Under most circumstances I'd agree, but since we're talking about a random encounter that (if I remember the Martek portion correctly) just pops out of the ground/glass and starts snacking, it should probably be modded in some fashion to avoid a no-win kill-a-character-or-three moment. Now, if it's modded as a "cutscene instance" like Quartz describes, where only major stupidity would get them...

Ah. Not all random encounters are intended for you to fight and win. Sometimes, you randomly encounter things that you are supposed to then avoid at all costs.

Jimmifett, it would be nice if you posted about something else sometimes, but since as far as I can make out the only reason you post in this community is to decry any hint of inclusiveness, it's time for you to leave.

Plus, multiple tabs (one open to each section you are flipping between) or "previous view", or "split window view." Not to denigrate good old reliable paper (try playing D&D in a power outage with a tablet at 20% power and no battery!) but there are plenty of flippin' tools. (term used non-ironically :))

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

Is the Purple Worm in this an important encounter plot-wise, or is it a random encounter? I love Desert of Desolation, but I can't remember specifically right now. If it's a random encounter, I might skip it or substitute a smaller version (maybe a 'baby' purple worm or variant species with a -2 to attacks, about 1 dice less damage, (about 3 dice less for the poison tail) and about 125 hp or so?...

There's a creature in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes called the Venom Troll that is a CR7 critter that can be DEVASTATING to even higher-level parties if a particular party is very melee-heavy and not ranged-attack-heavy. Every time the thing is hit with damage, acidic pustules pop and damage all creatures within 5 feet of it with poison damage. A party in melee with it is potentially damaging...

I'm running Ashen Stars on a regular basis... The game is pretty specifically designed to play out rather like an Episode of Star Trek - if you know what a "procedural" TV show is, Trek is kind of a sci-fi procedural, and the system models that well. The starship combat is pretty ingenious, and it has the focus of combat just where an episode of the series would have it. What you are...

I would love to have the organization infiltrate some of the police force but I would assume such a place would do routine screenings to ensure their people don't have magical compulsions or curses. For the next two weeks you may put your promotional/publisher posts in the relevant game forum. Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Folks need to read up on biology a bit before going into such things. You folks are making this way too complicated, and you are trying too hard to bind an alien species that only superficially looks human to human mechanisms and structures. I mean, think for a second, if a male can bring a baby to term, it quite obviously doesn't mean the same thing as "male" does in humans. Even on Earth,...

I'd agree with everybody else that I'd play the game before trying to adjust it. You can very rarely get a good feel for a game until you've played it.

Because it occurs to me, as an ironically curious consequence of that, that if WotC’s goal was hypothetically to sell books to you specifically, opening the DMsG has therefore lost them sales rather than gained them.

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

  • 01:47 AM - thorgrit mentioned Morrus in post Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!
I'm interested, but cautiously optimistic. For my own purposes, I looked forward to Starfinder but it turned out to be too complicated for me to figure out character creation just reading the book. I remember when they came out with Unchained, and I was wondering if they'd use that to springboard off a new revised PF.5 or something, bundling the idea of traits and backgrounds and things all in together on a new core rulebook. Can do nothing but wait and see. I'm super pessimistic about any conversion guidelines that promise more than "just remake characters from the ground up" and "you can use old published adventures but ignore all the stats and use the new stats instead". Morrus: the link "Paizo has just announced" at the beginning appears to only point to the Paizo blog root, which I'm assuming will change over time. http://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo5lkl9?First-Look-at-the-Pathfinder-Playtest is the link to the specific announcement post.

  • 04:30 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post Make Up a Goblin Fact
Shouldn't this be a Wiki post? Would make it a whole lot easier to read previous facts. And number them. Like it says in the title. Making a table of random goblin traits to roll on so they're not all generic cannon fodder. Why should they be generic? Now dwarfs, they're all the same if you ask me. 63 (assuming the last numbered ones, though incorrect, actually deserved to be numbered): If you hit a goblin on the head hard enough, and roll a 1, it sinks into the ground and sprouts up from the ground at full hit points, just two feet away. Edit: Ah, Threaded Mode. Nice touch, Morrus. Any chance we could get some Word Wrap in there, and a resizable window?

  • 12:26 AM - Eltab mentioned Morrus in post 5e EPIC MONSTER UPDATES
Is there a post number limit? @Morrus can answer this definitively, if anybody can (and hopefully I just drew his attention to your question). I don't block anybody - no idea if anybody else blocks me - and the post count is 1019 at this time (51 pages as I have the format settings). I don't see any problems here yet. HOWEVER, I've seen other threads break down if they have many large posts in them. Some of the CharOp threads found out the hard way that there IS a "max post length" limit; this may eventually come back to bite your first page. I've only perused the thread here and there, but this sounds like awesome work. For a homebrew project, I'm going to have to compare your version of the Out of the Abyss demon lords to the "by-the-book" published versions. My BBEG is an FR-specific demon lord, and I want the fight against him to feel like the PCs really have saved the world from a Great Evil.

  • 11:25 AM - CubicsRube mentioned Morrus in post Single mechanics from an RPG you love
Wow. Theres a lot of ideas i like on an individual scale, but if i ever made them into a single system it'd be a frakenstein! I love adv/disad in 5e. Its easily my favourite thing in 5e for the same reason as Morrus above outlined. I love bennies. It makes heroes seem truly heroic to me and it allows them to turn the tide of fate to their favour. Im currently digging fria ligans core mechanics of the myz rules. Essentially, roll a 6 and its a success. Roll more 6es and you can use them to buy effects. Simple and elegant. I adore shadow of the demon lords spell schools and modular classess. In fact next campaign i want to run is curse of strahd converted to that system. I also enjoy unknown armies 3e shock gauges and trauma rules. I think they are the most realistic and interesting trauma and insanity rules in an rpg period. Dungeon worlds fronts are great for behind the scene gming. Shadowruns magic as a skill system woth their risk/reward on castuming at high power levels is the most magicy feeling system i think ivve played in. I'm sure theres more, but thats what i can remember at the moment!

  • 07:07 PM - DM Dave1 mentioned Morrus in post Do you use skill challenges?
I like how this guy in the link below (I feel like he’s familiar... like he’s up to something these days... something big) has ported skill challenges into 5e. I’ve already incorporated a few of my own design into our current campaign and they’ve gone well. I like Morrus’s suggestion not to announce “now it's time for a skill challenge!” to the players. Seems pretty obvious, but pretty sure I did just that... so could have gone even better! Lol https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GvOeqDpkBm8

  • 05:25 AM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Starting Adventure 5.
Erg. I haven't read the details of that for years. Hm. PbPs take forever usually. So I'd either just lay it out as a background thing, or make it ultra simplified. Morrus, I don't recall James's screen name to ping him, but maybe he could use this as a baseline for converting this scene in the 5e version, which should probably be more rules-lite. To take down Kell, the Flint Police will be going on numerous missions over the next few days. {Brief overview of their missions.} You're coordinating them, though, so together the team needs to accomplish the following five tasks. For any of these tasks, you can just make a skill check to represent general planning time, or we can roleplay a bit if you want to do something hands-on, or if you have a clever idea you want to pitch. You might call a favor in instead and have someone else make the check on your behalf. You can split the tasks up however you like, but it takes 4 hours for a PC to make each of these skill checks, so you probably want to divide them among the party. The more tasks you succeed at, the better the task force is at taking down Kell's crime syndicate. The DCs are secret. Whenever y...

  • 11:09 PM - hbarsquared mentioned Morrus in post Best way to make a contribution?
I've been meaning to donate and help support ENWorld for a long time, but I'm not exactly sure the best way to go about it. I contributed when ENWorld went completely down several years ago, and I guess I never set up my ongoing contribution at that point. So, Morrus, what do you prefer? Through EN5ider or Trailseeker Patreons? Or the "ENWorld" Patreon I see on the main page? Or is the "subscription" method in account settings still the most viable way to do it? What does everyone else do?

  • 04:26 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post [UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers
The Guild is great for people doing book design as a hobby. But asking them to compete with people doing RPG book design as a living or as a business is problematic. The alternative to the DMsGuild isn't DriveThru or Kickstarter. It's people's fan blogs. It's Reddit. It's Pintrest. It's zero money. After all, 5e and the OGL was around for eighteen months before the Guild but very few people took the plunge to self publishing on DriveThru or Kickstarter. But isn't that the point? That the DMs Guild is meant to be a place for hobbyists to make a little bit of money for products they would have made anyway, but NOT a place for actual design businesses to peddle their wares? For actual for-profit design businesses they should be using things like the OGL, Kickstarter, and Patreon (like Morrus does) so that they have more control of how and what they produce for their business? Including things like branding, logos, original art, cartography, what percentage of the money they bring in and the like? I mean I can get that there's no real "intermediate" step between DMs Guild, and Kickstarter/OGL. A hobbyist gets the experience of trying publish using DMs Guild and tries to build a name for themselves... but the jump to then trying to run a Kickstarter in order to actually become a for-profit design house is a big one. There's no place in the middle where "the best of the best" can go to receive the same amount of viewership that DMs Guild grants them, while not needing as many up-front "fans" or name-recognition in order to successfully pull off an OGL/KS. So anything that keeps DMs Guild itself from becoming a more intermediate step for those writers is saddening and I can understand the frustration. But I don't think that's really what DMs Guild was ever meant to be ...

  • 11:14 PM - Eltab quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
Daleks lose their potency when they're defeated twice a year. Or psychoanalyzed into wanting to ex-ter-min-ate the other Daleks, all by their lonesome. (Would the Doctor recognize if she met THAT one again?)
  • 06:55 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted Morrus in post New 5e Magazine - Rolled & Told
Issue #0 contains an adventure with comics illustrating scenes relevant to it. But also some interesting pregens, and an essay waxing poetic on The Mimic. I thought issue #0 had great ideas, and the art was charming, but some of the execution could’ve been better. I'm not super clear what this is. Is it an adventure combined with a comic? If so, that sounds quite cool.
  • 04:33 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
The actor. I associate him with daytime quiz shows. Oh. Yeah, I can see that could be a bit distracting. I now have this image of Alex Trebek showing up in Star Trek: Discovery, or something like that.
  • 03:32 PM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
The actor. I associate him with daytime quiz shows. I’m sure my perception will change over the coming weeks. It's not like we haven't had to work against preconceptions of companions based on past careers before... https://youtu.be/YECHW8BxqNg
  • 12:14 AM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
Still not sold on Bradley Walsh. The actor, or the character. As I was watching, I was thinking, "Oh, yeah, here's how we know Companions. They are the ones that walk *toward* the weird space things." And then here's this guy who... doesn't. He has a normal, credible amount of fear of things that go ZAP! in the night. I find that... refreshing. They will have a balancing act over the man's fears vs staying with the Doctor, but if they can pull it off, it is markedly different perspective than we usually get.

  • 08:38 AM - Imaculata quoted Morrus in post Aquaman Extended Trailer
What an odd thing to say. Well, they have a lot of competition towards the end of the year (especially because Dead Pool 2 is getting a rerelease). Maybe they are giving us a much better look at the movie to convince the audience that this is the movie they should be seeing. Surely DC is aware that a lot of their recent movies haven't exactly had a good reception, so they do have some convincing to do. After seeing this trailer, I still don't think this will be good. It is a pity that even when they shoot an action scene that is not underwater, it still looks 95% CGI. It is kind of like watching a cartoon. I understand that all of the Atlantean stuff has to be done in CGI, but some of the above water stuff as well? It often feels like they are just throwing computer effects at the screen, hoping it will sell enough tickets. I hope this is a good movie. I hope it is like the Wonder Woman movie, and that DC is occasionally able to turn out something some what decent. But I remain highl...

  • 02:23 PM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Aquaman Extended Trailer
I'm not going to watch that. 5 minutes is too much of the film for a trailer! I'm going to see the movie anyhow, but I don't want it completely spoiled. Most of it is really just two extended scenes. It's like watching a couple clips from an interview show interspersed with snippets.

  • 12:50 PM - ajevans quoted Morrus in post Rules for Corruption
OLD already has corruption rules (in the appendix). I initially missed that, it exists but it doesn't quite fit the purpose for the setting. I think the track minus the Light is a good way of tracking more permanent points, however I'm after something more temporary. Something that can be used as a resource that you risk permanent corruption by using, i.e I want players to be able to use magic but feel it's dangerous and if I they push it there's a risk.

  • 07:24 PM - Steven Barker quoted Morrus in post Some comments and questions about O.L.D.'s Magic system
Wowzers. That will take a lot of unpacking! That's a LOT of questions! :) Thanks for your answers so far! The spellcraft skill has a section on page 156. It is knowledge about magic, as opposed to magical skill. Yeah, that's the section were I saw it before. It's listed there, but not in Fantasy Careers anywhere. It's not in any of the skill categories, nor listed by any career as a career skill. So how do you learn spellcraft? A minute is 10 rounds. I get asked that a lot, and it will be highlighted in v1.2 to make it clear. This is very useful to know, thanks! (RE: creation vs transformation elemental damage effects) They're different effects. One creates an object you'd need to use in some way, the other creates an area which affects all who enter it. I think I understand that, but it seems like the prices are backwards. An item that can deal 1 damage/round if I can find a way to get you to touch it seems worse than terrain that does the same (especially difficult terrain, which is a...

  • 03:40 PM - Xaelvaen quoted Morrus in post Drinking Problem
I have never heard a drink referred to as a “mild alcoholic beverage” before! Sounds like what Data from Star Trek would call it! :) I'll consider that a compliment sir, and say thank you! I'm not a fan of beer, more specifically, so I get those nifty flavored drinks; Mike's Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice, etc, and they have about as much alcohol as kid's grape juice past its expiration date, so yeah - mild alcoholic beverage heh. Besides, the Kentucky Bourbon isn't for DnD, and going blind from the local Moonshine wouldn't work well at all for DMing.
  • 03:16 PM - TregMallin quoted Morrus in post Dragon Reflections #13 - How to win D&D!
Oops! 101879 Mild curiosity -- this was 1978, and it was 1977 when Saul Zeantz sued TSR claiming D&D was a LotR derivative. TSR settled out of court and changed a lot of the Tolkien terminology, but I wonder if that ties in to this strenuous public denial that Tolkien was a primary influence? The same Saul Zeantz who threatened to sue John Fogerty for ripping off his own work with Credence Clearwater Revival (the rights to which were owned by Zeantz) in the song "The Old Man Down the Road". Fogerty wrote a song called "Zanz Kant Danz" as a dig against him. He threatened another lawsuit and eventually it became "Vanz Kant Danz".

  • 12:49 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
I’m sure you’ll like something one day. It’s gotta be tough. It is. My dislike of Macs dates back to the 90's and we were gamers and/or computer nerds who liked programming them (I was not good at programming). I liked Amigas and what became PC's, there were also things like Amstrads and Archimedes around. Had makes at school but everyone had Amiga or PCs at home. They made a bit more sense to me before windows 95 came out and you had things like DOS or pre windows 3.1. Over here though Macs were expensive, underpowered, and all the good games were on things like Amiga and PC. Computers in the early 90's were about the same price they are now (not adjusted for inflation). Macs cost even more than that. I don't think I have actually even one since the late 90's come to think of it.

Yeah. That’s exactly what the official beginners set is for. Lost Mines of Phandelver seconded. Or thirded.I like Phandelver and if I pick a 5e adventure I will likely go with it. I was just curious if folks had favorite "introduction to D&D" adventures.

One thing I never understand bout these games -- they have voice actors do all the NPCs, but when your character talks it's just text. I wonder why they don't have voice actors do that, too? You already have to select your character's voice during character creation. I'd rather not have my character read their lines, especially if its branching dialogue. I've already read the dialogue choice I want to make, I don't need to hear my character slowly drawl their way through a text I already read. I would only skip it anyway. The Mass Effect series(several of them if not all) did full dialogue for all the main character's responses. It worked okay, but so often I would just skip it because I didn't need to here the whole line again. Then they did a thing where sometimes they'd just have a summary of the dialogue; you'd choose option that said "Doubt her" and your character would say a full sentence of two, thus removing the desire to skip the dialogue. That almost worked except that some...
  • 12:03 PM - Grimstaff quoted Morrus in post The Latest Pathfinder 2 Playtest Update Has Dropped!
It's a playtest program, not a finished game. That's exactly what the process is for. If you're judging your interest in Pathfinder 2 on the playtest, you're kinda missing the point. If you don't want to participate in the playtest process (and that's a perfectly valid position) just wait till it comes out next year and decide then. While there may be tweaks, I don't think the central conceit of the new edition: building a character, Lego-style, out of a bewildering selection of ancestry, background, and class feats, is going anywhere.

I can’t imagine how you’d control a party of six with a console.Your main PC has a whip to keep the other five in line.
