You could try making the actual ship battle a narrative background element while the PCs themselves do something important in the battle. Maybe they have to board the enemy ship and get something while the cannonballs rain down and enemy sailors battle them in the lower decks.

I will generally just miss a show entirely, rather than commit piracy. Yeah. It then starts getting to having to pay close attention to each service and ask whether you're really getting enough content from them to justify the expense. CBS All Access is a fine example. I haven't watched any of Discovery, because it is not worth it to me to pay for a single show that gets mixed reviews.

Netflix and Hulu carrying other people's content made sense when streaming services were new, and the content creators didn't want to be in the business of streaming. Magic in WOIN is much more low-magic than the super-high magic of D&D. If you wanted to replicate D&D's magical prevalence and availability, you'd need to reduce the MP cost of magic in general across the board.

If you are a troll, or otherwise not in the dialogue in good faith, we don't need to tolerate your position. Yes, you are closer to death, but you are starting to pull out the stops, and capable of greater feats. I find a good example in FATE based games, in which you can take Consequences instead of taking stress boxes. The stress boxes can take you out of the game, the consequences make doing...

The acid blood isn't meant to be a strong combat ability. If an ogre was dealing significant amounts of damage to foes every time it was hit, it would be very overpowered. It'll hurt maybe a peasant, but not a hero. Mooks are vulnerable to such things as they die with one hit.

There's an interesting bit of human psychology. If you have a resource, and are unlikely to get more of it, you hoard that resource. You never use it, because if you do, then you won't have it at that critical time. But then since you aren't in the habit of using it... you forget about it, and don't use it when you really should. So, you wind up with a chicken and egg thing - if the GM...

Printed, probably about 100 - I have periodically purged over the years, donating to good friends especially for books I haven't cracked open in 5 years or more. Digitally, I literally have thousands and thousands -- collective worth however is quite different because a lot of them I've picked up on Humble Bundles, Bundles of Holding, charity sales, etc. and I might have thousands of books which...

This pretty much fits me as well. In my case, it's about 75%/25% first person/third person, I prefer first person, but there are times where either I'm at a loss for specific words (I suck at seducing NPCs, I got no game ;)) or intent needs to be clearer.

It rose from the depths of a dozen years and more.... I switch back and forth, and it depends on context. In live-action play, it is mostly 1st person. At a tabletop, I try for mostly 1st person in in depicting the character's speech, and a mix when depicting action. Often enough there's a need to differentiate between the Character and the player, and then it is 3rd person - GM: "Are you...

And, surprising nobody, The Punisher and Jessica Jones are also now both cancelled. To clarify - Jessica Jones is ending after its third season airs. Which is nice. I dunno if they have a chance to somehow put a bow on the end of it.

So far, I've seen an ancestral guardian Barbarian, a Swashbuckler Rogue, A Hex blade warlock, and a Divine Soul Sorcerer. Of all of these, the Divine Soul was the most lackluster - but I think this has as much to do with the Sorcerer being slightly too short on spells known as anything. All subclasses I've seen so far live up to the other choices in the PH, and I haven't seen any that are just...

Thank you all with your replies. We just thought that a mirror match would give us a "balanced" fight between two sets of combatants. I guess you are right, I had thought that Selena was more of a blaster than she really is, and seeing the retooled version give a good example of how a more "blaster" focused character would look. Although I agree with IvyMike about the adage, damage is one way that people tend to compare magical power. Morrus: I know it isn't trying to be D&D, but I know that this system is meant to be quite flexible to be able to work in many different settings. If we were trying to more accurately replace the higher magic setting, other than increasing the MP slightly, do you have any suggestions about how to rescale the damage progression? Thanks again so much. Everyone's answers have been very helpful.

For Morrus or anyone who deals with such things: In case it matters, it seems that editing the initial post in a wiki thread does not bounce the thread to the top of the thread list (by timestamp order) the same way adding a new post does. The risk here is that some wiki threads that may be often edited and-or referred to but not often posted to (e.g. the Convention List wiki in general RPG discussion) risk falling off the first page - and thus being forgotten or missed by casual or infrequent visitors - unless they are stickied. • 04:12 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post What system would you use for gritty fantasy?
Morrus, have you checked out ZWEIHANDER Grim & Perilous RPG yet? It ticks off all of the major themes of a grim, gritty game. It even has a 35 page morally grey adventure in the core book, if you want something that can be ran quickly without a lot of preparation required. Dang. He beat me to it. I'd recommend Modos 2, which I'm trying to get into the ENWorld downloads section this month. Because: - Characters are quick to make - about as long as this post. So creation-to-play time is minimized. - Character durability runs in the teens to twenties, while the average two-handed weapon does d10 damage. - PCs have options when they run out of health. Wounds, scars, and disease are among them. So is death. - Light rules and short character sheets mean that the GM doesn't spend a lot of time turning pages, so there's less prep investment in a short campaign. - Each PC has a free-form "flaw," which can make things gritty right off the bat. Notes to Morrus: I'm assuming "gritty" m...

  • 01:39 AM - Mercurius mentioned Morrus in post Mike Mearls “…it’s now obvious how to live without Bonus Actions”' And 6th Edition When Players Ask For It!
I really wouldn't worry about a new edition coming out anytime soon, and I don't think anything's "in the air" (naught Morrus). BUT...while I haven't worked in game design, I imagine that as soon as you publish a new edition, you start a new folder called "Ideas for the Next Edition," and that over three plus years, things start adding up. So if you're Mearls, of course you're thinking about the next edition, at least on the back burner. But there are a lot of steps between here and there, like the alleged Unearthed Arcana book, for one. I could see something like: 2014: 5E core rules 2017/18: first expansion - planes/psionics/odds and ends 2021/22: second expansion - epic play 2024: 50th Anniversary Edition

  • 01:39 AM - LordEntrails mentioned Morrus in post Actions in starship combat for those with no useful skills
It sounds like several of you are trying to disagree with me, but are actually saying something similar to what I'm saying; ... Now, that doesn't mean someone who is an expert in piloting or gunnery couldn't do it better. They would know advanced options or routines that the opposing computer would be using and how to compensate for that, but such would not be required to atleast be moderately effective... Remember, Morrus was basically asking how can PC's feel useful on a starship if they don't have starship skills; What self actions can you think of for characters who have no useful skills in starship combat? They have no engineering or medical or piloting or gunnery or computers or sensors etc. skills -- but you want the player to feel involved ... In short, there is no reason a PC can't do something useful on a starship, they just won't be able to do it as well as an expert. So, from a play perspective, all the characters (assuming the ship have enough systems) can do something interesting. Saying you can't man the laser canon unless you have a gunnery skill, can't work damage control unless you are an engineer, can't pilot the ship etc is a poorly designed system (imo).

So, realllyyy strange issue. I am having trouble with the ENWorld app and well, my identity. I have started getting notifications to my iPad as if I was Morrus. Yah, you read that right. I keep getting multiple "you maxed out your attempts at signing in" notifications to my email address when I should just be signed in to the app and am not attempting to sign in at all. Now I am getting notifications about people liking and quoting my fabulous posts - in threads which I have not posted at all - or even visited. After some investigation, the posts referenced are Morrus'. Then today I went to check out my profile and while my name is at the top, Morrus info comes up. Uhh...... I love my friend and all but he sure does get a lot of notifications!! HELP!!! edit: Apologies for the huge pics!!!! :erm: edit edit: ENW seems fine on my desktop. • 02:29 AM - Quickleaf mentioned Morrus in post Mike Mearls' AMA Summary
Thanks for organizing and recording everything Morrus! I was really interesting by Mike's comments on making a newbie-friendly dungeon crawl balancing structure and flow-of-play. Definitely an area, like initiative, where there's lots of room for experimentation! What is something you have tried putting in the game, but could never find the right mechanics to make it work? I'd love to find a way to manage a dungeon crawl that's very newbie friendly, that provides enough structure to give new DMs the confidence to run the game, but that doesn't become a set of rules that devolves into playing the rules, rather than playing the game. Basically, a framework for the game that gives DMs a little more creative support without replacing the DM's creativity. It's a narrow path to walk. The rules for exploration in 5e are fine, but I think they're too much of a bother for experienced DMs and too mechanistic for newbies to really benefit from them.

  • 04:02 PM - Desh-Rae-Halra mentioned Morrus in post Meet a Professional Game Master
Dragonblade I feel ya.I was bringing extra delicious community snacks in hopes of the DM actually reading the module before we started... Celebrim: $80 per player per session? What exactly does the player get for that? For $80, I better get to sit in a nice new leather recliner, there better be someone working an omelette station that has plenty of bacon, and I players get a handy as a consolation if they fail a saving throw for starters... Seriously, if you are spending 60 hours to run a 4 hour session, something needs to be adjusted. What would the player get for $80 besides you knowing the rules and being prepared? Morrus I disagree. Mercer and Perkins are different in that their players are not paying them to run games, they are running games to promote their channel (Mercer) or a brand (D&D). They are getting paid by others ( to view, to increase sales, etc). I suppose we can say they are Professional Game Masters, but this doesn't seem the same as the dude who is just charging to run a game. They are more like Professional Game Promoters who do so through the DM role.

Of course, it only takes a generation for the universe's population to double again. Thanos has only set it back by a few years. I'm not sure about that. Many species grow based on available food - but having killed half the life in the universe that means that anything that consumes life (plants, animals, etc.) will find their food supplies similarly shrunk. (Predators also are a big factor, but the ratio of predators to prey has remained the same.) Sentients can decided to breed quickly, and to change their environment (plant more, etc.). They can impact the speed.

But... that’s the exact opposite of a surprise. Not entirely. It was a surprise going into the movie. But once the movie started heading slightly in that direction, I was genuinely excited at what they might do. Instead, as stated above, they were just yanking our chains a bit. And that's exactly my problem with all this. It is very easy to "yank the audience's chains", and to have people mistake that for being an unexpected twist. But it takes effort to actually write a satisfying plot. It felt like the movie went out of its way to constantly yank those chains, and then have no satisfying resolution to it. So, informally, just about everyone I know that dislikes this movie has been a fan of the pre-Disney EU. I wasn't, and I like TLJ. I wonder how widespread this is, given that the movie was pretty well received outside of a smallish and loud core of die-hard SW fandom. I consider myself a pretty big Starwars fan. I loved the original trilogy, hated the prequels, loved TFA, and hated ...

I have never even heard of that error message.... this is so far above my pay grade. Not a clue. It's probably a wordier version of the reported ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_LOCATION. That error says there are multiple HTML headers in the document which is a big no-no so as to prevent a type of injection attack. Originally, I thought Kiraya_TiDrekan's set up was probably to blame because it was a single user complaining. It may be the showwiki.php is missing an exit() after the redirect, it may be the formatting is slightly off -- the browsers are getting more strict with their parsing.
  • 01:28 AM - Imaculata quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Huh? It would have surprised you if they did the thing you were expecting? It would have surprised me if they had done what I were hoping they would do at that moment. Instead they kind of flirt with a cool premise, and abandon it. Subverting audience expectations isn't always a good thing, if the turn sucks.

Sorry to break it to you, but it’s fine on the app. The problems you are experiencing are due to the very large number of people who have blocked you, and the resultant thread ID changes. As a fix, I suggest you stop getting blocked. That came out of nowhere. Why the hostile response? I volunteered a reply to the OP - and yourself - in the belief I was helpful. If you don't want regular forum users to reply to meta questions, maybe then not solicit the input? Plus, no posts are blocked when using the app, so your testy reply not only feels unprovoked but also hard to understand. :(

You are confusing media sound bytes and analogies with physics and wondering why it doesn’t work in your head. Physicists use equations and stuff. If you want to point out the flaws in physics, you need to show where the equations are wrong. Not where you heard some “ironic claim” about something. I mean, yeah, sure go up to a particle physicist and tell them how “ironic” you find their “claims”. But be prepared to explain their “claims” (read: their life’s work) first. But that is not true though. What is Dark Matter and Dark Energy? Do you have a particle physicist prepared to put their "lifes work" up as a scientific Theory. No, I think I will stick to what real particle physicists say which is, forgive my paraphrasing, that they dont know.

As I said earlier, this is just a conversation/ending nothing statement. Sure. By definition, we can’t know anything for certain ever. So what? We talk using what we know, or we all just stop talking about anything ever. What’s the fun in that? It's fine to talk using what we know, but when we are using it to stop reasonable speculation about the future tech in a thread that's about speculation about future tech, that's not very fun, either. :)
  • 02:25 AM - Quickleaf quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
Man, tough crowd! Hah! Indeed. I think the desert scenes part of that "Croaking Sirroco" mockup were well put together. I like how there's a sense of flow, narrative progression, and unveiling secrets there. That part works well. I do feel conflicted about listing ability/skill checks and DCs and damage amounts when your space is so limited, however. If it's meant to be adaptable for a wider level range, that seems like something you can trust the DM to handle. Might free up a little space for you to work with.

  • 06:54 PM - Quickleaf quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
This is kinda how it looks with little coloured icons showing the challenge level of each encounter, but I feel it now starts to look quite messy. 103400 For me personally, it feels busy, angled text is harder to read, and would murder printer ink, echoing what 77IM was saying. It could be the low-res, but the bolded text could be even bolder to differentiate it; it feels like a semi-bold, and I'm having to look carefully/squint to recognize it as different...actually I think the color backgrounds are contributing to making that differentiation harder. I think the skeleton of something workable is there, however. It also reads like an site-in-which-adventure-could-happen rather than an adventure, in that there's no hook for the players. I get the aesthetic "let the DM fill in the blanks", but having a starting point, having a clearly framed start scene, saves the DM a lot of work.

  • 11:25 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
It’s not “only” theory. We use relativity in all sorts of things. Your GPS depends on it; GPS satellites are subject to relativistic effects due to the speed they move and their altitude in Earth’s gravity well. The word “theory” in science doesn’t mean “hypothesis”. I know but say 150 year ago science as it understood it probably could not conceive of an atomic weapon. In 100 years who knows, there are quantum physics theories that might pan out, someone might invent a fusion reactor (not that it will produce enough energy for FTL). There is anti matter and tachyons and things like that and some combination of genetic engineering, AI, generations ships, gene seed ships, and a new power source could enable something. It might take years to get there but interstellar travel might be possible one day (slowly barring some sort of massive breakthrough). The could invent a fusion reactor, stick it in a problem send said probes towards some close stars, they broadcast back any habitable planets,...

The word “theory” in science doesn’t mean “hypothesis”.Yes, please tell the electrical engineer 5hat actually does GPS systems how important relativity is to technology. I'm not ignorant of how useful relativity is, or what it's theoretical underpinnings are. But, Newtonian mechanics were absolutely critical to a lot of technological advancements and we now know them to be wrong but useful. Assuming we're at the end of science is wrong -- we do not know.

The crash was in 2013. You’re off by over a decade! :) But yeah, the site ran for a year or two back around/before the turn of the century as just a news page with no forums. They were a later addition. There was a data loss around 2002, because I had to recreate my account, and was miffed that it said 02 instead of whatever it was previously. I think its why no one really has a join date before Jan 02?. I was moving around in the military and didnt rejoing until Sep 02. But I'm afraid I remember no other details, as of why. Thanks for the info.

The site didn’t even have a forum back when it started. We had forums for a while before the, what was it? 2002 crash/data loss?. But yeah, I barely remember it just being the new edition's coming web page. It was a unique time, before the explosion of social media.

"Slippery Slope" is also a logical fallacy, just like the God of the Gaps. :) Sigh. It's an informal fallacy, which means it's not automatically wrong, but is instead an argument that doesn't support the conclusion. A true fallacy is an argument that invalidates the conclusion while an informal fallacy doesn't say whether or not the conclusion is wrong, just that the argument used doesn't support it. And slippery slope is one of those 'maybe' informal fallacies. It really depends on the form of the argument. If I say that if A happens, and then explore a solid causal chain that leads to B possibly happening, that's not an informal fallacy. If I instead say that if A happens then this tangentially related and more extreme event B will happen, that's a slippery slope fallacy (informal). I really do wish people would stop name checking the informal fallacies as if doing so was actually an argument. If you can't articulate the weakness of another's argument without reference to a n...

Just means the Chinese will do it instead. Or Europe. Really, most of the political crap is denial of science, not squashing or preventing it from happening. Science is marching on.
