I could even see a case for persuasion and deception, but P/I have very different approaches. Many other skills might have the case made to break them up...

3/4 level sounds fine. The thing is itís such a situational spell. In players hands itís not that great. Even against a bbeg I donít think this would be my go to spell. Against players itís scary strong. Exhaustion is actually very hard to get rid of. Throw this spell out in the first encounter of the day, and you could do more to hinder that player than most anything else you can do...

Pretty good episode tonight. It was a pretty good take on the Enemy Mine plot. The Space Orcs were an interesting element too. And the B plot with Gordon was handled well too, I'd say maybe even better than Trek usually does.

Using the standard array and the "default" equipment given for each class and background, you can make a 5e level 1 character in approximately 10 minutes. I can't think of getting any faster while still maintaining a sense of meaningful choice about your character. For some, the existing character options, even including multiclassing and feats, are still too small. Personally, I'd really love to...

I'm currently running an Ashen Stars game, in which there are technically formal contract relationships involved as being members of a LASER crew. We most definitely do *not* write it out in full, as it is more like a modern legal document, with scads of sub-clauses. The party's business expert has, on more than one occasion, used his...

I wasn't the one who said, "the ultimate point of character creation isnít about character custimization but instead itís about having a character you can play in game." If it is just about having "a character," then why not just do it over and over again? Make an absolute statement, and reap the rewards of pure logic. Leave yourself some wiggle room, and you can avoid such traps.

Rolling in order only creates viable characters in a statistical sense. So, while decision points are slow, in the long run it probably beats having to roll in order several times before a character is generated that doesn't die when an orc sneezes on it. It is a question of whether you front-load your time expenditure or not. I prefer to do the job right once, rather than do quick...

Fair, though as I recall, previous versions of the 5e SRD had more limited content, more akin to what's in Basic. I glanced at the license, but I didn't probe into the content yesterday. If you wanna be really picky, WotC uses version 1.0a, released in 2000. I was not confident enough that *NO OTHER* versions existed out there to assert such.

Classically - illusions are what he does. Well, again classically, there's a group of extradimensional villains from the comics called the Elementals. We have the basic question of whether they are actually here, or if they are something Mysterio cooked up for him to be a hero fighting. I don't expect other cameos of note, as they won't want to reveal who survives Avengers:...

If you want an example of a world without an open gaming license, look back historically to TSR (owner of D&D prior to Wizards of the Coast) and their positions on D&D compatible content in the early and mid-1990s -- it was an environment where they insisted that anything that included even terminology now common in the genre (such as phrases like "hit points" or "armor class") became property of...

Both 3E and 5E have had some (but not all) of their content released under it, as have many other games. One of the main purposes of the OGL, as Ryan Dancey - its architect - said: it means that D&D is here to stay. Nothing can make it go away, not even the whims of a...

*Basic* 5e was released under the OGL, which to a quick scan doesn't appear particularly different from past OGLs. Rather than changing the control by changing the OGL, they did so by limiting content in the SRD - the basic mechanics are all there, but many of the classes are missing. So, anyone can write to the system, and even do something interesting with large changes (like Mutants and...

Hold on a second. Let us be clear - with a finite, comprehensible ruleset, there *will* be some options that are better than others. Full stop. Those that like doing deep dives into rules options *will* find them. No game designer can avoid this. It follows, then, that the game can't/shouldn't be designed around preserving all the concepts for optimizers, as it is not a tractable task. ...

After all, the architect and the artist probably were considering the setting, so the "juxtaposition" is their thought before it is the photographer's. Let try an example to ensure we are all reading the table right. So lets assume you need a 5 or better to hit, and do an average of 10 dmg before the feat is applied. So the formula is 5.5 - .25X. So that 5.5 - .25 * 10 = 5.5 - 2.5 = 3. So this means that my average damage increases by 3. Now where I'm confused is when you defined average damage. A Starfleet NPC a team of PCs might encounter and can possibly hire for a while. Dr. Selar Dr. Lieutenant Selar is a Vulcan medical officer in Starfleet, who was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise D at one point. She is well versed in xenobiology for treating multiple species, and is currently assigned to the Sol system by Starfleet to aid any relief agencies that require assistance. She has...

Cardassian Cardassians are a humanoid species easily identifiable by their light-grey skin, two thick vertical neck ridges that receded back to the crown of their head, and an inverted tear-shaped ridge in the center of the forehead. The ridge is thickest immediately above the eyes, protecting them and creating an deep-set appearance. This trait earned them the derogatory nickname "spoon...

Moving slow: Armor doesn't really impact your movement speed, so long as you have the strength to wear it. Clanging Around: The question isn't really what armor they are wearing. The question is whether they have Stealth. Heavy armor gives disadvantage on the check, but really, a character who doesn't have the skill is not quiet enough to reliably sneak around anyway. Note - heavy...

Yeah. It's a wonderful trilogy, with real character arcs which span it. It's the equivalent of Star Wars IV-VI for me, and the best Trek has ever been.

"What does God need with a starship?!?" And, let us face it, "Star Trek: The MOtion Picture" was not an example of a thing... that actually had a plot. Wrath of Khan and the Voyage Home, however, were probably the best movies, for me. I kind of like them all, but the Dominion War had some great stuff in it. And the last season of Enterprise, when they handed things over to Manny...

I can't say I've ever seen a player use an action surge outside of combat, either, but Mistwell's example of getting one last try to catch someone from falling would be a compelling instance. It's just that for anyone who has action surge, it's not often remembered in out of combat situations - it's like a bard starting with regaining bardic inspiration on a long rest, and then four levels later...

  • 01:47 AM - thorgrit mentioned Morrus in post Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!
I'm interested, but cautiously optimistic. For my own purposes, I looked forward to Starfinder but it turned out to be too complicated for me to figure out character creation just reading the book. I remember when they came out with Unchained, and I was wondering if they'd use that to springboard off a new revised PF.5 or something, bundling the idea of traits and backgrounds and things all in together on a new core rulebook. Can do nothing but wait and see. I'm super pessimistic about any conversion guidelines that promise more than "just remake characters from the ground up" and "you can use old published adventures but ignore all the stats and use the new stats instead". Morrus: the link "Paizo has just announced" at the beginning appears to only point to the Paizo blog root, which I'm assuming will change over time. http://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo5lkl9?First-Look-at-the-Pathfinder-Playtest is the link to the specific announcement post.

  • 04:30 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post Make Up a Goblin Fact
Shouldn't this be a Wiki post? Would make it a whole lot easier to read previous facts. And number them. Like it says in the title. Making a table of random goblin traits to roll on so they're not all generic cannon fodder. Why should they be generic? Now dwarfs, they're all the same if you ask me. 63 (assuming the last numbered ones, though incorrect, actually deserved to be numbered): If you hit a goblin on the head hard enough, and roll a 1, it sinks into the ground and sprouts up from the ground at full hit points, just two feet away. Edit: Ah, Threaded Mode. Nice touch, Morrus. Any chance we could get some Word Wrap in there, and a resizable window?

  • 12:26 AM - Eltab mentioned Morrus in post 5e EPIC MONSTER UPDATES
Is there a post number limit? @Morrus can answer this definitively, if anybody can (and hopefully I just drew his attention to your question). I don't block anybody - no idea if anybody else blocks me - and the post count is 1019 at this time (51 pages as I have the format settings). I don't see any problems here yet. HOWEVER, I've seen other threads break down if they have many large posts in them. Some of the CharOp threads found out the hard way that there IS a "max post length" limit; this may eventually come back to bite your first page. I've only perused the thread here and there, but this sounds like awesome work. For a homebrew project, I'm going to have to compare your version of the Out of the Abyss demon lords to the "by-the-book" published versions. My BBEG is an FR-specific demon lord, and I want the fight against him to feel like the PCs really have saved the world from a Great Evil.

  • 11:25 AM - CubicsRube mentioned Morrus in post Single mechanics from an RPG you love
Wow. Theres a lot of ideas i like on an individual scale, but if i ever made them into a single system it'd be a frakenstein! I love adv/disad in 5e. Its easily my favourite thing in 5e for the same reason as Morrus above outlined. I love bennies. It makes heroes seem truly heroic to me and it allows them to turn the tide of fate to their favour. Im currently digging fria ligans core mechanics of the myz rules. Essentially, roll a 6 and its a success. Roll more 6es and you can use them to buy effects. Simple and elegant. I adore shadow of the demon lords spell schools and modular classess. In fact next campaign i want to run is curse of strahd converted to that system. I also enjoy unknown armies 3e shock gauges and trauma rules. I think they are the most realistic and interesting trauma and insanity rules in an rpg period. Dungeon worlds fronts are great for behind the scene gming. Shadowruns magic as a skill system woth their risk/reward on castuming at high power levels is the most magicy feeling system i think ivve played in. I'm sure theres more, but thats what i can remember at the moment!

I like how this guy in the link below (I feel like heís familiar... like heís up to something these days... something big) has ported skill challenges into 5e. Iíve already incorporated a few of my own design into our current campaign and theyíve gone well. I like Morrusís suggestion not to announce ďnow it's time for a skill challenge!Ē to the players. Seems pretty obvious, but pretty sure I did just that... so could have gone even better! Lol https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GvOeqDpkBm8

  • 05:25 AM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Starting Adventure 5.
Erg. I haven't read the details of that for years. Hm. PbPs take forever usually. So I'd either just lay it out as a background thing, or make it ultra simplified. Morrus, I don't recall James's screen name to ping him, but maybe he could use this as a baseline for converting this scene in the 5e version, which should probably be more rules-lite. To take down Kell, the Flint Police will be going on numerous missions over the next few days. {Brief overview of their missions.} You're coordinating them, though, so together the team needs to accomplish the following five tasks. For any of these tasks, you can just make a skill check to represent general planning time, or we can roleplay a bit if you want to do something hands-on, or if you have a clever idea you want to pitch. You might call a favor in instead and have someone else make the check on your behalf. You can split the tasks up however you like, but it takes 4 hours for a PC to make each of these skill checks, so you probably want to divide them among the party. The more tasks you succeed at, the better the task force is at taking down Kell's crime syndicate. The DCs are secret. Whenever y...

I've been meaning to donate and help support ENWorld for a long time, but I'm not exactly sure the best way to go about it. I contributed when ENWorld went completely down several years ago, and I guess I never set up my ongoing contribution at that point. So, Morrus, what do you prefer? Through EN5ider or Trailseeker Patreons? Or the "ENWorld" Patreon I see on the main page? Or is the "subscription" method in account settings still the most viable way to do it? What does everyone else do?

  • 04:26 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post [UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers
The Guild is great for people doing book design as a hobby. But asking them to compete with people doing RPG book design as a living or as a business is problematic. The alternative to the DMsGuild isn't DriveThru or Kickstarter. It's people's fan blogs. It's Reddit. It's Pintrest. It's zero money. After all, 5e and the OGL was around for eighteen months before the Guild but very few people took the plunge to self publishing on DriveThru or Kickstarter. But isn't that the point? That the DMs Guild is meant to be a place for hobbyists to make a little bit of money for products they would have made anyway, but NOT a place for actual design businesses to peddle their wares? For actual for-profit design businesses they should be using things like the OGL, Kickstarter, and Patreon (like Morrus does) so that they have more control of how and what they produce for their business? Including things like branding, logos, original art, cartography, what percentage of the money they bring in and the like? I mean I can get that there's no real "intermediate" step between DMs Guild, and Kickstarter/OGL. A hobbyist gets the experience of trying publish using DMs Guild and tries to build a name for themselves... but the jump to then trying to run a Kickstarter in order to actually become a for-profit design house is a big one. There's no place in the middle where "the best of the best" can go to receive the same amount of viewership that DMs Guild grants them, while not needing as many up-front "fans" or name-recognition in order to successfully pull off an OGL/KS. So anything that keeps DMs Guild itself from becoming a more intermediate step for those writers is saddening and I can understand the frustration. But I don't think that's really what DMs Guild was ever meant to be ...

  • 05:04 AM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Check Out The Cover of Swords of the Serpentine From Pelgrane
Iíve played a session of Timewatch at a convention. Iím assuming this is a fantasy version of that? Same core ruleset? It is based on the same core ruleset. But Timewatch (like most Gumeshoe games) is at its heart an investigative game. Swords of the Serpentine has given it a lean towards the cinematic action adventure you'd expect from Conan or Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. In most Gumshoe games, you spend points of investigative skill pools to find things out. In SotS, you do more spending points to *do* things.
  • 04:19 AM - robus quoted Morrus in post Review Dragon Heist, Mad Mage, and Ravnica!
The demographics are a lot younger than they used to be. And that's just people who have accounts, of course. The *readership* is the important stat (it's a news site, primarily, not a forum) and the are skewing a LOT younger these days. thatís interesting. I occasionally hit the front page to see whatís up, but I mostly visit for the forum chatter.
  • 02:01 AM - MoonSong quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
Itís a common fallacy known as ďgod of the gapsĒ. Better explained as ďif I canít explain it, it must be magicĒ. I'm coming more from "this 'rational' explanation needs the violation of so many fundamental physical laws and common sense that is no different from the emotional and irrational one." Anyway I don't think of myself as rational anyway so it makes more sense to me. There's no practical way for alien visitors to exist, not without violating the lightspeed limit and reversing entropy. Nothing short of actual magic can change that, and in real life magic is too pathetic, dangerous and difficult to allow it. So whatever it is that we see in the skies is anything but alien in nature.
  • 12:28 AM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post 3 New Official Starfinder Classes Out For Playtesting
Thatís what all playtest feedback is like. Well, aside from the 90% which is ďI skimmed through the book. Here are my house rules.Ē As long as the survey is well designed, it should be able to filter down to the solid playtesters. You donít need all that many. With a longer playtest you might be able to get two or three sessions of play in. Thereís just more opportunity for people to be solid playtesters. Especially when youíre not trying to compete with Christmas and New Years. (I normally play every two weeks, but over the next month and a half Iíll be lucky to squeeze in a game.) And with more time, youíd have more opportunities to work in the character to test, and perhaps even see play at multiple levels, rather than trying to awkwardly force it into an already planned session. A slightly longer playtest at a different time could result in twice the feedback.

Doesn't really matter, though, does it? We're not trying to represent anybody, we're just a happy little niche online community talking amongst itself. Not generally no. What we do here is fine. I generally like it here. But it is worth reminding people that the enthusiasm over new D&D books isnít necessarily low. Just low here. And a low number of reviews here doesn't translate into a general lack of interest with the larger audience. And extrapolating from the lack of interest here to making statements about sales and possible alternate sources of the revenue is pretty dubious logic.
  • 07:27 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
Agreed - but the emotional responses wouldn't matter if we didn't have the ability to make the tools of our own destruction. That's tautological, in that *any* ability of an animal can be the cause of its destruction. You can walk? Well, then you can walk off a cliff, fall, and die. Do you blame your legs for walking off the cliff? Silly legs! I should never have had legs! Should have stuck with fins, because fins couldn't have had me walk off a cliff! Moving onto dry land was my problem. Nobody ever dies in the water, right?
  • 06:49 PM - MNblockhead quoted Morrus in post Review Dragon Heist, Mad Mage, and Ravnica!
Doesn't really matter, though, does it? We're not trying to represent anybody, we're just a happy little niche online community talking amongst itself. It matters if you are trying to gauge interest in and success of a product. Which is what Jester was getting at. But, I'm happy to stay here conversing with my 300,000 closest friends. :-) Also, Discord drives me nuts. I've forced myself to use it a few times because some Kickstarter creators have the best fan support on that site and some on-line games require its use. But it is just awful for having conversations over time and mining prior conversations for information. Same with Twitter. Forums like this will continue to play a role for those who want to engage in more substantive online conversations. Now, get off my lawn. Wait, sorry Morrus, this is your lawn.

  • 05:07 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
Climate change, AI, more advanced weapons of mass destruction... our intelligence could prove to be the exact opposite of a survival trait. With respect, the thing that is currently endangering us is not our intelligence, but our lack thereof. Our current predicament is based in emotional responses, not reasoned and intelligent responses.
  • 03:16 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
Thatís a possibility, but itís not assured. *shrug* None of us know. Weíre all just offering at-best semi-informed guesses. Climate change, AI, more advanced weapons of mass destruction... our intelligence could prove to be the exact opposite of a survival trait. It might even be the answer to Fermiís Paradox. I agree. On the other hand, scientific advances might enable us to scrub the pollutants out of the atmosphere in 10 or 20 years. Science is like a snowball rolling downhill. It keeps progressing bigger and faster. Maybe it smashes us. Maybe it smashes our problems. As you say, none of us know.
  • 02:33 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
Briefly. The cockroaches will outlast us when our ďsurvivalĒ trait kills us. That's a possibility, but it's not assured. I can tell you this, though. Intelligence might get us off our plane in the future to somewhere else or multiple somewhere elses, where we can survive, enabling us to survive the expansion of the sun, planet killing asteroids, comets, etc. Cockroaches and every other non-intelligent species will all ultimately die when the planet does.
  • 04:55 AM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
I don't think so. Not in the way that Tennant and Smith did. Iíd disagree. The 3rd and 6th Doctors were all about the bombast and claiming authority in the situation. But most of the Doctors are a little more subtle. The 13th still reminds most of the 5th, who was the more soft spoken figure. Or the 7th when heís being disarmingly friendly. But recent Doctors have turned it up a bit more as it acknowledges the Doctorís reputation and impact. When I saw the Capaldi run I couldn't help but analyze everything that happened. But watching the new season I've been doing that less and less. And that's a good thing. I've just been enjoying the show. I like Capaldi, but it really wasn't easy viewing. Whittaker is fun. Modern Who is very much like a roller coaster. It works best when you sit back and just enjoy the thrill ride. But it can take a long time to make a fairly simple journey.

Seems a lot of people agree that Attack of the Clones is the worst. So much so that they keep calling it The Clone Wars instead! I would correct it in my post, but frankly I don't give a damn. That movie does not deserve any more attention from me.

I must've missed that long standing joke! Good one... You're telling me you never heard anything along the lines of, "How many Bothans died, tho?" in reference to espeionage, sabotage, etc, when discussing Star Wars media (and sometimes when discussing non SW media) from games to EU books? Really? That's pretty weird to me, since I've been hearing/seeing those jokes in pretty much every venue, online or off, I've ever discussed Star Wars or general nerd stuff, my entire life.
