There's a range of different campaign management tools available; some free, some not so. RPG Encounters is a free web app designed to work with and sync between all your devices. I hadn't heard of it before, but the creator sent me a hand-written letter to tell me about it, so I could hardly not take a look! The app currently works with four game systems: D&D 5E, Savage Worlds, Stars...

True, though I expect you'll find there's some aspects that are, while not ubiquitous, are very common. There are styles that exist through large swaths of the gaming community that most of us an recognize. The argument arises because media consumption sets expectations. And if you have your expectations set by behavior that actually has different goals than the folks at your table, that's a...

There was a time, way back when, that the group I played with did declarations. But, that was back in 1e, and quite frankly, too many times for both PC and NPC that led to nonsensical dud actions. Most games these days don't have declaration like that as part of their design these days.

I would not advise any new writer to accept less than 3c/w. And that’s really basement rate pay. Accepting less than that normalises it. Editing is a separate job, paid similarly per word. And yes, payment upon acceptance is appropriate. Good call on that! :)

While gamers will remember him as the writer for the Origins award-winning Masks of Nyarlathotep or T&T's The Isle of Darksmoke, he also wrote for Fat Albert, two He-Man shows, She-Ra (which he created), Beast...

If you publish on DMsG, you grant a perpetual license to others, including WotC, to use your work. Artwork, I believe, is excepted. While this doesn’t transfer the copyright, you are also prevented from publishing the work elsewhere. In addition, you pay 50% royalties. In exchange, you get access to some of WotC’s settings and other IP, including art assets. If you want to publish in the...

The GM should always be free to say that something doesn’t apply. That said, think of it like comic books - people die all the time only to come back later. The only limit is a (semi) plausible reason. For the other question, it’s not really the number of exploits which makes something powerful. It how they combine. A thousand abilities gives a PC lots of versatility throughout any encounters...

To be clear - the action/rescue scene can be totally improv, no problem. I do run a lot of GUMSHOE, as the main game I run at home is Ashen Stars - and there what I plot out is the mystery. Folks tend to overestimate their ability to create a sensible mystery by improv - when you just make up mystery elements on the fly, without time to *think* about how they fit together, you tend to have plot...

You could easily argue the opposite, that you shouldn’t strengthen the spell because of the wording. Others have noted that the core of the spell seems to be “losing a turn”. Anything that goes beyond that should be carefully considered, especially because the spell does have some “harm protection” built in

Man, I’d buy an RPG if *you* wrote one with even less information! I mean, maybe I’m too much of a sucker for marketing. Certainly possible. But I *do* buy RPGs because they’re associated with a property I like. I have multiple Star Wars and Star Trek RPGs! I don’t know if that’s common or unusual. From my experience selling the Judge Dredd game, Dredd is the draw, not the system or me.

We all assume that if they publish a game, they will shift their show to *use* the game. D&D players will no longer have a particular reason to take in their show, and the show won't be an advertisement for D&D. Which means effectively breaking the mutual-marketing relationship between them. That's what would get "blown up". The real question isn't whether they can publish a game. The...

I think it’s interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didn’t, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world.

What the hell was that? If you want to make mean-spirited comments about the appearance of other people, find some other platform to do it.

Monte Cook Games' 5E "Science Fantasy Sourcebook", Arcana of the Ancients, has launched on Kickstarter. "Arcana of the Ancients is a sourcebook for 5th edition players and GMs to bring the wonders of mysterious technology and weird science-fantasy elements to their traditional fantasy campaigns. Designed by Monte Cook, Bruce R. Cordell, and Sean K. Reynolds, all of whom have years of...

Agreed. The reason most fantasy world is basically, "real-world, with individuals who can produce special effects," is to allow the player's life-experience-trained intuition to hold sway most of the time. Well, we should note a couple of things. Quantum mechanics and relativity came by when they did because our basic technology started being able to measure things *outside* the...

Again, I think you've been clear. The issue here isn't that you are unclear, but that folks *do not agree with your points*. Or not, as their world has magic, and ours doesn't. Their experiences of their world could be very different than ours. In most works, they are not, but every once in a while, a writer goes deep, and brings up some truly weird stuff. D&Disms work fine, if you include parts of old D&D cosmology - the elemental planes, and the positive and negative energy planes, and say, "Arcane magic is...

Morrus : As somebody who sings with the local LGBTQ chorus (as an ally--I don't want to claim my collaborators' experiences as my own), who has played D&D with at least four LGBTQ individuals, and who has heard a smattering of the stories of exclusion--people who can't take their spouses to family reunions, others who can only go home for Christmas if they accept being called by the wrong name and the wrong pronouns--I personally thank you for confronting bigotry where you see it and for making enworld an inclusive community.

@Morrus You may want to consider revising your community header and rule statement to close some loopholes in it that technically are allowed by it but which you will be equally as unpleased with.

Morrus I was tracking renown/reputation in our Night Below / Out of the Abyss mashup campaign. Not exactly a resource, but here's an example of what I did with my own adaptation of the Renown rules from the DMG/PHB: Renown (Cairngorm’s Hollow) Renown 1: PCs get offers of free services, sporadic free room & board, occasional offers of marriage, or small gifts like a few chickens or a goat. Renown 2: PCs get consistent free room & board, preferential treatment by guards who overlook minor infractions, and access to special quests from Lady Nydaridien. (land deed, Calrow Ruins). Renown 3: PCs treated as villagers and brought in on village ritual practices and voting, free modest lifestyle in village, Lady Nydaridien gives free use of horses in livery stables. Renown 4: PCs receive discounts on special purchases, and are afforded the same level of respect as village elders and Lady Nydaridien herself, gain access to dryad Wyra’s spellcasting service and special downtime activity involving...

So, back to the topic at hand (Sorry Morrus, replied before I saw your post to move on. I was quite ... put out about the comment I quoted and posted on to read all the replies before replying myself.). I do agree with the previous comment that I don't see how this helps build community. It might help give confidence to new people as to how to find good content, but I'm still not sure about that. IMO, good reviews and ratings, and perhaps a few trustworthy bloggers doing detailed reviews might actually help much more than this. But, at least it's something. Kudos to WotC to adapting and trying new things. They've been doing much more of this (trying new things) since the inception of 5E, and the pace is only quickening.

  • 05:00 PM - Ath-kethin mentioned Morrus in post How long have you been gaming?
My starting point was the tabletop boardgame HeroQuest, back in 1990 or '91. Then my mom bought me a copy of ICE's Middle Earth Roleplaying Game around '92 and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. In '93 my friend bought a copy of Earthdawn, and from that point I was hooked. A year and a half later I was introduced to D&D (or more specifically, AD&D 2nd Edition) and that was that. @Morrus: I've been teaching my 3-1/2 year old the basics, moving in through the old D&D cartoon and the new Tales of Equestria game (and HeroQuest), so newbies exist. It will just be a while until he can spell well enough to join ENWorld.

Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make @Morrus a Metron? @Morrus is an Organian, for sure. As for virtual gunpowder, you might want to try remodulating the transmogrifiers that govern the recplicator database. Or remove the field dampers on an EMH emitter and beam the stuff out of the holodeck. Both of those have worked for me in the past.
  • 08:55 PM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post Star Trek Adventures: Now that the full rules are out, what do you think?
Okay, everyone - here's what to do. Make sure your speakers are on and open this link in another tab. Go ahead. It's nothing creepy and it's safe for work. Once you've got that going - do it! - come back here. Cool. You're back. Now imagine the scene, folks: oneshot and aramis erak on Cestus III, squaring off against one another as the Metrons look on...or, in this case, as the rest of us watch them spar over dice mechanics. I'll bring the pink and green space marshmallows (ala' the buffet in Journey to Babel) and we'll see who wins the dice mechanic stats championship grudge match. Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make Morrus a Metron?

  • 05:43 AM - Flips mentioned Morrus in post Combat Questions
Thank you all with your replies. We just thought that a mirror match would give us a "balanced" fight between two sets of combatants. I guess you are right, I had thought that Selena was more of a blaster than she really is, and seeing the retooled version give a good example of how a more "blaster" focused character would look. Although I agree with IvyMike about the adage, damage is one way that people tend to compare magical power. Morrus: I know it isn't trying to be D&D, but I know that this system is meant to be quite flexible to be able to work in many different settings. If we were trying to more accurately replace the higher magic setting, other than increasing the MP slightly, do you have any suggestions about how to rescale the damage progression? Thanks again so much. Everyone's answers have been very helpful.

For Morrus or anyone who deals with such things: In case it matters, it seems that editing the initial post in a wiki thread does not bounce the thread to the top of the thread list (by timestamp order) the same way adding a new post does. The risk here is that some wiki threads that may be often edited and-or referred to but not often posted to (e.g. the Convention List wiki in general RPG discussion) risk falling off the first page - and thus being forgotten or missed by casual or infrequent visitors - unless they are stickied. • 04:12 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post What system would you use for gritty fantasy?
Morrus, have you checked out ZWEIHANDER Grim & Perilous RPG yet? It ticks off all of the major themes of a grim, gritty game. It even has a 35 page morally grey adventure in the core book, if you want something that can be ran quickly without a lot of preparation required. Dang. He beat me to it. I'd recommend Modos 2, which I'm trying to get into the ENWorld downloads section this month. Because: - Characters are quick to make - about as long as this post. So creation-to-play time is minimized. - Character durability runs in the teens to twenties, while the average two-handed weapon does d10 damage. - PCs have options when they run out of health. Wounds, scars, and disease are among them. So is death. - Light rules and short character sheets mean that the GM doesn't spend a lot of time turning pages, so there's less prep investment in a short campaign. - Each PC has a free-form "flaw," which can make things gritty right off the bat. Notes to Morrus: I'm assuming "gritty" m...

While nothing is perfectly representative, I would say their 9 million characters might be more representative than your three gaming groups. I expect DDB takes your stars with a grain of salt. ;) I find it bizarre that in 2019 we still have to say “anecdotes are not data”. Their data isn’t perfect, of course. But it’s not an anecdote. Yeah. The only people who likely have better data are WotC. I'd love to hear this sort of stuff from Mearls. Here and there he drops statistics if you pay attention.

  • 10:15 PM - FrogReaver quoted Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
And that's bad because...? Somebody's wrong on the internet? That's because as posters on a message board about 5e we are the ones that have to deal with others using D&D Beyond data as evidence of some point in the context of other discussions when the data they are citing can't possibly be evidence of their point. That makes the discussion become frustrating for all party's involved. Pointing out up front when the D&D Beyond data is presented what it actually shows and doesn't helps alleviate that issue in future discussions.
  • 09:48 PM - FrogReaver quoted Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
We don’t need data at all. Sometimes they share stuff as a conversation point. And it’s fun to talk about. But we don’t need it. It’s just an excuse for us all to flap our lips The flip side is that if we don't have a discussion about the data and it's pitfalls then many posters draw mistaken conclusions about the data they are showing.
  • 07:44 PM - Steve Cansdale quoted Morrus in post [WOIN] Skill descriptions
Those particular two are mainly used for derived stats. Reactions for initiative, resistance for VITAL DEFENSE. Yep - got those included in my Excel worksheet... So I guess this is also the case for: Foresight (M&RD), Meditiation - Bravery - Discipline - Conviction (MentalD), Fortitude - Resistance (VitalD), and Hardy (Health). In other words (and a little broad-brush, I know), these are "skills" that drive Derived Stats rather than game play?
  • 07:15 PM - Steve Cansdale quoted Morrus in post [WOIN] Skill descriptions
It's keyword-based. The GM decides whether a skill applies to any given situation. I tend to treat engineering, electronics, robotics, and computers as separate subjects, for example. Okay, I understand (and like) that, but some of the "keywords" are a little... slippery / fluffy. I get engineering, electronics, robotics as these are clear and understandable, but (per my post), Reactions and Resistance are not. I don't want to make this too rigid - as this is one of the system's strengths IMHO - but some of these skills need a little write-up / description / example of play for players (and GMs) to use as a basis for play. I think this is especially true for gamers that are coming from more 'rigid' systems (like D&D, Traveller, Star Wars, etc.) that have these things clearly defined.
  • 06:53 PM - Leatherhead quoted Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
Morrus has claimed multiple times that the charts represent all characters created and even includes the ones not necessarily played. I'd lean toward him being correct on this but maybe not? Even if you didn't watch the video, it says "Active Characters" in the screenshot itself? It's what they said in the video. I'm just the messenger. Which video? The last video specifically mentions "Active Characters" just after the 40 minute mark.
  • 05:44 PM - Steve Cansdale quoted Morrus in post [WOIN] NOW Heavy Gunner
Thanks for the fast response... His HEALTH, however, isn't calculated quite the same way as PC health is. See the section on creating monsters and NPCs. Hadn't got that far - thought I'd be using pre-built NPCs initially! ;-) He is a tough foe, though, to be sure. His big weakness is that he's super easy to hit (RD is 12) so your PCs are free to spend attack dice on extra damage. If they get a crossfire, maybe a height advantage, and aim, and spend four dice on +2d6 damage, that SOAK won't seem so bad. Focus fire, and you should take him out. Ben, for example, will be doing 5d6 damage at that point with his Walther PPK. He needs some tactics to take down (the idea of the encounter is to face the PCs to use tactics to get them in the right mindset). If he feels too much for your group, though, you could can weaken him by giving him -1d6 to attack and damage, -4 SOAK, and 30 HEALTH. That will probably be quite easy, then. Yes, I had mentioned that combat is very tactical and re...

You don't have to do that. I really don't have much choice in the matter. It's what I do when something doesn't make sense. They provided data that doesn't make sense so I figure it out. If they provided all their data it most likely would make sense.
  • 01:53 AM - FrogReaver quoted Morrus in post Humans, Fighters, and Life Domain Most Popular On D&D Beyond
    (a) Not everybody uses subclasses. (b) Lots of characters are low level. (c) You're not supposed to make anything of it. It's just an interesting conversation. a) subclasses are not an optional rule for 5e b) then they should have excluded characters below level 3 from the subclass breakdown c) yes bad data makes interesting conversations, but it also makes pointless conversations
  • 01:26 AM - FrogReaver quoted Morrus in post Humans, Fighters, and Life Domain Most Popular On D&D Beyond
No, 10.2% of subclasses are life clerics. They're are useful as much use you can make of them. Which I assume is zero. But they can be interesting for discussion's sake. What use do you have for the data? I just mathed it... Nearly 20% of the classes in their total population of characters don't even have a subclass. What the heck is anyone supposed to make of a population of characters where that's the case?
  • 01:04 AM - GlassJaw quoted Morrus in post Humans, Fighters, and Life Domain Most Popular On D&D Beyond
Is there a reason you said that? Of course there's a reason! A rather crass way to say that some of the things I find least interesting are the most popular. Normal Human Fighter Champion? Bah humbug! I do find it interesting though the class distribution is fairly even (after Fighter and Rogue) but the races are much less so. Dwarves, gnomes, and halflings don't seem to be that popular and elves only slightly more so.
  • 12:53 AM - Jay Verkuilen quoted Morrus in post Humans, Fighters, and Life Domain Most Popular On D&D Beyond
No, 10.2% of subclasses are life clerics. They're are useful as much use you can make of them. Which I assume is zero. But they can be interesting for discussion's sake. I think what "useless" meant was "miscalculated." As in "how is it that the subclass percentage exceeds that of the base class given that all life clerics are, necessarily, clerics?" That's really, really... weird. Part of it might be due to the fact that archetype is only chosen at particular levels that vary for the class in question. Clerics choose that at 1st level while many others don't choose until 3rd level. Also the class breakdowns are pretty much guaranteed to have multiple counting due to multiclass characters. So, yeah, these data are misleading as presented, or at least confusing.

They continue to update them, just like how we don’t read 1066 manuals for steelmaking. Why wouldn’t they? Does that include rewriting the entire operating system for every single automated or computer controlled element of the ship? Flawlessly every time so that not only can people still understand it, but, it also functions without error? How's your Cobol these days? Or your Fortran?

I can never work out when US shows are on. Don't worry, neither can we. Of course, this is FOX so that makes it even worse. They're really good at the squirrely schedules. Still, even with the Super Bowl, I have no idea why the skipped a week. Especially during February, which is a sweeps month.

And is that two episodes in a row Tilly was taken over by an alien entity? Yeah, but it's not like alien-possession-of-the-week. She's just having trouble shaking off the one entity.
  • 09:19 PM - Erekose quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder 2E or Pathfinder 1E?
It may have started like that 10 years ago, but there are tons of people who play PF these days who have never played D&D 3.x. Good point! But what if PF2E has the same impact on PF1E players that D&D4E had on D&D3.xE players?
  • 07:57 PM - D351 quoted Morrus in post New Member Needs Quick Assistance!
It is. (This is also a thread from 2017, BTW). Unfortunately, this was the first thread I found on the subject. I'm also just now noticing that this thread was originally posted in the wrong area. Sorry about all that. But it's mentioned on the "Edit Profile Cover" page? Not to be rude, but where? I tried multiple times to upload an image before I decided to search the forums. All I'm seeing on that page is a description of what a cover photo is and an explanation of how to upload one with the size limitations listed. Then, on failure, it says "Unable to save image". I was assuming that there was something wrong with my file.
  • 05:05 PM - Randeth quoted Morrus in post WOIN Fustrations
OLD v1.2 is just finishing layout and will be out very soon. Just proofreading left to do. I'm definitely looking forward to this. I got very confused when reading an EONS article that mentioned Vital Defense which is totally missing from OLD. :) I want to get a hardcopy but am holding off until 1.2 is out.
  • 12:22 AM - SkidAce quoted Morrus in post Silver Subscription
Most of the site's subscription stuff has switched over to Patreon now. However, we are still paying for the silver subscription ( I have for a long while). Currently I pay for Silver Subscription and Ensider. And I am happy to. I dont want to lose my portrait or my "better" signature. So I am curious as to the status.
