I had an inspiration - I think I'm going to scratch the dwarven thing. I could find almost no information on Hzaka (other than it seems to be big and full of humanoids). I think I'm going to forgo having a region at the start and just tie in being found/rescued by a dragonborn fighter adventurer and brought to Daunton.

I'm playing an evil drow rogue so the last couple pages are of course of great interest to me

My take on my character is not that he's the chaotic spread the evil everywhere and plunge the land into darkness type, simply because that's just not profitable. He's in it for himself, he's morally unbound, that doesn't mean if a kid is about to get run down by a cart in front of him, he won't help, though it is very likely he won't risk himself in the process.

It doesn't mean that he can't have loyalties, even loyalties not based on greed or advancement. The evil displayed by the drow of RA Salvatore or the fiends etc is to me very one dimensional. I'm far more interested in a character who would lie, torture, steal, murder, when it's in his interest, and yet fight to the death standing over the unconscious form of a companion who he values. Maybe you could argue that such a character is neutral, but to be neutral suggests to me that one is actively trying to maintain a balance in their actions.

As for my rogue, I tried to draw on the drow in Daunton angle with the temple of day and night, and left as much of his race's origins as vague as possible until it gets more meat added to it, if someone is working on that I'd be happy to provide some input as at this time I think Step is the only approved Drow in L4W.

I'd guess about the same as a human, maybe a little younger.

In 3.5 D&D, kobolds reached adulthood at age 6. So far no one knows in 4E.

If it matters Hzaka is a pseudo communist (in the pure marxian sense -- communal property, emphasis on service to the state, lack of personal identity) empire dominated by hobgoblins; they're the strongest society on Allaria (though GK may change stuff around there).

The merchants of Bacarte are very concerned about their nascent naval capacity.

Well, as far as the Swordmage goes I'm looking forward to playing one somewhere. Here would be nice, but it sounds like we'll already have a flood of them when that gate opens. Personally, for me, it all comes down to one thing: Swordmage=Jedi! Looking at a lot of the powers I can just see throwing my spinnging electrified blade around the room cleaving through minions, or blasting people with lightning. Using force shields to deflect damage. It's not ALL Jedi, but enough of the powers could be thought of that way so you could pick the ones you do know to build that kind of character power base. (Of course it doesn't help that I just finished beating Star Wars: The Force Unleashed this morning before coming to work. So I don't know why I'd have visuals of Jedi doing all this cool stuff in my head. )

One of my chief objections to the Swordmage is that I'm definetly playing one if we allow them... They are just great fun to play, and in my limited 1st level experience bad ass.

Maybe we can have an all Swordmage party... Lol.

Commies?

There's a land FULL of commies?!

Oh, hell, sign Palindrome up for a trip over there. Sounds like a worthy paragon level quest, convincing them all to become Ayn Rand greed-is-good capitalists and then robbing them blind.

Oh, yeah, baby.

While swordmages sound cool in a Jedi way, Mages are cool in a Gandalf way, though totally lacking the subtlety that Tolkien's magic had). There is only going to be one character that i ever truly enjoy above all others.

A ranger. While they lack some of the mystical connection to the land in 4E that they had in 3E with things like Druid spells, animal companions and a smaller range of skills. I will still be playing one my first time round.

I have recently completed and email the judges a character sheet based on an elf ranger from a nearby land, A land of compassion and empathy that at the same time is far removed from the rest of the world. As such she feels they have forgoten the connection that all have to the world and its inhabitants.
At the same time the other half of her enjoys and loves the thrill of a long drawn out hunt.

Yep, short to say i love a Ranger. It allows me to enjoy and be sucked into world places in a way other characters gloss over. I have a reason to focus on the overland travel, to be as likely to explore deep forests, mountains and lakes as dungeons that promise the usual treasure reward!

Hi, everybody - just found this place and I'll definitely be making a char soon.

I was going to make a Warforged Infernal Warlock until I saw that we already had one. I think instead I'll be making a Dwarf Star Pact Warlock from the Valley of Bone. He's going to be an astronomer who's obsessed with the end of the Mayan Long Count (suitably renamed for the setting). He believes that there will be a great cataclysm in a few years when the next cycle ends, and that a prophecy says a group of strangers from the Shifting Seas can avert it.

Cool. Somewhat surprisingly, we don't have any Dwarves approved (or submitted, I believe) yet. We only got our first submitted Tiefling last week or so.

Yoo Hoo!!! That's me (Cue music for the "Alpaca Farmer Dance"... which is strangely reminicsent of the "Cabbage Patch").

BTW, I was going to act on your hint to make some additions to the KoJ section of the wiki, but I'm not quite sure what the protocol is. Do I just throw some stuff in there, or do I write it up & submit it to a judge?

Thanks

I think it your changes are small or local (e.g. creating a new town or a new NPC in a seldom-used town), just make them. If they're large or likely to affect other characters/adventures, it's probably worth discussing them either in the discussion thread or in a new thread to get other people's input first.

For KoJ in particular, I recently remembered a short conversation in the discussion thread about it, starting about here, which will possibly be of interest to you.

Hello,

I am new to play-by-post gaming and the Living games have acutely captured my interest. I've spent the last few hours exploring the wikipedia for this and perusing through the setting. Several ideas came to mind; however, in the hopes to improve my chances of entering a game I have the following question to propose: What role(s) and class(es) are most needed currently?

Before it is said, yes, I have indeed looked at the approved character section. However, I do not know how many, or if any, of these are fallow. As such, I was hoping that a current GM or player could provide an updated opinion on this.

I'm glad you asked! Currently the list of approved characters by role and class breaks down as follows:

controller 6
striker 13
defender 8
leader 5

cleric 3
fighter 6
paladin 2
ranger 4
rogue 3
warlock 6
warlord 2
wizard 6

In particular, there has been a recent shortage of leaders. I believe all of the existing leaders are on established adventures, and the last group that left the tavern went without a leader, which hurt them badly in their first encounter, IMO.

It's not clear to me at the moment how many characters are inactive. Off the top of my head I know a couple of defenders are inactive, but beyond that I couldn't say.

Warlords Hurrah!

Well that works! The only class I truly had no desire to scoop up was paladin, mainly because I am currently playing one in a IRL game and want to try out so much of the new game erm...stuff? I hate that word..

Primarily, the news of a leader shortage is -quite- exciting. You can expect an incipient story to burgeon within my tiny brain shortly for a warlord. Now, I in no way wish to impose upon anyone, but perhaps this information would be very helpful to those of us seeking to create new characters for the L4E. Perhaps a rundown of class, role, and race could help establish or at least narrow down, the creation of a unique and intriguing story that would add something to the world.

This said, I had written a short background previously and would like to seek aid on altering it to fit the warlord class. It was previously intended as a rogue (which I had seen there were but three of) but I have yet to try a leader and am equally up to the challenge.

Arathi Moontear, Rogue to Warlord?

**background**
Arathi and her family dwelt on the outer edges of the city in a generally middle-class style home. Her twin brother, Aramal, and herself were born on the new moon of the Lunar cycle and considered particularly lucky by their parents. Arathi was a generally wild youth and edged towards the more feral nature of her ancestry. Her parents attempted to reign her in through several schools to diminish this behavior, if not eliminate it. Each school taught Arathi proper manners, eloquent speech and a variety of other skills deemed necessary for a lady.

However, she would have none of it. Her sporadic and capricious moods led to minor rebellions at each school. It was during the third scholastic attempt that Arathi met her friend and mentor, David Quinieth. The human boy was technically younger than her, but comparatively older. He was a cook at school cafeteria and quickly took a shine to the audacious elf as a younger sister. She learned the arts of chicanery and would gleefully play pranks on the other children at school. Her parents never wavered in trying to civilize their daughter.

Arathi had other plans for her life. The elaborate tales of the Five, and particularly [rgue] had fostered a truculent predilection within he young mind. Tales of great treasures, handsome warriors, and glorified adventures filled her mind. Of course, Arathi didn’t have any true idea of the pain and suffering that went along with those stories. That didn’t prevent her from practicing fencing with a dagger or firing a crossbow until she had created a fluid fighting style for herself. She then packed a bag, bought some rope (because you always need rope) and headed towards the tavern to look for adventure. Her parents forbade her to leave but were unsuccessful in preventing their daughter from striking off.

**Description**

Personality: Arathi is no quixotic idealist despite her false perception of what adventuring is like. She has a talkative and egregious personality leading to her making many friends. She epitomizes a duality of stubbornness and realization that is easily her strangest trait. She may be opinionate at times, but typically will go with the flow of life.

Physical Description: Arathi Moontear is still a very young elf. She is slender and pale with short, cropped silver hair. She has a sparrow tattoo on her left shoulder and thin bands of ink running down both arms. Her green eyes are offset by a silver ring in the left eyebrow. She set out of her home with only a few sets of clothes. Her typical wear is a fitted leather jacket of blue dragonhide over a silk blue shirt with a pair of matching blue dragonhide pants. The pants are tucked into brown boots with silver eyelets and wings engraved upon them. Her daggers are set in a silver sash around her waist just beneath the jacket. Finally, her black velvet and leather backpack are carried everywhere with her. When in the field she has the ashen crossbow strapped alongside the daggers. Each bolt is carefully tailored with black fletching from a crow.

EDIT: Any feedback is welcome of course. Nothing seems to come to mind to me, so I may simply craft a new character story..

EDIT EDIT: I <3 pirates. With that said, the fact that no one's taken up the path of a Gith from Laughing Gallows pushed me to take this path. Even if she's not particularly mechanically all that different from one of the current players, I hope that Les is different enough background and personality-wise that she won't fade into the background.

Dawn Raven, Arathi looks very interesting. If you wanted to use that backstory for a warlord, the schools the character was sent to could have been military academies. Arathi could still be wild and seeking adventure, but have picked up a lot of tactics / leadership without realizing it.

Here's a finer breakdown of approved characters:

Humans are popular, especially for wizards and fighters. In fact, other than 4 human wizards and 3 human fighters, the only doubled race-class combo is elf ranger with 2. Lots of variety! I also find the lead the PHB races have over the MM races interesting.
