I am guessing not, though I cannot be sure, of course. It sounds a whole lot like the actress Gin Torres (Zoe, from Firefly). But it perhaps more likely someone who is a series regular.

That's some good stuff. I should assemble a list of DM-created resources for other DMs to use. Why did I not see this until 1am on a Friday night of a long holiday weekend? Remind me when the sun's out and I have no social obligations for a while. :)

I'm flattered by the praise. And goodness knows after the ending of Game of Thrones my pride is saying, "Psst, you know how to end long stories. Write some!" But long campaigns take a long time, and I'm planning to get a master's degree in library science after a 15 year break from school, so I don't want to commit to an adventure path until I get a sense of how much time the schoolwork will...

You could choose your own publishing strategy, of course. If it were me, I’d be more focused and specific. I’d go single one-shot skirmish encounters with a range of parameters. I’d look at some of FFGs Star Wars skirmish stuff.

Fine. Parchment uses sheepskin. Papyrus needs papyrus plants. Whatever you are using - if you expect lots of books to be burned, those books must be printed on something! Whatever they are printed on must be made in major quantities. Again - whatever you are using, you still need a lot of it to produce enough books for book burning like what is being discussed here. Whatever those...

Beware short definitions. They tend to miss meeting. There is a connotation to "status quo" beyond that - the status quo is the existing state of affairs and that has been the state for some significant time. The status quo is the current state that is relatively stable or static, and has not been changing much. You do not refer to the status quo of a highly dynamic situation in which the...

Archtypically, for a game like D&D, we buy (or write) a setting book, and then we have to assemble (or purchase) an adventure which takes particular elements of the setting, and places them in a current situation the PCs have to deal with. When we say "the setting is the situation" is to say we haven't bothered writing a whole darned book of setting, and then plucked elements out of it to make...

There's any number of works of sci-fi that include longer-life. However, it may not be the best source of plot points. "We all live longer now," isn't much of a story-driver in and of itself. And, in terms of visual media, it doesn't generate that much that is interesting to *see* on the screen. You get more mileage out of things that imply conflicts - like "the rich live long and better...

The goals of play can be found with the following question - why are the *players* bothering to play. The mechanics are there to help the players attain the goals of play. For some, really interesting tactical wargaming may be a goal for play. For another, it may be emotional social roleplaying, and so on. Everyone has their reasons to sit at the table. Well, if you don't do anything towards the goals, or even take on challenging issues, you don't get XP. Burning down a house is something anyone can do, and takes no special effort - oil, toches, whoomph! Done. Why should they get a reward for that? You aren't *entitled* to XP - calling this punitive is kind of like saying that, if you don't work, your employer is being "punitive" for not...

For the same reason you don't give a 15th level character XP for killing a goblin - if it is too easy, or there is no risk to the character, they don't earn XP. Also, for reason that burning down the house doesn't actually guarantee anyone is defeated. In the classic module,...

Yeah, the reason WotC gave up the magazine publishing in the first place was a desire to divest it completely, so they sold all that to Paizo along with the licensing contract. As to why Paizo didn’t continue a magazine, it was already not a great money-maker for them to produce in that format (paper costs, subscription prices, etc.) they already had the vending web site by the time the license...

I voted 2E, but I like several for different reasons: - I said 2E because I ran two of my longest-running campaigns on it; it’s flexibility was such that I could pull in a lot of 1E material without throwing it out of whack, and I home-brewed that system the most by far. It was also the system under which some of the most awesome campaign settings ever were created. - I love Basic D&D...

No zombies, please! Don’t mind a deep history series, but the zombies were always the part of GoT I was least interested in. Walking Dead is tedious enough! Arya in her own on a brand new continent could be fun, though that’s a totally new show basically, with just the one character to link it to the rest.

Humans help define and reinforce their moral and ethical positions via their stories. The idea that stories are not reality, and therefore should have no influence on the real world, ignores much of the purpose of human storytelling - and flies in the face of how good stories have significant emotional impact on people. "Grown-ups," are the people on the planet who do the most senseless...

My understanding is that HBO wanted the showrunners to keep going for more seasons, and offered money for more episodes, but Weiss and Benioff declined. Even if the shorter seasons were imposed on them, there are myriad ways to write the ending of this show that make the events leading up to this season have more import. Babylon 5's fourth season is stupendous because, despite being...

Television does not always give you the luxury of knowing how you are going to be allowed to end your story. My understanding is that the decision to have the 7th and 8th season be brief was a business decision made after that (and other issues we could point to) were already in motion. When they cut your episode count, you have to cut material. Such is the nature of television at the moment....

Oh that's nonsense. There's fantasy tropes of the hero fighting a heroic duel and saving the day and winning the princess. That stuff he's pushing back on. But then there's just good storytelling. You don't devote 2 seasons to a character gaining a skill only to have her not even bring up that she has that skill. And especially in GRRM's writing, characters are supposed to act realistically,...

It’s real vulnerability is dispel magic, one hit and it’s poof. It’s biggest power is it’s raw nova, a wizard or paladin that can just blow all of their spells in rapid session, just wrecking everything in site.

You seem to forget one of GRRM's stated purposes in writing the series - to teach genre fans lessons about how things don't work out the way they want them, to specifically defy your narrative expectations.

It wasn't original. They were writing to GRRM's outline. Each episode costs something like $10 million to produce. To get it remade, you don't need a petition with 1 million signatures. You need $100 million.

Let's see . . . who should be King? Bran: How about me? I've got a good personal story. Tyrion: Look, you wee sh**, you can see the future, knew Daenerys was going to burn thousands of innocents, and didn't say a thing. You're practically an accomplice! You're the last person I'd ever trust. I regret ever giving you that saddle, you ingrate!

Number of faces worn by Arya? Zero. Number of political schemes enacted by Sansa: maaaybe one if "telling Tyrion the truth" counts as a scheme. Number of useful things Bran learned with his visions: maaaybe one, if "the Night King wants to kill me, not that he doesn't want to kill everyone else too" counts as useful.

Defcons morale break is a solid mechanic if you want that to be the default in your campaign. If you want it to be more “here and there”, the key is: 1) different goal other than killing. It’s getting the item, saving a person, etc 2) excessive time pressure. Sure the party will win, but it will weaken them for the next thing, and they don’t have time to rest. Now they seriously debate...

Another wonderful article! You have completely sold me that such spells would not wreck the economy. So now all that is left is the PC question. So as you have stated, a Pc wizard selling weapons and armor wouldn’t break the bank, the market can likely absorb the extra goods...unless it was glutted already. So if we assume “average profit” for a given crafting day (since the wizards will...

The text wasn’t merely color matched to the back, because the reported text didn’t show even when I quoted it to check. What had been there was simply gone. Something odd is going on.

  • 04:58 AM - Maxperson mentioned Morrus in post Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?
That they are dancing is more about content than description. The thing that makes the scene more interesting is that the kobolds are dancing for some reason, not how the GM describes the dance It's not, or at least it's not entirely content. Dancing is a description of what the kobolds are doing up on the hill. Dancing is also content. This brings me back(again) to the point I made pages ago. Both qualitative description AND content are both necessary to make an interesting scene. One without the other is going to be dull. Also not sure why my posts keep including that quote I think it has something to do with multiquoting. Zardnaar was driving Morrus crazy with it in a thread recently. Maybe one of them could help you figure out how to stop quoting it.

The site lists the dice and miscellany separate from this: The Essentials Kit. So maybe a new revised version of the starter set, but not Eberron specific it seems. Well, the name to me suggests maybe more of a neo-Expert Set: not an intro product, but a second product for folks who bought the Starter Set and want more. Something for folks with no FLGS, who buy their Magic & DnD stuff at Target or whatnot. Morrus more grist for the mill.

...arget). So it's rules legal as long as the movement, Ready action, and trigger are all faithfully applied and resolved. Whether or not you find the outcome satisfying even though it's rules legal is another matter though. This. The dm can move them, one at time, and then have them wait to ready an action to attack. but Telvin: - If they had multiple attacks, they'd lose their extra attacks because readying takes your action and then it takes your 'reaction' to make the attack. You can't ready multiple attacks. Really, in this scenario(because of pack tactics), only the first bloodhawk (per PC) needs to ready until any of their other allies moved in. The others can just move in and attack as long as one of their allies was already adjacent. So, if they DM felt bloodhawks were smart enough to move and ready and only attacked once, then it's legal. With INT 3, I might have made the first bloodhawk attack with a normal attack...maybe. 3 is still pretty smart. Morrus Hmmmm. What *is* the rule for simultaneous initiative? Having them all move then all attack creates a massive tactical advantage over having them each move then attack. For me, they all go at once but still 'one at a time.' It probably evens out because now the PCs can all go simultaneously and use the same tactics. Although, it makes initiative a bit more important, I think. Having the PCs all go first and take out several of the bloodhawks before they acted might have changed the outcome. Telvin Who won initiative?

  • 04:43 PM - CleverNickName mentioned Morrus in post Critical Role Kickstarter Predition Game: Guess the Funding Outcome (GTFO)
Thanks to the #CritterPush during last night's broadcast, the Kickstarter blew through their final stretch goal (of $8.8M) and then another $111K before it slowed back down. mortwatcher barely got to spend any time at all in the limelight, before Henry took the lead. Last night's event really blew up my spreadsheet too, which depends on a smooth U-shaped graph and wasn't designed to handle spikes like this. I'm now predicting Morrus to win...but let's be honest, nobody knows anymore. Critters are crazy. (For those not in the know, the #CritterPush event was coordinated in the Kickstarter comment section by a handful of pledges who thought it would be hilarious if they broke their final stretch goal live during their regular broadcast. So they coordinated tens of thousands of donors over social media, asking everyone to increase their pledges by just $5 to accomplish that task. It worked better than they had hoped, because like I said: Critters are crazy.)

But how would you have night time inside a hollow sphere? In this setting people leave on planets and moons within the Dyson Sphere. It's not a Hollow Earth setting, a Dyson Sphere is the size of a solar system in this case with hundreds of inhabited planets and moons inside.
  • 09:43 AM - Paul Farquhar quoted Morrus in post Setting Idea: Arcane Dyson Sphere
But how would you have night time inside a hollow sphere? There is a couple of ways to achieve that, and I don't remember if they discussed it in the video about the GoT credit sequence. The actual credit sequence itself suggests the Sun is occluded, but that could be artistic licence. They do allude to the hollow sphere nature of the world being connected to the long variable length winters. I only got about a third of the way through the first book, so I don't know if the novels address cosmology at all - I suspect they don't. Of course it might be that the Magisters believe they live inside a hollow sphere, but are mistaken. Apart from occlusion, the other method is solar variability. The Sun simply goes dim for half of every 24 hours. That would certainly explain the wonky seasons.

Do what, now? Game of Thrones? It's in the opening credit sequence (and confirmed in the video where they discussed making the sequence on one of the DVD extras).

I’m not familiar with either programme. I am sure they are both excellent. Like The Graham Norton Show or The Jonathan Ross Show, but every weeknight. It used to be called The Late Show with Johnny Carson.

I thought the trailer looked great right up until the silly plane bit at the end. Did I see two Jumbo Jets crashing in slow motion with somebody sanding on top of one of them? Urgh. C-130s from the look and the fact that there's a quick shot of a pallet with a hummer dropping with someone holding to the underside of the pallet. It looks like one of the terminators did the whole arms into blades to cling to one of the planes. You mean post-T1. T1 introduced the T800. T2 introduce the T1000. I dropped words from my statement while typing it, It should have said ..."did right was give us cool-looking new models"

Am I right in saying that you have to buy something on Amazon to rate it? And the street date was yesterday? I’m betting these people haven’t even read it yet! Hmm... I think you need to buy "something", but not the product in question. If you've actually bought the product from Amazon, a written review has the tag "Verified Purchase". (Ratings... not so much!) There's more than one review I've seen where they've criticised the shipping rather than the product. Cheers!

That's not how I would interpret 5-stars. Reasonably, yes; however, ratings online are weighted to 5 stars.
  • 02:34 PM - Mistwell quoted Morrus in post Amazon ratings of Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Well, presumably 1 star and 5 stars are equal extremes, unless you don't agree with them. It's a binary world these days - things are either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever. I rate your opinion 1 star. ONE STAR I SAY!!!!!!!!!!!! Worst. Post. EVAR!!!!! https://memegenerator.net/img/instances/70755053.jpg
  • 12:25 PM - Hussar quoted Morrus in post Amazon ratings of Ghosts of Saltmarsh
That's not how I would interpret 5-stars. True, but, that is generally how ratings are done. That's why most reviews skew so high. Really, a 7/10 should be a pretty high rating, it's higher than the majority of other similar stuff out there. But, unfortunately, what it really means is that it's a barely adequate product because the baseline is 9 or 10 out of 10. Same goes for 5/5. It makes reviews pretty much pointless in most cases.
  • 10:44 AM - Paul Farquhar quoted Morrus in post Amazon ratings of Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Well, presumably 1 star and 5 stars are equal extremes, unless you don't agree with them. It's a binary world these days - things are either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever. Not quite. One Star needs an explanation, since there must be something very badly wrong. Five Star simply means "it does exactly what it says on the tin" since the advertising clearly gives the best possible interpretation of the product. Also, given the tendency for the internet to be negative, it is much more likely that a One Star is political (by which I include any reason unrelated to the quality of the product itself, such as "I hate what Hasbro is doing with Eberron").
  • 07:01 AM - ccs quoted Morrus in post Game of Thrones s1e1
Hmm. Question: why does Renly think he has a claim? Stannis does (in fact he’s the rightful heir), and Joffrey does via deception, but where does Renley’a claim come from? (I say all this knowing that it doesn’t matter because at the end is a dragon). He's the youngest of the 3 Baratheon brothers. Robert, Stannis & then Renly Baratheon. He's 4th in line after Joffery, Tommen, then Stannis. He does have a claim, just a lot weaker than the rest.

  • 09:16 PM - doctorbadwolf quoted Morrus in post "I'm BATMAN!" - Robert Pattison
Michael Keaton is a great actor. He even nailed Ray Kroc in The Founder on Netflix. Have not watched a Batman movie since the Dark Knight. When you basically nail perfection anything else is gonna look bad. "Perfection"? lol oof. It's pretty good movie, with a batman that is...fine, I guess? It's probably the third best live action Batman movie, maybe 4th. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Keaton and Ledger were both highly derided choices until they proved to be excellent. Actors act! And Pattinson is a morbid weirdo who comes across at a casual glance as a vapid pop star. Literally my only worry with him is the physical build, but if Keaton can pull it off, I'm sure he can too.
  • 05:46 PM - lowkey13 quoted Morrus in post What the Hell?
Is it set in the 70s or in the future? My recollection (remember- I read this a LONG time ago, when I was much younger) is that the protagonist died in the present time, but it was set some time in the future (due to waiting, like you tend to do in the afterlife)- that said, the characters were almost all fictional or people from history; I can't recall anyone that was alive at the time I read it that was said to have died. EDIT- OH! So, I looked it up on Wikipedia; apparently, there was a "sequel" in 2010, and that referred to Sagan. I know nothing about that.
  • 12:04 PM - Joker quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 6---THE END
So did Bran basically plan all this from the start? I think he's like a super computer and sees a lot of different possible paths at once. He then tries to steer people in the right direction for the best outcome, taking into account how people's actions might change if he tells them anything. But that's just how I choose to see it. The makers of the show have been uncomfortable with the magic elements from the get go. So we don't really know how Bran's powers work.
