You could try making the actual ship battle a narrative background element while the PCs themselves do something important in the battle. Maybe they have to board the enemy ship and get something while the cannonballs rain down and enemy sailors battle them in the lower decks.

I will generally just miss a show entirely, rather than commit piracy. Yeah. It then starts getting to having to pay close attention to each service and ask whether you're really getting enough content from them to justify the expense. CBS All Access is a fine example. I haven't watched any of Discovery, because it is not worth it to me to pay for a single show that gets mixed reviews.

Netflix and Hulu carrying other people's content made sense when streaming services were new, and the content creators didn't want to be in the business of streaming. Magic in WOIN is much more low-magic than the super-high magic of D&D. If you wanted to replicate D&D's magical prevalence and availability, you'd need to reduce the MP cost of magic in general across the board.

If you are a troll, or otherwise not in the dialogue in good faith, we don't need to tolerate your position. Yes, you are closer to death, but you are starting to pull out the stops, and capable of greater feats. I find a good example in FATE based games, in which you can take Consequences instead of taking stress boxes. The stress boxes can take you out of the game, the consequences make doing...

The acid blood isn't meant to be a strong combat ability. If an ogre was dealing significant amounts of damage to foes every time it was hit, it would be very overpowered. It'll hurt maybe a peasant, but not a hero. Mooks are vulnerable to such things as they die with one hit.

There's an interesting bit of human psychology. If you have a resource, and are unlikely to get more of it, you hoard that resource. You never use it, because if you do, then you won't have it at that critical time. But then since you aren't in the habit of using it... you forget about it, and don't use it when you really should. So, you wind up with a chicken and egg thing - if the GM...

Printed, probably about 100 - I have periodically purged over the years, donating to good friends especially for books I haven't cracked open in 5 years or more. Digitally, I literally have thousands and thousands -- collective worth however is quite different because a lot of them I've picked up on Humble Bundles, Bundles of Holding, charity sales, etc. and I might have thousands of books which...

This pretty much fits me as well. In my case, it's about 75%/25% first person/third person, I prefer first person, but there are times where either I'm at a loss for specific words (I suck at seducing NPCs, I got no game ;)) or intent needs to be clearer.

It rose from the depths of a dozen years and more.... I switch back and forth, and it depends on context. In live-action play, it is mostly 1st person. At a tabletop, I try for mostly 1st person in in depicting the character's speech, and a mix when depicting action. Often enough there's a need to differentiate between the Character and the player, and then it is 3rd person - GM: "Are you...

And, surprising nobody, The Punisher and Jessica Jones are also now both cancelled. To clarify - Jessica Jones is ending after its third season airs. Which is nice. I dunno if they have a chance to somehow put a bow on the end of it.

So far, I've seen an ancestral guardian Barbarian, a Swashbuckler Rogue, A Hex blade warlock, and a Divine Soul Sorcerer. Of all of these, the Divine Soul was the most lackluster - but I think this has as much to do with the Sorcerer being slightly too short on spells known as anything. All subclasses I've seen so far live up to the other choices in the PH, and I haven't seen any that are just...

  • 03:33 PM - Sadras mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
Yet, I find it interesting that my fairly benign statements showing that I don't automatically trust every self-proclaimed good dude are getting more heat than some of the deeply unsettling things several posters have been saying in the past 15 pages I've been participating on this thread. That is a curious statement. The last 15 pages have been relatively mild compared to what had been posted before where Morrus got involved several times. As for you getting heat more than the trolls, citation needed. I'm not seeing any evidence of what you're claiming, especially given the XP count which equates to support. If you really think that an exaggerated demonstration of the daily precautions I have to take to avoid harassment and assault is unfairly blaming poor, innocent men who are just trying to have a discussion, you haven't been paying attention to what several women and men have been saying on this thread, and you are not on my side (whatever being on my side supposedly means), and it all of it sustains and supports the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in environments where people are supposed to be safe. So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? Furthermore why doe...

Wait, now people are claiming it's not even SPF who posted in this thread? The man has a Facebook account, among other internet footprints, and he's posted some of the exact same things there, as well as actually discussing his participation in this thread. ...o started the thread then replied "You need to read up on the concept of "plus" threads if you think I want an echo chamber, or if you don't see the very valid reasons why the site supports such threads. If you want to keep discussing this that's fine, but I will need to ask you to start a new thread to do it." A second user said they doubted the premise of the thread was possible, and was told again "This is a plus thread. If you want to argue against the premise of the thread, start a new one." When questioned on that, the poster then said, "Questioning the point of the thread is exactly what you don't get to do in a plus thread." Can a user now declare a thread they start to be designated a "plus" thread and therefore police their thread for anyone who questions a premise of the topic? Are we now supposed to always start a new thread if we question the premise of a designated "plus" thread? It's possible I missed that new rule. I asked elsewhere and someone mentioned Morrus had discussed the possibility of such a thing but it had never been enacted as a rule as far as they knew. So, is this a thing now?

  • 05:34 AM - Ancalagon mentioned Morrus in post Most popular class/race combos
Two comments: 1: I note that the "spread" of classes is much less dramatic than the race spread. The most popular class is a bit more than twice as popular as the least popular class. That's a good thing IMO! Race wise however, the spread is what, 12-13 fold? That's huge. Even is we exclude the non PHB races, the spread remains about 5-fold. I have to say that ... I'm ok with that. I would be far more concerned if the situation was reversed 2: Morrus : this is very cool info, but I'm curious why you are re-posting it?
  • 01:54 AM - Yaarel mentioned Morrus in post Most popular class/race combos
@Morrus Did the top 10 list accidentally leave out the Elf Wizard? The chart says there are 2744 Elf Wizards and 2568 Human Wizards. This means, the Elf Wizard is a more popular combo than the Human Wizard.

  • 06:17 PM - CapnZapp mentioned Morrus in post I gotta ask: the "laugh" points, are they meant as appreciation or as mockery??
Morrus: this issue doesn't go away. I'm going to report a series of my own posts where a user clicks laugh (yes, I know the button is called "laugh with this post") even though my remarks are not in any sense made with humor in mind. In short, I find it impossible to interpret this as anything else than mockery. I am writing this post because I know you are busy and might have a mod handle the reporting, so you might not even see the series of reported posts. (I need to post this first so I can include a link in my reports for your moderation convenience) If you or your mods redtext the user to stop abusing the laugh functionality all is well in the world. But I am ressurrecting this thread to clearly flag that it is not a new issue, and it remains a serious one. I've gotten dozens of laugh points I could have done well without, and I feel that if I do not bring thus back up to your attention it will never stop. I can't be alone in getting these points that only burn. If y...

  • 08:06 AM - Ancalagon mentioned Morrus in post Let's Look At Alchemy In Pathfinder 2!
There was apparently a podcast that divulged more information (I don't have a link at the moment) - Alchemical items have "levels" from 1 to 20 - Bombs were supposed to require two hands to use, but that's being changed to one hand Also from the comments, PF2 will NOT use item weight, but a "bulk" system similar to Star finder. Another comment is that alchemists can get more resonance, which is rather important because they need it to use magical items AND wield alchemy. The start of day items, as you guys have guessed, are subsidized for a better rate if you can predict ahead of time which items you will need and make duplicates. Plus, the alchemist gets a class feature that adds extra resonance and scales, Intel for you Morrus ! :)

  • 05:20 PM - Sacrosanct quoted Morrus in post Guns in D&D - A Hot Take
A question. Would you simply ignore pistol vs rifle when determining damage? Because, despite usually being smaller caliber, rifle rounds are typically far more damaging than pistol rounds simply due to muzzle velocity. Your earlier picture shows that. A 9 mm pistol round scratches the paint while your 5.56 mm rifle round punches straight through. I would. For a few reasons: 1. Velocity does impacts wound channel, but mostly penetration and range. You could take less tissue damage from a high velocity round that went right through you, then you would from a lower velocity round that mushroomed and stayed inside you. In fact, that's why they created rounds that are designed to tumble in the first place, and why organizations like the FBI demand the rounds they use penetrate only a certain distance. For maximum stopping effect. 2. Because of so many factors, then you go down that dangerous path I mentioned earlier, about getting too complicated and bogging the game down. Th...

  • 06:52 PM - matthewdcorley quoted Morrus in post Financials of my Kickstarter laid out for all to see.
Well, that's the beauty of Kickstarter. Takes the risk away. You know exactly how many you need to print. Very true, except for the pledge levels that have to be set before launch. Unless I'm forgetting something? You could always add them I suppose. A break-even analysis could do it but once you start to try to account for your time, variable shipping costs, packaging, and potentially losing customers due to shipping limitations it gets very complex. It can, and for larger projects absolutely should, be done but for a one man show with a few hundred backers you may not be putting yourself in the best position to be successful.
  • 06:23 PM - matthewdcorley quoted Morrus in post Financials of my Kickstarter laid out for all to see.
You're exchanging one evil for another, of course. A standard print run, plus shipping, will cost you far less than a PoD book, and the more you print, the more noticeable that becomes. But yes, it does make things much easier. With the Judge Dredd Kickstarter, a standard print run, warehousing, and shipping is a no-brainer. Doing all that by PoD would treble the costs, even with all that. Agree 100%. Volume solves a lot or problems, and creates a few too. Notably the one above. I'm completely guessing here but I would think that if you're not confident you're going to get at least 300 orders POD makes sense from a risk and timeliness standpoint. That's probably math I'll have to do at some point :)
  • 05:43 PM - lowkey13 quoted Morrus in post Yet another Ghostbusters movie
There's no definition of a "classic" movie. Are E.T. or Jaws classic movies? To me, they are. I'm sure some think they're popular tripe. Roger Ebert considers them classics[.] In fairness, I don't think those are good examples. Both Jaws and E.T. would be on almost any reasonable list of great movies (depending on the cut off and number) and there isn't much question about the acting, plot, pacing, or visual vocabulary employed in those movies. In fact, E.T. especially is so influential from a visual perspective that it continues to be referenced to this day. I mean, it's not like Spielberg is some random, Alan Smithee-level replacement director. He's not exactly a Ron Howard-type you bring in. Or, um, Ivan Reitman.* I think it's clear that it's a subjective question. Ghostbusters? Sure. To me, it's a classic 80s movie. But then so is Top Gun ferchrissake! It's perfectly fine. Cromulent. If someone wanted to talk about 80s movies, it would definitely be one of them! But, and I mean t...
  • 04:31 PM - Sacrosanct quoted Morrus in post 3rd party publishers and 5E
What an odd conversation! Eberron is a first party D&D product, published by WotC. WotC, like most game publishers, uses freelancers extensively. This does not make their products third or “second” party. The publisher is WotC. I don't think anyone is disagreeing that Eberron is, and has been for a long time, 1st party. I think the point is getting lost. The reason I brought it up in the first place was in the context of people who refuse to look at 3PP because they assume fan creation is automatically of poor quality or so much of it is garbage they can't find any good stuff and can't trust any reviews. And in that context, Eberron (a beloved setting by many if not by me) was a fan creation outside of WotC, and thus that attitude is flawed. That was the point I was getting at, and with the way internet discussions go, it delved into pedantic back and forth when the point got lost. And outside of Eberron, I think we can all agree that 3PP have put out some really great stuff, just a...

After a $2M Kickstarter, you're not small - that makes MCDM one of the biggest RPG publishers in the world (behind the obvious WotC/Paizo/FFGs). It's an awesome achievement. I think his success also shows the demand out there for high quality 3PP 5E content.
  • 04:41 AM - Steven Barker quoted Morrus in post Stunning weapons in WOIN
There’s no obligation in my mind for all weapons to be equal. Some things are better than other things. The electro arc, for example, is supposed to be pretty primitive compared to the a phaser; it’s basically an antique - a taser. It’s AL 6; a phaser is AL 9. A phaser is deliberately much better than it. I don't really mind the phaser being good. I didn't actually suggest any changes for the phaser either, as it seems to be in a fairly good place. My main problem is with how the electrical stun weapons compare to the other low-tech options. When it comes to stunning biological targets, an AL 2 sap is better than an AL 6 stun baton in every way. And an AL 5 slugger pistol with rubber bullets (not sure what AL these are, but probably 5-6, since they exist today) is much better than the AL 6 electro-arc. The only thing that the stun baton and electro-arc do better is deal damage to androids and biological characters wearing battlesuits. But even then, buying a few magazines of AP ammo ...

  • 08:15 PM - Steven Barker quoted Morrus in post WOIN XP and advancement when grades are not the same across the party
If you base it off an average party grade (which is fine, if you prefer that), then people aren't getting the same effective gain each time. Some are getting more than a tenth of their next grade, some are getting less than a tenth. Yeah, that is exactly what I was suggesting. By slightly boosting those who have fallen behind (or slightly holding back the folks who are ahead), the party will tend to converge on the same grade, as a constant difference in XP will shrink relative to the amount needed for a new grade. I think that a group that is mostly the same grade will be more cohesive, as everyone can contribute to a similar degree. If some characters are way ahead of others (e.g. always a full grade ahead, or seven tenths of a grade or whatever), the ones in the lead may do most of what needs to be done, not just because their players are the most dynamic or creative, but because their characters are also the most capable. This is most notable at low grades, where each step from grade 3 ...

I prefer it when they lay off the jokes and just pretend to be Star Trek. When it gets into the fart jokes and the like it takes me out of it. For me that's the biggest reason I'm enjoying the show. The show seems to me t be a light parody of Star Trek mixed with some serious themes and issues. There are enough serious sci-fi shows out there that the jokes and humor put the Orville into a new and refreshing category for me.
