Under most circumstances I'd agree, but since we're talking about a random encounter that (if I remember the Martek portion correctly) just pops out of the ground/glass and starts snacking, it should probably be modded in some fashion to avoid a no-win kill-a-character-or-three moment. Now, if it's modded as a "cutscene instance" like Quartz describes, where only major stupidity would get them...

Ah. Not all random encounters are intended for you to fight and win. Sometimes, you randomly encounter things that you are supposed to then avoid at all costs.

Jimmifett, it would be nice if you posted about something else sometimes, but since as far as I can make out the only reason you post in this community is to decry any hint of inclusiveness, it's time for you to leave.

Plus, multiple tabs (one open to each section you are flipping between) or "previous view", or "split window view." Not to denigrate good old reliable paper (try playing D&D in a power outage with a tablet at 20% power and no battery!) but there are plenty of flippin' tools. (term used non-ironically :))

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

Is the Purple Worm in this an important encounter plot-wise, or is it a random encounter? I love Desert of Desolation, but I can't remember specifically right now. If it's a random encounter, I might skip it or substitute a smaller version (maybe a 'baby' purple worm or variant species with a -2 to attacks, about 1 dice less damage, (about 3 dice less for the poison tail) and about 125 hp or so?...

There's a creature in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes called the Venom Troll that is a CR7 critter that can be DEVASTATING to even higher-level parties if a particular party is very melee-heavy and not ranged-attack-heavy. Every time the thing is hit with damage, acidic pustules pop and damage all creatures within 5 feet of it with poison damage. A party in melee with it is potentially damaging...

I'm running Ashen Stars on a regular basis... The game is pretty specifically designed to play out rather like an Episode of Star Trek - if you know what a "procedural" TV show is, Trek is kind of a sci-fi procedural, and the system models that well. The starship combat is pretty ingenious, and it has the focus of combat just where an episode of the series would have it. What you are...

I would love to have the organization infiltrate some of the police force but I would assume such a place would do routine screenings to ensure their people don't have magical compulsions or curses. For the next two weeks you may put your promotional/publisher posts in the relevant game forum. Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Folks need to read up on biology a bit before going into such things. You folks are making this way too complicated, and you are trying too hard to bind an alien species that only superficially looks human to human mechanisms and structures. I mean, think for a second, if a male can bring a baby to term, it quite obviously doesn't mean the same thing as "male" does in humans. Even on Earth,...

I'd agree with everybody else that I'd play the game before trying to adjust it. You can very rarely get a good feel for a game until you've played it.

Because it occurs to me, as an ironically curious consequence of that, that if WotC’s goal was hypothetically to sell books to you specifically, opening the DMsG has therefore lost them sales rather than gained them.

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

  • 03:49 PM - Tormyr mentioned Morrus in post Suggest the enemy for my 5E war campaign?
The campaign guide for 5e War of the Burning Sky should be coming out within a week or two. It contains a warfare supplement that Morrus created for the 3.5 version. The encounters are set around specific tasks the PCs can complete that influence the battle as a whole such as taking a strategic point, assassinating a high-level enemy official, defending against an enemy surge, etc.

Just purchased No Thank You Evil! by Monte Cook Games. Played an Elena of Avalor Themed adventure with my 4 year old and 10 year old. I had to create all the Elena player Characters and Monsters, but it was pretty easy. End result they loved it. Morrus, if there is a place to put Fan made materials for No Thank You Evil! please let me know or I can create a section and upload what I have already created.

  • 05:55 AM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post A 308-Page Paperback WOIN Core Rulebook For Under $10!
Can someone tell me what all these acronyms stand for Truthfully, I only know some of them. WOIN stands for “What’s OLD is NEW,” which is a lovely pun used as the general name for the generic system that Morrus designed. OLD is the fantasy incarnation of WOIN, NEW is the sci-fi version, and NOW is the modern/contemporary equivalent. Despite OLD, NEW, and NOW being structured like acronyms, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an official statement on what they stand for, and any guesses I might have would just be pure conjecture on my part.

The new Facebook/Twitter/Print/etc. buttons that won't stay hidden are quite annoying! They cover the text of the article. After hiding them, as soon as I scroll the article they unhide. Very much agreed! @Morrus. just a clarification, Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are not the same brand. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it would be beneficial for newcomers to either IP to not become confused.

  • 05:39 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Here Are Your Official Top 10 Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2018
Morrus: Legend of the Five Rings 5th Edition won't use the classical Roll and Keep dice (d10s) pool system of the previous four editions, but a modified Roll and Keep with proprietary, narrative dice (with 6 or 12 sides), similar - but not identical - to those introduced by Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition and then employed in the various Star Wars RPGs by Fantasy Flight Games (and now in their Genesys "universal" system).

  • 12:41 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Taking Nominees for Most Anticipated RPG of 2018
Morrus: Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne, is not out yet, not even for the backers, as far as I can tell. Delta Green has the Handler's Guide out in PDF. City of Mist has the Starter Set out in both psysical and PDF form and the Core Rulebook out in PDF. Correct about World of Lazarus being a setting for Modern AGE. Sentinel Comics RPG has only the starter set out. The rulebook is due out in 2018. Don't know if it counts. Regarding the Flash Gordon RPG for Savage Worlds: it's not a fully-independent game, but it needs the Savage Worlds rules which aren't included in neither of the books, so it shouldn't count for the purpose of this poll (unless for some reason this rule doesn't apply to SW products... in fact, Savage Rifts made the top of the poll two years ago and it wasn't an independent ruleset too).

  • 12:47 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post Nathan Stewart Promises WotC will do something with new settings in 2018
And the whole point of going OGL was so that other companies could put out new campaign settings so that they didn't have to. Morrus even has a thread on the boards here that lists all the various campaign settings that have already been made for 5E. If you can't find something there you're looking for... then it's pretty much guaranteed that your desire and want is so narrow that WotC sure isn't going to scratch your itch, even if they *do* eventually produce a completely new setting at some point. That's just simply odds.

  • 10:22 PM - GreyLord quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
I can’t imagine how you’d control a party of six with a console. Perhaps similar to how one controls a party in Pillars of Eternity and Divinity Original Sin on the Xbox I would suppose. Those are some ideas on how one could do it.
  • 09:32 PM - knikpiw quoted Morrus in post Questions about positional modifiers in combat
If you move after attacking, you’re no longer crossfiring. Last action. Thoughts on my viewpoint?
  • 09:03 PM - geomarshal quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
I think you’re talking about an entirely different game. The Baldurs Gate PC games had you managing a party of adventurers. The original PC games could be multiplayer. Two of my friends played with me all the way through Throne of Bhaal. The first slot is still the main character for storyline purposes. You could have up to six players. If you had less than six, you could still pick up NPCs up to the six slot limit. We only used Imoen for the most part since we didn't have a thief.
  • 06:30 PM - TerraDave quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
Basically just like the Baldur's Gate games, but with better graphics and Pathfinder rules. At least so far. Sounds good.
  • 05:07 PM - Ath-kethin quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
I didn’t even know Baldurs Gate could do that. I only ever played them on the PlayStation II, but both of the ones we had could be 2 player coop.
  • 04:51 PM - Ath-kethin quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
Basically just like the Baldur's Gate games, but with better graphics and Pathfinder rules. At least so far. "Just like the Balder's Gate" games" except single player only. Since two-player coop was my favorite aspect of the BG games, that's really a deal breaker for me. The closer I can get to having a video game feel like a tabletop experience, the happier I am. Given the apparent adherence to Pathfinder rules and setup, the lack of coop is puzzling to me.
  • 03:08 PM - GrissTheGnome quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
That was a different thing. Not sure what the status is on that. This game is the result after a fashion, the mmo fell apart and the company went under. The license was snapped up and the new company made the Kingmaker RPG.
  • 11:54 AM - Aldarc quoted Morrus in post The Latest Pathfinder 2 Playtest Update Has Dropped!
It's a playtest program, not a finished game. That's exactly what the process is for. If you're judging your interest in Pathfinder 2 on the playtest, you're kinda missing the point. If you don't want to participate in the playtest process (and that's a perfectly valid position) just wait till it comes out next year and decide then.I am participating in the playtest, but I can also recognize from feedback from my table that this has been a major turn-off. I am not trying to convince others that they are wrong for liking this change, but I am expressing, and have expressed, my dissatisfaction with this change.

  • 02:22 PM - neobolts quoted Morrus in post The Adventure is Over
Hopefully. But you never know on the internet! It is a very knowing joke. The show was fairly progressive, and despite the absurdity of relationships between cartoon pigs and elephants, magic dogs and rainbow unicorns, etc...there was some "controversy": A small subset of conservative Americans complained to the network when a season 3 episode "What Was Missing" and related online short "Mathematical!" suggested lesbian subtext between a vampire-fiend and sentient candy. "Mathematical!" got pulled, an employee got fired, and denials were issued. The staff bided their time, and then in the season 10 series finale paired the vampire-fiend and sentient candy off with romantic dialogue and a kiss.
  • 01:47 PM - Dioltach quoted Morrus in post The Adventure is Over
I can't quite parse what you're saying, but I really hope its not what I initially think it is. Judging by the half-dragon/half-donkey Shrek reference, he's joking.
  • 09:01 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Morrus in post Wizards wanted to fire us, so can we fire them for setting laziness
This is pretty old news, and related to a comment by a designer about sexism in the community. Let’s not regurgitate that yet again; it’s in a enough threads. re. The FR — sure, valid discussion, if old; I think it’s time to accept that from a consolidation of multiple brands into one strong brand POV, FR is D&D now. There’s no FR logo any more, just a D&D logo. I mean, we’re getting at least two new settings with official support this year, so probably not so much. But the main main setting will remain FR, because it is vaguely traditional fantasy, covers a lot of bases, and has a high level of recognition. I wish they’d at least venture further away from the Sword Coast, but hey, I don’t need special rules to play in Rashemen. A Hathran subclass would be rad, but I don’t need it.
  • 04:26 AM - pemerton quoted Morrus in post Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals
there are two kinds of argument being made here. The first is that both 3rd and 5th edition are heavy weight rule systems. The second is that they are of roughly even weight as such. Page count and rules density on a page is an indicator, but cannot be conclusive about weightiness in this sense. For instance, one could envision light weight rules, expressed verbosely. The two arguments can be sustained separately or together. In making this judgement, one has to think about where 5th edition D&D sits among contemporary RPGs. Then there is the question of, who for? RPGs that posters here might agree are light weight, could seem heavy weight to someone unfamiliar with the kind of manuals these boards address. I think the question of weightiness is rightly a relative one - is 5th edition D&D relatively heavier than Savage Worlds? - and is rightly measured from the perspective of the community of hobbyists who are familiar with them. Having DM'd 3rd edition and 5th edition, running weekly ses...

re. The FR — sure, valid discussion, if old; I think it’s time to accept that from a consolidation of multiple brands into one strong brand POV, FR is D&D now. There’s no FR logo any more, just a D&D logo. So you feel that Eberron was too different from standard DnD to remain the default setting or did 4E do too much harm to the setting? To me FR is both very generic and filled with way too much of two things. The first is just plain crap with all the very bad history used to explain and justify the various edition changes. The second is all the designer and writer Mary Sue's running around in the setting. Give me a 6E that has a whole new world I can discover and learn about instead of more books that rewrite the same old history of the Realms for the next edition of rules.
  • 12:34 AM - Slit518 quoted Morrus in post Attempting to make a super light RPG: QUICKD6
Don’t tell me. I’m having fun inventing this and don’t want to plagiarise. Okay, I won't. But you reminded me of the game with this idea. I just wish I remembered the name.
  • 12:25 AM - Slit518 quoted Morrus in post Attempting to make a super light RPG: QUICKD6
Just whiling away an hour or two before I appear on a podcast. So here's my initial idea, which I'm calling QUICKD6. Or maybe QUICK SIX. That sounds better. CORE MECHANICTo do anything you roll 3d6. On a 10 you succeed (unless it's opposed against another creature, in which case both roll 3d6 and the highest wins). Situational modifiers can add or remove a dice, as can awesome or poor tools. CHARACTER CREATIONYou have 3d6 (or a number of dice equal to your LEVEL if you are not LEVEL 3) to divide between a bunch of things you're good at. For example: 2d6 - fighting 1d6 - running These increase the 3d6 you normally roll. So when running, you roll 4d6 instead of 3d6. MAGIC (or PSIONICS), unlike other things, starts at 0d6. Because it's magic. It has a special rule: you can use it for anything (attack, lift a thing, etc.), but each time you use it it goes down by one die. When it reaches zero, you can't do any more magic. It restores after a full night's sleep. You also choose two things...

  • 11:34 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals
The ‘average person on the street’ would find all RPGs heavy. Compared to other RPGs, 5E is mid-light. And it’s waaaaay lighter than a lot of boardgames. Not sure what “in my experience” means. Are you saying you’ve surveyed average people in the street and asked them to rate the heaviness of 5E compared to other tabletop RPGs? That’s awfully industrious of you! :) Most of the people I know who play started with 5E: they tend to see it as complex and involved (though rewarding).
