 2 legs. No tails, wings, feathers, or scales at inception, of a relative height from 4' to 8', with general earth tone coloration or chromatic hue from black to white. Star Wars has its own diversity. This world is still simpler.

    - Classes / Levels -
In a beginning adventure to a beginning campaign. The term beginner is important. Classes are only relevant to the players own vocabulary and archetypal design not to the playable mechanics of this system. Diversity is pliable to all, free of penalty. Beginning age of characters should be late adolescent to early adult for relative plausibility.

    - Equipment / Money -
As per the introduction, the technological age is late iron. This is important to starting gear. Suits of armor have never even been heard of, much less seen. Metal weaponry does, of course, exist but it is general and simple. Rapiers and katanas and such are yet to be designed, waiting on character input and alloy component discovery. Some indigenous peoples are still using weaponry made of stone or bone.

All characters may begin with a simple melee weapon no larger than a longsword or single-blade fighting axe and/or a simple bow (long or short) with 20 arrows. If choosing knives, small swords, or hand axes, a character may begin with 2. Clothing should be homespun, wool, or cotton, no armor yet. Shields or bucklers are small and will be made of wood or hide.

The base currency is a medium sized coin made of tin that has various names from the 4 cities where it is minted but the same value. All characters are considered to have acquired 20 coins at the start of play. This is more than adequate. You will see.

    System:
This may come across as strange, but the system of origin for your character is irrelevant. I can use whatever stats you already have to relate them to what is important to keep track of development through play. Everyone has a favorite archetype or character. The question is can you take it and develop it through your own ability to play it, outside the rigid parameters of a gaming system? Where would you take it if the next step were entirely up to you?

Technical Mechanics are based on percentile and advancement is a point-buy system.

The world is called The Untamed Wilds

  • Arcanum of the Stars

Arcanum of the Stars is both the name of my Dragonstar campaign and one of the main forces behind that campaign. However, Arcanum of the Stars (AotS), the campaign, isn't going to be just about that one power group. Many other resources whether D&D, D20, or something else entirely has influenced how Arcanum of the Stars has developed and will continue to be developed. And not only is Arcanum of the Stars a campaign, it is also designed to be a Dragonstar resource for other players and GMs to add new material to their own Dragonstar campaigns.

  • The Volunteer Zombie Eradication Force

Towering directly over your head is an ragged and imposing drill sergeant in his fifties. His tidily worn fatigues mock his appearance and presence: his leathery, scarred face wrinkles a hundred times over and he spits as he talks. Looking directly into your eye, into your soul, he yells,
"This is where all V.Z.E.F. recruits come to learn how to survive the madness of the apocalyptic world.
Report here to gear up and to find out how, when and where you will be stationed!
Check back to take on new missions (if available) and to meet other recruits.
If this is where it all ends, then this is where it all begins. Soooooound GOOD?!"

    Ok, but seriously...

This is just a place to get started before you even know what's going on.
Some won't know what D&D is let alone table top role playing games, let alone what this site is for.
Some of you won't have a character yet, some will. Either way, if you're new you're in the right place.

For anyone interested in the Volunteer Zombie Eradication Force, 3.5 D&D, undead apocalypse campaign (aka VZEF Camp), this Community is for:

    - making friends
    - any kind of general conversation (out of character)
    - learning about what Dungeons & Dragons is and how to play
    - deciding what type of game and character you want to play
    - choosing a group you wish to play with (unless you are playing solo)

Finally, and I really shouldn't have to mention this, but...

Please be respectful, even if you can't be kind.
No racism, no sexism, basically... if it end in ism and you're unsure, don't post it.
No erotic fantasy talk (in character or out of character) unless you're in a forum/thread that states you can.
Keep the profanity to a minimum. If you're going to use it, use it right.
    No nudity!
