Under most circumstances I'd agree, but since we're talking about a random encounter that (if I remember the Martek portion correctly) just pops out of the ground/glass and starts snacking, it should probably be modded in some fashion to avoid a no-win kill-a-character-or-three moment. Now, if it's modded as a "cutscene instance" like Quartz describes, where only major stupidity would get them...

Ah. Not all random encounters are intended for you to fight and win. Sometimes, you randomly encounter things that you are supposed to then avoid at all costs.

Jimmifett, it would be nice if you posted about something else sometimes, but since as far as I can make out the only reason you post in this community is to decry any hint of inclusiveness, it's time for you to leave.

Plus, multiple tabs (one open to each section you are flipping between) or "previous view", or "split window view." Not to denigrate good old reliable paper (try playing D&D in a power outage with a tablet at 20% power and no battery!) but there are plenty of flippin' tools. (term used non-ironically :))

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

Is the Purple Worm in this an important encounter plot-wise, or is it a random encounter? I love Desert of Desolation, but I can't remember specifically right now. If it's a random encounter, I might skip it or substitute a smaller version (maybe a 'baby' purple worm or variant species with a -2 to attacks, about 1 dice less damage, (about 3 dice less for the poison tail) and about 125 hp or so?...

There's a creature in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes called the Venom Troll that is a CR7 critter that can be DEVASTATING to even higher-level parties if a particular party is very melee-heavy and not ranged-attack-heavy. Every time the thing is hit with damage, acidic pustules pop and damage all creatures within 5 feet of it with poison damage. A party in melee with it is potentially damaging...

I'm running Ashen Stars on a regular basis... The game is pretty specifically designed to play out rather like an Episode of Star Trek - if you know what a "procedural" TV show is, Trek is kind of a sci-fi procedural, and the system models that well. The starship combat is pretty ingenious, and it has the focus of combat just where an episode of the series would have it. What you are...

I would love to have the organization infiltrate some of the police force but I would assume such a place would do routine screenings to ensure their people don't have magical compulsions or curses. For the next two weeks you may put your promotional/publisher posts in the relevant game forum. Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Folks need to read up on biology a bit before going into such things. You folks are making this way too complicated, and you are trying too hard to bind an alien species that only superficially looks human to human mechanisms and structures. I mean, think for a second, if a male can bring a baby to term, it quite obviously doesn't mean the same thing as "male" does in humans. Even on Earth,...

I'd agree with everybody else that I'd play the game before trying to adjust it. You can very rarely get a good feel for a game until you've played it.

Because it occurs to me, as an ironically curious consequence of that, that if WotC’s goal was hypothetically to sell books to you specifically, opening the DMsG has therefore lost them sales rather than gained them.

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

@Morrus should answer for sure. I imagine there wouldn't be a problem using images and excerpts of text, as long as you're not reproducing full encounters. As for what address to link to, I'm not sure if it will change since we've had a site reboot after December's hack attack, but I believe right now the go-to page is www.enworld.org/ap Thanks much. 1. No intent to reproduce or disseminate content that isn't part of a free download. I may want to reproduce parts of the players guide for ease of function; but the group is private. 2. Every page with content will contain a link back to ENPublishing as appropriate. Will wait on Morrus

Morrus and darjr: Okay, I know I have activated the wiki setting in the campaign group, but when I went to save this page, I didn't see an option to associate it with the group. Should there be a drop-down box? I'm a bit confused by the whole process. Or do I have to create a book page first and associate that with the group?

  • 06:03 PM - seebs quoted Morrus in post Gale Force 9 Comments On Brazil Translatorgate
Oh, that old chestnut! :D One guy running an FLGS isn't evidence, and an anecdote is not data. I can tell you that distributors and retailers are concerned about both PDFs undermining their sales, and about Kickstarter. And I've spoken to more than a guy running an FLGS. :) Even if I grant that they're concerned, so what? You've just moved the goalposts and stuck a big giant strawman in the goal. I didn't say that selling PDFs made people not carry your books. It's easy to score points when you argue against a position of your own creation. :) Dude. Chill. I am not trying to "score points", and there is no possible reason this needs to be treated like a life-or-death battle. But the question is: What benefit does Wizards gain from not selling PDFs? The opinions of distributors and retailers matter only if those opinions will result in lost sales. Which would require them to, say, stop selling the books. If they continue selling the books, then Wizards isn't losing sales. WotC has a ve...

  • 12:42 PM - Shasarak quoted Morrus in post Gale Force 9 Comments On Brazil Translatorgate
Oh, that old chestnut! :D One guy running an FLGS isn't evidence. I can tell you that distributors and retailers are concerned about both PDFs undermining their sales, and about Kickstarter. Not sure why retailers would be concerned about Kickstarters as there would be no product to sell without them. They may as well be concerned with the phases of the moon.
  • 03:33 AM - seebs quoted Morrus in post Gale Force 9 Comments On Brazil Translatorgate
Where have you been looking for your evidence? Talked to guy running FLGS, have also noted that everyone else seems to be able to sell PDFs, and yet I see their books in stores. If selling PDFs made people not carry your books, I wouldn't be able to find GURPS and Pathfinder books in stores.
  • 02:19 AM - seebs quoted Morrus in post Gale Force 9 Comments On Brazil Translatorgate
That's more to do with upsetting distributors and retailers. Is it really? Steve Jackson Games said that distributors objected to PDFs a long time ago, but have since started selling them, and these days I don't see any evidence that distributors and retailers care.

This isn't a court of law, guys. God gracious, of course not. This is a peasant revolt, where we burn the houses of the oppressor elites and use their heads to play soccer. Please excuse me now as I warm up with a fresh cup of Shadenfraude.
  • 11:12 PM - ChapolimX quoted Morrus in post Brazilian D&D Translators Fall Out Over Translation Rights
This isn't a court of law, guys. The parties in question will have to convince a judge if they choose to take that route. It's not us you need to prove it to, and in my experience if you can sum up the legal argument in a single sentence, the laws involved are probably more complex than that. :) This is 100% true. Knowing the Brazilian judicial system and the time it takes to solve any issue I wouldn't advise that route as a solution. The bigger problem I see is that of public distrust. The prints, pictures and even a video that were made public have convinced the public that Fire on Board is not worthy of the market. If gf9 don't find a legal way to take a step back from the partnership they will be between a rock and a hard place.

  • 05:30 PM - kenmarable quoted Morrus in post Brazilian D&D Translators Fall Out Over Translation Rights
It'd be an odd contract if it allows GF9 to simply cancel it at-will. Rather defeats the point of having it in the first place! If I understand right, it would be a cancellation for breach of contract. From the sounds of it, they presented a sample of their translation work that was produced by someone else. So they did not fairly represent themselves or their work in contract negotiations... allegedly. :) So *IF* that is the case, there may be contract provisions or even general contract law that would allow GF9 to cancel the contract because the other party misrepresented themselves. At least, as I am understanding the comment. Either way, it's an ugly situation and I'm not sure GF9 would want to or should wade into the middle of it. Hopefully, somehow, it will be resolved quickly and Brazillian fans can get a high quality translation soon.
