There's a range of different campaign management tools available; some free, some not so. RPG Encounters is a free web app designed to work with and sync between all your devices. I hadn't heard of it before, but the creator sent me a hand-written letter to tell me about it, so I could hardly not take a look! The app currently works with four game systems: D&D 5E, Savage Worlds, Stars...

True, though I expect you'll find there's some aspects that are, while not ubiquitous, are very common. There are styles that exist through large swaths of the gaming community that most of us an recognize. The argument arises because media consumption sets expectations. And if you have your expectations set by behavior that actually has different goals than the folks at your table, that's a...

There was a time, way back when, that the group I played with did declarations. But, that was back in 1e, and quite frankly, too many times for both PC and NPC that led to nonsensical dud actions. Most games these days don't have declaration like that as part of their design these days.

I would not advise any new writer to accept less than 3c/w. And that’s really basement rate pay. Accepting less than that normalises it. Editing is a separate job, paid similarly per word. And yes, payment upon acceptance is appropriate. Good call on that! :)

While gamers will remember him as the writer for the Origins award-winning Masks of Nyarlathotep or T&T's The Isle of Darksmoke, he also wrote for Fat Albert, two He-Man shows, She-Ra (which he created), Beast...

If you publish on DMsG, you grant a perpetual license to others, including WotC, to use your work. Artwork, I believe, is excepted. While this doesn’t transfer the copyright, you are also prevented from publishing the work elsewhere. In addition, you pay 50% royalties. In exchange, you get access to some of WotC’s settings and other IP, including art assets. If you want to publish in the...

The GM should always be free to say that something doesn’t apply. That said, think of it like comic books - people die all the time only to come back later. The only limit is a (semi) plausible reason. For the other question, it’s not really the number of exploits which makes something powerful. It how they combine. A thousand abilities gives a PC lots of versatility throughout any encounters...

To be clear - the action/rescue scene can be totally improv, no problem. I do run a lot of GUMSHOE, as the main game I run at home is Ashen Stars - and there what I plot out is the mystery. Folks tend to overestimate their ability to create a sensible mystery by improv - when you just make up mystery elements on the fly, without time to *think* about how they fit together, you tend to have plot...

You could easily argue the opposite, that you shouldn’t strengthen the spell because of the wording. Others have noted that the core of the spell seems to be “losing a turn”. Anything that goes beyond that should be carefully considered, especially because the spell does have some “harm protection” built in

Man, I’d buy an RPG if *you* wrote one with even less information! I mean, maybe I’m too much of a sucker for marketing. Certainly possible. But I *do* buy RPGs because they’re associated with a property I like. I have multiple Star Wars and Star Trek RPGs! I don’t know if that’s common or unusual. From my experience selling the Judge Dredd game, Dredd is the draw, not the system or me.

We all assume that if they publish a game, they will shift their show to *use* the game. D&D players will no longer have a particular reason to take in their show, and the show won't be an advertisement for D&D. Which means effectively breaking the mutual-marketing relationship between them. That's what would get "blown up". The real question isn't whether they can publish a game. The...

I think it’s interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didn’t, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world.

What the hell was that? If you want to make mean-spirited comments about the appearance of other people, find some other platform to do it.

Monte Cook Games' 5E "Science Fantasy Sourcebook", Arcana of the Ancients, has launched on Kickstarter. "Arcana of the Ancients is a sourcebook for 5th edition players and GMs to bring the wonders of mysterious technology and weird science-fantasy elements to their traditional fantasy campaigns. Designed by Monte Cook, Bruce R. Cordell, and Sean K. Reynolds, all of whom have years of...

Agreed. The reason most fantasy world is basically, "real-world, with individuals who can produce special effects," is to allow the player's life-experience-trained intuition to hold sway most of the time. Well, we should note a couple of things. Quantum mechanics and relativity came by when they did because our basic technology started being able to measure things *outside* the...

I think you've been clear about that. The issue isn't that you are unclear. The issue is that several folks here think you are *simply wrong*. And... so... what do you want? Again, I think you've been clear. The issue here isn't that you are unclear, but that folks *do not agree with your points*. So again - Every communication has some (occasionally implicit) purpose, and...

Or not, as their world has magic, and ours doesn't. Their experiences of their world could be very different than ours. In most works, they are not, but every once in a while, a writer goes deep, and brings up some truly weird stuff. D&Disms work fine, if you include parts of old D&D cosmology - the elemental planes, and the positive and negative energy planes, and say, "Arcane magic is...

CleverNickName are very awesome for doing this. I was trying to do big math and guessed that they would bring in half the previous day for a number of days before the people dried up and then half again for the rest of the days, but could not get that far. I was thinking around 12 million, but don't want to be cheap and jump on Morrus and bet $1 higher. I'm going to go big and say $23,500,000

  • 12:36 AM - Carmen Sbordone mentioned Morrus in post The New D&D Book Is Called "Ghosts of Saltmarsh" [UPDATED!]
No evidence here that this book will not be equally Greyhawk focused as the original modules (more, quite possibly). Mike Mearls was just talking about Greyhawk and how he wants to get a Greyhawk product into the world on Dragon Talk a couple weeks ago. Relax. Pattern of behavior of taking items out of greyhawk to FR ToEE and ToH moved out of greyhawk into realms. So its very possible it will happen again. Morrus. Thanks for starting to understand. Greyhawk is important to more then a few. And love to see it fly again.

  • 02:19 AM - ClaytonCross mentioned Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
This phenomenon of people quoting D&D Beyond stats to prove points happens the most right after they post some of their data. Those posts and threads are months old at this point and so I'm not going to dig them up. However, there's been comments about their data in more recent threads, but it's not important enough to go digging through pages and pages of comments looking for the proverbial needle in the haystick that I know is there (because I've recently read it) just to prove you wrong. Instead I'll give you one current example. The example: @Morrus did. It's still on the front page of this forum and shows in the thread title: "90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels" People also use invalid math to prove points. Example: "Average DPR with % hit", we have talked about it before that this is not an acute representation of actual game play damage being that average DPR is only correct about 3% of the time for any specific battle, does not account for 0 sum damage on miss, or loss of damage from over kill... however, I don't have a better metric for measuring damage. So I use it too sometimes to prove a point as do you. The same is true for D&D Beyond data. As @Morrus pointed out... We don’t need data at all. Sometimes they share stuff as a conversation point. And it’s fun to talk about. But we don’t need it. It’s just an excuse for us all to flap our lips You are correct that 1. It will be used to argue and 2. it is not accurate... However, when it agrees with an argument anyone is likel...

LOL, I love the n00b insult at the end. It's very entertaining! :) Yes which proves his point in that if post are a measure of validity Morrus's 39,521 post to your 3,940 posts would make you a n00b and irrelevant if we are calling that a valid maker of knowledge base. Which we are not. So while your one of the more interesting posters to read you do have a tendency to get a bit dismissive of posters based on off point arguments like posts. I still came to your thread because you make interesting discussion and I heard you. I have even posted a on the D&D Beyond feature requests asking for player inactive characters tags and a statement on slides listing the day delimiter so as we read slides we have a beater representation of what the slide is depicting. That said, questioning the validity of one someone says based on how much they said instead of the content of their argument makes you look bad, instead of making them look unqualified. If your going to say the statement was in jest... their is no indication in the text of the post that implies that and the person your posting to does not know you well enough to infer that ...

  • 06:33 PM - FrogReaver mentioned Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
... They already have a method to account for that, which gives an even better data set than the question you proposed: When the Data says "Active Characters" it means they have controlled for characters who haven't been updated in the past X days. It doesn't matter if the character is meant to be an NPC or PC, it just maters if someone is actually going back to update it, all other characters are considered to be abandoned or a test character. Morrus has claimed multiple times that the charts represent all characters created and even includes the ones not necessarily played. I'd lean toward him being correct on this but maybe not?

  • 11:43 PM - Slit518 quoted Morrus in post [D&D 5e] Terry Herc Tomes seeking freelance writers
I would not advise any new writer to accept less than 3c/w. And that’s really basement rate pay. Accepting less than that normalises it. Editing is a separate job, paid similarly per word. And yes, payment upon acceptance is appropriate. Good call on that! :) Morrus, luckily as individuals we can decide if we want to work for that type of work for hire. Now, personally I see 1 cent a word as low, and that is only $5 for a 500 word piece, BUT, if you are a person without any formal credits to your name, are struggling to get into the industry, and other folks see this as a serious publication, then you most certainly will do it for the credit. Is Terry Herc Tomes an actual 3rd party company, or are they new up and comers? Even new publishers need to start somewhere, and can't always pay out the big bucks like Paizo or WotC. I am not sure what 3rd party publishers like Kobold Press or Green Frog Games pay per word.

  • 06:21 PM - Reynard quoted Morrus in post Tell me About Creating for DMs Guild
If you publish on DMsG, you grant a perpetual license to others, including WotC, to use your work. Artwork, I believe, is excepted. While this doesn’t transfer the copyright, you are also prevented from publishing the work elsewhere. In addition, you pay 50% royalties. In exchange, you get access to some of WotC’s settings and other IP, including art assets. If you want to publish in the Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Ravenloft, or Ravnica, or to use trademarks like “D&D”, DMsG is your only option. Thanks. So for a generic adventure that does not use WotC IP, normal OGL publishing is probably preferable, especially if I care about maintaining rights?
  • 11:04 AM - umbergerba quoted Morrus in post Updated, Searchable, 5E SRD in Markdown Format!
The D&D logo, name, art, etc. aren’t OGL. You should probably remove those from the front page of the website if you’re using the OGL. Actually, by permission, the website utilizes official material, images etc. from the Wizard's Fan Site Kit, as it clearly states on the bottom of the home page. Wizard’s created the kit just for this purpose.

  • 12:23 AM - Azzy quoted Morrus in post GameHole Con Hints At An "As Yet Unannounced Setting" for D&D This Year
He said “setting” not “Campaign Setting” with Capital Letters. As in a place where the story is set. He could have meant it in the context of a world-spanning campaign setting like Greyhawk; he could be talking about a single town or dungeon like Waterdeep. We just don’t know how he uses the term; all we know is how each of us uses the term. He’s probably enjoying reading us all pouring over his words and trying to guess what he meant though. :) This is how religions start. :D

  • 11:07 PM - Nickolaidas quoted Morrus in post GameHole Con Hints At An "As Yet Unannounced Setting" for D&D This Year
Well, to you, perhaps. But the question is what does a “setting” count as to Thomas Valley? A Campaign Setting was always considered to be a 'world' in D&D, as far as I know. If Valley considers the term to encompass a mere region of a world, then Tomb of Annihilation was a Setting book, since Chult wasn't included in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide.

  • 12:22 AM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Could Critical Role launch their own RPG?
Or when Green Ronin released M&M and AGE, and then still worked with WotC? Or Sasquatch did similar? Sasquatch and Kobold Press never did their own game system, just 3rd Party stuff. Yes, WotC did work with Green Ronin, but it's not like there were many of other options for people who could do the job and do it on time. And it's not like they tapped Paizo to make one of their 5e Adventure books. Plus, have you seen anyone from Green Ronin or Sasquatch Games or even Kobold Press at their media events? Or Monte Cook who left WotC and then came back for 5E and then left again?WotC doesn’t refuse to work with companies who release other books. Staff are different. It's too small an industry for them to hold grudges like that. I can name a couple former Paizo employees who worked on Pathfinder, left, and found work on 5e. And even during the height of the 4e vs PF edition wars, that was always the fans: the companies never talked smack or called out their competition. WotC was sil...

Oh I get drawn in by IP all the time. AiME/TOR, Conan, Dragon age, etc.

How does writing a book “blow up” their relationship with WotC? Their relationship is not that precarious (unless you know something the rest of us don’t). Well.... rather than being a source of free advertising, they’d be the competition literally costing WotC money and players. And D&D Beyond, which has sponsored them for a year in a mutually beneficial relationship, would have no reason to do so. And the DnD Twitch stream would have little reason to host their channel on its stream, and would likely put on competitive programming. They might still be on friendly terms. But they wouldn’t be incentivized to work together. And WotC might focus on partnerships with other streamers or their own media personalities. Y’know, like when Paizo went from supporting D&D by publishing magazines and then doing 3rd Party adventures, to being the competition with the Pathfinder RPG.

I don’t know the answer to any of those questions. I know they made a campaign setting, so they have some design chops. Whether that would translate to a full game, I don’t know. They have a great relationship with Green Ronin and various designers who published the campaign setting. I don’t even know if they’d *want* to do something like that. All I really know for sure is that if they did, I’d buy it. I don't partake of Critical Role. I know it is very popular, but I don't really feel compelled to watch other people playing games. And I'm a big fan of Star Trek and Wars, but I don't buy their RPGs just 'cause they are associated with a property I like. I look at what you said there and think... you don't know who writes it, or what genre it is in, or what kind of rules they use - all you have is, essentially, a marketing connection to Critical Role, and that will bring you to buy it? I don't buy any game on so little information, so I don't understand the enthusiasm.
  • 07:40 PM - Dausuul quoted Morrus in post Could Critical Role launch their own RPG?
I haven’t said anything about changing their show. I wondered if they could publish an RPG. Okay. So, let us say they publish an RPG. The options here are: They don't change the show. In that case, they could publish an RPG, and it would not hurt them particularly, but it would also be kind of a pointless exercise. How are they going to sell it if they are not themselves willing to play it? They do change the show. In that case, they have blown up their relationship with WotC, which was based on them playing Dungeons and Dragons. See the last 8 pages of replies for further details on why this is unlikely to turn out well. Clearly you strongly feel the answer to that question is “no”. That would be an obviously wrong answer, because of course they could. Anybody could publish an RPG. Taken literally, the answer to your question is a trivial yes. My answer is, "They could, but it would be a poor use of their time and a lousy business idea."

How does writing a book “blow up” their relationship with WotC? Their relationship is not that precarious (unless you know something the rest of us don’t). The question is whether they can develop, write, test, and publish a *good* game. Then, who is "they"? The people sitting at the table during the shows? Do they have particular chops in game design? If it isn't them, in person, then it is more like, "Can Critical Role glom onto some game designer(s), and promote a purpose-built game for the show?"
