Umbran started a thread Stan Lee - Excelsior!
I know this is mentioned in the Remembrances thread, but the man had such an impact on genre fiction, I think he deserves his own thread. Mr. Stan Lee, one of the fathers of modern comic books and superheroes, has passed, at the age of 95. https://www.npr.org/2018/11/12/106322838/a-marvel-of-a-man-stan-lee-dead-at-95

They're definitely doing the "teaching history" part of Doctor Who, aren't they? I agree that the Doctor was just a bystander in this episode. All they did is witness events.

I don't have kids myself, but I have some very recent experience with this... One of the players in my regular game wanted his 13-year-old daughter to learn about D&D. But, having your father run the game is pretty lame, and can lead to some weird dynamics, so he asked me to do it - I ran a game for the dad, the kid, a friend of hers, and my wife (who is a kid of unofficial godmother to the...

I appreciate the notes. Yeah I think to me the Eidelon's offensive CR is a bit underrepresented because it has a very solid possibility of knocking out an equivalent level player in a single round....which of course reduces the party's offense against it. Compare that to a stone golem that will take a few rounds to do the same, so it has to endure more punishment. But again I don't think this...

By "before" you mean in a different system. I guess if you value your gut reaction over actual play experience, there's not really much to debate, is there? You're right - you the way you feel about this game you haven't played yet is how you feel. :)

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Folks need to read up on biology a bit before going into such things. You folks are making this way too complicated, and you are trying too hard to bind an alien species that only superficially looks human to human mechanisms and structures. I mean, think for a second, if a male can bring a baby to term, it quite obviously doesn't mean the same thing as "male" does in humans. Even on Earth,...

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

Kings and queens to not typically hold their position due to right of personal arms or personal physical prowess. They hold the role by tradition and political acumen. Any writeup that gives them some understanding of History, a decent Insight, and decent scores in, say, Diplomacy, Deception, and Persuasion would do.

So it sounds like your main concern in the argument isn't the damage of ranged, its the true "range" of ranged. For example in 3e many ranged benefits fell away at 30 feet (Sneak Attack, Point Blank Shot). On the other hand, 5e imposes greater penalty for "moderate ranges". For 3e with your composite bow you suffered a -2 to attack rolls from ranges 110 - 215. In 5e, starting at 150 you...

I could understand the argument coming from 4e, as archers often had trick shots and powers. I would say from 3e you would suffer the same issue, as if the front line is doing their job, the archer does just sit back and wail away.

Its an interesting point. I think the point is valid that there are certain monsters that some party members will struggle to save against. But that said, the effects are not so strong that a high level party cannot recover....often recover immediately. Is that necessarily a "bad thing". I don't necessarily think so. The players take their lumps but still come out triumphant. All of this...

Gygax's people had settled into a particular playstyle, and were bragging about their ability. Gygax decided to "show them a thing or two", and gave them an atypical experience - a thing that looked like the typical dungeon crawl, but wasn't. It was tough, in large part, because it defied the playstyle many had become accustomed to. The thing is, we are not many, many years later. We have...

Most Warlock fixing can be done with some adjustments to invocations. Some invocations are great, some are a waste of space on the page. In my game, I wound up combining many of them. I think it comes down to degrees. Modifying a stat block here and there is par for the DM course, but if you find your having to do it continuously to generate threat that suggests something is off. And that's where I find myself. Solo Monsters have always been a tough gig in Dnd. I think 4e's later solo monsters (MM3 and beyond) were probably the best showing to date, as they generally had a good mix of offense and defense. In general, my issue with 5e legendary monsters is there lack of threat. Because attacks and damage do not scale heavily with levels, the number of actions/attacks has a much bigger impact on the...

In earlier editions, there were modifiers to your stats due to age, and the analogous abilities guarded you against the negative stat modifiers. Nowadays? It is mostly fluff. It may matter for some long running campaigns and worlds - if a second campaign is set later in the same world, who is alive, and what state are they in? Thanks to Morrus and BookBarbarian for the comments. I'll have to read the AiME books, and see how I feel... see whether I think low-magic can be done in 5e at all. High magic certainly does seem baked in by default, and that may be quite difficult to overcome for people who want "D&D". If it is as much about expectations as anything else, perhaps that is manageable. Otherwise, perhaps I'll look into TOR. I've learned from experience with Cypher System that getting a group into a whole new ruleset can be a lot more work than I may want to deal with, so I'd prefer 5e AiME if possible.

  • 02:16 PM - SigmaOne mentioned Morrus in post Adventures in Middle Earth magic - does it work?
I just posted an in depth blog post on this topic: http://dicehaven.com/middle-earth/things-learned/ TLDR version: I love Adventures in Middle-earth but it does require a different approach to structuring game sessions and play. Very satisfying though! Thanks for this blog post! I picked up the Adventures in Middle-Earth Player's Guide and Loremaster book this weekend at Gencon on a whim, mostly because I want a strong low-magic setting and that seems impossible using the player's handbook (without disappointing nearly every player at the table). This seems to do that well, with a number of other neat systems. My friends loved the Journey system in The One Ring. (I do think he liked some of the mechanics in TOR better, but I'm definitely set on 5e for a few reasons.) Anyway, I greatly appreciate the post you linked. Morrus, did you ever get around to trying out Adventures in Middle Earth? If so, any comments on the experience?

  • 02:18 AM - Lanefan mentioned Morrus in post Help for someone clueless about D&D before AD&D 1st Edition?
Hi. I am only familiar with D&D as far back as AD&D 1st Edition and would very much like to learn about what the game was like before that - Races, Classes, Monsters, Cosmology, etc. Is there anything like a timeline listing when things appeared in the game? I seem to recall Morrus at one time had a pretty impressive timeline chart showing what was released when through all of D&D's history up to that time, but I'm not sure where he's hidden it or even if it's still on this site.

  • 03:57 AM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post Whatís The Greatest D&D Video Game?
I've always felt that the Final Fantasy style of putting the PCs on one side and the monsters on the other, which was explicitly inspired by American football of all things, is a great reflection of the type of abstract combat that a lot of lazy DMs implement instead of actually tracking positions when using Theater of the Mind. That might well be, but I see the Final Fantasy screen as a division of the game table more than the battlefield. I really hope that FF players didn't see a 50-yard-line down the middle of their screens while fighting, despite the resemblance. Really? It's still more than the sorcerer gets. It's probably not fair, but I was comparing wizards to wizards. Maybe sorcerers don't need a lot of spells, but I was spoiled by D&D's wizards - limited only by the size of their spellbooks. For what it's worth, Morrus, I listened to the first half-hour of the podcast leading up to the end of this post, but still haven't heard about the Greatest D&D Video Game ever. Are there any plans to post podcast timestamps on the Podbean site?

Coding that information wouldnít be too hard. What would be hard is all the data entry. It would take days of work to enter all the text of all the exploits etc. I havenít even added the OLD, NOW, and 2000AD careers yet.Hey, Morrus, what does the php spreadsheet look like? I have a lot of the racial, career, and exploit data typed into an excel spreadsheet. Would you be able to use that easily?
  • 04:33 PM - Emerikol mentioned Morrus in post What are you doing / what hooked you about WOIN?
Morrus Actually something just hit me. With your approach a person with six dice will have a higher chance of a critical failure than a person with five dice. Maybe a number of ones on two fewer dice than the total with an absolute minimum of two dice. This makes high dice pools almost impossible to critically fail but maybe that is okay for now. Your way isn't the end of the world. I like thinking about the probabiliities etc... Thanks again for the info.
  • 02:02 PM - Maelish mentioned Morrus in post Who knows PHP?
@Morrus Will you post a link to your completed tool? I do PHP as well, this is a tool of mine. I'm sure you'll recognize this Fantasy Coin Calculator from an old Dragon Magazine article. Which brings up a question of my own, have there been any newer articles like Coins in a Coffer? I wouldn't mind adding a new feature or two.

You mean the only way you'd buy the product is if it were Spelljammer? Does that mean you only ever intended to buy one more D&D book ever anyway? Even if that one was, all the others wouldn't be. No. I have no need of a setting book. I have more setting material than I can use as it stands now. Spelljammer would at least be an interesting add-on. That doesn't mean I won't ever buy another D&D book. I don't buy the adventures because I don't need them and I strongly dislike the Forgotten Realms. I pick up all the others, though, and stuff like Art & Arcana.

It even autocorrects my jokes about autocorrect....] Big Brother and his Newspeak project would be jealous of what autocorrect can accomplish with far less brainpower.

That's because he's set in the real world, so he doesn't need to be. In a D&D world those "few well motivated brits" are a party of competent adventurers with arcane and divine magic, skilled at arms. Kind of like the group of "Brits" was made of a Monster Hunter (Van Helsing), a Gunslinger (The American Texan), a swordsman (The Rich snob who appeared to have some training), a Healer (the Doctor), and highly motivated but mostly useless Lawyer husband (I don't remember him ever doing anything but be a snack for the 3 sisters and story point obstacle for Dracula, so Story Arch NPC?).

I think those things incorporate a temporary grab. Attacks aren't described in detail. I can see that perspective, but only in a smoked filled room through a stained glass window. I get your point, I just think it is more clear with my approach. As it stands now, he could "miss" on all his unarmed attacks and still "hit" with the bite. That just seems a bit off to me.
  • 02:45 PM - TerraDave quoted Morrus in post Unmasking Masks of Nyarlathotep
We played through this in a previous edition (well, we didn't finish - I think we only got half way) a couple of years ago. It took us 18 months to get as far as we did! I lost three characters. It looks awesome if you want to make a multi-year commitment. Including not just character turnover--which happens in CoC, but also player turnover--which happens in RL.

  • 01:43 AM - Aeson quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
Yeah itís a lot less popular in the US. Not surprising I guess. 10m viewers in the U.K. is one in 6 people. The equivalent pro rated for population would be 50m viewers in the US. So per head itís 25 times less popular in the US. It's growing in popularity. My 14 year old nephew has recently discovered it. Like many teens he knows almost nothing of things older than himself. So he was surprised when I told him about the older episodes. Many here have a hard time relating to something not American. Canada gets a pass because they sound like us. My mom has difficulty hearing so accents are enough for her to turn away from Doctor Who and other British shows. Others can't get past the cheesy FX of the 80s.

Rebellion sells them digitally, I think. They have their own app for comics. Itís an awesome setting. I want it too! Certainly is available (link) - though as Tordelback says, the series will be completed soon, so presumably an updated version of the complete Caballistics will also be forthcoming.
  • 03:07 PM - Brian I quoted Morrus in post Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000 AD... counting down the days!
I won't say I'm glad the Kickstarter is over, but it's nice to be able to relax for a couple of days! Ha! Fair. I meant the open funding period, but yea, still work to be done. I was nonetheless impressed at how quickly I was reading my books in PDF last night regardless. :) I do hope you enjoy the game! I dig in better with print copies, but so far, super-pleased. It definitely looks great, esp. compared to my old GW versions. ;) That I've run WOIN several times now gives me hope I'll actually get some sessions of this version of JD RPG in. :) Again, nicely done!
  • 12:38 PM - Mustrum_Ridcully quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
Depends how far back you go. Tom Baker had 14.5m with City of Death and 13.5m with Destiny of the Daleks. The highest sine the 2005 revival is Voyage of the Damned, which, like you say, was a Tennant (Xmas) episode with 13.3m viewers. He had a few 10m+ eps. This series is doing super well though! The Woman Who Fell To Earth had 10.9m, which is about twice what most of Capaldi's run did. For "first episode" ratings (comparing like for like), Whittaker is in the lead with 10.9, followed by Ecclestone with 10.81, then Tom Baker with 10.8. I am wondering - was Tom Baker already well-known before he became the Doctor? A(s a foreigner I really don't know much about UK actors in that time.) What about the others? I think Witthaker is actually the only one I knew before I watched them, because I saw the first season of Broadchurch. Does their popularity in any way influence those numbers?

  • 08:46 PM - Quickleaf quoted Morrus in post Adventures with extensive backstory
I am rubbish at reading all the backstory in published adventures. It always feels like I'm revising for an exam. I"m reading one now. It's only 4 pages of backstory, but it is *dense* with names and places and history. It very much feels like I'm doing schoolwork! Especially since it's 4 page of backstory and then about 16 pages of adventure. It feels like a history book. Reached a sentence with 4 different place names and two different character names in it. I keep re-reading it in the hope I can parse it! Anybody else have this problem, or is it just me? Uff, that's pretty egregious. I could see 2 pages for a 100+ page adventure perhaps (e.g. Tomb of Annihilation has about 1-and-1/2 pages backstory). But 4 pages is just too much. That style of long-form adventure writing has been around since Dungeon magazine and possibly some of the older modules. I recently re-read "Umbra" (Dungeon #55), one of Chris Perkins earlier adventures that I adore, and there's about 3 pages of bac...

Ah Ravenloft. Though it contributed to the fracturing of the market base in 2e, I have fond memories of it. And the art was something else Ė Fabianís pieces were so atmospheric. I do hope we see a return to Ravenloft, beyond just Barovia, one day. Itís games, not settings (which is why Ravenloft isnít there either).
