Under most circumstances I'd agree, but since we're talking about a random encounter that (if I remember the Martek portion correctly) just pops out of the ground/glass and starts snacking, it should probably be modded in some fashion to avoid a no-win kill-a-character-or-three moment. Now, if it's modded as a "cutscene instance" like Quartz describes, where only major stupidity would get them...

Ah. Not all random encounters are intended for you to fight and win. Sometimes, you randomly encounter things that you are supposed to then avoid at all costs.

Jimmifett, it would be nice if you posted about something else sometimes, but since as far as I can make out the only reason you post in this community is to decry any hint of inclusiveness, it's time for you to leave.

Plus, multiple tabs (one open to each section you are flipping between) or "previous view", or "split window view." Not to denigrate good old reliable paper (try playing D&D in a power outage with a tablet at 20% power and no battery!) but there are plenty of flippin' tools. (term used non-ironically :))

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

Is the Purple Worm in this an important encounter plot-wise, or is it a random encounter? I love Desert of Desolation, but I can't remember specifically right now. If it's a random encounter, I might skip it or substitute a smaller version (maybe a 'baby' purple worm or variant species with a -2 to attacks, about 1 dice less damage, (about 3 dice less for the poison tail) and about 125 hp or so?...

There's a creature in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes called the Venom Troll that is a CR7 critter that can be DEVASTATING to even higher-level parties if a particular party is very melee-heavy and not ranged-attack-heavy. Every time the thing is hit with damage, acidic pustules pop and damage all creatures within 5 feet of it with poison damage. A party in melee with it is potentially damaging...

I'm running Ashen Stars on a regular basis... The game is pretty specifically designed to play out rather like an Episode of Star Trek - if you know what a "procedural" TV show is, Trek is kind of a sci-fi procedural, and the system models that well. The starship combat is pretty ingenious, and it has the focus of combat just where an episode of the series would have it. What you are...

I would love to have the organization infiltrate some of the police force but I would assume such a place would do routine screenings to ensure their people don't have magical compulsions or curses. For the next two weeks you may put your promotional/publisher posts in the relevant game forum. Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Folks need to read up on biology a bit before going into such things. You folks are making this way too complicated, and you are trying too hard to bind an alien species that only superficially looks human to human mechanisms and structures. I mean, think for a second, if a male can bring a baby to term, it quite obviously doesn't mean the same thing as "male" does in humans. Even on Earth,...

I'd agree with everybody else that I'd play the game before trying to adjust it. You can very rarely get a good feel for a game until you've played it.

Because it occurs to me, as an ironically curious consequence of that, that if WotC’s goal was hypothetically to sell books to you specifically, opening the DMsG has therefore lost them sales rather than gained them.

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

From the Android ENWorld app I've noticed that a bunch of obvious spam had made the "trending" and seem to remain despite being removed. Any way to fix this? Lets add a mention to , um, GOT IT! Umbran, or should I have contacted darjr? Sent from my Nexus 6 using EN World mobile app Probably. For tech stuff, you generally want darjr or Morrus. Ok, let's do that then: darjr or Morrus.? Can this be a problem?

Thanks. I'll probably check out N.E.W. as well. Are there published adventures for it? Unfortunately, I don't really have time to create my own at the moment. I rely on published adventures for now... Even if I had the time, I would want to have some experience with the world/rules/etc before attempting to create an adventure. I understand. I'm in the same boat. IDK the product releases for NEW, but there are links on the enworld drop down menu above, or on the homepage. Or maybe Morrus can chime in.

  • 01:22 AM - LordEntrails mentioned Morrus in post New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast
I said it before, I have meant no hostility, in what I have posted before and what I'm posting now. @Morrus, I also have no problems with books, I thought my exchange with @darjr around post #98 of this thread made that clear. @Staffan, I see no point in discussing theft as a legitimate business option. A consideration, yes, an option, no. @Charles Rampant, I'm not bent out of shape. I'm amused. As Myrddin points out, most of what you ask for is already available. As I pointed out earlier, I find it amusing that people continually make the same complaints yet refuse to acknowledge that options other than what they have envisioned are available. Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe your ideas of a companion app are something new and revolutionary, but what has been described in this thread fails to describe something new and revolutionary in my understanding. I find discussions on ENWorld interesting. One aspect of that is that people seem to assume hostility here rather than interest or critical consideration.

  • 10:54 PM - Parmandur mentioned Morrus in post Why Forums Should Be Ignored By Game Developers
And yet Green Ronin recently said they were going to shut down their forums due to it's atmosphere (much like Wotc), I think they have reconsidered since then. While I have seen a lot of good things at "1st party" type forums over the years, I have seen them cause a lot of grief for fans and companies. I think the main thing was that they couldn't justify any ROI when third parties lime Morrus who run for.s for a living can focus on it full time; way lower cost to have staff tweet than to run a forum.

  • 02:54 PM - pdzoch mentioned Morrus in post How did you find ENWorld?
While looking for a way to better manage the class powers in D&D 4e, I found through a google search this thread. Which got me started working in the Magic Set Editor. While the thread appears to be long dead, and D&D is not in the 5th edition, I still use the software and post updated material using on this forum. To answer Morrus' question, there was a long time between when I first came here and when I actually became active. The WOTC sites, being the official site for the products, was where I attempted to engage the community most. However, I simply did not find the site easy to negotiate or really very vibrant. I was disappointed to say the least. When their forum shut down, I did not think it was much of a loss. I looked at other sites to participate it -- RPGGeek really hadn't taken off yet (it is still a fledgling companion to the boardgamegeek) and I found D&DReddit simply too hostile to waste my time with.
  • 10:20 AM - Lanefan mentioned Morrus in post How OLD are YOU
I'm 55...without the '+' until next summer. :) Morrus, a question: where does the data come from, that gives the ages of users? I'm not sure if Google knows my age...at least, I don't remember telling it. Ditto male/female etc.; though this computer is regiestered to my name etc. nobody including Google knows who is actually using it at any given moment. (obviously, I am now as I'm posting; but anyone in the household could browse the front page and at best would still show up as me) Lanefan

For DCC Lankhmar, the Goodman Games announcement about it from Dec. 26, 2016 would be the best reference: http://goodman-games.com/blog/2016/12/26/dcc-lankhmar-is-coming-soon/.

  • 04:50 AM - Reynard mentioned Morrus in post N.E.W. I took the plunge. Now What?
... best use their exploits. But I like the WEG Star Wars/d20 marriage vibe the system gives and will certainly play it more and see how it serves. Sometimes it is hard to try new games when you play them in a different game mode and I think since the players were a subset of my weekly FG D&D 5E group we sort of thought of it as 5E by default. On a personal note, it was really cool to run a game in my novel setting. Just yesterday I finished final edits (I hired an editor and finished going through his edits, I mean) so I have been deeply immersed in it for some time. I set the game a generation after the novel (and potential sequels) so it was fun to imagine the results of my main characters actions. I intend to keep this thread alive as I tinker with the system for this setting. In a perfect world, if I had the time and do end up thinking WOIN is a good fit, I would take advantage of the OGL nature of WOIN and put out a setting or standalone to augment the novels. Good stuff, Morrus. * In case any of the players meander over here by chance, I will spoiler block it: There was a side encounter with some bandits and their "warlock" master -- a person who has been contacted by a daemon via some aether device and given secrets in return for service. It turns out, the daemon circling the Robot Ruin is that same daemon. It has managed to use internal systems of the mecha to drive the mad Maker into a frenzy of repair using ancient tech stolen by the warlock's bandits. If the mad Maker can get the Robot Ruin fixed, the daemon will enter the mecha (much as the Bottled Daemon PC entered the industrial robot) and have a 300 foot tall war machine at its disposal.

  • 06:34 AM - MoonSong mentioned Morrus in post Rogue One Review (Spoilers)
...aps ignorance is bliss?) As much as the prequel trilogy gets slammed, I find lots of kids who love them. Have to remember the target of audience of children. I don't hate the prequels, but the originals are still the best. VII was way to fast for me (again loved it). I showed my students the originals (digitally remastered on VHS, Han shoots Greedo with no return fire!) they said they were boring and took to long ... wanted to draw my own lightsaber and go Anakin on them! Of course age plays a huge role in this. My actual introduction to Star Wars was Episode I, back when it was first in theaters, it and Attack of the Clones sparked my interest into what was otherwise an old franchise with dated effects that had been spoiled to death. (My first Star Wars movie before that was The Eewoks) I also notice that for children born after the prequels all six movies are a coherent whole without distinction between old and new, and they love Star Wars all the same. As a contrast with Morrus my list of Star Wars movies goes like this V III R1 VI I VII Eewoks II IV Battle for Endor (Super bleak)

  • 05:16 PM - Sadras quoted Morrus in post Gail Gygax Sued By Movie Producer
Seven years is far too short for most IP. Had the rule been 7 years, the Hobbit would have been in the public domain before Tolkien would have been able to finish and publish Lord of the Rings. Life of author + some modest amount should be fine. The current state of affairs is ridiculous, but 7 years would also be ridiculous. Indeed. You can’t even make a film trilogy in that time. A trilogy is nothing compared to the writing of the Winds of Winter. If that 7 year rule had been in effect, a fan-made copy would have hit the shelves by 12 July 2018. #Truestory.

They’re not her children. I don’t know them (I know some folks here do; I’ve met Gail and Gary a few times, but not Luke or Ernie) and I’m sure plenty of people here could elaborate, but I suspect therein lies the problem. Thanks for correcting MOrrus, I have never met Gail, but her social media post is heavily structured with paranoia; "a trip wire" that speaks for itself.

Blimey. Don't worry about the difference between "good" reasons and just having reasons. Takes 21 days to develop or eliminate a habit. Worry when you don't see the folks returning after 14. :) Personally, this site is great and the products are really sound. Very, very few RPG sites last past 2 years let alone 20. KB

There's a (beta) character builder online: http://www.enworld.org/morrusdev/character.php (I wrote it myself to learn PHP, so it might not be perfect -- it doesn't apply exploits, for example, but it does list them for you). This seems to be using a different rules-set? Not only are the attributes and skills off, but it's lacking certain exploits and options, and has unusual notes like Androids selecting two modification choices and so on that aren't reflected in the 1.2 version of the book.

You’ve understood it correctly! The number he needs to hit is the target creature’s RANGED DEFENCE score. Ah, that does start to slot things in place. I hadn't realised the Ranged Defence score gave the score to be made. I shall leave you alone for a while and do some more reading. Spending a dice means removing it from your dice pool. For example, if you are rolling 6d6 and you want to spend 2d6 on extra damage, you roll 4d6 instead. That fits with what I thought - I have provided some additional info in a new post that may throw some more light on things. If you can find the time to respond to that, I think I shall be able to make progress. Thanks for the help.

I ensured we were OK for GDPR months ago. For a message board like this, it's not a very onerous task. We collect almost zero user data here (username, email, IP, basically) and it isn't shared anywhere. And yep, the functionality to delete an account is present if it becomes needed. We're good. If I understand it correctly, the issue isn't compliance. It is risk of litigation. Strike to Stun (the WFRP forums) is (also) shutting down (in part) because of GDPR. The reason given is that it's just not worth the risk of someone suing. Whether the site is compliant or not isn't the issue. The issue is that GDPR opens up an avenue of blackmail through the legal system, in that no hobby-run forum can afford a legal process and would be forced into giving in to whatever demands are met (most likely shutting the site anyway). This obviously applies primarily to EU-based sites (Server Goddess runs StS from Austria). Hobby sites run from the U.S., for instance can probably just shrug at any ...

  • 06:15 PM - BookBarbarian quoted Morrus in post “Who started it?” Initiative order
Sometimes a PC initiates combat and then the DM asks for initiative. That player then argues they should go first. Surprise rounds etc. have been (IMO) inelegantly used in these situations over various editions. I’m toying with a minor house rule — if somebody unexpectedly starts the fight, they don’t roll initiative. Everybody else does, then the person who started it goes first, with their initiative one point ahead of the first person to react. Might try that next game session! . I think I would resolve the Players stated action and then roll initiative.

Why don't I get to roll initiative?" :-) What is wrong with the surprise rule?
