In the Battletech and Mechwarrior universe, someone did calculations and figured out that mechs as drawn are actually less dense than water. My headcanon for ZEITGEIST is that Borne's made of adamantine that was magically alloyed with other metals, sort of like how adding a bit of carbon to iron makes steel. Without magic he'd collapse, but he's so suffused with magic he's impossible to dispel.

Define "good". For example, if I am having one PC face off agianst one NPC, anything particularly complicated, or that will take up a whole lot of time focusing on how many vodka shots one player makes while the others sit on their hands waiting for their compatriot to become staggeringly drunk would not be "good". We wouldn't want to make one person the focus of the action for an entire...

That's okay. Understanding may be achievable. Consider - fights are not the only thing in a D&D game. If a player (or group of players) is really interested in some aspect of the game other than fights, then maybe having the fights be deadly is not leading the players to their fun very well.

That is phenomenal to hear. I love that there were almost equal numbers of male and female interested - it really is a different world for RPGs these days, for the better. The DMing is likely to be your biggest problem, it always is -- more Marines than Master Chiefs. :)

I've been eyeing the Eberron guide for a while now, but the 20 bucks was just outside the range I was comfortable paying for an impulse buy (my chances of running Eberron in the next six months are very slim). In the same vein, I have been eyeing a number of the Artificer class takes to bundle with the Eberron stuff - All the ratings for them are pretty much the same, and I'm hard pressed to buy...

I often think it's too easy to get into the TARDIS. A TARDIS is supposed to be the most advanced type of ship in the universe, so teleporting onto it shouldn't be easy. I wonder if she gave Kerblam! permissions or something?

Um, pemerton? You don't get to say what the OP meant. Really, deciding that the OP should follow *your* use of the terms is a bit on-the-nose ironic in a thread largely *about questioning definitions*. Please, if his form does not seem coherent, rather than tell him he is wrong, ask questions probing where your differences lie, hm? I think you'll find it far more constructive.

I think it might be more clear to say, a prescriptivist thinks we have rules for language that we must follow. A descriptivist feels the rules describe the language as it currently is[, and that as use changes, the rules will change. There is a better view, IMHO. Right now, short term, if you want to be understood, you should follow the rules. Long term, it is empirically shown that...

Not necessarily, no. Specifically, there are games where you do not take on a role of one of the characters and all players have sway over all characters within the narrative. This would not be a role-playing game, but would be a story-telling game. You see, this is a problem with making definitions - you need to consider the *entire space* within which you are making your definition. ...

Great list! I agree with you on Forgetful and Spendthrift. You can use skills with any attribute as long as the GM agrees, so intimidation and Disfigured would be a good combo for a strong character. A STR (intimidation) check with the disfigured trait would be a good combo.

That being said... "the rules are descriptive" is insufficient as a definition. If nothing else, it fails to differentiate role-playing games from story-telling games, which I expect we would find are also descriptive. It probably also fails to differentiate from some forms of simulation games - like SimCity, where within a domain, you are largely allowed to do whatever you darn well feel like....

I think pointing out that there are some actions that are not allowed is missing the point. Yes, my character doesn't have the wings, spells, or magic items that allow them to fly, so they cannot fly. That doesn't make the game suddenly 100% prescriptive. I think the central point is still there - if you are playing chess, you have a list of allowed moves, and *everything else* is...

To me it comes down to presentation. If the party goes into an area that is known to be fraught with heinous, over the top peril, than I would expect no surprise when said peril occurs. But I would't throw such a threat if they were just doing a diplomatic mission for example, as the peril would feel more arbitrary to me at that point.

The key to the Solar is its 150 ft flying speed. Effectively unless you have a means of immobilizing it, it can kite indefinitely, or it can just teleport back 120 feet if necessary. So for an Empryean vs a Solar it comes down to Bolt vs Slaying Longbow. Overall, bolt has a +3 attack advantage (+2, and the Solar's AC is 1 lower) and gets to attack twice through the legendary action. Slaying...

I will disagree to a point here. Again, we are talking about a creature that is supposed to be extremely difficult, maybe nigh impossible for a party to defeat. This to me is the equivalent of a party asking for a god's personal password and wondering why the knowledge check DC is outside of their possible values. Further, an "impossible" roll does serve a few functions. One, it lets other...

As I said, watch surrogates. Also, if you don't want this stuff in your game, just disallow it. Come up with a reason. Pemberton has secret knowledge that they don't manage to replicate during the span of the campaign. Like, we figured out how to make nukes 70 years ago, but some folks still have a hard time doing it. It's okay if the PCs can't do everything.

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

Yeah, what got me thinking about it is, "what's the difference between, 'never understood what you are saying,' and 'never heard you say it in the first place?' " Recognition of the command sounds like it's key to the magic of the spell.

Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAW: Sounds like it wouldn't matter. They are affected by the Geas, they take the damage. RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Now now Taran, you started this tangent by noting frustration with DMs who ignore dodging and spells like sanctuary. Overlord is basically saying turnaround is fair play, that as much as DMs may use in game knowledge to make their monsters more tactical, players can do it too.

I don't know if this is in similar vein or not, but I used to play with a guy who for some reason, consciously or not, decided to "one-up" every PC I played by playing a PC with the same party role, but with lots of rules-tweaking to make the PC better. It was kind of obvious after a while: (1) I would create a PC, (2) he would get tired of the PC he was playing and retire them, and (3) a new PC...

Lets say a person was subjected to a GEAS, but then shortly after their memory was modified so they don't remember getting the GEAS effect. Would they have any knowledge or innate way to avoid the actions restricted by the GEAS, or would they just stumble into it and take the damage?

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

From the Android ENWorld app I've noticed that a bunch of obvious spam had made the "trending" and seem to remain despite being removed. Any way to fix this? Lets add a mention to , um, GOT IT! Umbran, or should I have contacted darjr? Sent from my Nexus 6 using EN World mobile app Probably. For tech stuff, you generally want darjr or Morrus. Ok, let's do that then: darjr or Morrus.? Can this be a problem?

Thanks. I'll probably check out N.E.W. as well. Are there published adventures for it? Unfortunately, I don't really have time to create my own at the moment. I rely on published adventures for now... Even if I had the time, I would want to have some experience with the world/rules/etc before attempting to create an adventure. I understand. I'm in the same boat. IDK the product releases for NEW, but there are links on the enworld drop down menu above, or on the homepage. Or maybe Morrus can chime in.

  • 01:22 AM - LordEntrails mentioned Morrus in post New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast
I said it before, I have meant no hostility, in what I have posted before and what I'm posting now. @Morrus, I also have no problems with books, I thought my exchange with @darjr around post #98 of this thread made that clear. @Staffan, I see no point in discussing theft as a legitimate business option. A consideration, yes, an option, no. @Charles Rampant, I'm not bent out of shape. I'm amused. As Myrddin points out, most of what you ask for is already available. As I pointed out earlier, I find it amusing that people continually make the same complaints yet refuse to acknowledge that options other than what they have envisioned are available. Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe your ideas of a companion app are something new and revolutionary, but what has been described in this thread fails to describe something new and revolutionary in my understanding. I find discussions on ENWorld interesting. One aspect of that is that people seem to assume hostility here rather than interest or critical consideration.

  • 10:54 PM - Parmandur mentioned Morrus in post Why Forums Should Be Ignored By Game Developers
And yet Green Ronin recently said they were going to shut down their forums due to it's atmosphere (much like Wotc), I think they have reconsidered since then. While I have seen a lot of good things at "1st party" type forums over the years, I have seen them cause a lot of grief for fans and companies. I think the main thing was that they couldn't justify any ROI when third parties lime Morrus who run for.s for a living can focus on it full time; way lower cost to have staff tweet than to run a forum.

  • 02:54 PM - pdzoch mentioned Morrus in post How did you find ENWorld?
While looking for a way to better manage the class powers in D&D 4e, I found through a google search this thread. Which got me started working in the Magic Set Editor. While the thread appears to be long dead, and D&D is not in the 5th edition, I still use the software and post updated material using on this forum. To answer Morrus' question, there was a long time between when I first came here and when I actually became active. The WOTC sites, being the official site for the products, was where I attempted to engage the community most. However, I simply did not find the site easy to negotiate or really very vibrant. I was disappointed to say the least. When their forum shut down, I did not think it was much of a loss. I looked at other sites to participate it -- RPGGeek really hadn't taken off yet (it is still a fledgling companion to the boardgamegeek) and I found D&DReddit simply too hostile to waste my time with.

I'm not sure if Google knows my age...at least, I don't remember telling it. Ditto male/female etc.; though this computer is regiestered to my name etc. nobody including Google knows who is actually using it at any given moment. • 04:50 AM - Reynard mentioned Morrus in post N.E.W. I took the plunge. Now What?
... best use their exploits. But I like the WEG Star Wars/d20 marriage vibe the system gives and will certainly play it more and see how it serves. Sometimes it is hard to try new games when you play them in a different game mode and I think since the players were a subset of my weekly FG D&D 5E group we sort of thought of it as 5E by default. On a personal note, it was really cool to run a game in my novel setting. Just yesterday I finished final edits (I hired an editor and finished going through his edits, I mean) so I have been deeply immersed in it for some time. I set the game a generation after the novel (and potential sequels) so it was fun to imagine the results of my main characters actions. I intend to keep this thread alive as I tinker with the system for this setting. In a perfect world, if I had the time and do end up thinking WOIN is a good fit, I would take advantage of the OGL nature of WOIN and put out a setting or standalone to augment the novels. Good stuff, Morrus. * In case any of the players meander over here by chance, I will spoiler block it: There was a side encounter with some bandits and their "warlock" master -- a person who has been contacted by a daemon via some aether device and given secrets in return for service. It turns out, the daemon circling the Robot Ruin is that same daemon. It has managed to use internal systems of the mecha to drive the mad Maker into a frenzy of repair using ancient tech stolen by the warlock's bandits. If the mad Maker can get the Robot Ruin fixed, the daemon will enter the mecha (much as the Bottled Daemon PC entered the industrial robot) and have a 300 foot tall war machine at its disposal.

That happened months ago. It's gratifying that haven't noticed it until today. For what it's worth, I noticed it at the time it changed, and it's definitely irritating, but not to the point that I'd come here to complain about it, especially if it helps pages load significantly faster. I'll add my discontent to the thread/name/level/badges changes, however. The rest I could probably get used to... losing the badges stings a little

Its how we always do our Kickstarters. Itís designed to ensure nobody has to wait months for their rewards; itís guaranteed and risk free. In other words, we take the risk on ourselves and shell out for development rather than passing it on to the customer, as in a regular Kickstarter, and just fund the print runs. In this case, ďfinishedĒ means the books are done, and we have our proof copies, but the KS will pay for the print run to get them out to you. When the KS ends, we order the print run an ship right away. No waiting! No chance of non-fulfilment. Cheers Morrus, that makes sense.

  • 09:51 PM - Deset Gled quoted Morrus in post Forum Suddenly Switched How Named Are Displayed?
It is a demonstrable point in the UX field that initial negative feedback is not as helpful as you might think. In the short term, humans typically react negatively to change they don't themselves initiate. The real question will be how folks feel about it in a few weeks or so, after the shock of unannounced change wears off. That happened months ago. It's gratifying that haven't noticed it until today. I'm having trouble reconciling these two posts. It would seem that we are supposed to wait a few weeks before posting any complaints to make sure they are legitimate and not just a hostile reaction to change, but also that if we wait to long to say we don't like something it is disregarded as not being important because it wasn't brought up soon enough.

  • 05:16 PM - Sadras quoted Morrus in post Gail Gygax Sued By Movie Producer
Seven years is far too short for most IP. Had the rule been 7 years, the Hobbit would have been in the public domain before Tolkien would have been able to finish and publish Lord of the Rings. Life of author + some modest amount should be fine. The current state of affairs is ridiculous, but 7 years would also be ridiculous. Indeed. You canít even make a film trilogy in that time. A trilogy is nothing compared to the writing of the Winds of Winter. If that 7 year rule had been in effect, a fan-made copy would have hit the shelves by 12 July 2018. #Truestory.

Worry when you don't see the folks returning after 14. :) Personally, this site is great and the products are really sound. Very, very few RPG sites last past 2 years let alone 20. KB

There's a (beta) character builder online: http://www.enworld.org/morrusdev/character.php (I wrote it myself to learn PHP, so it might not be perfect -- it doesn't apply exploits, for example, but it does list them for you). This seems to be using a different rules-set? Not only are the attributes and skills off, but it's lacking certain exploits and options, and has unusual notes like Androids selecting two modification choices and so on that aren't reflected in the 1.2 version of the book.

Youíve understood it correctly! The number he needs to hit is the target creatureís RANGED DEFENCE score. Ah, that does start to slot things in place. I hadn't realised the Ranged Defence score gave the score to be made. I shall leave you alone for a while and do some more reading. I do appreciate your help and, as a game designer (miniatures wargaming) I also appreciate the effort you have put into WOIN.

Spending a dice means removing it from your dice pool. For example, if you are rolling 6d6 and you want to spend 2d6 on extra damage, you roll 4d6 instead. That fits with what I thought - I have provided some additional info in a new post that may throw some more light on things. If you can find the time to respond to that, I think I shall be able to make progress. Thanks for the help.
  • 10:41 AM - CapnZapp quoted Morrus in post Cubicle 7 forums to close due to EU data law
I ensured we were OK for GDPR months ago. For a message board like this, it's not a very onerous task. We collect almost zero user data here (username, email, IP, basically) and it isn't shared anywhere. And yep, the functionality to delete an account is present if it becomes needed. We're good. If I understand it correctly, the issue isn't compliance. It is risk of litigation. Strike to Stun (the WFRP forums) is (also) shutting down (in part) because of GDPR. The reason given is that it's just not worth the risk of someone suing. Whether the site is compliant or not isn't the issue. The issue is that GDPR opens up an avenue of blackmail through the legal system, in that no hobby-run forum can afford a legal process and would be forced into giving in to whatever demands are met (most likely shutting the site anyway). This obviously applies primarily to EU-based sites (Server Goddess runs StS from Austria). Hobby sites run from the U.S., for instance can probably just shrug at any ...
