You could try making the actual ship battle a narrative background element while the PCs themselves do something important in the battle. Maybe they have to board the enemy ship and get something while the cannonballs rain down and enemy sailors battle them in the lower decks.

I will generally just miss a show entirely, rather than commit piracy. Yeah. It then starts getting to having to pay close attention to each service and ask whether you're really getting enough content from them to justify the expense. CBS All Access is a fine example. I haven't watched any of Discovery, because it is not worth it to me to pay for a single show that gets mixed reviews.

Magic in WOIN is much more low-magic than the super-high magic of D&D. If you wanted to replicate D&D's magical prevalence and availability, you'd need to reduce the MP cost of magic in general across the board.

If you are a troll, or otherwise not in the dialogue in good faith, we don't need to tolerate your position. Yes, you are closer to death, but you are starting to pull out the stops, and capable of greater feats. The acid blood isn't meant to be a strong combat ability. If an ogre was dealing significant amounts of damage to foes every time it was hit, it would be very overpowered. It'll hurt maybe a peasant, but not a hero. Mooks are vulnerable to such things as they die with one hit.

There's an interesting bit of human psychology. If you have a resource, and are unlikely to get more of it, you hoard that resource. You never use it, because if you do, then you won't have it at that critical time. But then since you aren't in the habit of using it... you forget about it, and don't use it when you really should. So, you wind up with a chicken and egg thing - if the GM...

Printed, probably about 100 - I have periodically purged over the years, donating to good friends especially for books I haven't cracked open in 5 years or more. Digitally, I literally have thousands and thousands -- collective worth however is quite different because a lot of them I've picked up on Humble Bundles, Bundles of Holding, charity sales, etc. and I might have thousands of books which...

This pretty much fits me as well. In my case, it's about 75%/25% first person/third person, I prefer first person, but there are times where either I'm at a loss for specific words (I suck at seducing NPCs, I got no game ;)) or intent needs to be clearer.

It rose from the depths of a dozen years and more.... I switch back and forth, and it depends on context. In live-action play, it is mostly 1st person. At a tabletop, I try for mostly 1st person in in depicting the character's speech, and a mix when depicting action. Often enough there's a need to differentiate between the Character and the player, and then it is 3rd person - GM: "Are you...

And, surprising nobody, The Punisher and Jessica Jones are also now both cancelled. To clarify - Jessica Jones is ending after its third season airs. Which is nice. I dunno if they have a chance to somehow put a bow on the end of it.

So far, I've seen an ancestral guardian Barbarian, a Swashbuckler Rogue, A Hex blade warlock, and a Divine Soul Sorcerer. Of all of these, the Divine Soul was the most lackluster - but I think this has as much to do with the Sorcerer being slightly too short on spells known as anything. All subclasses I've seen so far live up to the other choices in the PH, and I haven't seen any that are just...

Morrus and darjr: Okay, I know I have activated the wiki setting in the campaign group, but when I went to save this page, I didn't see an option to associate it with the group. Should there be a drop-down box? I'm a bit confused by the whole process. Or do I have to create a book page first and associate that with the group?

Thanks for all your hard work last week, Morrus and darjr :) Welcome back! I re-upped my sub; I've been meaning to do it anyway! (And also, I'm hoping Zeitgeist 4e #5 comes out soon. ;)) -O This was up for free download while the site was down. I haven't played the previous adventures but I dled it anyway. It looks interesting.

  • 07:00 PM - iserith quoted Morrus in post Do you use skill challenges?
Oh, I never did 4E challenges as written. I highly, highly recommend running them as per the Rules Compendium if you're still playing D&D 4e. And making participation as compulsory as a combat challenge, plus using the standard D&D 4e initiative. It has a big effect on how the players build their characters.
  • 06:47 PM - iserith quoted Morrus in post Do you use skill challenges?
Yeah; mine is definitely a player-narrative slanted approach. I like to do that from time to time, and it's so easy to do impromptu. That would definitely be how I would do it in D&D 4e, but I don't feel it fits the D&D 5e paradigm, so I modified the skill challenge approach accordingly so that the skill challenge doesn't stand out from the rest of the resolution mechanics. If anyone wants to review D&D 4e skill challenges, I recommend reading the D&D 4e Essentials Rules Compendium and not any material on skill challenges that came out before that book.
  • 03:55 PM - Balesir quoted Morrus in post Cooperative Games with Traitor Mechanics?
I'm not a big boardgamer. I don't enjoy worker placement games much. But I found I really enjoyed Battlestar Galactica with it's player interaction, cooperation, and traitor mechanic. I'm looking for more games like that. Any ideas?Maybe try "The Resistance"? You are all resistance fighters, seeking to bring down a corrupt and tyrannical government. Except for the one(s?) who is a planted government agent, of course...

  • 05:45 PM - robus quoted Morrus in post Critical Role columnist needed for EN World
One 1,000-word article per week covering: -- News, scheduling information, events, and announcements -- Episode summaries and recaps -- Illustrative screenshot(s) Something that would be very helpful would be links into the video stream for certain key moments from the episode.
  • 05:04 PM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Critical Role columnist needed for EN World
Critical Role Season 2 Only* Darn. So you mean we can't quickly write up 115 past episode recaps for a quick $4,600? ;) What time does the article need posting on Friday? Are we talking by 10 AM EST or by the end of the day? That is a good question, especially as episodes can run to 11 or 12 PST. That would be some late nights if trying to get it out for the following morning.
  • 02:55 PM - Dungeonmastermark quoted Morrus in post You-Tube cracking down on RPG videos ?
How odd. Is that some kind of automated algorithm? What happens when it gets flagged? Does it get taken down? you get a notification that it was flagged, it then becomes unlisted.. If you appeal the decision ( like it did ) - it gets put back up until a human reviews the video and they make s final decision . Its a very strange process

This is not true. There is no obligation in any jurisdiction to sue people. Really? Could have sworn it was otherwise. Anyways, I stand corrected in that case.
  • 01:04 AM - Yaarel quoted Morrus in post The Favourite Official D&D Products Ranked
That is not the top 10 percentile if the average score is 74. Thatís not what that term means. Now I see where you are coming from. I am counting the average score as potentially 50, since a score of 0% or 1% was possible, even tho all of the products here are much better than that. D&D products elsewhere − such as among independent creations − might deserve very low scores. But so far, all the official products are reasonably good, and the core books are excellent.
  • 12:30 AM - Yaarel quoted Morrus in post The Favourite Official D&D Products Ranked
Aggregated scores by definition tend to indicate wider needs, not intrinsic quality. Scores track with sales fairly well. From what I understand, these are aggregated scores of *reviewers* who wrote reviews, that is critics. With regard to sales, players have a need for player content, thus PH and Xanathars will tend to see higher sales to meet the need, even if it would be of less quality. But the critic would evaluate it on other merits, besides raw need. To be fair, there is some overlap. For example, if a player content product was of noticeably poor quality, it wouldnt fulfill the need for it either. My main point here is, the critical reviews and the sales volume can be different for legitimate reasons.
  • 12:23 AM - Yaarel quoted Morrus in post The Favourite Official D&D Products Ranked
Not sure what you mean here. Nope. Average score for all products is 74%. I specifically mentioned PH, DMG, and MM. These are the core books. This is their rankings. 3. D&D 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide (92%) 5. D&D 5th Edition Monster Manual (90.5%) 6. D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook (90%) All of the core books are 90% and higher, meaning they are in the Ďtop 10 percentileí, which is a good foundation for the rest of the game.

No. I have no idea why that would happen. But you appear to have posted this, so you might need to be more specific? I was trying to post a comment to the most recent news article "Heroes in Shades of Gray" by lewpuls. I'll try again and see if it works now. EDIT: Nope - still not working.
  • 08:54 PM - Dannyboy7702 quoted Morrus in post ForgedAnvil D&D 5E Character Generator
Hi folks! We've received a DMCA takedown demand for this download from WotC's lawyers. I've already let ForgedAnvil know. I'll be dealing with it when I get back to work on Monday. Just keeping you all in the loop. THIS IS UTTER AND COMPLETE BS!!!!! Forged has spent his own time in developing a character sheet that works extremely well with D&D 5th Edition. Forged is a inventive and extremely talented, to create a digital character builder using Excel. But, I guess since D&D released their online digital character creator D&D beyond, they think that people shouldn't use homebrew character sheet, created from 3rd party creators. Forged isn't even charging for his CS. He is asking for beer donations!!!! FFS WotC, let the little guy create content!!!!
  • 06:33 PM - Art the DM quoted Morrus in post ForgedAnvil D&D 5E Character Generator
Hi folks! We've received a DMCA takedown demand for this download from WotC's lawyers. I've already let ForgedAnvil know. I'll be dealing with it when I get back to work on Monday. Just keeping you all in the loop. Of course, there goes another great tool. Just like Orcpub. They ought or offer ForgedAnvil a :):):):)ing job for doing much better work than any of the tools WotC makes available. I guess we always knew it was only a matter of time before the corporate hammer came down. Thank you ForgedAnvik for your contribution, you rock!
  • 03:35 PM - Corpsetaker quoted Morrus in post Coming Soon - Warriors of Waterdeep: a new Free to Play D&D mobile game
How do you "waste" a license? It's not like WoTC has a finite number of them to give out. If somebody comes to them and says "Hey, I'd like to make you some money by making this mobile game and paying you for the privilege", they'd have to be pretty insane to turn it down. Because if you're not careful your reputation can get damaged. *coughs Sword Coast Legends*

  • 10:50 PM - Kinematics quoted Morrus in post Spell Creation System
Without delving into your details, I've been around long enough to conclude any free-form spell design system will fall into one out of two categories: A) the unbalanced one. The PHB spells can be faithfully reproduced, but the system is wide open to powergaming and abuse. B) the restrained one. Costs are so heavy you really can't abuse the system. However, the iconic PHB spells are way out of reach. In other words, any balanced open system will be able to create scores of mediocre spells, just like most PHB spells. Well, I'm hoping my system can be considered relatively balanced, not because I'm trying to create a balanced system, but because I'm trying to reverse-engineer the system that WotC uses, and presumably they've done a lot more work towards making sure spells are balanced than I would ever be able to do. Creating unbalanced spells is easy. Just ignore the limits. If someone wants to go that way, there's nothing I can do to stop them. However I don't feel that these ru...

  • 09:12 PM - mach1.9pants quoted Morrus in post Question abut AiME's "Don't leave the Path"
Nobody played this adventure, then? No I haven't but found this http://forums.cubicle7.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=8440 There's a fair bit of discussion about it on those forums - I think it's about of an anomaly maybe, 5e journey rules aren't as well integrated as The One Ring rules.
  • 02:49 PM - CapnZapp quoted Morrus in post Spell Creation System
Elements of Magic. http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/2554/Elements-of-Magic-Revised?it=1 For 3.5 and Pathfinder, and also powers the magic system in WOIN. Tweaking it for 5E wouldn't be difficult; we might even do it one day, if we have time. Thanks, that's the one! And the writer's name (Ryan Nock) did consist of two words where the first begins with an "R" :p I didn't know it survived until this day - that it's used in a contemporary system is great since that means more feedback. *thumbs up*

I haven't wiped the database? Unless you mean when we moved to the vBulletin platform back in 2002? Man, that's going back a while! I can't remember anything from 2002! :) Yeah back when this was Eric Noah's 3E site.
