3/4 level sounds fine. The thing is itís such a situational spell. In players hands itís not that great. Even against a bbeg I donít think this would be my go to spell. Against players itís scary strong. Exhaustion is actually very hard to get rid of. Throw this spell out in the first encounter of the day, and you could do more to hinder that player than most anything else you can do...

Pretty good episode tonight. It was a pretty good take on the Enemy Mine plot. The Space Orcs were an interesting element too. And the B plot with Gordon was handled well too, I'd say maybe even better than Trek usually does.

Using the standard array and the "default" equipment given for each class and background, you can make a 5e level 1 character in approximately 10 minutes. I can't think of getting any faster while still maintaining a sense of meaningful choice about your character. For some, the existing character options, even including multiclassing and feats, are still too small. Personally, I'd really love to...

We have had informal agreements aplenty over the years. I'm currently running an Ashen Stars game, in which there are technically formal contract relationships involved as being members of a LASER crew. We most definitely do *not* write it out in full, as it is more like a modern legal document, with scads of sub-clauses. The party's business expert has, on more than one occasion, used his...

I wasn't the one who said, "the ultimate point of character creation isnít about character custimization but instead itís about having a character you can play in game." If it is just about having "a character," then why not just do it over and over again? Make an absolute statement, and reap the rewards of pure logic. Leave yourself some wiggle room, and you can avoid such traps.

Rolling in order only creates viable characters in a statistical sense. So, while decision points are slow, in the long run it probably beats having to roll in order several times before a character is generated that doesn't die when an orc sneezes on it. It is a question of whether you front-load your time expenditure or not. I prefer to do the job right once, rather than do quick...

The aesthetics, the sounds, the styles, Palpatine and Vader, stormtroopers, Star Destroyers, the architecture, even the mouse droids, the whole package ... itís just *got* something that the bad guys in other eras lack. Fair, though as I recall, previous versions of the 5e SRD had more limited content, more akin to what's in Basic. I glanced at the license, but I didn't probe into the content yesterday. If you wanna be really picky, WotC uses version 1.0a, released in 2000. I was not confident enough that *NO OTHER* versions existed out there to assert such.

Classically - illusions are what he does. Well, again classically, there's a group of extradimensional villains from the comics called the Elementals. We have the basic question of whether they are actually here, or if they are something Mysterio cooked up for him to be a hero fighting. I don't expect other cameos of note, as they won't want to reveal who survives Avengers:...

If you want an example of a world without an open gaming license, look back historically to TSR (owner of D&D prior to Wizards of the Coast) and their positions on D&D compatible content in the early and mid-1990s -- it was an environment where they insisted that anything that included even terminology now common in the genre (such as phrases like "hit points" or "armor class") became property of...

The OGL isn't the "3E" OGL or the "5E" OGL. There's just the OGL. And it hasn't been dumped, because it's non-rescindable. Both 3E and 5E have had some (but not all) of their content released under it, as have many other games. One of the main purposes of the OGL, as Ryan Dancey - its architect - said: it means that D&D is here to stay. Nothing can make it go away, not even the whims of a...

*Basic* 5e was released under the OGL, which to a quick scan doesn't appear particularly different from past OGLs. Rather than changing the control by changing the OGL, they did so by limiting content in the SRD - the basic mechanics are all there, but many of the classes are missing. So, anyone can write to the system, and even do something interesting with large changes (like Mutants and...

Hold on a second. Let us be clear - with a finite, comprehensible ruleset, there *will* be some options that are better than others. Full stop. Those that like doing deep dives into rules options *will* find them. No game designer can avoid this. It follows, then, that the game can't/shouldn't be designed around preserving all the concepts for optimizers, as it is not a tractable task. ...

I'm going to guess that a simple photographs of what already exists, a scene that could be seen by someone walking by, is *not* going to be considered transformative. After all, the architect and the artist probably were considering the setting, so the "juxtaposition" is their thought before it is the photographer's. You can do the analysis considering two travelers - one who passes by Earth at 0.8 C on their way to Alpha Centauri, the other passing by Earth at the same moment going 0.9c for the same trip. Let try an example to ensure we are all reading the table right. So lets assume you need a 5 or better to hit, and do an average of 10 dmg before the feat is applied. So the formula is 5.5 - .25X. So that 5.5 - .25 * 10 = 5.5 - 2.5 = 3. So this means that my average damage increases by 3. Now where I'm confused is when you defined average damage. Wrath of Khan and the Voyage Home, however, were probably the best movies, for me. I kind of like them all, but the Dominion War had some great stuff in it. And the last season of Enterprise, when they handed things over to Manny...

I can't say I've ever seen a player use an action surge outside of combat, either, but Mistwell's example of getting one last try to catch someone from falling would be a compelling instance. It's just that for anyone who has action surge, it's not often remembered in out of combat situations - it's like a bard starting with regaining bardic inspiration on a long rest, and then four levels later...

Robert Picardo and John Billingsley as guest stars in the same episode? Sure, why not! Pretty good episode too, particularly the dream sequence and the gift.

Here's a slightly larger one, with fewer labels (since the Consulate and Alchemy Row only really matter in adventure 2).

  • 07:26 PM - darjr mentioned Morrus in post WOTC teasing planescape.com
There is a WotC wpn streaming event that day. Presumably for magic. But I've seen others say to tune in for dnd. Also WotC is changing the wpn, so much so that they've warned stores to read the new agreement and sign on board or chance losing wpn status, could be magic related but DnD peeps warned folks working with stores to go take a look. • 06:27 PM - Farrem mentioned Morrus in post Brazilian D&D Translators Fall Out Over Translation Rights
@kenmarable, you got the general idea. @Morrus it's not a cancelation at will, in brazilian law you can cancel a contrat if one of the parts is misrepresenting themselves (an that is the case, all the plans and all the documents that Fire on Board presented to get the contract included assets from all the other companies). Seriously look at the medium article: More damning yet is an English-language document in which the four FMR members make a joint presentation of their credentials for the licence. ďWe present to HasbroĖWizards of the Coast the Companies that will be involved in the licensing partnership,Ē it reads." (https://medium.com/@t.mcgrenery/why-brazilians-are-boycotting-dungeons-dragons-3fa37ce4d8a3#.6wi85o6fb) And right after this they just tell that the other companies withdrawn? The problem if WotC or GF9 do not intervene is that this is going to court, the judge will stop any publishing until the judgement (and that alone may take years, maybe 2 to 5 years). Not only this, but the judge will probably bring GF9...

  • 04:51 PM - Lylandra mentioned Morrus in post A War of the Burning Sky Wiki
Hey you all, I've recently had a short conversation with @Morrus about the possibility of creating an easily visible resource page/thread/whateverfor additional content for both WotBS and Zeitgeist where we all could collect information old and new that has accumulated in these forums over the years. Morrus' suggestion was to create a wiki page for each AP where every registered user could update and add stuff (plus anyone could then remove dead links). So, I've taken some time and started the War of the Burning Sky Resource Collection in the wiki area. As you can see, the page is far from finished, so I'd invite all of you who are interested in WotBS and/or have something to share that you've either created yourself or found in the forums and deem useful to visit the wiki page and contribute! As a side note: I know at least one person who would be more than happy to have a corresponding reource collection for Zeitgeist. However, I am a player in our Zeitgeist campaign and don't want to spoiler myself by digging for resource material as we're cur...

Supposedly one can buy "badges" here with them. Hit the FAQ in the menu atop any page. If Morrus creates a "Gold Coin" badge, I hereby pledge I will buy more Gold Coins.
  • 04:16 AM - Rolenet mentioned Morrus in post Yet another Solos fix: "Solo actions"
GURPS and d20 are both core systems You'd think. GURPS d20 is a detailed simulation of Forum Wars pertaining to the d20 Modern and Star Wars d20, as well as the unpublished Vampire d20 and FATE d20. You can play any of several archetypes such as The Clicktroll; the SJG Fanboy, and customize them with Advantages. Included is a conversion table to use 3d6 as a d20. ...nope, I lied, for some reason I have 11 of them. Weird. See? See? Here's my theory. Morrus is actually a collective of South-Asian barely-paid workers that are producing a new kind of virtual currency in shady underground factories. Just check it out; he, sorry they, have five thousand units. FIVE THOUSAND. You can paypal him for more. But you can't cash out. See? They're.. they're mining gold! Virtual fantasy gold! Laugh Morrus! But I have seen through your scheme! You can have my XP, but you won't get my Gold Pieces!
  • 03:47 AM - Rolenet mentioned Morrus in post Yet another Solos fix: "Solo actions"
No idea about 'Coins' So you see, I don't know, Tony Vargas's been there for 14 1/2 years. He posted 9,316 times. He could have written Games of Thrones AND the unpublished GURPS d20 in that span. There barely was any Internet back in 2002 in Edenvale (this is right near the river Cionthar, Western Heartlands). ENWorld ran on Gopher. But still, he doesn't know about Gold Coins. That tells us something about this feature. But seriously, does someone knows what they're for? SUMMON Morrus?
  • 12:27 AM - Rolenet mentioned Morrus in post D&D Pronunciation Guide
Morrus, you might have exercised your English in RPG books when you were young. I *learned* English that way. Actually, reading the Car Wars Vehicule Guide 1. So by the time I was twelve, I had an unequaled command of vocabulary pertaining to cars parts, electric engines, and vehicular weaponry. But little grammar. My teachers weren't impressed. However it did help few years later when I passed an oral exam which involved describing a figure. It was a native trapper. I could pull out terms such as "top hat", "fur vest", "leather belt", "musket", "powder horn"... thanks to RPG gear lists... I remember we really botched English D&D terms pronunciation with our French accent. We rolled "funballs" on 1s, played in the "Forgotten Releems", and don't get me started on getting percentile "strengt", "strengf", or "strenx".

  • 03:49 PM - Imaro mentioned Morrus in post 5e Warlord Demand Poll
Morrus said nothing of other classes except for rangers. And I seem to recall that part of the reason for the creation of the sub-forum was not just a matter of their number but also as a way to contain the vitriol of the discussion surrounding the Warlord. People don't have to defend the ranger's right to exist as a class. So are we going to go down the list of every class? Seriously? I think if there was a class that rivaled the warlord in thread count he would have mentioned it... The fact that the number of threads for warlords could at one point fill its own subforum speaks volumes but ok, here we go again... Hey @Morrus do you have any insight into whether the psionic class threads have been as prolific as the warlord threads before Mystics were announced? Also, I'm sure a new class for comparison will arise once we get the answer for psionics...

  • 08:52 PM - dragoner quoted Morrus in post Adventures with extensive backstory
Anybody else have this problem, or is it just me? Ye olde info dump; you are inline with about 90% of the players in my games, I usually give about 3 paragraphs at most, usually far less, and if for those that like info, a separate pdf (last was 5 pages on sea life and one of the players still thought it wasn't enough :heh: ). I figure 2-3 sentences is ideal, and if ongoing, I parse it out into relevant bits during descriptions in play. This doesn't include poorly written exposition, some people need a lesson on being concise. Giving relevant, useful data is a keystone for the story arc, or whatever.
  • 03:48 PM - Mustrum_Ridcully quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
One thing I found quite compelling was the unpleasant realisation that the Doctor and Graham needed to *be* the white people taking up the space so the driver had to tell Parks to move. You could see they so wanted to help, but knew they couldn't. It was important that they didn't make to that the Doctor inspired Parks, or caused the events, or anything like that. It was a strong choice to have nobody even really notice the Doctor, and for none of the primary characters agency to be altered or reduced. They all made the choices and did the things they did on their own initiative, and the Doctor had nothing to do that. Instead, she was busy dealing with a time traveller and ensuring he didn't stop it, while staying out of the way. It would have been kinda funny if they didn't realize what was up, and the Doctor would just give up her spot for Rosa Parks, only to realize she just has screwed up the timeline and has to fix things.
  • 07:29 AM - Tonguez quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
I'm really impressed by the episode, most Doctor History episodes are iconoclasmic romps but this one managed to be respectful and well researched (even including her NAACP Youth Council links). The cast were good, they managed to give the subject of racism gravitas while also working in a couple of jokes, a bit of social commentary and a closing tribute. Well done One question about the bad guy ó why didnít he just send Rosa Parks back in time? He couldnít harm her, but he could send people back in time. Seems a much easier way to accomplish his aims. I'm assuming its the same logic that makes the Weeping Angels bad - they don't actually kill you, they just "take your life away", I can accept the inhibitor accounting for that too

I can just see it. Rosa Parks arrives to the moment the very first slave ship arrives to America, and somehow ends up ending slavery on the continent before it even begins. :p

  • 11:11 PM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
I felt it was let down a little by the villain himself, who just felt a bit like a placeholder, but the primary cast was excellent. Doctor Who Where a white supremacist trying to derail the civil rights movement isn't "evil" enough. ;)
  • 08:53 PM - MarkB quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
It was very good, with some excellent performances. I felt it was let down a little by the villain himself, who just felt a bit like a placeholder, but the primary cast was excellent. It felt like it needed some kind of epilogue to it, showing where/when he ended up, hopefully in some form of ironic-justice context. The fact that we didn't get one suggests that we may see him again.
  • 05:10 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post New Ravnica Race and Guild Details Revealed
Yup. Me. I've never played M:tG, or even really seen it, but as a new setting for D&D this looks like fun. Yeah, same here, though I've played a few hands of Magic in my time. I've really enjoyed what WotC has been offering for the past few years, but this is easily the most bold and interesting looking product they've put out in a looking time.

  • 05:43 PM - Brian I quoted Morrus in post Looking for NEW players
I mean, people are busy. If they showed interest, they may be able to play at a later date or whatever. They probably wonít now! :) I'd normally agree, for usual type campaigns. With a West Marches style game, the sense is after a month of not commenting, they weren't going to play. It was a bit odd, but it was well announced, and the minimum bar was pretty low for a Player: register at the campaign website and/or the discord server. There's folks who have done so, but aren't ready or able to play now. Folks were given advance notice, and invited to come back. It's been a very interesting (and fun) process regardless. I'm viewing it as learning experience, so how to better advertise, on-board, incentivize, etc. is all part of the deal. I totally appreciate knikpiw and the other members providing organizational help and such as well.

  • 04:43 PM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post Adventures with extensive backstory
I"m reading one now. It's only 4 pages of backstory, but it is *dense* with names and places and history. It very much feels like I'm doing schoolwork! Especially since it's 4 page of backstory and then about 16 pages of adventure. It feels like a history book. Reached a sentence with 4 different place names and two different character names in it. I keep re-reading it in the hope I can parse it! That's the Twitter/Internet effect. It's a sign that you should buy more newspapers.
  • 11:51 AM - CapnZapp quoted Morrus in post DnD Sports Changes Name To RPG Sports
Was there something youíd like to say? We told you WotC was not running it. Whats so funny. I don't get it. Read it as nervous laughter and it makes more sense. In the prior announcement he has multiple posts essentially stating that 'of course WotC is involved' and probably being a little to forceful going after those with dissenting opinions. Foot, meet mouth. I will only talk for myself. I don't excuse anyone's impoliteness but I find his reaction quite natural and easy to understand. To me it's incredibly naive to use a brand name unlicensed, and one that is wholly unsuited to the intended purpose at that. Having to make such a sudden course correction begs the question: what where they thinking? But again, maybe that's just me.
  • 10:35 AM - Aldarc quoted Morrus in post What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?
