3/4 level sounds fine. The thing is itís such a situational spell. In players hands itís not that great. Even against a bbeg I donít think this would be my go to spell. Against players itís scary strong. Exhaustion is actually very hard to get rid of. Throw this spell out in the first encounter of the day, and you could do more to hinder that player than most anything else you can do...

Pretty good episode tonight. It was a pretty good take on the Enemy Mine plot. The Space Orcs were an interesting element too. And the B plot with Gordon was handled well too, I'd say maybe even better than Trek usually does.

Using the standard array and the "default" equipment given for each class and background, you can make a 5e level 1 character in approximately 10 minutes. I can't think of getting any faster while still maintaining a sense of meaningful choice about your character. For some, the existing character options, even including multiclassing and feats, are still too small. Personally, I'd really love to...

We have had informal agreements aplenty over the years. I'm currently running an Ashen Stars game, in which there are technically formal contract relationships involved as being members of a LASER crew. We most definitely do *not* write it out in full, as it is more like a modern legal document, with scads of sub-clauses. The party's business expert has, on more than one occasion, used his...

I wasn't the one who said, "the ultimate point of character creation isnít about character custimization but instead itís about having a character you can play in game." If it is just about having "a character," then why not just do it over and over again? Make an absolute statement, and reap the rewards of pure logic. Leave yourself some wiggle room, and you can avoid such traps.

Rolling in order only creates viable characters in a statistical sense. So, while decision points are slow, in the long run it probably beats having to roll in order several times before a character is generated that doesn't die when an orc sneezes on it. It is a question of whether you front-load your time expenditure or not. I prefer to do the job right once, rather than do quick...

Fair, though as I recall, previous versions of the 5e SRD had more limited content, more akin to what's in Basic. I glanced at the license, but I didn't probe into the content yesterday. If you wanna be really picky, WotC uses version 1.0a, released in 2000. I was not confident enough that *NO OTHER* versions existed out there to assert such.

Classically - illusions are what he does. Well, again classically, there's a group of extradimensional villains from the comics called the Elementals. We have the basic question of whether they are actually here, or if they are something Mysterio cooked up for him to be a hero fighting. I don't expect other cameos of note, as they won't want to reveal who survives Avengers:...

If you want an example of a world without an open gaming license, look back historically to TSR (owner of D&D prior to Wizards of the Coast) and their positions on D&D compatible content in the early and mid-1990s -- it was an environment where they insisted that anything that included even terminology now common in the genre (such as phrases like "hit points" or "armor class") became property of...

Both 3E and 5E have had some (but not all) of their content released under it, as have many other games. One of the main purposes of the OGL, as Ryan Dancey - its architect - said: it means that D&D is here to stay. Nothing can make it go away, not even the whims of a...

*Basic* 5e was released under the OGL, which to a quick scan doesn't appear particularly different from past OGLs. Rather than changing the control by changing the OGL, they did so by limiting content in the SRD - the basic mechanics are all there, but many of the classes are missing. So, anyone can write to the system, and even do something interesting with large changes (like Mutants and...

Hold on a second. Let us be clear - with a finite, comprehensible ruleset, there *will* be some options that are better than others. Full stop. Those that like doing deep dives into rules options *will* find them. No game designer can avoid this. It follows, then, that the game can't/shouldn't be designed around preserving all the concepts for optimizers, as it is not a tractable task. ...

After all, the architect and the artist probably were considering the setting, so the "juxtaposition" is their thought before it is the photographer's. So the formula is 5.5 - .25X. So that 5.5 - .25 * 10 = 5.5 - 2.5 = 3. So this means that my average damage increases by 3. Now where I'm confused is when you defined average damage. Cardassian Cardassians are a humanoid species easily identifiable by their light-grey skin, two thick vertical neck ridges that receded back to the crown of their head, and an inverted tear-shaped ridge in the center of the forehead. The ridge is thickest immediately above the eyes, protecting them and creating an deep-set appearance. This trait earned them the derogatory nickname "spoon...

Moving slow: Armor doesn't really impact your movement speed, so long as you have the strength to wear it. Clanging Around: The question isn't really what armor they are wearing. The question is whether they have Stealth. Heavy armor gives disadvantage on the check, but really, a character who doesn't have the skill is not quiet enough to reliably sneak around anyway. Note - heavy...

Yeah. It's a wonderful trilogy, with real character arcs which span it. It's the equivalent of Star Wars IV-VI for me, and the best Trek has ever been.

"What does God need with a starship?!?" And, let us face it, "Star Trek: The MOtion Picture" was not an example of a thing... that actually had a plot. Wrath of Khan and the Voyage Home, however, were probably the best movies, for me. I kind of like them all, but the Dominion War had some great stuff in it. And the last season of Enterprise, when they handed things over to Manny...

I can't say I've ever seen a player use an action surge outside of combat, either, but Mistwell's example of getting one last try to catch someone from falling would be a compelling instance. It's just that for anyone who has action surge, it's not often remembered in out of combat situations - it's like a bard starting with regaining bardic inspiration on a long rest, and then four levels later...

@Morrus should answer for sure. I imagine there wouldn't be a problem using images and excerpts of text, as long as you're not reproducing full encounters. As for what address to link to, I'm not sure if it will change since we've had a site reboot after December's hack attack, but I believe right now the go-to page is www.enworld.org/ap Thanks much. 1. No intent to reproduce or disseminate content that isn't part of a free download. I may want to reproduce parts of the players guide for ease of function; but the group is private. 2. Every page with content will contain a link back to ENPublishing as appropriate. Will wait on Morrus

Morrus and darjr: Okay, I know I have activated the wiki setting in the campaign group, but when I went to save this page, I didn't see an option to associate it with the group. Should there be a drop-down box? I'm a bit confused by the whole process. Or do I have to create a book page first and associate that with the group?

  • 04:23 PM - OB1 quoted Morrus in post Mike Mearls' AMA Summary
Are there any plans for non-Faerun settings like Dark Sun, Eberron, Spelljammer, or really any setting that isn't Faerun? Yes, but nothing I can talk about. We think of D&D as a multiverse of worlds. Please let this be Dust (AP with Setting guides for DMs) and Midway (Rules Expansion for PCs in the Multiverse)! Also, I couldn't find the exact quote when I re-read this morning, but I thought it was great the way Mike described that even though he has personal preferences, they have a very robust system in place to determine what does and does not get in or get changed. For those who are worried about how he feels about the Druid, I'd point to that statement.
  • 02:59 PM - Barolo quoted Morrus in post [UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System
I'm trying to recall the early days of 3E, but wasn't everybody really excited about the idea of cyclic initiative then? I can't remember 2E well enough now -- was that initiative each round? Were weapon speeds in that edition, or 1E? I must be getting old. I played those games for years, but I can't remember what was in which! A lot of people were indeed excited, which I think was more related to it being something new, and yes, in 2E we did roll every round, by the book, declaring actions before rolling because of speed factors. I don't remember weapon speeds in 1E, though, but my grey hair might have a word or two regarding my memory :p.
  • 04:45 AM - jamesjhaeck quoted Morrus in post Mike Mearls' AMA Summary
I'm just glad we now know what Mearls' favourite drink is. Gah, you got me excited to know what his favorite liquor was, not just a soft drink! :P
  • 01:09 AM - FormerlyHemlock quoted Morrus in post Mike Mearls' AMA Summary
Stuff about 5e that bugs me: Cyclical initiative - too predictable Fighter subclasses - so bland! The divide in the warlock between the pact and the pact boon - boons should be options chosen from among stuff your specific pact can give Ranger - I'd rebuild it using the paladin as more of a model Druid - I'd make shapeshifting more central, maybe scale casting back to paladin or rogue level, use a nature domain for the guy with a scimitar and shield James Wyatt wrote a cool sample adventure for the DMG that we couldn't include. Wish we had. A better treatment of actions - action typing is still too fuzzy for more tastes. Bonus action - they're pretty hacky; I'd get rid of them and just design smarter. Prior editions always poke through your thinking and distort it. We were so dependent on swift/minor actions that it took a lot of work to stop framing concepts in their terms. He's not wrong.

  • 07:16 PM - robus quoted Morrus in post The New D&D Adventure Storyline Will Be Announced On June 2nd-3rd
For D&D, movies increase overall brand awareness, with spillover benefit to the tabletop RPG. Because D&D is a tabletop RPG with a movie (whereas Star Wars is a movie with a tabletop RPG) the effects are somewhat different. And the stakes a lot higher. But your point is taken.
  • 03:29 AM - robus quoted Morrus in post The New D&D Adventure Storyline Will Be Announced On June 2nd-3rd
There's a huge difference between simultaneously maintaining 12 different setting lines and sequentially releasing the occasional adventure for a setting other than the FR. So different that that the comparison isn't really relevant. The main reason for the current focus is branding and IP content. Movies and video games and stuff don't care about the ruleset, they need storylines and a setting. So take the D&D brand name (for branding) and merge it with the FR setting (for content), you have your package. D&D isn't just a tabletop RPG now; that just happens to be the portion of D&D we're interested in on this site. I have to say I find the desire to make D&D a multimedia mega hit is puzzling. M:tG is much more valuable property - where are the Magic movies, board games etc? Really their planes walkers are totally set up for a movie series! I'm not saying I want this, I'm just confused as to why d&d gets the push to be master of all media and not Magic?
  • 01:40 AM - rooneg quoted Morrus in post The New D&D Adventure Storyline Will Be Announced On June 2nd-3rd
There's a huge difference between simultaneously maintaining 12 different setting lines and sequentially releasing the occasional adventure for a setting other than the FR. So different that that the comparison isn't really relevant. Sure, but if you stick to the same 2 big adventure releases per year and make 1 of them into a non-realms release you're talking about 50% of your total content for the year being outside that core shared setting you're trying to get people to buy into. I expect the Curse of Strahd style releases to be way rarer than that. Think one out of every 4 HCs or so, maybe every 3 if we're lucky. That puts them at once every two years. Anyone who's expecting non-realms stuff to come more often than that seems likely to be unpleasantly surprised, partly because they want to avoid the "12 different setting lines" and partly because there are just so few storylines to go around in the current release schedule, so every time you do a non-realms one it's actually a really big...

You're probably right. I played BG again a couple of years ago, but I struggled to get into the 2E mechanics again. Is the current Neverwinter online game 5E? I think I tried it once, but I can't remember when that was. No it is more like an mmo adaptation of 4e.

Melee requires two diametrically opposite flankers. I get that, what I mean is: once I have two diametrically opposite flankers can a third party gain the benefit, I guess a better way of wording it is this: Option 1: Once I have two diametric attackers I am considered to be flanked and melee attacks against me get a +1d6 bonus (whether from the two diametric foes, or from another party), i.e.: flanked is a condition that applies to the victim. Or Option 2: An attacker who has an allied attacker on the other side of his foe is considered to be flanking, and gwts a +1d6 bonus to his attack, i.e. flanking is a condition that applies to attackers. I don't think they're really meant for us - the Hollywood types serve to attract the attention of the wider market who otherwise might be completely unaware of D&D as anything other than a couple of funny words. Agreed. I'll check it out but recognize ahead of time that it's a teaser meant for general audiences using cultural honeypots to draw in viewers.

Excuse me? If you have some kind of bizarre accusation to make, come right out and say it, please. No, not about you. I wasn't in a good mood at the time and shouldn't have been posting or even reading the forums at that point in time. I thought about coming back and editing/deleting the post, but never comfortable doing such a thing in order to hide what was said.

  • 04:44 PM - Tonguez quoted Morrus in post Holy crap! Judge Dredd TV Show!
I really hope this is good. I was hoping for a Carl Urban Netflix series, but I'll take what I can get! The expensive part is going to be the sets. Megacity One is hard to do justice on screen. It's like Bladerunner on steroids. Sent from my iPhone using EN World This PROG has the potential to be a zarjaz plunge into the Thrill-pool or alternatively it could be entirely spugg and only good for dumping in the Black Atlantic. I look forward with excited trepidation but I am a little sceptical about whether a TV series can really turn the dial up to 4 and do Justice to 2000AD. Hopefully we get to explore the whole 2000AD universe including Psi-Division, Tharg the Magnificent, Walter the Wobot and Banzai Battalion. as well as cameos from ABC Warriors, Johnny Alpha, Rogue Trooper and even Nemesis (I'd love to see Nemesis on screen!)

She won't detect as evil unless she somehow gains the Evil virtue. Just to clarify, by "gains the evil virtue", you do not mean "gains the secret of the evil virtue"? It's kind of redundant in a way, as her imp will detect as evil anyway... Sent from my K011 using Tapatalk

I grabbed the imp from the Bestiary and put it up on the online bestiary under Demons. Many thanks for that, As a sidenote (and I was pondering this whilst creating creatures), is there a rule covering how die caps work with monsters? For example, the imp has a cap of 3d6, but right off the bat perception is 5d6 -> 3d6. Would it not be simpler to simply omit the perception skill? Sent from my K011 using Tapatalk
