    Here's a quick look at what you can expect inside the Elemental Evil boardgame box. It's a little small and lo-res, but you can make it out.     Coming in February is a new dice building game with a D&D theme.     Matt Sprange has posted The State of the Mongoose, the yearly address covering what is going on behind the scenes at Mongoose Publishing. Highlights include a new way of doing business, a new skirmish game set in the ancient word, a 3D WWII dogfighting miniatures game, a new look for the Traveller RPG, the new edition of Paranoia, miniatures for Judge Dredd, plus some news about video games.

    It's focused more on boardgames than RPGs, but The Guardian features an article about gaming's golden age, which it describes as "sociable, brilliant and driven by the internet". The article points out that game purchases, while still dwarfed by video games, increase 25%-40% every year.

    One of the successful D&D-themed board games from WotC, Lords of Waterdeep, was featured on the TV show South Park last night - at least in a background cameo kind of role! If you're looking for it later, the episode is called Freemium Isn't Free, and it's Episode 6, Season 18. The other games on display are Dead of Winter, Merchants & Marauders, Mice and Mystics, King of New York, and Zombicide.

    Dungeons & Dragons News

    • As I reported this morning, the D&D 5E electronic tools suite, DungeonScape, has been cancelled by WotC. Or, at least, Click for more about D&DWotC's partnership with the software studio, Trapdoor Technologies, who will be closing down the betas this week.     Board Games a'Coming!

    According to ICv2, a since-removed pre-order sell sheet revealed the existence of a new upcoming D&D board game. The title is unknown, and the game is to be designed by WotC but produced by WizKids (who currently produce the D&D Attack Wing and Icons of the Realms miniatures). The sell-sheet revealed a bunch of information:

    • 40 figures, 8 Hero cards, 4 Villain cards, 200 cards, 55 interlocking tiles, 4 double-sized interlocking tiles, 168 tokens, a 20-sided die, an adventure book and a rulebook.

    I talk to to Dominic McDowall about Dragonmeet, the Cthulhu Britannica: London boxed set Kickstarter, and the Doctor Who RPG. Additionally, I spoke to Martin Vaux of Black Box Games about their Lords of War card game on their first company birthday! They, too, have a Kickstarter ending in a few days. Their game won an award at UKGE earlier this year, beating out some heavy competition.

    Wil Wheaton and guests Ed Brubaker (Writer—Captain America, Criminal, Angel of Death), Robert Gifford (Founder—Geek Chic), and Morgan Webb (Host—X-Play) play Pandemic over on Geek & Sundry's latest episode of Tabletop. Pandemic is a cooperative board game designed by Matt Leacock and published by Z-Man Games in 2008, based on the premise that four diseases have broken out in the world, each threatening to wipe out a region. The game accommodates 2 to 4 players, each playing one of five possible specialists: (dispatcher, medic, scientist, researcher or operations expert). The game is unlike most boardgames as the gameplay is cooperative, rather than competitive. Through the combined effort of all the players, the goal is to discover all four cures before any of several game-losing conditions are reached.
