Dinosaurs: Take Two

There have been a lot of dinosaur-based threads throughout the ages of ENWorld, and this is another one. Enjoy!

Dilophosaurus*
Large Animal
Hit Dice: 7d8+14 (45 hp)
Initiative: +6
Speed: 50ft
AC: 16 (-1 size, +2 Dex, +5 natural)
Base Attack/Grapple: +5/+14
Attacks: Rake +10 melee, bite +8 melee or acidic spittle +7 ranged touch
Damage: Rake 2d6+5, bite 1d4+2 plus poison
Face/Reach: 10ft/5ft
Special Attacks: Acidic spittle, poison
Special Qualities: Darkvision 60ft, low-light vision, scent
Saves: Fort +7, Ref +7, Will +4
Abilities: Str 20, Dex 15, Con 14, Int 2, Wis 15, Cha 11
Skills: Listen +7, Spot +7
Feats: Ability Focus (poison), Improved Initiative, Multiattack
Climate/Terrain: Warm forest, hills, plains and marshes
Organization: Solitary or pair
CR: 4
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always neutral
Advancement: 8-14 HD (Large), 15-21 HD (Huge)

Dilophosaurus are large carnivorous dinosaurs that have evolved several unusual hunting strategies. A dilophosaurus stands about five feet high at the shoulder. It is unusually slender for its size, and its legs, arms and tail are all quite long. Its head is its most unusual feature; the lower jaw is unusually thin and weak for a creature of its size, and the upper jaw has a distinctive kink near the tip of the snout. Two bone plates run along the length of the head. In males, a colorful frill lies along the neck, and it is extended by bony supports in mating displays.

Combat
Dilophosaurus are not particularly stealthy hunters, but they do not need to be. They rely on their speed to chase down potential prey, and rake at it with their strong hind legs. On particularly large and strong prey, they deliver a venomous bite and retreat, waiting for the poison to take its effect before finishing off the wounded animal. When threatened, such as by a kill-thief or well-armed party of adventurers, it uses its poisonous acidic spittle and flees, trying to take as much of its kill as possible.

Acidic Spittle (Ex): Once per day, a dilophosaurus can spit a caustic missile of stomach acids, sticky bile and venomous saliva at a foe. This missile has a maximum range of 60 feet, with no range increments. A foe hit with the missile takes 3d6 points of acid damage and is entangled (-2 penalty to attack rolls, -4 penalty to effective Dexterity). The opponent must also make a Fortitude save (DC 17) or be affected by the dilophosaurus’ venom. A dilophosaurus who uses this attack cannot make poison attacks for another 8 hours, and so adult specimens rarely use this attack unless grievously threatened.

Poison (Ex): A dilophosaurus delivers its poison with each successful bite attack (DC 17) This poison causes fatigue and intense muscle pain. Initial damage 1d6 temporary Strength, secondary damage 1d6 temporary Strength.

Scent (Ex): A dilophosaurus can detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes and track by scent.

* Yes, this is a Jurassic Park style dilophosaurus. They're more cinematic. And at least it's the right size.

As always, comments are welcome.

Nice, I like it a lot. So what's next? Are you taking requests?

I could take requests... and then I'd have to accept submissions. Anyone have any dinosaurs lying around?
But here's what's next. A nice obscure one.
Masiakasaurus
Medium-sized Animal
Hit Dice: 3d8+3 (16 hp)
Initiative: +7
Speed: 40ft, swim 30ft
AC: 16 (+3 Dex, +3 natural)
Base Attack/Grapple: +2/+8
Attacks: Bite +5 melee
Damage: Bite 1d6+3
Face/Reach: 5ft/5ft
Special Attacks: Improved grab, worry
Special Qualities: Darkvision 60ft, lowlight vision, scent
Saves: Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +3
Abilities: Str 14, Dex 16, Con 12, Int 2, Wis 14, Cha 7
Skills: Balance +8, Hide +8, Jump +7, Listen +3, Move Silently +8, Spot +3, Swim +10
Feats: Improved Initiative, Weapon Finesse
Climate/Terrain: Warm costal, forest and marsh
Organization: Solitary
CR: 2
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always neutral
Advancement: 4-6 HD (Medium-sized), 5-9 HD (Large)

Masiakasaurus are shy carnivorous dinosaurs that feed primarily on fish. A masiakasaurus resembles every other small carnivorous dinosaur except in dentition; its teeth are large, irregular and jut forward from the jaw, giving a snaggletoothed appearance. They live predominantly on the shores of lakes and on the banks of rivers, where they fish for food. They are easily startled, and flee from most confrontations. As such, it’s bizarre, wailing cries are heard far more often then masiakasaurus are seen.

Combat
Most masiakasaurus fight nothing larger than the fish they prey on, but if cornered, they will respond with a nasty, jagged bite, clamping to an opponent’s flesh and shaking.

Improved Grab (Ex): Whenever a masiakasaurus hits an opponent of Medium-size or smaller with its bite attack, it can make a grapple check without receiving an attack of opportunity (grapple bonus +8, including a +4 racial bonus). It can choose to conduct the grapple normally, or to only hold its opponent in its jaws (-20 penalty to grapple checks, but the masiakasaurus is not considered grappled). A grappled creature takes worry damage every round.

Scent (Ex): A masiakasaurus can detect approaching creatures, sniff out hidden foes and track by scent.

Worry (Ex): Whenever a masiakasaurus gets a hold with its bite attack, it shakes the foe violently, mirroring its fishing behavior. Grabbed creatures take 2d6+3 points of damage every round the hold is maintained.

Skills: Due to its flexible tail and sure feet, a masiakasaurus receives a +4 racial bonus to Balance and Jump checks. It also gains a +4 bonus to Hide and Move Silently checks made in its native habitat (costal, forest and marsh).

Nice one.

As for a request: The Pentaceratops would be nice...

Whoa. I'm my school's resident dino nut, and even I haven't heard of a masakiasaurus (is that how you
spell it?). Could I submit a giganotosaurus?

Khisanth: If you wnat to do a dino, feel free. Masiakasaurus was discovered in Madagascar in 2001.

As for the dilophosaurus, they were twenty feet long tops, and dinosaurs tend to be pretty low-slung. Seven feet at the shoulder maybe, but not ten.

When measuring animals, height is always measured at the shoulders.

Anyways, anyone care to do the smallest member of the velociraptor family, the bambiraptor?

And if you don't know what a bambiraptor is, go here:

Krishnath, maybe modern animals, but not all dinosaurs ... carnivores like dlophosaurus maybe , but the big plant eaters definitely not.

Well...
Khisanth, most of the sauropods should be measured by shoulder height, as most (diplodocids, camarasaurs, most titanosaurs) were parallel to the ground; however, brachiosaurs are traditionally measured by the height of the head. Most people, including meself, just go by length these days

What, not takers on the Bambiraptor or the Pentaceratops?

As for the differnt creatures actual size, it's most common to measure the lenght of dinos, from the tip of their tails, to the end of their snouts.

Well, Krish, I've been out of town, and there's not much too interesting to do with ceratopsians, but here's a little something I've had on the back burner for some time. It's not a dinosaur, but it's old, big and reptilian.

Lioplureodon
Colossal Animal (Aquatic)
Hit Dice: 20d8+ 200 (290 hp)
Initiative: +5
Speed: Swim 40ft
AC: 19 (-8 size, +1 Dex, +16 natural)
Base Attack/Grapple: +15/+48
Attacks: Bite +24 melee, 2 fin slaps +22 melee
Damage: Bite 4d8+17 (19-20 x2), fin slap 2d6+8 (19-20 x2)
Face/Reach: 40ft/15ft
Special Attacks: Improved grab, swallow whole
Special Qualities: Blindsight 120ft
Saves: Fort +24, Ref +13, Will +9
Abilities: Str 45, Dex 13, Con 30, Int 2, Wis 16, Cha 6
Skills: Hide +9, Move Silently +15
Feats: Great Fortitude, Improved Critical (bite, fin slap), Multiattack, Skill Focus (Move Silently) Weapon Focus (bite, fin slap)
Climate/Terrain: Warm or temperate ocean
Organization: Solitary or pair
CR: 11
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always neutral
Advancement: 21-60 HD (Colossal)

The largest creature in the prehistoric ocean, the lioplureodon is a short-necked plesiosaur supremely adapted to hunting other aquatic reptiles. A liopluerodon resembles a mammoth reptilian whale over eighty feet long. Its four wing-like paddles stretch over twenty feet long, and its head composes about one third of its body length.

Combat
Surprisingly stealthy for a creature of its size, a liopluerodon prefers to ambush its prey from below, grabbing it in their massive jaws, shaking it violently, and then swallowing the still living creature for digestion. They are fiercely territorial, and will attack any intruders, such as ships, without provocation.

Blindsight (Ex): Utilizing echolocation, a liopluerodon can discern objects and creatures within 120 feet. It does not usually need to make Spot or Listen checks to notice creatures within the range of its blindsight. If deafened, or within the radius of a silence spell, the liopluerodon has to rely on it weak vision (maximum range 60 feet)

Improved Grab (Ex): Whenever a liopluerodon hits an opponent of Huge or smaller size with its bite attack, it can make a grapple check without receiving an attack of opportunity (grapple bonus +48). It can choose to conduct the grapple normally, or to only hold its opponent in its jaws (-20 penalty to grapple checks, but the liopluerodon is not considered grappled). A grappled creature takes bite damage every round, and the liopluerodon can choose to swallow its foe whole.

Swallow Whole (Ex): By making a successful grapple check, a liopluerodon may swallow a held foe whole. Once swallowed, a victim takes 2d8+10 points of bludgeoning damage plus 3d6 acid damage every round until it escapes or dies. A successful grapple check allows the creature to climb out of the stomach and into the lioplurodon’s mouth, where another grapple check is required to get free. Alternatively, the swallowed creature can escape by cutting its way out with either claws or a light slashing or piecing weapon. Dealing at least 50 points of damage (AC 20) in this fashion allows the creature to escape. Once a single swallowed creature exits, muscular action closes the whole; another swallowed creature must cut its way out as well. A liopluerodon’s stomach can hold 2 Huge, 4 Large, 16 Medium-sized, 32 Small or 64 Tiny or smaller creatures.

Skills: A liopluerodon receives a +4 racial bonus to all Move Silently checks.

Nice, but still there was another ancient aquatic monstrosity from the age of giant reptiles that was even more deadly. Can't right remember it's name, but it was quite a short name compared to many of it's kin....

It was smaller than Lioplureodon but faster and nastier, and recent fossile evidence suggest that it bore live young.

If anyone could tell me it's name, I would be most grateful.

that could be most any of the ichthyosaurs (they bore live young), bot I wouldn't describe them as deadly. IMHO, nothing in the seas at that time could match Liopleurodon. 120 million years later Carcharodon megalodonmay have matched it (its CR's too low, IMHO) Excuse the scared faces, but those are people seeing one.
