This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

So in my campaign, the party works for a city with access to very high level magics. 8th level spells are not out of question when necessary. The only caveat is while revivification is possible, other raise dead magics are not. Further, the city has very good security, and a lot of licence to use it. Aka, there is no "legal protections" that would hinder them in the pursuit of their...

Man, I'll take it. I kinda wish The Good Place had come out before I started writing ZEITGEIST, because I would have been more careful to include more philosophies and moral quandaries. The Voice of Rot is sort of a nihilist villain, to contrast with the high-minded ideals of the Ob. But I do feel like I could have layered him a bit more, or at least given him more time to interact with the...

More monsters is really the way to go, or focus on area attack monsters. Also, active traps can be great here. I appreciate the notes. Yeah I think to me the Eidelon's offensive CR is a bit underrepresented because it has a very solid possibility of knocking out an equivalent level player in a single round....which of course reduces the party's offense against it. Compare that to a stone golem that will take a few rounds to do the same, so it has to endure more punishment. But again I don't think this...

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

So it sounds like your main concern in the argument isn't the damage of ranged, its the true "range" of ranged. For example in 3e many ranged benefits fell away at 30 feet (Sneak Attack, Point Blank Shot). On the other hand, 5e imposes greater penalty for "moderate ranges". For 3e with your composite bow you suffered a -2 to attack rolls from ranges 110 - 215. In 5e, starting at 150 you...

@Morrus should answer for sure. I imagine there wouldn't be a problem using images and excerpts of text, as long as you're not reproducing full encounters. As for what address to link to, I'm not sure if it will change since we've had a site reboot after December's hack attack, but I believe right now the go-to page is www.enworld.org/ap Thanks much. 1. No intent to reproduce or disseminate content that isn't part of a free download. I may want to reproduce parts of the players guide for ease of function; but the group is private. 2. Every page with content will contain a link back to ENPublishing as appropriate. Will wait on Morrus

Morrus and darjr: Okay, I know I have activated the wiki setting in the campaign group, but when I went to save this page, I didn't see an option to associate it with the group. Should there be a drop-down box? I'm a bit confused by the whole process. Or do I have to create a book page first and associate that with the group?

  • 07:49 PM - reelo quoted Morrus in post We saw a Star War! Last Jedi spoiler thread
Please tell me that "SJW" doesn't stand for "Social Justice Warrior" in this sentence. It probably does. 😒 Let me just add that I thoroughly enjoyed the film. My generation (I was born in 1980) had their trilogy. Two, even. It's time for our children to have theirs. My 7yo loves Kylo Ren, Poe, Finn and Rey. With Han dead, Luke a ghost, and Leia certainly absent from the next installment, the slate is clean for new adventures. I've love Star Wars with all my heart since I was 10 or so, but I'm not angry nor salty about TLJ. "Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to." Sent from my Nexus 6P using EN World mobile app
  • 04:15 PM - vikeen12 quoted Morrus in post How will DnD / RPGs adapt to future technologies?
I also think that virtual environments, like using miniatures, will limit the play space. People will confine their imaginations to the capabilities of the space they're playing in. Spontaneity also suffers when the players choose a round path and you have prepped/presented a square environment. This is a legitimate concern. Especially early on in the AR / VR "revolution". Develeopers won't be able to make as many interesting animations and that will limit their effectiveness and our options in-game. I spend enough time in front of my devices during the week (including prepping for my campaign, mind you). But I truly enjoy the escape that a live D&D session provides from electronics. This is an occurring sentiment from my experience. I haven't thought alot about why I love physical RPGs, but this is definitely part of it. On a side note, removing my social from the twitter space and politics helped a lot too :). ... Who foresaw live streaming becoming a major form of enter...
  • 04:04 AM - pukunui quoted Morrus in post We saw a Star War! Last Jedi spoiler thread
So - the First Order. It’s just a roving gang of a half dozen Star Destroyers? Now commanded by a teenager with a temper? It kinda feels like the galaxy could just ignore the handful of people fighting each other.I know Ben *acts* like a teenager, but he's meant to be around 30 years old. Also, I got the impression that that fleet was just part of the First Order, not the whole thing. The opening crawl talks about how Snoke's "legions" rule the galaxy, and Poe et al refer to taking on *a* dreadnought (implying that the one they destroyed was not the only one). As for that last bit, it seems like the rest of the galaxy *is* ignoring the conflict (at least the parts not profiting from it). Leia's "allies" refused to come to her aid, after all.

  • 03:54 PM - doctorbadwolf quoted Morrus in post What does "murderhobo" mean to you?
But are they hobos? Generally not in my group’s games. They travel, certainly, but a travelled with money to sleep in a clean room in town, and supplies to camp reasonably comfortably when not near town, isn’t a “hobo” by any reasonable definition, IMO.
  • 10:58 AM - lxqueen quoted Morrus in post Patreon Reverses Disastrous Decision Which Harmed RPG Creators
It’s still the only major player in town right now, but I’m sure lots of RPG creators are keeping a close eye on the upcoming Drip from Kickstarter. Have you taken a look at Liberapay? Seems to be similar, and is run by a non-profit. Heard a few open-source software projects use it instead of Patreon.

I think you’ll find that of a lot of the folks here... I'm...I'm not sure but I THINK Morrus just insulted your mother. Hahahahahah, I'm pretty sure he meant age-wise (and I'm pretty sure you were being sarcastic) but still, off-topic much? ;)
  • 09:55 PM - Olaf the Stout quoted Morrus in post Patreon Reverses Disastrous Decision Which Harmed RPG Creators
It’s still the only major player in town right now, but I’m sure lots of RPG creators are keeping a close eye on the upcoming Drip from Kickstarter. I'm sure Kickstarter will be doing everything they can to get Drip out to market as soon as possible. They would be super happy that Patreon has given them a nice boost without them even doing anything. Even if it takes them a few months, I see a number of creators moving away from Patreon as soon as they can. Some bigger creators may even look to moving to their own platform if it is cost-effective.
  • 09:14 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted Morrus in post Walking Dead - it's back! [spoilers]
That's definitely an apt comparison. I think it requires more of an ensemble cast, though. Soaps weave the multitude of plots across different characters and character sets. The Walking Dead definitely has some of that, but the design of brutal deaths means we’re often left with second stringers in place of deceased favorite characters. There’s a reason why so many soap operas have brought countless characters back from seeming death so many times. It’s just more the soap opera model. Lots of story arcs, not one big one. It’s not like Doctor Who has an ending in mind, for example.
  • 08:58 PM - Cyrinishad quoted Morrus in post On Murderhobos
Yeah, that’s how I understand the term. PCs wandering around killing innocent NPCs is something else entirely. Characters with no home who kill orcs and stuff. This “murderhobo”. Regarding the term "Murderhobo", it has always held a negative connotation to me... because Murder is decidedly Evil... when killing is justified, it's not Murder... It isn't too surprising to me that the connotation and interpretation of the term has perhaps shifted from its original intent, to kind-of poke fun at the general style of many Sword & Sorcery Adventure style campaigns... I tend to simply call the folks that wander about killing evil monsters and looking for lost treasures... "Adventurers"... not good, not bad, just folks looking for adventures...
  • 08:17 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted Morrus in post Walking Dead - it's back! [spoilers]
I've heard the opposite, albeit that the end is a "get there when I get there" thing. Either way, not having an ending in mind can make for some bad TV - like what happened with Dexter. I thought Kirkman said there was no end planned. It’s not a single plot, it’s just an ongoing setting with lots of story arcs. There’s no overarching story arc other than “the world ended”.
  • 07:36 PM - Flexor the Mighty! quoted Morrus in post On Murderhobos
Yeah, that’s how I understand the term. PCs wandering around killing innocent NPCs is something else entirely. Characters with no home who kill orcs and stuff. This “murderhobo”. Yep, I'm confused. We mostly play Murderobo style, roaming the land from ancient temple to foul cavern in the earth, killing the evil forces there and loading up on their stuff. Slaughtering the villages is evil campaign stuff.
  • 04:48 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post How Did D&D Become a Best-Seller?
You know the joke is “Aaargh! Xanathar’s not fictional? What is WotC not telling us?!?!”, right? It’s not a serious discussion about book categories. :) I did end my comment, where I argued with myself, with YMMV and VWPBL. I didn't think it seemed like I was serious. :)
  • 05:04 AM - aramis erak quoted Morrus in post How Did D&D Become a Best-Seller?
Non fiction contains factual material. Fiction contains beholders. good luck convincing librarians to use that. D&D is "793.73 – Dungeons & Dragons" in the Dewey & melvil and several other related systems... in "Indoor Amusements"... along with all other RPGs, minis wargames, and family games. And books about the same. And Hoyle's Rules of Games.

By home-brew, I mean stuff you made yourself for your own game, not material published by a third party. The biggest work-load is stocking my magic shoppes, since there is next to zero official support that works for me. Sent from my C6603 using EN World mobile app

  • 01:20 AM - GreyLord quoted Morrus in post Xanathar’s Guide to Everything is the fastest-selling Dungeons & Dragons book of all time
While this theoretically *could* be true based on the lack of evidence we have, there's also no evidence to suggest that it is. None of us have the faintest idea how much money WotC or Paizo is making overall. We can make up numbers and multiply them together until the cows come home, but that's just meaningless in the absence of actual figures. And we don't have those. This is true, but we can KNOW the approximate size of the company in regards to how many employees they have. 3e and 4e supported more employees working than 5e does. Paizo supports more employees than 5e does. If something is selling so well, normally that implies one should expand, rather than contract (and normally in business you are expanding or contracting...staying put is basically equal to contracting). If it was doing as well as 3e did, we should expect them to have a rise to the number of employees they had, at least at the end of 4e. I haven't seen that yet. Paizo does very well from what I've seen, thu...

  • 11:52 PM - TwoSix quoted Morrus in post How Did D&D Become a Best-Seller?
Non fiction contains factual material. Fiction contains beholders. Considering even professional librarians don't have a clear system of delineating fiction and non-fiction, this is an argument that falls pretty rapidly into semantics. It's probably more important to note that books labeled fiction sell higher numbers than non-fiction books, so XgtE probably wouldn't have made the top if it was classified as fiction.
