It's just a game. It's just a movie. It's just a book. It's just a joke. It doesn't matter if I meant it as a *joke* right? It is "just" a thing, until that thing harms someone. Until that thing imposes limits for no good reason. Until that thing gets repeated enough that we let the sense of the fiction bleed into reality. Our stories don't take place in a vacuum. They take place...

Taking 5E out of the equation, what’s your favourite D&D edition — and why? I spent the longest time with 2E, but the launch which excited me most was 3E. I think I’d vote 2E, but it’s close. For poll purposes, OD&D includes everything and overlapping before 1E, including BECMI, etc. Even Chainmail, if that’s anybody’s vote.

Simulacrum has the clause "lacks the ability to learn or become more powerful, so it never increases its level or other Abilities, nor can it regain expended Spell Slots" I was curious how strict people are with that interpretation. I can see it range as loose as "just can't gain XP" to as strict as "anything outside of the shortest term memory it can't remember". How do you treat it?

This was a wonderfully rationalized post, I greatly appreciate the effort. It also helps solve some of the cleric questions such as: If 5th level clerics can cast Create Food and Water...do you even need farming? (the answer based on your numbers: you could feed 3,000 people or so if every 5th level cleric did the job...a nice boost, but certainty not supporting a 5 million person kingdom). If...

In 5e we intentionally changed it so yes, if you have two attacks you can fire and reload and fire again. But the next round you have to use a bonus action to relax before firing once. Guns in 4e were better than they are in 5e, sure to how attack powers would let you use multiple dice.

Quickstarters are a big thing these days, and typically it doesn’t greatly affect the funding total. The sense of urgency adds incentive. In fact, the opposite is often true — long Kickstarters can do worse; 40 day Kickstarters do worse than 30 day ones, for example.

All with images that showed how very, very similar to the original the Axanar use was. I mean, really, anyone looking at it can see that they're intended to be the same. More than "similar". There are no "generic" ships on the list that I can see. There are very specifically Federation, Klingon, and Vulcan ships, following visual designs set in canon Trek sources.

Anecdote, not data, but I taught a couple of 13/14 year-olds to play 5e, and they found it plenty accessible. One of them quickly went off to put together a game with her peers, who also had zero difficulty picking it up. We could have a long argument about what's more...

I agree, there’s nothing in fabricate that limits its ability to merge materials, in fact many of the examples would be just that. Turning ruby dust into a ruby seems completely within its purview. Now it won’t be a pretty ruby unless you had gem cutting but a ruby nonetheless.

I've read some nice analysis of writing that puts it like this: It isn't that they are being "extemporaneous" - they are still following the outline G.R.R.M. gave them. It is that with a fixed number of episodes left, they had to allow the plot to drive events, rather than characterization. The show's problem is that now characters must get from A to B for the big finishes, whether doing so...

If you didn't see lawsuits flying about DS9 vs B5, you wouldn't see them here. The shared ideas are very general, and copyright only applies to specific expressions. Everyone can see the homage, but not so much any direct copying. Also, given the involvement of Brannon Braga, I am pretty sure The Orville folks know exactly where the line is.

Yep. I'm just talking about the Fabricate spell, and what it could accomplish. Making perfect crystals from dust does not seem to be its purview. Yes. Spell components, in general, speak to gold piece value, rather than weight or size. Effectively, the spell component needs *value attributed by people* to be used, which is interesting and appropriate for magic.

I think so. Freyar might correct me. But, light follows geodesics. From the event horizon inwards, there are no geodesics that ever carry you *farther away* from the singularity, iirc. They all spiral inwards to varying degrees. Each time you take a step towards the singularity, there is no going back out. There may be some exceptions, especially for black holes with high rates of spin. ...

That's exactly what this exercise is. So if we assume a normal dnd setting, assuming high level people exist (even if rare), and the standard phb spell exist....we want to have an economy that works "normally". So my original post was to get from suggestions from people on how to rationalize that. Basically....why is the economy normal? Why aren't these hyper intelligent mid level wizards not...

I've never seen Bleach. Honestly, I think I might have cribbed the name from the old OLD setting Daemonforge, which was the original reason for the website EN World, back when it was just a partner site to Eric Noah's 3rd Edition News & Rumors Site. Around 2001 or '02 we created our own setting (hence the name, EN World), and one of the conceits was that dead souls couldn't make it to the...

This was the massively fortuitous advantage they had — the whole subscription base of Dragon and Dungeon magazine who wanted to keep playing 3.x. And why Pathfinder can’t be repeated, even if the other circumstances were to somehow repeat themselves.

One can reasonably assume that XP is only gained during the course of an adventure. Otherwise it’s not really a game.

Also note - a change in voice can also be key in allowing yoru players to know without having to ask whether it is the NPC speaking, or the GM speaking. So you can have: Evil Wizard: "And now, I shall disintegrate you all!" GM: Roll for initiative. and not Evil Wizard: "And now, I shall disintegrate you all! Roll for initiative!" The difference is between a combat starting...

You wouldn't use Beshela; you'd use She Who Writhes. I don't have a list written up right now, but off the top of my head, the fey titans, Ashima-Shimtu, maybe a dead dragon tyrant, Gidim, maybe Egal the Shimmering, Hewanharimau (I think I'm spelling that right), etc etc. Heck, let Leska be a patron if your group played War of the Burning Sky.

Nope. They are just inside the event horizon, looking out. Photons from outside are falling in at them - they can detect those. There will be some warping of the field of view, but the event horizon does not present a discontinuity. If you are just outside the event horizon, looking around, and then step just inside, the world will look much the same. Pretty much, yes. The event...

Oh, their handling of the tidal forces can be explained - we know they can generate gravity (to keep people with feet on the deck, and probably more dynamically to keep crew members from becoming red smears on the bulkheads when they perform high acceleration maneuvers). They just use internal gravity generators to counter the effects.

Inspired by CoC and similar systems. I haven’t thought it all the way through yet. It’s very similar to the way CoC does it. Percentile system. Everything is a skill. You improve with failure. Every time you fail a skill check, the skill improves by 1%. Technically they can go over 100% (modifiers might bring it down). Hmmm. Definitely easy to abuse though. Find lots of easy tasks and...

Nope. That part is pretty much okay. Light falling in to a black hole does not *stop* at the event horizon. It falls in, and could be detected on the inside. Okay, technically it gets blue-shifted to gamma rays on the way in, but that's the *least* of the problems with the black hole bit. There isn't any particular pressure inside a black hole. It is still a vacuum, for one thing. ...

I finally got around to watching the final episode. It was like someone in the writer's room said, "Hey, waitaminute. We are a Trek homage show. If we haven't made science-literate geeks have at least one moment of abject apoplexy this season, we aren't doing our job!" Other than my speachless gesticulating at the screen for a few moments, it was decent.

Yes. Simply put - the Native Americans are not a single culture with a unified pantheon. There are several different traditions and belief systems among them. Not equivalent. Yes, among the Norse gods there were Aesir and Vanir and other groups. But all of those characters spent time in Asgard, interacted, and knew each others names, and appear in the same stories. Prey, sans predators, become a problem. The prey species overpopulates, overgrazes, does damage to the forest ecosystem, experiences famine, has issues with disease and parasites, many of which are...

The site lists the dice and miscellany separate from this: The Essentials Kit. So maybe a new revised version of the starter set, but not Eberron specific it seems. Well, the name to me suggests maybe more of a neo-Expert Set: not an intro product, but a second product for folks who bought the Starter Set and want more. Something for folks with no FLGS, who buy their Magic & DnD stuff at Target or whatnot. Morrus more grist for the mill.

So looks like we were spot on with the Adventure book. Shout out to Parmandur for being on the Baldurs Gate connection before anyone! Boom! They just kept talking about Baldur's Gate, and getting way too detailed. Interestign that the name pattern matches "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist." Morrus might warrant a new story for your front page.

Morrus I also subscribed as a Silver Supporter on March 25th according to PayPal. I am worried I am going insane because I can't seem to find the donate/subscription/support button/page/whatever anymore. I am positive I donated so it feels vaguely like the website is gaslighting me. I know that 19.99 is the amount I paid through PayPal but I can't find the page that explains how long of a subscription that purchases. (If ANYONE reading this can link me to the page, I'd be very appreciative. Right now I'm not sure if the donate/support button/link has been taken down, if I'm losing my mind, or if I just SUUUUUUPER critically failed my perception check.) Anyway, I, also would really, really appreciate getting my subscriber benefits. (I think) I forbore saying anything until now because I wanted to make sure my payment had PLENTY of time to process and because I didn't want to be a pain in the ass. But as it's been almost a month I need to speak up and I really do want my custom user titl...

...arget). So it's rules legal as long as the movement, Ready action, and trigger are all faithfully applied and resolved. Whether or not you find the outcome satisfying even though it's rules legal is another matter though. This. The dm can move them, one at time, and then have them wait to ready an action to attack. but Telvin: - If they had multiple attacks, they'd lose their extra attacks because readying takes your action and then it takes your 'reaction' to make the attack. You can't ready multiple attacks. Really, in this scenario(because of pack tactics), only the first bloodhawk (per PC) needs to ready until any of their other allies moved in. The others can just move in and attack as long as one of their allies was already adjacent. So, if they DM felt bloodhawks were smart enough to move and ready and only attacked once, then it's legal. With INT 3, I might have made the first bloodhawk attack with a normal attack...maybe. 3 is still pretty smart. Morrus Hmmmm. What *is* the rule for simultaneous initiative? Having them all move then all attack creates a massive tactical advantage over having them each move then attack. For me, they all go at once but still 'one at a time.' It probably evens out because now the PCs can all go simultaneously and use the same tactics. Although, it makes initiative a bit more important, I think. Having the PCs all go first and take out several of the bloodhawks before they acted might have changed the outcome. Telvin Who won initiative?

  • 04:43 PM - CleverNickName mentioned Morrus in post Critical Role Kickstarter Predition Game: Guess the Funding Outcome (GTFO)
Thanks to the #CritterPush during last night's broadcast, the Kickstarter blew through their final stretch goal (of $8.8M) and then another $111K before it slowed back down. mortwatcher barely got to spend any time at all in the limelight, before Henry took the lead. Last night's event really blew up my spreadsheet too, which depends on a smooth U-shaped graph and wasn't designed to handle spikes like this. I'm now predicting Morrus to win...but let's be honest, nobody knows anymore. Critters are crazy. (For those not in the know, the #CritterPush event was coordinated in the Kickstarter comment section by a handful of pledges who thought it would be hilarious if they broke their final stretch goal live during their regular broadcast. So they coordinated tens of thousands of donors over social media, asking everyone to increase their pledges by just $5 to accomplish that task. It worked better than they had hoped, because like I said: Critters are crazy.)

I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Keaton and Ledger were both highly derided choices until they proved to be excellent. Actors act! Yeah, both actors were heavily criticised. People were furious about Ledger playing the joker... but turns out he might be one of the best Joker's of all time (second only to Mark Hamill in my opinion). Then again, DC is having an epic dance with failure lately. If they get Batman right with Pattison, it's probably on accident.

  • 06:10 PM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post Thinking about an advancement system
There needed to be? Doesn't common sense apply at this stage? Nope. This is the Internet. If you can only roll when the GM tells you to, then the method of play becomes convincing the GM that you should be allowed to roll. If you can only advance when there would be a consequence for failure, then your job is to convince the GM that the consequences would be meaningful. The rules put the GM in the position of playing the bad guy, who resists your attempts at having fun. There is a good point here, although I'm about as happy with the packaging as Umbran is. Advancement by (conflict resolution) failure means there's no advancement if the GM doesn't ask for conflict rolls. In such a situation, yes, the player has an incentive to try and roll. I’m struggling with all the Arrowverse superhero shows right now. Flash has lost its sense of fun, Arrow is boring, Legends is just slapstick. Supergirl is currently the best of them. We watched them and they were alright but dumped the lot. Gotham, Agents, Arrow, Flash all went downhill. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones were better but got cancelled. Iron Fist was just bad.

eBay for me again then, I guess. you cant just wait till september? i mean i get it that june to september is a huge exclusive window for Target, but... i suppose for review purposes it sucks. i am actually surprised there isnt more Hasbro interference on how wizards/D&D release stuff and how they handle exclusive releases. also i think they have done well for wizards/D&D with the IP tie in, the rick and morty thing sounds fantastic, and i personally enjoyed the stranger things tie in, i also got it for 12 dollars.

Yup. I guess they were under an embargo. They kept the date embargo, but likely somebody missed the "after 5 PM" or whatever part of the memo.
  • 06:30 PM - Celebrim quoted Morrus in post Thinking about an advancement system
Find lots of easy tasks and repeat. Though I guess you’d stop failing them, so your score would remain static. I've always liked the CoC system in that it "made sense" that what the player would get better in would be what they practiced doing, and it had built in balance that the better you were the harder it was to advance. Mouse Guard does something similar where to advance you must accumulate a certain number of successes and failures. And that probably makes even more sense. But over the years I've gotten away from always caring about what made sense. Right now I mostly care whether the math works. And for an...

I’m struggling with all the Arrowverse superhero shows right now. Flash has lost its sense of fun, Arrow is boring, Legends is just slapstick. Supergirl is currently the best of them. The crossover shows, in an attempt to force viewers to watch the shows that they weren't currently also watching, had the affect on me of making me drop the lot. Unfortunately it seems that amazon has dropped "The Tick", which I was enjoying.
  • 03:42 PM - damned quoted Morrus in post Fantasy Grounds Usage Stats Through Q1 2019: D&D Up, Pathfinder Down
The Amazon sales rankings suggest otherwise. Or they suggest what these stats also suggest and that is the market is growing. 5E is without any doubt the best selling D&D variant and D&D has almost always been the best selling RPG (bar that period during 4E that we dont talk about in polite company). I have shelves and shelves of dead tree RPG books. But I have even more digital RPG content. And I buy digital RPG content at more than 10:1 ratio to physical books these days. I havent stopped buying physical RPG books but Im far more selective about the physical ones that I do buy.

OK. https://i.imgur.com/IRIIU87.jpg "Some updates and tweaks" to the system doesn't sound like a simple reprint incorporating the errata to me but, as you so eloquently put it, OK. EDIT: omgosh that's huge, is there a way to shrink it to a normal human level?
  • 06:16 PM - J. H. Frank quoted Morrus in post Warhammer 40K Wrath & Glory Now To Be Produced By... Cubicle 7!
Yeah, but “reprint” can’t. GW just released a new Chaos codex that is an exact copy of the first one, just with an extra signature of pages worked in holding entirely new pages stolen from a different, newer supplement. It was absolutely a “revised reprint” or “expanded reprint” or even just a “reprint.” This prescriptivist thing where people are acting like they can divine the exact plan from two words with variable meanings is remarkable. My only position is that I am assuming the worst because that is what I expect from Wrath & Glory now.

We literally only have 30 of these printed for the expo (there will be many more printed later, don’t worry!) so it’s strictly first come first served. Please do stop by and say hello Heads up...I believe that is May 31st-June 2nd that you will be there. Good Luck and hope many stop by to see you!
  • 05:22 PM - Joshua Randall quoted Morrus in post Why Did Paizo Never Make A Pathfinder/Starfinder Magazine?
This was the massively fortuitous advantage they had — the whole subscription base of Dragon and Dungeon magazineYes. Getting the client list is hugely valuable, and it's pretty shocking Wizards was willing to give that up. Somebody negotiated a very good deal for Paizo, either in the original negotiations when they started publishing Dragon / Dungeon magazines, or in the negotiations when they stopped publishing those.
  • 05:10 PM - MechaPilot quoted Morrus in post The Most Popular D&D Character Name Is "Bob"
What's the name of your D&D character? As I suspect is true for most players, I have a few characters in different games at the moment: Drea (a darve, i.e. alternate version of drow, assassin played in a modern game that mixes d20 modern and 5e). Velishra (a tiefling wizard who ascended to actual demonhood) Evedra (a human utility wizard who's mute because her tongue was cut out). Mallucia (an asimaar light cleric who gets her powers from her belief in herself as a nacent hellgoddess) What these stats appear to tell us is that nearly 10% of people call their character "Bob", and about 12% seems to just use their class name, such as "Cleric" or "Bard". Lots of people seems to name their characters after Game of Thrones' Varys, but spell it differently, and lots like "dark" names like Ash, Raven, Ember, and Shadow. Lilith is also a dark name. IIRC, it means night in Hebrew. The name is also probably related to Lilitu, the Sumerian goddess of night. And, it has a place in th...
