You're getting a percentage of the points needed to get to your next grade. You could ignore the point totals altogether and just say "one-tenth of a new grade". Everybody is essentially receiving the exact same amount - an equal fraction towards their next grade. If you base it off an average party grade (which is fine, if you prefer that), then people aren't getting the same effective gain...

3/4 level sounds fine. The thing is itís such a situational spell. In players hands itís not that great. Even against a bbeg I donít think this would be my go to spell. Against players itís scary strong. Exhaustion is actually very hard to get rid of. Using the standard array and the "default" equipment given for each class and background, you can make a 5e level 1 character in approximately 10 minutes. I can't think of getting any faster while still maintaining a sense of meaningful choice about your character. For some, the existing character options, even including multiclassing and feats, are still too small. Personally, I'd really love to...

I wasn't the one who said, "the ultimate point of character creation isnít about character custimization but instead itís about having a character you can play in game." If it is just about having "a character," then why not just do it over and over again? Make an absolute statement, and reap the rewards of pure logic. Leave yourself some wiggle room, and you can avoid such traps.

Rolling in order only creates viable characters in a statistical sense. So, while decision points are slow, in the long run it probably beats having to roll in order several times before a character is generated that doesn't die when an orc sneezes on it. It is a question of whether you front-load your time expenditure or not. I prefer to do the job right once, rather than do quick...

Fair, though as I recall, previous versions of the 5e SRD had more limited content, more akin to what's in Basic. I glanced at the license, but I didn't probe into the content yesterday. If you wanna be really picky, WotC uses version 1.0a, released in 2000. I was not confident enough that *NO OTHER* versions existed out there to assert such.

Classically - illusions are what he does. Well, again classically, there's a group of extradimensional villains from the comics called the Elementals. We have the basic question of whether they are actually here, or if they are something Mysterio cooked up for him to be a hero fighting. I don't expect other cameos of note, as they won't want to reveal who survives Avengers:...

If you want an example of a world without an open gaming license, look back historically to TSR (owner of D&D prior to Wizards of the Coast) and their positions on D&D compatible content in the early and mid-1990s -- it was an environment where they insisted that anything that included even terminology now common in the genre (such as phrases like "hit points" or "armor class") became property of...

Both 3E and 5E have had some (but not all) of their content released under it, as have many other games. One of the main purposes of the OGL, as Ryan Dancey - its architect - said: it means that D&D is here to stay. Nothing can make it go away, not even the whims of a...

*Basic* 5e was released under the OGL, which to a quick scan doesn't appear particularly different from past OGLs. Rather than changing the control by changing the OGL, they did so by limiting content in the SRD - the basic mechanics are all there, but many of the classes are missing. So, anyone can write to the system, and even do something interesting with large changes (like Mutants and...

Hold on a second. Let us be clear - with a finite, comprehensible ruleset, there *will* be some options that are better than others. Full stop. Those that like doing deep dives into rules options *will* find them. No game designer can avoid this. It follows, then, that the game can't/shouldn't be designed around preserving all the concepts for optimizers, as it is not a tractable task. ...

Let try an example to ensure we are all reading the table right. So lets assume you need a 5 or better to hit, and do an average of 10 dmg before the feat is applied. So the formula is 5.5 - .25X. So that 5.5 - .25 * 10 = 5.5 - 2.5 = 3. So this means that my average damage increases by 3. Now where I'm confused is when you defined average damage. Yeah, I just discovered that - while I ran into some documentation that said it was free on Prime if you were willing to watch commercials, perhaps that was old. Now, I must pay. *sad trombone*

There is definitely room in the market for a crunchier generic fantasy game than D&D. Thatís Pathfinderís role. It would be terrible if that went away.

They've all been like this. They are like press releases, but Fan made, and for fans of the system. It is news about what is available - not a review or critique. Sorta like cheer leading. I don't personally play Pathfinder, or own any Paizo products (not quite true I did buy a PDF of one of the bestiarys - I just can't help myself), but I find myself reading these news updates anyway. Ah, makes a lot more sense. So I was obviously too fast on the trigger. Thanks for clarifying. Morrus: see, not so hard.

  • 03:18 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Morrus in post What do you specifically want out of reviewers?
I think that Morrus in his last post listed some good reasons people read reviews. But as he alluded to in his comment regarding technical devices, people also read reviews differently depending on the type of thing being reviewed as well as the source of the review. For example, I enjoy reading literary and film criticism (reviews) in some sources even of books or movies I will never watch, because those can be an art form in and of themselves. I read it not for the interest in the subject, necessarily (although that might come) but for the skills of the writer/reviewer/critic. Another type of review is one that focuses on "technical" merit. This is best when looking at consumer products, technical products, automobiles, etc. How much memory does it have? How much horsepower? Does it get the same gas mileage as advertised? What is the fit & finish of the reviewed product? And so on. As a general rule, however, I have reached the age when I look for reviews/criticism in the following circumstanc...

...the adventure that literally involves the PCs on a train. So, well, that's my horn. Toot toot. If you want to get a fuller sense of the campaign, there are a lot of GMs who post on the E.N. Publishing forum about their campaigns. To MoutonRustique's comment, I still did all the conversions to 4e on the adventures that were written for Pathfinder. I love that 4e lets you pace fights well and create all sorts of brief threats that need to be dealt with, as opposed to 3e/PF's style of "did you save? you're totally fine with no narrative effect at all. did you fail? you may as well take a nap." (I wish 4e had not had the odd math where everything scaled so obviously for the good guys and bad guys, and I wish there hadn't been so many niche powers, feats, and magic items that clogged up the character builder. But you could run the game with just the physical books and you wouldn't be overwhelmed with options.) The best suggestion I got for ZEITGEIST encounter design came from Morrus, who insisted every power of every enemy have a short sensory description. That led to me, later in the campaign, using that description section to work in dialogue that enemies might say during the fight, to give the fights more personality. I found that often when I converted a monster from PF to 4e, I'd add some more tricks or narrative beats to its attacks, and then go back and add those to the PF version too so the Pathfinder players wouldn't miss out. Like in adventure 5, one encounter has some gremlins, which in PF just make you roll twice and take the worse result. In the 4e version, I instead tweaked the mechanic so they specifically messed with guns - if you tried to shoot at them, the gun would click but not fire, but if you stayed still and kept aiming until the start of your next turn, it would fire then. If you moved before then, the gun would go off as soon as it wasn't aligned with the gremlin. I put that same schtick into the PF version, even though it sort of goes ...

... to how every Warlock receives a Book of Shadows/Pact Weapon/Improved familiar at 3rd level. Not at a point where it would be most logical given their their relationship with their patron, but at level 3. The Rogue deals extra damage when they catch the enemy unawares or flank them to a degree no other class can. These characters are not functioning in accordance with the law that every Fighter gets followers. that every Warlock gets a pact gift, or Rogues are unique in getting a bonus to damage from an ambush regardless of how much sense it does or doesn't make. The They represent any number of events, tropes, including fate, luck, and plot contrivances that would result in the desired effect. Basically, it's a mechanic that can actually impact part of the game's narrative. They haven't been especially common in D&D as compared to many other RPGs, but they've pretty much always been there in one form or another. Hit points & saving throws are another example, and, as Morrus points out, the debates those spawned go way back (though with the reverse of the emphasis you typically get, today), not just to the early days of these forums and to UseNet and BBSs and Out on a Limb, but, apparently, to people just harassing EGG about it enough that he wrote a whole treatise on the topic of hps in the 1e DMG. ;)

I'm not entirely sure I liked the 3rd ep. Some good, bad and very bad. The Good: Yup, I agree with Morrus, this show is freaking GORGEOUS. And, it's probably the hardest SF version of Trek to date. I kinda like that they're giving it a more hard SF look. Yup, the sets are too damn dark. Grr. Hopefully that will shift later on. Michael is a badass. I do love the scene where she kicks the crap out of the convicts. Although, that being said, she's appearing to be a LOT more emotional and a lot less Vulcan in this episode. Guess it makes sense. Just a big shift in how I saw the character. The interplay between Saru and Michael. That's a great dynamic. You can tell Saru truly respects Michael but, also doesn't trust her and blames her for the death of the Captain. I realy look forward to seeing how this plays out. "Did he just shush us?" is probably the best line I've heard in a long, long time. The Bad: Ok, why did we have the prison transport scene? Three throwaway characters for Michael to put the slippers to? Curly Haired Barklay - come on. Massive alle...

  • 06:34 PM - Leatherhead mentioned Morrus in post Does a D&D Videogame have to be turn-based?
I am also playing Divinity 2 at the moment, it's rather fun. But if you are interested in a totally different kind of RPG that also does turn based combat extremely well: Consider playing the Mario & Luigi rpg games. In particular, the "action command" system is something worth poaching. I have also heard good things about Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, of all things (which itself borrows heavily from the xcom series, a turn based tactical game). Also Morrus The turns were intended to be "behind the scenes" but there was a setting you could change to make the game auto-pause.

  • 06:23 PM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Arena map for Nalaam
I'd talked with Morrus a few times about creating a map pack zip file with the highest resolution files of all the maps and selling it for a couple bucks on RPGNow, but we designed the maps to be in a book, not printed at scale for tabletop play. I'm not sure it'd be worth the hassle. Do you have a map in mind in particular?

  • 06:19 AM - Satyrn mentioned Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
If you're going to make firearms deal the same damage as archaic weapons, why even have firearms at all? That kind of defeats the point doesn't it? Aye. That's rather the heart of my question. If his players are cool with a rifle being as deadly as a sword, as Morrus seems to suggest he would be, then making them equal would work. But if it rubs them wrong, as it does you, then it would be a poor fix. Akthough, in thinking of a reply to your question, I've had another thought, an addition to my earlier suggestion. What I suggest the OP do is this: Have rifles deal longbow damage and pistols deal shortbow damage, as I already said, and then lower the damage on all archaic weapons by a die size. Call the whole thing a new game, 5e Modern, and pretend this is the way the game universe always was - meant to model action movies and cop shows where the protagonists are shot at constantly and survive the most ludicrous barrages of gunfire, from gattling guns, helicopters and all manner of that sort.

  • 01:38 AM - Jester David mentioned Morrus in post D&D 5e nearing 800,000 copies sold?
I was under the impression that AD&D numbers in the heyday of the 80's rpg craze were in the low millions, but maybe that was over the whole life of 1e. Or maybe, I'm just pulling those numbers out of my hat. As Morrus says, it was very possibly in that range. But TSR was notoriously bad with its figures, and so it's hard to say. Very likely it's still below the peak of 1984, but it's close enough that in a year or two it could pass 1e...

Morrus, does Trailseeker include the compilations of the ZEITGEIST adventures? I never thought to check since I wasn't handling that subscription. But sadly no, we never had a specific list of changes between individual adventures and the hardcovers. Most of the changes were minor, and none happen after adventure 6, I think.

  • 01:27 PM - Kryx mentioned Morrus in post D&D Promises to Make the Game More Queer
It's not a double standard, because you are comparing two different things. The reverse of "I'm gay and you must accept me" is not "I'm anti-gay and you must accept me", it's "I'm straight and you must accept me". And guess what? People do accept straight people! There are no anti-straight marches. "I object to your existence" is not the equivalent to "I exist", and the two should never be compared to each other. I really admire your stance on this issue. It's great to see a community leader take such a stance. This hobby, like the world as a whole, has no room for homophobia. While many in this thread will claim "Oh, I'm not homophobic" we've all seen their words that dance around the issue, but we know what is truly meant. Thanks again for standing up against hate Morrus.

The replication is what makes it spread like a virus, making the coverage get exponentially faster. Like that doubling the grains of rice on a chessboard thing ó but even more so, because each makes a few dozen copies rather than just one. Oh, I understand that. However, if you're a race that is that advanced, aging if it was ever a problem to begin with, has probably been conquered. If imperfect replication is going to be an issue, slow it down a bit. Time is on your side. :)

  • 03:17 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post Has WotC saturated the published adventure market or are the two latest adventures not very popular?
It does feel like a sudden genera narrative reversal from fans! 2 books wasnít enough, but 4 is too much. I guess the target is very specifically 3 books then? :) It makes sense in light of WotC previous statements that three a year was chosen because their market research showed it to be ideal for customers. Given that, it isn't odd that people who are happy with that pace might get weary of a faster pace.

I guess the target is very specifically 3 books then? :) The Holy Number shall be 3. 2 is right out unless followed by 3. Thou shall pull forth thy billfold and count on to Wotc the number of 49 dollars for it is a holy number. Then thou shall raid thy neighbors piggy bag for the holy number of 4 pennies, 3 quarters, 2 nickels, and 1 dime. Thou shall enjoy thy hardcover or thou shall be banished from the community to play Candyland with thou younger cousins for the rest of thy holidays.
  • 02:23 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
The ďour knowledge of the universe is incomplete, therefore you may not assert anythingĒ is pretty much a conversation ender. If we canít assert anything, whatís the point of even talking? I feel like it must be a logical fallacy, too, but Iím not familiar enough with all the common fallacies to say for sure. Closely followed by ďscientists sometimes revise their hypotheses, so scientists canít assert anythingĒ. Which you also used. Theyíre both largely nothing-statements. :) I'm not saying we can't assert anything. I'm just saying that we should be qualifying our assertions with at least a "At our current level of understanding X is/isn't possible.", rather than just declaring something impossible.

  • 02:33 AM - D1Tremere quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
It has occurred on 100% of all planets that we know of that contain life. So right now, itís looking very probable! It has occurred on 100% of the planets that we know of which contain life, but that unfortunately makes for a sample size of 1, which isn't very useful for predicting anything. Also, it has only happened here once that we are aware of, and only in a small window of time. We could be an unstable evolutionary track. One thing that makes the conversation more difficult is the complexity of the definition of intelligence. What is often referred to as one thing has become increasingly a matter of multiple constructs. What we usually seem to be talking about is abstract thought, coupled with impulse control and object permanence. Creatures that can recognize themselves as distinct beings, relate a concept in their mind with real world counterparts, and delay gratification based on such internal processes.

Basically a blanket +2 stackable SOAK. Ah, OK. It should probably have the word "natural" taken out of its text then, since that word is otherwise used to mean "doesn't stack with real armor". If it just said "you gain +2 SOAK" (like the N.O.W. version of Alcoholic does), it would be a lot clearer.

Back on subject Yeah, itís brilliant at what it focused on. Best take on D&D combat across all editions. Hereís what I do - put those things [auras, force movement, shifting] in terrain features. That way, even as enemies drop you donít lose combos or stuff that drives the action."[/HQ] This reminded me of my idea of downed allies inspiring their friends in ( LazyLord / Princes Build Warlord ) fashion to help preserve the action economy even if the players get a set back and have their character Technically out of the fight. Where you inspire your ally to a moment of berserk and extra attacks or to rush across the battlefield and so on. In effect the player of the downed character gets to hand out his characters action economy LOL.
  • 02:19 AM - Mercador quoted Morrus in post Today's The Last Day Of Voting For The Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2019!
After a bit more research, it doesn't look like Cyberpunk 2077 is actually a thing. While "most anticipated" isn't a guarantee (as TrippyHippy said), it still has to be an actual game in development, and this is more a "we might make one, but no news yet". I'll probably remove it from the poll for that reason. Thanks for the clarification. I remember that there was rumors about that but nothing really serious. I guess they'll see if Witcher3 RPG book will sell or not. I would like a new Cyberpunk book (moreover that I lost my 2020 book around 20 years ago), I can't stand magic in scifi setting (ŗ la Shadowrun).

Lots of weird rumours circling around right now, but there always are. I don't believe any of it. IMO, the rumour mill's been doing quite well recently - predicted the move to Sundays, the drop to 10 episodes, and the move of the Christmas episode. But I guess we'll see. https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/jodie-whittaker-chris-chibnall-rumored-leave-doctor-2019/ I would be sorry to see Whittaker go. Chibnall not so much. That said, I'm increasingly convinced Douglas Adams had it right all those years ago - go for one really good series, and then out. Both RTD and SM seemed to be increasingly running on empty near the end of their tenures as show-runner.

  • 10:34 PM - Steven Barker quoted Morrus in post WOIN Trait Tier List
You can use skills with any attribute as long as the GM agrees, so intimidation and Disfigured would be a good combo for a strong character. A STR (intimidation) check with the disfigured trait would be a good combo. While I certainly agree that it should be possible to intimidate with your strength, the way tests are written in the rules are for the GM to ask for a specific attribute to be tested, and then the player can suggest an applicable skill to combine with it. It's not really clear that a player can suggest testing a different attribute (though of course the GM can allow anything they want).

I get 10 items. However, 9 of them say "You have reached a page with Adult Content filtered from view. If you wish to view this content, you must log in and modify your account information" Weird. I don't get this notice at all, though I do remember seeing it before with this publisher.

I often think it's too easy to get into the TARDIS. A TARDIS is supposed to be the most advanced type of ship in the universe, so teleporting onto it shouldn't be easy. I wonder if she gave Kerblam! permissions or something? I assume that if she made that order, then some level or permissions were granted. I mean if I can give Amazon access to my door, I expect the far-future tech can do something similar.
