There’s plenty of money to be made selling print products. On their scale, that’s a LOT of money. Just look how many of the things they’re still shifting years into the edition.

I don't know what "traditional Star Trek" is? every show has bene very different. I love Discovery, and my favourite Star Trek is the TOS movies II-IV trilogy, if that helps. The main problem with the show is avoiding the hatewatchers.

I feel like it’s one of those kinds of topics that absolutely NEED to get discussed if ANY group is gathering for the first time, along with things like “house rules” and “sensitive subject matter/X Cards.” Both groups I game in enjoy a fairly large...

It’s not a question of just flipping a switch. PoD needs different files to the onscreen PDF. It’s actually quite a bit of extra work and reformatting, followed by an approval process at DTFPG’s end, and then ordering and paying for a proof. If they plan to change it at all, they’d have to do that all over again each time.

There's a range of different campaign management tools available; some free, some not so. RPG Encounters is a free web app designed to work with and sync between all your devices. The app currently works with four game systems: D&D 5E, Savage Worlds, Stars...

There are styles that exist through large swaths of the gaming community that most of us an recognize. The argument arises because media consumption sets expectations. There was a time, way back when, that the group I played with did declarations. But, that was back in 1e, and quite frankly, too many times for both PC and NPC that led to nonsensical dud actions. Most games these days don't have declaration like that as part of their design these days.

I would not advise any new writer to accept less than 3c/w. And that’s really basement rate pay. Accepting less than that normalises it. Editing is a separate job, paid similarly per word. And yes, payment upon acceptance is appropriate. Good call on that! :)

In exchange, you get access to some of WotC’s settings and other IP, including art assets. If you want to publish in the...

The GM should always be free to say that something doesn’t apply. That said, think of it like comic books - people die all the time only to come back later. The only limit is a (semi) plausible reason. For the other question, it’s not really the number of exploits which makes something powerful. It how they combine. A thousand abilities gives a PC lots of versatility throughout any encounters...

To be clear - the action/rescue scene can be totally improv, no problem. I do run a lot of GUMSHOE, as the main game I run at home is Ashen Stars - and there what I plot out is the mystery. Folks tend to overestimate their ability to create a sensible mystery by improv - when you just make up mystery elements on the fly, without time to *think* about how they fit together, you tend to have plot...

You could easily argue the opposite, that you shouldn’t strengthen the spell because of the wording. Others have noted that the core of the spell seems to be “losing a turn”. But I *do* buy RPGs because they’re associated with a property I like. I have multiple Star Wars and Star Trek RPGs! I don’t know if that’s common or unusual. From my experience selling the Judge Dredd game, Dredd is the draw, not the system or me.

We all assume that if they publish a game, they will shift their show to *use* the game. D&D players will no longer have a particular reason to take in their show, and the show won't be an advertisement for D&D. Which means effectively breaking the mutual-marketing relationship between them. That's what would get "blown up". The real question isn't whether they can publish a game. The...

True. But I don't know how difficult it is to make an animated show. It *sounds* a lot more difficult to me, but I've no way of gauging it.

You have an issue trying to justify it being a long and arduous overland journey, though, especially with an ocean in the way. Why don't they get on an eagle jet plane and just fly there? You may want the thematic element that carrying The One Thing is bad for you. A radioactive power cell, maybe? Then read a bunch of Captain America comics, where the Red Skull is trying to bring...

Well, that’s branding, isn’t it? People would say “I’m playing Critical Role tonight!” and folks would know what that means. Building a brand is hard, but if anybody in the TRPG space, CR would have the best shot at it.

Sure. New ventures entail risk. An RPG rulebook isn’t *that* much of a risk, though. Especially if it was a Kickstarter stretch goal. Much easier to produce than an animated show!

So, given two facts: 1) WotC indicated last year that streaming shows like Critical Role are responsible for over 50% of new player acquisitions; http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?4677-Over-Half-Of-New-D-D-Players-Got-Into-Game-From-Watching-Online-Play&p=7280374 2) Critical Role is currently demonstrating an ability to run a multi-million dollar Kickstarter in a small RPG industry...

I think it’s interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didn’t, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world.

Well this is ... peculiar... http://forums.cubicle7.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11706 This new regulation, GDPR - some data protection thing - is apparently so onerous to meet that they feel forced to close their forum. • 10:07 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post D&D Has the Biggest Playerbase, So Why is it the Hardest for 3rd Party to Market Too?
Fair enough. I have to admit though, I find it a bit difficult to believe that Morrus has never seen 2pp used as a term on the boards. I have. But, hey, it's not really that big of an issue to be honest. Again, there are so few licensed publishers out there that it's not really a problem. As far as the original question goes, I'm actually frankly confused why someone would think that it's much harder for 3PP to get their name out there than it was, say, back in the d20 boom days. With the mountain of Patreons, Kickstarters and various other venues, I'm seeing an awful lot of pretty successful attempts at getting product out there. Thing is, there's just so much material out there that it can be pretty easy to get lost in the weeds.

  • 11:02 AM - Li Shenron mentioned Morrus in post PbP games: what works and what doesn't?
Oh and I have a suggestion for Morrus too... try to see if there is a possibility for adding a forum functionality by which a forum member can subscribe to a thread and get notifications when someone else replies to the thread. AFAIK this is not how it works at the moment, you get notifications only if you receive a PM, mention or XP. Having notifications on subscribed threads would greatly help a PbP player know when a game has progressed, and reach the thread in a couple of clicks rather than having to find it in the subforums.

...te, caring etc then men" so if a woman speaks up "loudly", she's acting against her role. I know that this holds true more in face-to-face environments, whereas online debates are often no more than mere black-on-white (or inversed) text. Still she identified as a woman. And from what I read, Afrodyte is done with playing the "nice little woman". She's (rightfully) upset about the fact that there are many victim-blaming posts or posts filled with micro-misogyny in this thread that were not being called out while her arguments were dissected. She's also under the impression that male-identifying posters are being less challenged and have it far easier being listened to. And I understand her. Because being a woman who's active online, who has a mind of her own and who gets vocal from time to time can be hard. That being said, I still think that ENWorld is one of the best places to discuss my/our hobby, including systemic problems in our community. And I'm really thankful for Morrus and the other mods to keep it this civil. (Because, honestly, other, more general gaming forums oftentimes look as if they're the little brethren of /b )

So I want to say I am sorry for the stuff I am missing and I want to do better. I don’t do cons but since the problem is everywhere I need to step up and do better in general. In general women are very willing to give individual men several chances to get it right so long as they are trying to move in a positive direction. Personally, I'll excuse any first offense that is done without malice (doing something on purpose to push buttons is not without malice in my book). I'll even accept slip-ups if you keep trying to do better. We're all human (I didn't see any AI's here) and humans make mistakes, so I'm never looking for perfection. I'm looking for progress and growth. I'll be honest, this discussion has gone on to the point where I'm surprised. That's pleasantly surprising and speaks well for Morrus and ENWorld's moderation.
  • 04:00 PM - RedJenOSU mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? No. That does not seem consistent with your viewpoint. Do you yield to authority (Morrus) and because lowkey13 has none per say in this environment you deem him as an enemy if he requests the same thing from you? No. Le me try to put the dots close together. Afrodyte has stated previously that if @Morrus feels that what she is doing should stop, then upon being notified of his choice as the moderator, Then she will respect his request as the moderator. At that time she would discontinue her attempt to demonstrate through her requests (Name, SSN, pic) instances in this discussion that she personally feels fall somewhere between unfriendly and hostile toward women.
  • 03:33 PM - Sadras mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
Yet, I find it interesting that my fairly benign statements showing that I don't automatically trust every self-proclaimed good dude are getting more heat than some of the deeply unsettling things several posters have been saying in the past 15 pages I've been participating on this thread. That is a curious statement. The last 15 pages have been relatively mild compared to what had been posted before where Morrus got involved several times. As for you getting heat more than the trolls, citation needed. I'm not seeing any evidence of what you're claiming, especially given the XP count which equates to support. If you really think that an exaggerated demonstration of the daily precautions I have to take to avoid harassment and assault is unfairly blaming poor, innocent men who are just trying to have a discussion, you haven't been paying attention to what several women and men have been saying on this thread, and you are not on my side (whatever being on my side supposedly means), and it all of it sustains and supports the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in environments where people are supposed to be safe. So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? Furthermore why doe...

...o started the thread then replied "You need to read up on the concept of "plus" threads if you think I want an echo chamber, or if you don't see the very valid reasons why the site supports such threads. If you want to keep discussing this that's fine, but I will need to ask you to start a new thread to do it." A second user said they doubted the premise of the thread was possible, and was told again "This is a plus thread. If you want to argue against the premise of the thread, start a new one." When questioned on that, the poster then said, "Questioning the point of the thread is exactly what you don't get to do in a plus thread." Can a user now declare a thread they start to be designated a "plus" thread and therefore police their thread for anyone who questions a premise of the topic? Are we now supposed to always start a new thread if we question the premise of a designated "plus" thread? It's possible I missed that new rule. I asked elsewhere and someone mentioned Morrus had discussed the possibility of such a thing but it had never been enacted as a rule as far as they knew. So, is this a thing now?

  • 05:34 AM - Ancalagon mentioned Morrus in post Most popular class/race combos
Two comments: 1: I note that the "spread" of classes is much less dramatic than the race spread. The most popular class is a bit more than twice as popular as the least popular class. That's a good thing IMO! Race wise however, the spread is what, 12-13 fold? That's huge. Even is we exclude the non PHB races, the spread remains about 5-fold. I have to say that ... I'm ok with that. I would be far more concerned if the situation was reversed 2: Morrus : this is very cool info, but I'm curious why you are re-posting it?
  • 01:54 AM - Yaarel mentioned Morrus in post Most popular class/race combos
@Morrus Did the top 10 list accidentally leave out the Elf Wizard? The chart says there are 2744 Elf Wizards and 2568 Human Wizards. This means, the Elf Wizard is a more popular combo than the Human Wizard.

  • 06:17 PM - CapnZapp mentioned Morrus in post I gotta ask: the "laugh" points, are they meant as appreciation or as mockery??
Morrus: this issue doesn't go away. I'm going to report a series of my own posts where a user clicks laugh (yes, I know the button is called "laugh with this post") even though my remarks are not in any sense made with humor in mind. In short, I find it impossible to interpret this as anything else than mockery. I am writing this post because I know you are busy and might have a mod handle the reporting, so you might not even see the series of reported posts. (I need to post this first so I can include a link in my reports for your moderation convenience) If you or your mods redtext the user to stop abusing the laugh functionality all is well in the world. But I am ressurrecting this thread to clearly flag that it is not a new issue, and it remains a serious one. I've gotten dozens of laugh points I could have done well without, and I feel that if I do not bring thus back up to your attention it will never stop. I can't be alone in getting these points that only burn. If y...

I’m sure they won’t struggle to get any permission they need. I wouldn’t be surprised to see WotC ask *them* to feature D&D branding. D&D does NOT have a good track record on film. But even if that was not an issue, explaining what Mind Flayers are, the whole hive mind thing, and elder brain, etc. Would waste a lot of precious animation time to explain. The Briarwoods are vampire despots. Easy-peasy to convey to the new viewer without a lot of exposition. Assuming that they can. The D&D brand has never done well in movie form, but it has been passed around between a few studios, so the rights to publish something explicitly D&D-labelled in movie or series form may not actually lie with WotC right now. Unless google has failed me, Warner Bros own the D&D movie rights and have a film in production for a 2021 date. No idea if that's still true, though. They'll probably blow through the $5.75m goal before the stream tomorrow night.

You're kinda creating micro steps out of single steps though. <snip> I mean, yeah, I agree that Rolemaster is much more complex than D&D 5E, but you can also stretch out any process into as many steps as you want to.I've played a lot of Rolemaster - regular (weekly or fortnightly) sessions from 1990 to 2008. I think my identification of the steps is pretty reasonable. For 4e D&D - which I've also played quite a bit of - I would say: 1. Choose attack 2. Declare target 3. Roll d20 4. Add attack bonus 5. Comare result to target's defence 6. Roll damage 7. Apply damage and any other effect That makes 4e less complex than RM, and to me that seems right. Choosing a power to use in 4e is comparable to declaring the RM OB/DB split - it sets your tactical orientation for the round; comparing to defence is comparable to subtracting deffence in RM (though mathematically easier); and rolling damage is comparable to rolling a crit. But in 4e there are no table look-ups, which are a...

I hope not. I love D&D and I love Pathfinder, and I love lots of other games. I would rather see a variety of games, not everything being D&D (like happened in the d20 System days). why not open up a setting to an other system of easier conversion it is an interesting setting and I want to play a 5e game in it (sine I most comfortable with this system) they don't have to go full on out to be third publisher again but a world source book with tips to adapt it why not? sounds great i would love ot have it like the Mitgard setting just to drag an drop the best parts into our games easier
  • 09:01 PM - BookBarbarian quoted Morrus in post Comic-book Author Jim Zub On D&D's Surge In Recent Years
The confluence of those 4 major factors: - Nostalgic older players, many with kids. - New young players who want to customize their entertainment and make things. - Playcasts breaking gate keeping. - Celebrity gamers increasing visibility and breaking the cliches of who games. I've definitely noticed the third point but never would had thought of the second. I'm not familiar with Jim Zub, I haven't really collected comic in the past 10 years, but I think he's hit on some very insightful things here.
  • 08:06 PM - Staffan quoted Morrus in post Why the hate for complexity?
There’s no game that takes twelve steps to resolve an attack. That’s as much an extremism as describing light games as just improv theatre. I count 11 steps in Shadowrun, though you could argue that some of those steps are actually the same step (much like you can mush together different calculations on the same line in physics). I don't count the attacker's choice to attack and how, but I do count the defender's choice of defense. 1. Defender chooses how to defend. 2. Attacker rolls relevant combat skill + modifiers. 3. Defender rolls relevant defense. 4. Net successes = Attacker's successes - Defender's successes. 5. If Net successes <0, the attack misses. If >0, the attack hits. If =0, the attack is a grazing hit that does do direct damage but does connect, in case that's relevant for things like touch attacks. 6. Modified damage value = base damage + net successes. 7. Modified armor value = base armor - Armor Penetration (minimum 0). 8. If modified damage < Modified armor, the final dam...

Pretty much every Kickstarter shares the exact same "U-shaped" pattern. 105227 Normally that’s a safe bet. But a lot of people might be introduced to the Kickstarter after the show on Thursday, so there might be an atypical spike there. It is true my wild guess didn’t include the tail end of the “u” at the end. So my guess could be higher. But 10-11 million already feels ridiculously high...

Why did you insert the word “only” into my statement, thereby changing its meaning? Because the show pretty much only plays music from the 80's or earlier. I find it very jarring that these characters would be grooving to music from before they were born without having any music that they would likely have heard. I mean, they play music on a turntable. An old fashioned one at that. When these kids were in high school, we had MP3 players. It's not like they're audiophile snobs playing vinyl. Anyway, I just found it really jarring that the music selection for the show was, to me at least, anachronistic.
  • 01:32 PM - Ryujin quoted Morrus in post Umbrella Academy - Not bad, not great
Goodfellas is one of my favourite films. Lots of terrible decisions; one of the best films ever made. Indeed. Movies in which the wheels come off tend to be far more interesting.
  • 04:43 AM - Hussar quoted Morrus in post Umbrella Academy - Not bad, not great
Same reason I groove to the Beatles. You only groove to music made before you were born? I mean, sure, I love the Beatles too. Listened to them lots as a kid. But, as a Gen X'er born in the 70's, I'd hardly call them the anthemic music of my generation. And, nearly the music in this show was 80's stuff. Makes sense for Stranger Things, but makes a lot less sense for someone born in 1989. I'd also point out that the Beatles are hardly a one hit wonder band that never did anything else than one popular song. How often do you groove out to Honey by Bob Goldsboro?
  • 02:42 AM - Kramodlog quoted Morrus in post Umbrella Academy - Not bad, not great
Yeah. One of my pet peeves is when people call non-perfect characters “lazy writing”. A show where everybody makes the perfect decision and acts in the most optimal manner sounds boring as hell to me. A show where everyone makes bad decisions all the time is good TV for you? Low standards, man.

I wasn't saying they were coin toss games. I was saying a coin toss game is an example of a light, yet comprehensive game.My apologies, then, for misreading. I think a literal toin-coss game may be a bit weak for serious RPGing, because the outcomes of action resolution would seem not to be connected enough to the character. (Even allowing for the fact that the character will have some degree of expression in the player's choice of actions to declare.) Of games I know, Cthulhu Dark is the closest to that "weak" edge while maintaining character differentation in mechanics as well as "concept". (Each PC has an occupation - not chosen from a list, but specified by the player based on his/her knowledge of real world occupations - so when I played we had an investigative reporter, a longshoreman and a legal secretary. If the action that is declared falls within occupational expertise then a die is added to the pool, thus increasing the odds of a good roll.) Trying to relate this back to t...
  • 12:37 AM - pemerton quoted Morrus in post Why the hate for complexity?
Sure. The coin toss game.Have you played Prince Valiant or Cthulhu Dark? Neither is a "coin toss" game. Prince Valiant is a standard dice pool game that can be played with coins because each die is 50/50 success/failure. Cthulhu Dark is different sort of dice pool game, in that only the highest die counts, and you can have between 1 and 3 dice in your pool depending on character and context. Action resolution in Prince Valiant is more subtle than in 5e's non-combat framework; Cthulhu Dark is probably comparable to 5e's non-combat in terms of subtlety of resolution, but has more going on in determining how many dice to roll.

It's 2019. The general population is online. Who isn't? I basically meant online you hear about B5 alot, IRL not so much its a bit obscure. It doesn't have the cultural awareness of say Stargate.
  • 07:28 AM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
Do all Kaylons except Isaac have red eyes? Was Isaac always able to do the head guns? A number of them had orange eyes. I couldn't get a feel for why some were orange and some red, but only Isaac was blue. I did think for a moment as they were carrying a dozen Kaylon bodies off of the bridge that they had best be careful and not forget which one is Isaac. My big "Really!?" moment was when the Kaylon, who are supposed to be a bazillion times smarter than biologicals, tell the crew that they will all be killed and then threaten to kill them if they don't help kill everyone else. I mean, didn't any of them think that just maybe that would just make the biologicals dig in their heels, because "What the hell, we're going to be killed anyway."? All in all, though, I loved the episode. Not as much as Part 1, but it was still a very good ending in my opinion.
