Umbran started a thread Stan Lee - Excelsior!
I know this is mentioned in the Remembrances thread, but the man had such an impact on genre fiction, I think he deserves his own thread. Mr. Stan Lee, one of the fathers of modern comic books and superheroes, has passed, at the age of 95. https://www.npr.org/2018/11/12/106322838/a-marvel-of-a-man-stan-lee-dead-at-95

They're definitely doing the "teaching history" part of Doctor Who, aren't they? I agree that the Doctor was just a bystander in this episode. All they did is witness events.

I don't have kids myself, but I have some very recent experience with this... One of the players in my regular game wanted his 13-year-old daughter to learn about D&D. But, having your father run the game is pretty lame, and can lead to some weird dynamics, so he asked me to do it - I ran a game for the dad, the kid, a friend of hers, and my wife (who is a kid of unofficial godmother to the...

I appreciate the notes. Yeah I think to me the Eidelon's offensive CR is a bit underrepresented because it has a very solid possibility of knocking out an equivalent level player in a single round....which of course reduces the party's offense against it. Compare that to a stone golem that will take a few rounds to do the same, so it has to endure more punishment. But again I don't think this...

By "before" you mean in a different system. I guess if you value your gut reaction over actual play experience, there's not really much to debate, is there? You're right - you the way you feel about this game you haven't played yet is how you feel. :)

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Folks need to read up on biology a bit before going into such things. You folks are making this way too complicated, and you are trying too hard to bind an alien species that only superficially looks human to human mechanisms and structures. I mean, think for a second, if a male can bring a baby to term, it quite obviously doesn't mean the same thing as "male" does in humans. Even on Earth,...

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

Kings and queens to not typically hold their position due to right of personal arms or personal physical prowess. They hold the role by tradition and political acumen. Any writeup that gives them some understanding of History, a decent Insight, and decent scores in, say, Diplomacy, Deception, and Persuasion would do.

So it sounds like your main concern in the argument isn't the damage of ranged, its the true "range" of ranged. For example in 3e many ranged benefits fell away at 30 feet (Sneak Attack, Point Blank Shot). On the other hand, 5e imposes greater penalty for "moderate ranges". For 3e with your composite bow you suffered a -2 to attack rolls from ranges 110 - 215. In 5e, starting at 150 you...

I could understand the argument coming from 4e, as archers often had trick shots and powers. I would say from 3e you would suffer the same issue, as if the front line is doing their job, the archer does just sit back and wail away.

Its an interesting point. I think the point is valid that there are certain monsters that some party members will struggle to save against. But that said, the effects are not so strong that a high level party cannot recover....often recover immediately. Is that necessarily a "bad thing". I don't necessarily think so. The players take their lumps but still come out triumphant. All of this...

Gygax's people had settled into a particular playstyle, and were bragging about their ability. Gygax decided to "show them a thing or two", and gave them an atypical experience - a thing that looked like the typical dungeon crawl, but wasn't. It was tough, in large part, because it defied the playstyle many had become accustomed to. The thing is, we are not many, many years later. We have...

Most Warlock fixing can be done with some adjustments to invocations. Some invocations are great, some are a waste of space on the page. In my game, I wound up combining many of them. I think it comes down to degrees. Modifying a stat block here and there is par for the DM course, but if you find your having to do it continuously to generate threat that suggests something is off. And that's where I find myself. I've run 3 5e campaigns, with both vets and newbies, and continuously I have found that 5e monsters don't cut the mustard unaltered in my games. I had a far easier time...

Solo Monsters have always been a tough gig in Dnd. I think 4e's later solo monsters (MM3 and beyond) were probably the best showing to date, as they generally had a good mix of offense and defense. In general, my issue with 5e legendary monsters is there lack of threat. Because attacks and damage do not scale heavily with levels, the number of actions/attacks has a much bigger impact on the...

In earlier editions, there were modifiers to your stats due to age, and the analogous abilities guarded you against the negative stat modifiers. Nowadays? It is mostly fluff. It may matter for some long running campaigns and worlds - if a second campaign is set later in the same world, who is alive, and what state are they in? Morrus : As somebody who sings with the local LGBTQ chorus (as an ally--I don't want to claim my collaborators' experiences as my own), who has played D&D with at least four LGBTQ individuals, and who has heard a smattering of the stories of exclusion--people who can't take their spouses to family reunions, others who can only go home for Christmas if they accept being called by the wrong name and the wrong pronouns--I personally thank you for confronting bigotry where you see it and for making enworld an inclusive community.

@Morrus You may want to consider revising your community header and rule statement to close some loopholes in it that technically are allowed by it but which you will be equally as unpleased with.

@Morrus needs to increase the PHP memory limit to something larger than 128M as a test, just to make sure it's not something simple. The error I'm reproducing, however, is over a value smaller than the current limit, so I'll troubleshoot some more.

Morrus I was tracking renown/reputation in our Night Below / Out of the Abyss mashup campaign. Not exactly a resource, but here's an example of what I did with my own adaptation of the Renown rules from the DMG/PHB: Renown (Cairngormís Hollow) Renown 1: PCs get offers of free services, sporadic free room & board, occasional offers of marriage, or small gifts like a few chickens or a goat. Renown 2: PCs get consistent free room & board, preferential treatment by guards who overlook minor infractions, and access to special quests from Lady Nydaridien. (land deed, Calrow Ruins). Renown 3: PCs treated as villagers and brought in on village ritual practices and voting, free modest lifestyle in village, Lady Nydaridien gives free use of horses in livery stables. Renown 4: PCs receive discounts on special purchases, and are afforded the same level of respect as village elders and Lady Nydaridien herself, gain access to dryad Wyraís spellcasting service and special downtime activity involving...

So, back to the topic at hand (Sorry Morrus, replied before I saw your post to move on. I was quite ... put out about the comment I quoted and posted on to read all the replies before replying myself.). I do agree with the previous comment that I don't see how this helps build community. It might help give confidence to new people as to how to find good content, but I'm still not sure about that. IMO, good reviews and ratings, and perhaps a few trustworthy bloggers doing detailed reviews might actually help much more than this. But, at least it's something. Kudos to WotC to adapting and trying new things. They've been doing much more of this (trying new things) since the inception of 5E, and the pace is only quickening.

  • 05:00 PM - Ath-kethin mentioned Morrus in post How long have you been gaming?
My starting point was the tabletop boardgame HeroQuest, back in 1990 or '91. Then my mom bought me a copy of ICE's Middle Earth Roleplaying Game around '92 and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. In '93 my friend bought a copy of Earthdawn, and from that point I was hooked. A year and a half later I was introduced to D&D (or more specifically, AD&D 2nd Edition) and that was that. @Morrus: I've been teaching my 3-1/2 year old the basics, moving in through the old D&D cartoon and the new Tales of Equestria game (and HeroQuest), so newbies exist. It will just be a while until he can spell well enough to join ENWorld.

Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make @Morrus a Metron? @Morrus is an Organian, for sure. As for virtual gunpowder, you might want to try remodulating the transmogrifiers that govern the recplicator database. Or remove the field dampers on an EMH emitter and beam the stuff out of the holodeck. Both of those have worked for me in the past.

Okay, everyone - here's what to do. Make sure your speakers are on and open this link in another tab. Go ahead. It's nothing creepy and it's safe for work. Once you've got that going - do it! - come back here. Cool. You're back. Now imagine the scene, folks: oneshot and aramis erak on Cestus III, squaring off against one another as the Metrons look on...or, in this case, as the rest of us watch them spar over dice mechanics. I'll bring the pink and green space marshmallows (ala' the buffet in Journey to Babel) and we'll see who wins the dice mechanic stats championship grudge match. Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make Morrus a Metron?

  • 05:43 AM - Flips mentioned Morrus in post Combat Questions
Thank you all with your replies. We just thought that a mirror match would give us a "balanced" fight between two sets of combatants. I guess you are right, I had thought that Selena was more of a blaster than she really is, and seeing the retooled version give a good example of how a more "blaster" focused character would look. Although I agree with IvyMike about the adage, damage is one way that people tend to compare magical power. Morrus: I know it isn't trying to be D&D, but I know that this system is meant to be quite flexible to be able to work in many different settings. If we were trying to more accurately replace the higher magic setting, other than increasing the MP slightly, do you have any suggestions about how to rescale the damage progression? Thanks again so much. Everyone's answers have been very helpful.

For Morrus or anyone who deals with such things: In case it matters, it seems that editing the initial post in a wiki thread does not bounce the thread to the top of the thread list (by timestamp order) the same way adding a new post does. The risk here is that some wiki threads that may be often edited and-or referred to but not often posted to (e.g. the Convention List wiki in general RPG discussion) risk falling off the first page - and thus being forgotten or missed by casual or infrequent visitors - unless they are stickied. Morrus, have you checked out ZWEIHANDER Grim & Perilous RPG yet? It ticks off all of the major themes of a grim, gritty game. It even has a 35 page morally grey adventure in the core book, if you want something that can be ran quickly without a lot of preparation required. Dang. He beat me to it. I'd recommend Modos 2, which I'm trying to get into the ENWorld downloads section this month. Because: - Characters are quick to make - about as long as this post. So creation-to-play time is minimized. - Character durability runs in the teens to twenties, while the average two-handed weapon does d10 damage. - PCs have options when they run out of health. Wounds, scars, and disease are among them. So is death. - Light rules and short character sheets mean that the GM doesn't spend a lot of time turning pages, so there's less prep investment in a short campaign. - Each PC has a free-form "flaw," which can make things gritty right off the bat. Maybe they're very shy, Or in prison. Or blind. Or allergic to electronic devices. Or speak 12 languages but not English. Or busy saving the world. Or have tentacles instead of arms. I'm not sure tentacles would be much of an impediment for asking. I only use two fingers when typing (well 3, but I could get by with 2).
  • 02:31 PM - Kobold Boots quoted Morrus in post How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are?
Asking for a friend... Smart is something you do, not something you are. This is true in life as well as gaming. Exhibiting caution so you can think about something before you do it is a trait of "smart people", same with what is often called common sense. If you're talking about having more knowledge, it's a function of delaying tactics such as "let me look this up" or "I remember this story about X, let me see if I can find it or remember it." There's also a few tells regarding intellectual speed. Higher IQ (not necessarily smart) people are generally good with kibitz and word play and see connections where others see coincidence. So playing the character really has more to do with what people perceive as the illusion of "smart" and doing "smart" things, not necessarily being the highest IQ in the land. One does not guarantee the other and some of the folks with the highest intellectual capacity lack the ability to be "smart" in reality. 2c KB

  • 11:52 PM - SkidAce quoted Morrus in post New Survey
It's a different environment. Back then there were tons of news and rumours about the upcoming game to collate. In the run-up to 4E, 5E, Pathfinder 2, I did the same, and I'm sure I will for 6E if/when it ever happens. But in the middle of an edition's cycle, especially one with far fewer releases, there's just less news to talk about. At least in terms of official 5E product releases. Even so, I've scooped plenty of them ahead of time over the last few years. As for fastest - well, I updated it daily then, much like I do now, except these days we have additional columnists adding info about a wider range of games too. I'm very content with how Enworld operates. My comment was more aimed at noticing how forums have shifted to discussion and redditt/twitter are the FLASH news system. Plus as you note, the environment has certainly changed from then to now. Anyone remember dialing into their local/topical bbs system?
  • 07:10 PM - Laurefindel quoted Morrus in post How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are?
How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are? Since 3rd edition, my take is that my character is not smarter (or less smart) than me. He might have a better memory, spot details better than me, make his spells harder to resist than mine, but the character is as smart as I am. Similarly, i can decide that one of my characterís traits is having a short attention span, or having a hard time grasping complex problems, or have a preference for simpler plans, but the character wonít be less smart than I am. i encourage my players to do the same when I DM.
  • 07:07 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post New Survey
Well it take a bit longer to write an article than to copy/paste a link. :) Precisely: as the main means of receiving information, particularly with my smart phone optimized to give it to me, ENWorld's front page is a slower source. Hence, I do not use ENWrold for news, but for discussion and commentary.

It's interesting that one of the questions is "Have you ever played Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG?" -- I assume this survey is meant for a much wider audience, then. Yikes, it's a long one! I really had to reread that question a few times to make sure it actually was asking what it seemed to be asking. Especially since it was the 4th question after questions about settings, races, and classes. I mean, why else would I be taking this survey? LOL Good stuff overall, though. Who doesn't love some freebies thrown in with purchase they were going to make anyway? Thanks for posting it Jester David!

  • 11:57 PM - Brundle quoted Morrus in post How does the quality of a shield effect the defense score you get from having it equipped?
You can only ever use one skill at a time. He would have to choose between his dodging and shields skill. Your base dice pool is attribute + skill + equipment which is capped by max dice pool. Anything beyond that, exploits, modifiers, etc? All that is after. I think i have it down now, Please correct me if I am wrong. you would choose to use shield skill for defense , so you would add one for that and then 1 for high quality shield, plus the 3 for agility, for 5d6 pool. If you had 3 in shield skill and a high quality shield , Plus the 3d6 agility pool you would go to 6d6

  • 06:45 PM - Brundle quoted Morrus in post How does the quality of a shield effect the defense score you get from having it equipped?
Shield quality has no direct effect on DEFENSE. It can form part of your dice pool like any other equipment can; it uses the shields skill, and that dice pool is capped as normal. So if the pc has 6 dex for 3 pool and 1 dodge for 1 pool and 1 shield skill and a high quality shield for another pool, the total pool would be 5d6?

  • 02:45 AM - Lanefan quoted Morrus in post X & O For More Fun
It's not mind control! It's an easy way to speak up. That's it. It doesn't magically pass binding international treaties, or pass sentences in a court of law or anything. Words like "democracy" and "tyranny" are absurd hyperbole in this context. It's social interaction, not law.I was responding to Umbran , and my statements simply follow on from his use of "tyranny". And while we're on about terms, tapping a card (at least the way it's presented in the OP) is not really "speaking up"; as speaking is in fact neither involved nor - as presented - allowed to be. I couldd get behind this at least to some extent if actual speaking - as in debate, discussion, consensus, give-and-take, allowable disagreement, etc. - was an inherent part of the system. But it's not, thus making this idea both a) poorly conceived* and b) horribly open to abuse. * - as are, IME, a great many things involving non-negotiability. As soon as someone says something - be it a method of operation, a rule, a system,...

  • 01:57 AM - Reynard quoted Morrus in post Preserving the Fear Inherent in 1st Level
This is going to sound pithy, but try 2nd or 1st edition. 5E is designed around more action heroic sensibilities. I think itís less a case of altering the game to fit your style as choose the game which fits your style. There a couple reasons for trying to alter 5E to do what I want, including liking a lot of the rest of the game and the simple fact that running the current edition of the game makes it easier to find players and fill seats at cons. If I was going to switch from 5E I wouldn't bother using D&D at all, I'd go with something like WHFRP 1E.
