Just noting, two of my players have taken Actor in different games. Still consider it one of the coolest and best feats in the game. The ability to perfectly mimic voices is an incredible power in the right hands.

The thing about milestone leveling that breaks the association of levels to combat is that it gets applied when you reach the milestone, *however* you reach the milestone. It doesn't have to be "you gain a level when you hit a milestone." It can be, "you gain some number of XP when you hit a milestone." And I think that fixes all the issues with milestone leveling you mention. People who...

I think you are missing the point a bit. Folks are asking whether "violent" is the "natural state" for humans. They then have to turn and look for what the "natural state" for humans actually is... and wind up reaching for straws, because they want to find the thing analogous to the feral cat, when no such thing exists. Basically, "natural" human behavior is everything we already see. ...

You aren't the only one in the thread that has tried to refer to something like the human "natural state". I was speaking to the entire concept with your post as merely a jumping off point, as it was the most recent to use the concept. No. Just as a wild cat is not "without cat influence". Wild is variously, "in a natural environment" or "undomesticated" - which I restated as 'without...

Secret Faces of Velsburg. While traveling through the wilderness the adventurers come across a small hamlet plagued by a recent rash or murders committed by 'The Ghost'. The longer the party stay in Velsburg however, the quicker they realize that the supposedly bloodthirsty spirit preying upon the settlement is not the remote village's only mystery. In this sidequest to save Velsburg the PCs are...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. This allows for more belief systems in the world.

The scientific community recognizes "good" and "evil" as human concepts, not natural states of the universe. The question of whether we are born good or evil makes little sense, when we *define* good and evil only after we are born! There's a problem with discussing our "default state". Consider, for a moment, a housecat. There are housecats that have grown up without significant...

You say that as if humans *have* an identifiable "natural state" - we are a tribal, social species and an extremely extended infant period compared to other animals. We, more than any other creature on the planet, are focused on *learned* behavior, not inborn, "natural" behavior. What is natural for us is to try out a large number of different behaviors, and see what works. I will push back...

The game's rules are certainly largely about combat. The *could* have rules that were as rich for dealing with social/political action, or other activity, but they don't. If we hand players a hammer, we should expect them to treat problems like nails... There are games that do better. The CORTEX+ based Leverage game, for example, does include combat. But that is only one out of five major...

There's "questionable choice" and "end up on the wrong side of the moral argument". Splitting the party to chase down goblins in the woods is a questionable choice, and when they did that, they handled the consequences. Becoming villains is what happens when you are on the wrong side of the moral argument. I think, on their first go ever at RPGs, having them hunted down and either executed...

De-sensitization to violence *does* happen. Perhaps. But I would likely *position* it differently. See above - I was not going to run a game in which 13-year-olds end up on the wrong side of the moral argument. Heck, in games for my adults, if the PCs choose the wrong...

A little while back, I taught my 13-year-old de facto goddaughter how to play D&D. That gave me an entirely new perspective on what "safe" means. There's a little-realized fact that there's no such thing as a no-holds-barred safe space. Safe spaces need boundaries, and the boundaries that are useful and safe for one group may not be for another.

Don't ask, "What would be a good metric?" Ask instead: "What matters to you about a game?" Not just as a thought exercise - Make an actual list of things that matter to you. We can try to separate what of those things are GM/group dependent, and what's rules-dependent, and what measures we could put that could be useful. Metrics should be chosen to answer specific questions.

It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game.

We're going to need you to show more respect for the other posters in the thread, even if you disagree with them. If you find you can't do that, please stop posting in the thread. And in case anyone might forget - this goes for everyone. Treat each other well, or please walk away until you can.

Enthusiasm. While a GM invested in the game theyíre running canít guarantee a good game, a GM not invested in it does guarantee a bad game. Our group is always happy to play any game or system which somebody is excited about running. Because the system takes a back seat to that.

  • 12:20 AM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
I gotta agree with Morrus on the whole CN thing. Thing is, most people, really, are lawful by D&D standards. They follow rules, they work (reasonably well) in groups every day and generally aren't out there to stir things up. Funny thing is, I think most players choose CN because they don't want to allow the DM to have any hooks into their behavior. It's really a shame that 5e ejected "unaligned" because, frankly, I think that's what most folks mean when they say CN. Sorry, but, if your chaotic neutral character is 100% responsible and trustworthy, he's not actually CN.

  • 05:08 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
THAC0 is clearly preferable to BAB, for two reasons. One, it sounds cooler, and closer to the action of hitting. THAC0. It's an aptonym. Second, it is easier. As Morrus has repeatedly explained to the rest of you, addition is easier. With THACO, you are always adding. With BAB, you have to constantly subtract negative numbers. So NOT ONLY do you have to use subtraction (OH NOES!), you ALSO have to subtract negative numbers. I swear, if I ever have to subtract the negative of the proficiency again .... Stop bowing to the tyranny of math.

Alright, it's officail, set for November: "Baldur's Gate III is among the list of over 30 games currently confirmed to be available day one on Google Stadia. That list--which can be viewed below--may change as we approach Stadia's November 2019 release date." https://www.gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-announced-for-google-stadia/1100-6467362/ Morrus unsure if this is relevant to the news for the site, but there it is.

Any ETA on when this will be fixed?...I don't want to be seen as blatantly abusing anything. Is there alternative method I can use to report posts in the mean time? No timetable as yet, AFAIK. Perhaps Morrus could make a glitch announcement and ask that reports be PMed to The Mod Squad?* https://www.memorabletv.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/the-mod-squad.jpg Or, for those unconcerned with anonymous reporting, posting it in Meta? * not pictured: any actual ENWorld Mods.

Morrus Umbran darjr I think I may have discovered the trigger for the posts disappearing: every one I know of that got blacked out was reported.
  • 07:44 AM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned Morrus in post Completely Blank Posts?
Morrus Umbran darjr As I noted above, Iíve personally encountered two blacked out posts by spammers (whom I subsequently banned). The text wasnít merely color matched to the back, because the reported text didnít show even when I quoted it to check. What had been there was simply gone. Something odd is going on.

  • 04:58 AM - Maxperson mentioned Morrus in post Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?
That they are dancing is more about content than description. The thing that makes the scene more interesting is that the kobolds are dancing for some reason, not how the GM describes the dance It's not, or at least it's not entirely content. Dancing is a description of what the kobolds are doing up on the hill. Dancing is also content. This brings me back(again) to the point I made pages ago. Both qualitative description AND content are both necessary to make an interesting scene. One without the other is going to be dull. Also not sure why my posts keep including that quote I think it has something to do with multiquoting. Zardnaar was driving Morrus crazy with it in a thread recently. Maybe one of them could help you figure out how to stop quoting it.

Same as Morrus , a close vote. Many fond memories of 2E, but 3E coming along and "modernizing" things we had houseruled for 2E anyway, makes it my favorite. At least at the beginning.

The site lists the dice and miscellany separate from this: The Essentials Kit. So maybe a new revised version of the starter set, but not Eberron specific it seems. Well, the name to me suggests maybe more of a neo-Expert Set: not an intro product, but a second product for folks who bought the Starter Set and want more. Something for folks with no FLGS, who buy their Magic & DnD stuff at Target or whatnot. Morrus more grist for the mill.
  • 05:12 PM - Parmandur mentioned Morrus in post New D&D Adventure Reveal On 17th May at 'The Descent'
So looks like we were spot on with the Adventure book. "Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus" https://www.renaud-bray.com/Livres_Produit.aspx?id=2843417&def=Dungeons+%26+Dragons+Baldur%27s+Gate%3A+Descent+Into+Avernus+Hardcover+Book+(D%26D+Adventure)%2CCOLLECTIF%2C9780786966769 One correct. 3 more to go. Shout out to Parmandur for being on the Baldurs Gate connection before anyone! Boom! They just kept talking about Baldur's Gate, and getting way too detailed. Interestign that the name pattern matches "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist." Morrus might warrant a new story for your front page.

Morrus I also subscribed as a Silver Supporter on March 25th according to PayPal. I am worried I am going insane because I can't seem to find the donate/subscription/support button/page/whatever anymore. I am positive I donated so it feels vaguely like the website is gaslighting me. I know that 19.99 is the amount I paid through PayPal but I can't find the page that explains how long of a subscription that purchases. (If ANYONE reading this can link me to the page, I'd be very appreciative. Right now I'm not sure if the donate/support button/link has been taken down, if I'm losing my mind, or if I just SUUUUUUPER critically failed my perception check.) Anyway, I, also would really, really appreciate getting my subscriber benefits. (I think) I forbore saying anything until now because I wanted to make sure my payment had PLENTY of time to process and because I didn't want to be a pain in the ass. But as it's been almost a month I need to speak up and I really do want my custom user titl...

  • 06:28 PM - doctorbadwolf quoted Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
In my experience Chaotic Neutral is the evilest evil but your DM said you weren't allowed to be evil. I usually ban it in my games, as well as evil, unless I'm deliberately accommodating evil characters. I've rarely ever seen the "evil" side of CN, and only ever from players that were disruptive no matter what they played. The CN characters I've seen have tended to just be motivated by people and what they want in life, without directly thinking or caring much about broad morality or cosmic scales. Not surprise. CB is flexible morality. You wanna be good, but still able to kill that dude you do not like. Sometimes it's that. Usually it's a morality that is based on something like "hurting people for selfish reasons is bad, as has to be opposed", rather than "XYZ specific actions are Evil". That is, violence isn't good or evil, the results of violence are good or evil. If the result of me killing the dragon is that it stops killing villagers because they can't afford to bring it as many co...

  • 01:15 AM - Charlaquin quoted Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
i misspoke. I meant to say Chaotic Neutral. Ahh, I see. Yeah, thatís probably the most likely non-evil alignment to get banned, but I think DMs disallowing CN is still fairly uncommon.
  • 12:08 AM - Charlaquin quoted Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
In my experience Chaotic Evil is the evilest evil but your DM said you weren't allowed to be evil. I usually ban it in my games, as well as evil, unless I'm deliberately accommodating evil characters. Hence why I said itís the alignment least likely for the DM to allow.

But you canít write rules under the assumption that people will ignore them. This reminds me of one of the things I like best about 13th Age: the Designer Notes. The game is full of sidebars where Jonathan and/or Rob say things like "This bit works like this because of X. If you change it, consider Y."
  • 10:05 PM - Tony Vargas quoted Morrus in post Jonathan Tweet: Prologue to Third Edition

  • 09:44 PM - Bacon Bits quoted Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
And now itís my turn! What is an /s? https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=%2Fs A fairly widespread indicator of sarcasm in text. I've mostly seen it on Reddit, but I've also seen it on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. I suppose traditional forums usually use ;), though. Either way, a concession to Poe's Law is usually a good idea. I my case, I just skipped a middle section of the thread. I read the first 20 or so posts originally, and when I returned I read from my response (linked above) onwards. In what I read has really said the math was "hard" or "easy", but nobody really explained why. So I assumed you were serious.
  • 09:41 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post Jonathan Tweet: Prologue to Third Edition
But you canít write rules under the assumption that people will ignore them. But given the nature of RPG, that is one of the safest design assumptions possible. Baked right into Rule Zero, innit?
  • 09:32 PM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post What would be some good metics to evaluate RPG rules/systems?
It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I probably shouldn't have used the word "metric" because it suggests something objective, whereas I'm imagining a value that's subjective, and/or maybe an aggregate/consensus value. But I do think think there are things that can be evaluated this way, such as the examples I gave. Or maybe it's sort of a correspondence analysis, where you would say the game in question has these features like games A, B, and C, and these other features like games D, and E, but this other feature like game F. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game. The same could be said for driving cars and visiting houses. And yet time is finite.
  • 09:03 PM - lowkey13 quoted Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
And now itís my turn! What is an /s? I know that normally this blog is a place full of joy and happiness and maybe even the occasional Mini-taur joke. But some people, such as me, suffer from Sarcasm Immodulation Disorder. Iím unable to control the amount of sarcasm, irony or sardonic asides in my writing. Also known as Felicity Smoak's Syndrome, SID is a recognized psycho-medical condition which you may have read about in the comments section of Youtube or Cracked.com. Numerous prominent Americans suffer from this debilitating disease Morrus, including the guy who played on Dr. Cox on ďScrubsĒ and entertainment great David Letterman. For this reason, I try to be very careful in marking my comments, as some people are incapable of discerning "sarcasm" and/or "humor" without appropriate cues, including, but not limited to, "/s," giant neon signs that say, "Caution: May Contain Sardonic Material," and/or the following image: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/0f/cc/52/0fcc52e8eb6da2a703d48c648813cce5.jpg Help fight the prejudice, Morrus. Imagine having the love of your life unsure about your marriage proposal ... because she can't tell if you're being sarcastic. Support those of us with SID.

  • 08:08 PM - Bacon Bits quoted Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
To be fair, nobody has carefully explained to me that subtraction is really hard yet. That was a significant portion of my post. It's not about easy vs difficult. It's about how error prone the math is. It's because addition is commutative and subtraction is not. In the example with a THAC0 of 15 and an attack roll of 13, you've got to remember that 15 - 13 = 2 is correct but 13 - 15 = -2 is incorrect. In the example of bonuses, you have to either remember that you have to add them to the die roll or you have to subtract them from your THAC0. So 15 - 13 - 1 is correct, and 15 - (13 + 1) is correct, but 15 - (13 - 1) is incorrect, and 15 - 13 + 1 is incorrect. In the example of penalties, you have to either remember that you have to add them to the die roll or you have to subtract them from your THAC0. So 15 - 13 + 1 is correct, and 15 - (13 - 1) is correct, but 15 - (13 + 1) is incorrect, and 15 - 13 - 1 is incorrect. Compare that to an addition based system. In t...

  • 09:10 PM - Flips quoted Morrus in post New WOIN errata?
It hasnít proved to be a problem in any of my games. That is what is important, and I am sure a lot of playtesting has happened as well. It was just a concern that I had. Thanks for your replies :)
  • 05:33 PM - Flips quoted Morrus in post New WOIN errata?
Dang, thatís a grade 78 character minimum! Or Grade 11 (8d6) with some strategic bonuses and exploits (high ground, aim, flank/xfire, point blank shot, jouster, luck) gets you to 11d6 or 12d6 pretty easily. I am not saying it is guaranteed to get you there all the time, but it not unlikely to come up. Maybe this is exactly as intended, but if a party of 11th grade characters can generally ignore the fact that their enemy has 100+ DEF, it worries me. Other than scaling up the number of 6s required (like half your pool, min 3) I am not sure that there is a solution. I think an early draft was like this.

  • 10:03 PM - Oofta quoted Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
Wow? So ... you don't accept that some people found THAC0 painful? You keep asking people to explain it to you. It's simple. Some people find it more difficult. Period. End of story. You ask "why" ... well the answer is that apparently not everyone thinks like you do. My wife started playing D&D with 2E and she hates THAC0 because it makes her subtract and she finds the numbers (especially negatives) confusing. She's a lot smarter than me (and most people for that matter) in a lot of ways, but she would never go back to 2E because of the "backwards math". I can't give you a better explanation, nobody can. Some people find it more difficult and greatly prefer the way the rules changed for 3. That's either something you can accept or not.
