Sure. Any location - whether big like Twitter or small like here - is just a potential sparking point for a bigger effect. Usually it isnít, but sometimes something happens, and careers end and brands get damaged. One guy at a company staying quiet for a bit is prudent.l, lest it escalate (which it probably wouldnít, but itís not a risk worth taking).

Hadoken and Kamehameha.. question is are they class based or racial is first question. Let's work on the Hadoken... most likely a Ki based attack.. so it'd be based on your Wisdom.. And if I remember correctly.. takes time to charge.. so a bare minimum it's a full round action, with a base damage of say.. 2d6 (so if able to learn at level 1, it's more damaging than many weapons), and say + Wis...

In 13th Age, by default the party can "flee" at any point in a fight, and all the characters survive (unless they're already dead). The penalty is a "campaign loss," as in, something goes badly in the game world as a result. The rule doesn't prevent all PC deaths, but it's a big help. Back in 2008, I wrote up that rule and posted it on Gleemax, the short-lived digital platform that Wizards of the...

Yeah, but Klyden's not a crew member, so we don't expect to see him live up to the Trek standard. He also serves as a window into Moclan culture, especially when Bortus is willing to question it. I had kind of a Riker vibe going on too since there were similarities at first, but then they went in a very different direction with it.

I'm sure the sheer amount of photography of that building over the last century means no detail will be left undocumented. Copying it will be easy, as long as they can spend the money. That said, isn't it a private building owned by the Catholic Church? They don't need donations or French taxpayer money to rebuild it. They have billions.

Save or Die effects aren't great for monsters because there's too much riding on a single roll. They're not great for player-character powers because they invalidate the way most characters bring down enemies: hit point attrition. In 13th Age, we picked up a rule from Dave Hargrave's Arduin Adventure game. Save-or-die effects have a hit point cap. The death lord PC in our game uses the "Sever...

My game runs twice a month, in theory, but sometimes we have to miss a session. Moreover, it is a Gumshoe game, so there's a significant amount of investigation involved. Remembering those details for weeks or a month is more than I can ask of the players, so we definitely do at least a, "When we last left our intrepid crew...." and more reminders if they ask for it. Depends on what you mean by, "literary." There's some who will use it to mean, "of a quality and/or style similar to critically acclaimed literature." Much like we talk about a game having "cinematic action" if we feel it evokes the style and feeling and imagery of Hollywood action movies. From context, I expect that's in the ballpark of what you mean. With that qualifying presumption,...

You can test it, if you have the courage. Roll 100 times (or more, if you like), and do a little math. https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/70802/how-can-i-test-whether-a-die-is-fair Note before you try this that having one's preferred narrative contradicted sometimes has adverse results. It works out to about 10% total, pretty consistently. Half of that is fees, the other half is failed pledges. That figure tracks pretty much standard across Kickstarters of all sizes. For example, my Judge Dredd Kickstarter made £148K in pledges. The amount we actually received was £133K.

Agreed. Local schools and libraries, Boy's and Girl's Clubs, Scouts, and other youth organizations may be able to take these off your hands in a constructive and tax-deductible manner.

Except that this is really not true. It isn't an effective randomizer if it isn't effectively random. What you *know* about the randomness is not relevant. Randomness exists outside yoru perception of that randomness. This becomes clear with the hypothetical die that rolls 20 nintey percent of the time, and 17 ten percent of the time. The fact that you don't know it doesn't change the fact...

And the superstitions - your brother should understand better than most that this is how the human mind works - including his own. Way better to get your fill of magical thinking while playing a harmless entertainment game, than when...

How many rounds do your fights last? I'm playing a cleric - I get maybe one roll a round, and not even that if I am casting spells that have a save (like ye standard Sacred Flame), rather than a spell attack roll. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

I'm big on accessories and things to make my game better. I'm currently collecting all of Paizo's flip-mats (they are SO useful!) and I bought Art & Arcana. If I spend money on Kickstarter, it's usually something really cool that's caught my eye. I don't buy much digital -- I'm very fond of physical stuff.

No, they have a die they *think* rolls high. Remember, you are talking about a species that thinks that their favorite sports team will perform badly if we wear the wrong socks on game day. It is much more likely to be perception rather than reality - unless they actually rolled a bunch of times, recorded the rolls, and did a statistical analysis, their perception is subject to all the usual...

You keep using that word, but I think you're confusing it with "anecdote" and "guess"....Lots of folks on these boards remember the 70s, dude. You're not *that* old.....Data beats anecdote 100% of the time. Even circumstantial data beats anecdote. And anecdote beats hunch, guess, and feeling. Comparing potential Golden Ages takes data from both eras, something that has not been presented here by ANYONE. I would love to look at data from the 80s that tells us about market shares and such, but it doesn't appear to be forthcoming to aid us in evaluating the Golden Age question here. In the absence of such data, educated guesses, and life experiences/ancedotes are the next best thing we have to use. If you present data that the number of people smoking is growing, and that we are therefore in a "Smoking Golden Age," I would say waiiiiitttt a minute - even if there was no data available from other eras. I remember people smoked everywhere back in the 70s - on planes, trains, and automobiles, i...

For me, the game serves my friends; they don’t serve it. They’re busy people with kids and stuff - it’s not like they have tons of time to do the other stuff either. Our weekly game is the only chance we all really get to see each other. Yes. Much of it depends on what stage of your life you are in. University students flaking out on each other will probably be taken differently than middle ages games with families and careers.
  • 09:14 AM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post D&D 5e nearing 800,000 copies sold?
Meant to reply to this, but life happened. Just remembered. So, yay insomnia? I donít know, but Iím sure they had fairly accurate sales figures in the 80s. They had later endemic problems, but I donít know that keeping records of sales figures was one. Keep in mind that in the mid-1980s TSR also struggled. A lot. In 1983 TSR actually lost money and survived via a bank loan, which carried with it the stipulation of staff reduction. Eventually they ended up laying off three-quarters of its 400 employees. This led to the executives in charge of the company being let go (the Blumes), which saw the brief return of Gygax before being ousted by Lorraine Williams in 1985. While Williams ended up making some pretty bad decisions in the mid-90s, all throughout the height of the D&D boom of 1980-85 the company was terribly managed. Pretty much what you'd expect with a publishing company being run by a cobbler who hadn't graduated from high school, as well as and a 23-year-old* who persuad...
  • 07:55 AM - shoak1 quoted Morrus in post Is D&D Entering a New Golden Age?
...itial gut feeling is that heck no, we are not in a Golden Age Ė it doesnít at all feel the same way. But lets see if your evidence contradicts my life experience: Sales of the hobby game market are on the rise, with tabletop role-playing games increasing along with other tabletop games. With a new Wizards of the Coast CEO in place who values Dungeons & Dragons as much as Magic: The Gathering and a movie on the horizon, we're starting to see signs that D&D is doing very well indeed. The Hobby Market is Doing Well ICv2 reported that the hobby market is hitting eye-popping numbers: Sales of hobby games in the U.S. and Canada topped $1.4 billion in 2016....... Thatís a 21% total growth rate over 2015, with rates of change ranging from 17% for the slowest-growing category to 29% for the fastest-growing. Growth rates were pulled higher by more rapid growth of hobby games in the mass channel, especially in collectible, board, and card & dice games. OK - so according to the data Morrus posted http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?563442-How-big-s-the-RPG-market, rpgs as an industry only constitute 3% of the total sales of hobby games in the U.S. and Canada. So the fact that the hobby game industry overall grew may or may not mean growth for rpgs and/or D and D. Of those categories, collectible games grew the most, followed by hobby board games and role-playing games. Role-playing games increased the most, by 29%, from $35 million to $45 million. Of the top five RPGs, Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition and Pathfinder retained their first and second position, respectively. So here we seem to have something solid - a 29% increase in RPG sales with D and D being the highest selling RPG......... Or do we? How much of the RPG market share is D and D? If it is 70%, then clearly any such massive upward tick would indicate D and D is also growing, but what if D and D were only 20% of the market? What if the number 3 RPG is responsible for the growth? Furthermor...

  • 09:10 PM - robus quoted Morrus in post Why are vehicle speeds so slow in the DMG?
Is that averaged over a day? Rowboats can do faster that, but you can’t keep it up all day. Sent from my iPhone using EN World DMG says characters can row for 8 hours a day (pg 117) so I'd be pretty mad if I'd rowed all day and only gone a third of the distance I can walk! :)
  • 08:45 PM - discosoc quoted Morrus in post Why are vehicle speeds so slow in the DMG?
Is that averaged over a day? Rowboats can do faster that, but you can’t keep it up all day. Sent from my iPhone using EN World No, it's not averaged over a day. It's a vehicles speed, and the PHB clearly explains how to handle these. Rowed Vessels: Keelboats and rowboats are used on lakes and rivers. If going downstream, add the speed of the current (typically 3 miles per hour) to the speed of the vehicle. These vehicles can’t be rowed against any significant current, but they can be pulled upstream by draft animals on the shores. A rowboat weighs 100 pounds, in case adventurers carry it over land.

Our weekly game is the only chance we all really get to see each other. Fair enough. I have run into the same situation. Part of the challenge of friends is finding the right mix. More often that not, we just choose something else to do. Obviously friends is a very personal issue so I can see where my statements needed a little more explanation.

My friends are not replaceable. I would argue in the context of a game they are. Not all my friends share the same interests and if they do they will make a serious effort as a friend to participate. I am not talking one-offs, but consistently finding excuses to not play. At that point, I just assume my friend has other interests we can enjoy, and D&D is not one of them.

  • 10:31 PM - Caliban quoted Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
Or four well placed arrows. Nobody alive can shrug off an arrow in the eye. Yeah, but in D&D terms, the "arrow to the eye" requires a crit or a rogue or someone with the sharpshooter feat. Or opponents with very few hit points. The point is that guns (in theory) do comparable (or greater!) damage without requiring anything more than proficiency. (Again, this if you are wanting to implement 'realistic' gun damage - if you are doing Hollywood guns, then they do just as much as a longbow or heavy crossbow.) Guns are both easier to use and do much more damage. If you are being realistic.
  • 09:35 PM - Tony Vargas quoted Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
. Iíd be very interested in seeing some studies about the comparative amount of damage to the human body from a bulletproof or being slashed with a sharp sword. Thanks to the 2nd Amendment & American politics there have been plenty of studies contrasting the GSW with the effects of other lethal weapons (though not so much swords, specifically), and plenty of controversy about them. The reason guns are better is because they are easier to use, require less training than a sword, and are ranged The 'equalizer' meme, yes. But if you stand there and take a solid blow from a sword, there will be a catastrophic amount of damage to your body. The actual energy in both cases is limited by the strength of the wielder - you can only lift so heavy a sword, or handle so much recoil. Thereís a reason you have a single headsman, but a firing squad.Apropos of nothing, its anonymity. The headsman wears a hood, any given member of a firing squad may not have hit the victim.
  • 09:22 PM - Caliban quoted Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
And swords tend to cut things off! Well, that's actually kind of rare outside of movies. They cut and mangle, and limbs get amputated afterward if dealing with primitive medical abilities. But once again, it really depends on playstyle: Do you want Grim and Gritty, or Hollywood Cinematic? Either can be fun.
  • 09:18 PM - discosoc quoted Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
Yes, guns arrived because - like crossbows before them - they were easier to use than a sword or a longbow. Not because they did super damage. I don’t agree that a bullet wound is harder to treat; a sword will mangle up your insides just fine; and you’re not reattaching a dismembered hand. But I’m not a doctor, so if any doctors here say otherwise I’ll take their word for it. Savage wounds from either type will obviously kill, but not all sword attacks are going to be that savage. Your opponent can still move out of the way (or try), and armor can protect even more. End result is a lot of cuts and stabs that -- provided they didn't directly hit something important -- can be treated pretty effectively. Guns, on the other hand, have bullets that enter the body and then tumble around into various muscles, bones, and organs, usually resulting in pretty major blood loss and often pneumothorax if it's the chest. Unlike with swords, you can't really dodge bullets and ...

But Iím not a doctor, so if any doctors here say otherwise Iíll take their word for it. Bullets tend to impart a lot more kinetic force to the target than a sword or arrow does, causing waves of concussive force that travel through the body and can amplify the wound (Hydrostatic Shock). It's even uglier if the bullet hits a bone instead of passing through - then it can ricochet inside the body or limb, doing devastating damage. But, that's only if you want the grim and gritty gun damage. Cinematic gun damage means people shrug off bullet wounds just like anything else. "I just winged him" and "It's only a flesh wound."
  • 08:32 PM - discosoc quoted Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
Do they? Being beheaded with a sword is pretty catastrophic damage, IMO. Maybe he means they have a much larger margin for error. Killing someone with a sword (who's fighting back or running away) takes some level of skill, assuming the target isn't helpless or surprised at your attempt. Killing someone with a gun is incredibly easy, and the wounds are much harder to treat with more collateral damage.
  • 05:57 PM - Imaculata quoted Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
One of the rules I introduced for a SWAT boardgame that I'm working on, is that enemies in close combat get advantage on disarm attempts when you are wielding a longarm. This adds an extra incentive to use bullpup rifles in close quarters instead (specifically sub machine guns) that have shortened barrels, and are harder to wrestle away from the user. Do they? Being beheaded with a sword is pretty catastrophic damage, IMO. You can be beheaded by a gun as well. But I think your changes for survival are better if you get stabbed with a sword, or shot with a bow, than if you get shot with a gun. The velocity and force of bullets are pretty devastating to the human body. Heck, if you're unlucky a simple knife could be pretty deadly too. But the overal damage of a knife is less than that of a sword or a gun. I think the rules are correct to give more damage to guns.

I'm curious as to what "bad with its figures" means? The impression I've gotten from a variety of interviews with former TSR people and WOTC people is there was a time when TSR was counting "books printed" as "books sold" in some of their measurements, but not in others. Then they got massive returns, and distribution issues, and ended up with warehouses full of unsold stuff that had previously been accounted for as sold books by some of their metrics (and I suspect most were the ones the marketing department were using). They were writing down thousands and thousands of books, and then they were burning some of those books out at below cost in overstock book sources as well. So when they say they sold X books, it was kinda hard to know how accurate that really was. Had they distributed X books and then gotten 30% backs as returns? Had they sold 20% at below cost as a firesale write-off tactic? What went into the X number? It was kinda a mess to really know. One person at TSR could genuin...

I'm curious as to what "bad with its figures" means? Based on what I've heard and read (from Ryan Dancey, Stan! on the DragonTalk podcast, and various recollections from TSR employees at "Secrets of TSR" panels) their accounting and record keeping was not good, especially in the early days when they were being run by people learning the "game publishing business" as they went along.
