3/4 level sounds fine. The thing is it’s such a situational spell. In players hands it’s not that great. Even against a bbeg I don’t think this would be my go to spell. Against players it’s scary strong. Exhaustion is actually very hard to get rid of. Throw this spell out in the first encounter of the day, and you could do more to hinder that player than most anything else you can do...

Pretty good episode tonight. It was a pretty good take on the Enemy Mine plot. The Space Orcs were an interesting element too. And the B plot with Gordon was handled well too, I'd say maybe even better than Trek usually does.

Using the standard array and the "default" equipment given for each class and background, you can make a 5e level 1 character in approximately 10 minutes. I can't think of getting any faster while still maintaining a sense of meaningful choice about your character. For some, the existing character options, even including multiclassing and feats, are still too small. Personally, I'd really love to...

We have had informal agreements aplenty over the years. I'm currently running an Ashen Stars game, in which there are technically formal contract relationships involved as being members of a LASER crew. We most definitely do *not* write it out in full, as it is more like a modern legal document, with scads of sub-clauses. The party's business expert has, on more than one occasion, used his...

I wasn't the one who said, "the ultimate point of character creation isn’t about character custimization but instead it’s about having a character you can play in game." If it is just about having "a character," then why not just do it over and over again? Make an absolute statement, and reap the rewards of pure logic. Leave yourself some wiggle room, and you can avoid such traps.

Rolling in order only creates viable characters in a statistical sense. So, while decision points are slow, in the long run it probably beats having to roll in order several times before a character is generated that doesn't die when an orc sneezes on it. It is a question of whether you front-load your time expenditure or not. I prefer to do the job right once, rather than do quick...

The aesthetics, the sounds, the styles, Palpatine and Vader, stormtroopers, Star Destroyers, the architecture, even the mouse droids, the whole package ... it’s just *got* something that the bad guys in other eras lack. And the balance of “David v Goliath” is exactly right. So I enjoy stuff set in that era.

Fair, though as I recall, previous versions of the 5e SRD had more limited content, more akin to what's in Basic. I glanced at the license, but I didn't probe into the content yesterday. If you wanna be really picky, WotC uses version 1.0a, released in 2000. I was not confident enough that *NO OTHER* versions existed out there to assert such.

We have the basic question of whether they are actually here, or if they are something Mysterio cooked up for him to be a hero fighting. I don't expect other cameos of note, as they won't want to reveal who survives Avengers:...

If you want an example of a world without an open gaming license, look back historically to TSR (owner of D&D prior to Wizards of the Coast) and their positions on D&D compatible content in the early and mid-1990s -- it was an environment where they insisted that anything that included even terminology now common in the genre (such as phrases like "hit points" or "armor class") became property of...

The OGL isn't the "3E" OGL or the "5E" OGL. There's just the OGL. And it hasn't been dumped, because it's non-rescindable. Both 3E and 5E have had some (but not all) of their content released under it, as have many other games. One of the main purposes of the OGL, as Ryan Dancey - its architect - said: it means that D&D is here to stay. Nothing can make it go away, not even the whims of a...

*Basic* 5e was released under the OGL, which to a quick scan doesn't appear particularly different from past OGLs. Rather than changing the control by changing the OGL, they did so by limiting content in the SRD - the basic mechanics are all there, but many of the classes are missing. So, anyone can write to the system, and even do something interesting with large changes (like Mutants and...

Hold on a second. Let us be clear - with a finite, comprehensible ruleset, there *will* be some options that are better than others. Full stop. Those that like doing deep dives into rules options *will* find them. No game designer can avoid this. It follows, then, that the game can't/shouldn't be designed around preserving all the concepts for optimizers, as it is not a tractable task. ...

After all, the architect and the artist probably were considering the setting, so the "juxtaposition" is their thought before it is the photographer's. Let try an example to ensure we are all reading the table right. So lets assume you need a 5 or better to hit, and do an average of 10 dmg before the feat is applied. So the formula is 5.5 - .25X. So that 5.5 - .25 * 10 = 5.5 - 2.5 = 3. So this means that my average damage increases by 3. Now where I'm confused is when you defined average damage. "What does God need with a starship?!?" And, let us face it, "Star Trek: The MOtion Picture" was not an example of a thing... that actually had a plot. Wrath of Khan and the Voyage Home, however, were probably the best movies, for me. I kind of like them all, but the Dominion War had some great stuff in it. And the last season of Enterprise, when they handed things over to Manny...

I can't say I've ever seen a player use an action surge outside of combat, either, but Mistwell's example of getting one last try to catch someone from falling would be a compelling instance. It's just that for anyone who has action surge, it's not often remembered in out of combat situations - it's like a bard starting with regaining bardic inspiration on a long rest, and then four levels later...

Robert Picardo and John Billingsley as guest stars in the same episode? Sure, why not! Pretty good episode too, particularly the dream sequence and the gift.

Here's a slightly larger one, with fewer labels (since the Consulate and Alchemy Row only really matter in adventure 2).

  • 08:06 AM - Ancalagon mentioned Morrus in post Let's Look At Alchemy In Pathfinder 2!
There was apparently a podcast that divulged more information (I don't have a link at the moment) - Alchemical items have "levels" from 1 to 20 - Bombs were supposed to require two hands to use, but that's being changed to one hand Also from the comments, PF2 will NOT use item weight, but a "bulk" system similar to Star finder. Another comment is that alchemists can get more resonance, which is rather important because they need it to use magical items AND wield alchemy. The start of day items, as you guys have guessed, are subsidized for a better rate if you can predict ahead of time which items you will need and make duplicates. Plus, the alchemist gets a class feature that adds extra resonance and scales, Intel for you Morrus ! :)

  • 06:24 PM - iserith mentioned Morrus in post Block Feature Issue
Hello Morrus - My understanding is that the block feature is two-way. If I block someone, I can't see their posts or respond to them and vice versa. While that does appear to be working for posters that have blocked me, it does not appear to be the case for posters I have blocked. They have been able to view and quote my posts and I have also received PMs from posters I have blocked. Would you kindly take a look at this for me? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Morrus, I am interested in submitting some short introductory and low level adventures to En5ider, but I have 1 question for you and the community: Do I need to provide the starting settlement? As in, I wish to submit some adventures that can be 'tacked on' to a settlement of choice by the DM, such as the ones already detailed on EN5ider. Would DMs be happy with this? Would I refer to people in their role, or still give them names etc? Eg: the watch captian vs Thorved the watch captain.

Another comment on shields, realism and gaming: using 2 shields as a fighting style seems just plain wrong to me. (This was mentioned in an earlier post by Paizo). If I was GMing the game (probably won't ever happen) I wouldn't allow it, and I certainly won't use it as a player. Morrus, I see that terms like "virtue signalling" (a new one to me) and SJW are not allowed on this forum, but is the same true of terms like "white privilege" and similar?
  • 07:09 PM - Cergorach mentioned Morrus in post Do We Still Need "Oriental Adventures"?
"Two things I can't stand are racism and the Dutch!" - Michael Caine's character in one of those Austin Powers movies. When you quote a movie, quote it correctly! So that everyone can bake in it's glorious contrariety... ;-) Morrus: The article isn't discussing ANY particular culture, that would be great content! But your doing now what we all don't like saying that Africa or the Orient is a culture, it isn't. It's a collection of cultures. Instead of authors raving against things that are wrong with RPG products, why not show them how it's done?

  • 03:11 AM - Nagol quoted Morrus in post Echohawk's Collector's Guides Broken?
I have never even heard of that error message.... this is so far above my pay grade. Not a clue. It's probably a wordier version of the reported ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_LOCATION. That error says there are multiple HTML headers in the document which is a big no-no so as to prevent a type of injection attack. Originally, I thought Kiraya_TiDrekan's set up was probably to blame because it was a single user complaining. It may be the showwiki.php is missing an exit() after the redirect, it may be the formatting is slightly off -- the browsers are getting more strict with their parsing.
  • 01:28 AM - Imaculata quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Huh? It would have surprised you if they did the thing you were expecting? It would have surprised me if they had done what I were hoping they would do at that moment. Instead they kind of flirt with a cool premise, and abandon it. Subverting audience expectations isn't always a good thing, if the turn sucks.

Sorry to break it to you, but it’s fine on the app. The problems you are experiencing are due to the very large number of people who have blocked you, and the resultant thread ID changes. As a fix, I suggest you stop getting blocked. That came out of nowhere. Why the hostile response? I volunteered a reply to the OP - and yourself - in the belief I was helpful. If you don't want regular forum users to reply to meta questions, maybe then not solicit the input? Plus, no posts are blocked when using the app, so your testy reply not only feels unprovoked but also hard to understand. :(
  • 02:44 AM - Shasarak quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
You are confusing media sound bytes and analogies with physics and wondering why it doesn’t work in your head. Physicists use equations and stuff. If you want to point out the flaws in physics, you need to show where the equations are wrong. Not where you heard some “ironic claim” about something. I mean, yeah, sure go up to a particle physicist and tell them how “ironic” you find their “claims”. But be prepared to explain their “claims” (read: their life’s work) first. But that is not true though. What is Dark Matter and Dark Energy? Do you have a particle physicist prepared to put their "lifes work" up as a scientific Theory. No, I think I will stick to what real particle physicists say which is, forgive my paraphrasing, that they dont know.

  • 02:07 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
As I said earlier, this is just a conversation/ending nothing statement. Sure. By definition, we can’t know anything for certain ever. So what? We talk using what we know, or we all just stop talking about anything ever. What’s the fun in that? It's fine to talk using what we know, but when we are using it to stop reasonable speculation about the future tech in a thread that's about speculation about future tech, that's not very fun, either. :)
  • 02:25 AM - Quickleaf quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
Man, tough crowd! Hah! Indeed. I think the desert scenes part of that "Croaking Sirroco" mockup were well put together. I like how there's a sense of flow, narrative progression, and unveiling secrets there. That part works well. I do feel conflicted about listing ability/skill checks and DCs and damage amounts when your space is so limited, however. If it's meant to be adaptable for a wider level range, that seems like something you can trust the DM to handle. Might free up a little space for you to work with.

  • 06:54 PM - Quickleaf quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
This is kinda how it looks with little coloured icons showing the challenge level of each encounter, but I feel it now starts to look quite messy. 103400 For me personally, it feels busy, angled text is harder to read, and would murder printer ink, echoing what 77IM was saying. It could be the low-res, but the bolded text could be even bolder to differentiate it; it feels like a semi-bold, and I'm having to look carefully/squint to recognize it as different...actually I think the color backgrounds are contributing to making that differentiation harder. I think the skeleton of something workable is there, however. It also reads like an site-in-which-adventure-could-happen rather than an adventure, in that there's no hook for the players. I get the aesthetic "let the DM fill in the blanks", but having a starting point, having a clearly framed start scene, saves the DM a lot of work.

I was talking to Zardnaar about the phrase “only a theory”. Calm down. I also did not reference the theory of relativity. I meant things that turn up in sci fi/quantum physics. Zero point energy, anti matter, fusion power, tachyon whatever things like that.

  • 11:25 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
It’s not “only” theory. We use relativity in all sorts of things. Your GPS depends on it; GPS satellites are subject to relativistic effects due to the speed they move and their altitude in Earth’s gravity well. The word “theory” in science doesn’t mean “hypothesis”. I know but say 150 year ago science as it understood it probably could not conceive of an atomic weapon. In 100 years who knows, there are quantum physics theories that might pan out, someone might invent a fusion reactor (not that it will produce enough energy for FTL). There is anti matter and tachyons and things like that and some combination of genetic engineering, AI, generations ships, gene seed ships, and a new power source could enable something. It might take years to get there but interstellar travel might be possible one day (slowly barring some sort of massive breakthrough). The could invent a fusion reactor, stick it in a problem send said probes towards some close stars, they broadcast back any habitable planets,...

I'm not ignorant of how useful relativity is, or what it's theoretical underpinnings are. But, Newtonian mechanics were absolutely critical to a lot of technological advancements and we now know them to be wrong but useful. Assuming we're at the end of science is wrong -- we do not know.

The crash was in 2013. You’re off by over a decade! :) But yeah, the site ran for a year or two back around/before the turn of the century as just a news page with no forums. They were a later addition. There was a data loss around 2002, because I had to recreate my account, and was miffed that it said 02 instead of whatever it was previously. I think its why no one really has a join date before Jan 02?. I was moving around in the military and didnt rejoing until Sep 02. But I'm afraid I remember no other details, as of why. Thanks for the info.

The site didn’t even have a forum back when it started. We had forums for a while before the, what was it? 2002 crash/data loss?. But yeah, I barely remember it just being the new edition's coming web page. It was a unique time, before the explosion of social media.
  • 05:43 AM - Ovinomancer quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
"Slippery Slope" is also a logical fallacy, just like the God of the Gaps. :) Sigh. It's an informal fallacy, which means it's not automatically wrong, but is instead an argument that doesn't support the conclusion. A true fallacy is an argument that invalidates the conclusion while an informal fallacy doesn't say whether or not the conclusion is wrong, just that the argument used doesn't support it. And slippery slope is one of those 'maybe' informal fallacies. It really depends on the form of the argument. If I say that if A happens, and then explore a solid causal chain that leads to B possibly happening, that's not an informal fallacy. If I instead say that if A happens then this tangentially related and more extreme event B will happen, that's a slippery slope fallacy (informal). I really do wish people would stop name checking the informal fallacies as if doing so was actually an argument. If you can't articulate the weakness of another's argument without reference to a n...

  • 05:04 AM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Check Out The Cover of Swords of the Serpentine From Pelgrane
I’ve played a session of Timewatch at a convention. I’m assuming this is a fantasy version of that? Same core ruleset? It is based on the same core ruleset. But Timewatch (like most Gumeshoe games) is at its heart an investigative game. Swords of the Serpentine has given it a lean towards the cinematic action adventure you'd expect from Conan or Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. In most Gumshoe games, you spend points of investigative skill pools to find things out. In SotS, you do more spending points to *do* things.

The demographics are a lot younger than they used to be. And that's just people who have accounts, of course. The *readership* is the important stat (it's a news site, primarily, not a forum) and the are skewing a LOT younger these days. that’s interesting. I occasionally hit the front page to see what’s up, but I mostly visit for the forum chatter.
  • 02:01 AM - MoonSong quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
It’s a common fallacy known as “god of the gaps”. Better explained as “if I can’t explain it, it must be magic”. I'm coming more from "this 'rational' explanation needs the violation of so many fundamental physical laws and common sense that is no different from the emotional and irrational one." Anyway I don't think of myself as rational anyway so it makes more sense to me. There's no practical way for alien visitors to exist, not without violating the lightspeed limit and reversing entropy. Nothing short of actual magic can change that, and in real life magic is too pathetic, dangerous and difficult to allow it. So whatever it is that we see in the skies is anything but alien in nature.
