In the Battletech and Mechwarrior universe, someone did calculations and figured out that mechs as drawn are actually less dense than water. My headcanon for ZEITGEIST is that Borne's made of adamantine that was magically alloyed with other metals, sort of like how adding a bit of carbon to iron makes steel. Without magic he'd collapse, but he's so suffused with magic he's impossible to dispel.

Define "good". For example, if I am having one PC face off agianst one NPC, anything particularly complicated, or that will take up a whole lot of time focusing on how many vodka shots one player makes while the others sit on their hands waiting for their compatriot to become staggeringly drunk would not be "good". We wouldn't want to make one person the focus of the action for an entire...

That's okay. Understanding may be achievable. Consider - fights are not the only thing in a D&D game. If a player (or group of players) is really interested in some aspect of the game other than fights, then maybe having the fights be deadly is not leading the players to their fun very well.

That is phenomenal to hear. I love that there were almost equal numbers of male and female interested - it really is a different world for RPGs these days, for the better. The DMing is likely to be your biggest problem, it always is -- more Marines than Master Chiefs. :)

In the same vein, I have been eyeing a number of the Artificer class takes to bundle with the Eberron stuff - All the ratings for them are pretty much the same, and I'm hard pressed to buy...

I often think it's too easy to get into the TARDIS. A TARDIS is supposed to be the most advanced type of ship in the universe, so teleporting onto it shouldn't be easy. I wonder if she gave Kerblam! permissions or something?

Um, pemerton? You don't get to say what the OP meant. Really, deciding that the OP should follow *your* use of the terms is a bit on-the-nose ironic in a thread largely *about questioning definitions*. Please, if his form does not seem coherent, rather than tell him he is wrong, ask questions probing where your differences lie, hm? I think you'll find it far more constructive.

I think it might be more clear to say, a prescriptivist thinks we have rules for language that we must follow. A descriptivist feels the rules describe the language as it currently is[, and that as use changes, the rules will change. There is a better view, IMHO. Right now, short term, if you want to be understood, you should follow the rules. Long term, it is empirically shown that...

Not necessarily, no. Specifically, there are games where you do not take on a role of one of the characters and all players have sway over all characters within the narrative. This would not be a role-playing game, but would be a story-telling game. You see, this is a problem with making definitions - you need to consider the *entire space* within which you are making your definition. ...

Great list! I agree with you on Forgetful and Spendthrift. You can use skills with any attribute as long as the GM agrees, so intimidation and Disfigured would be a good combo for a strong character. A STR (intimidation) check with the disfigured trait would be a good combo.

That being said... "the rules are descriptive" is insufficient as a definition. If nothing else, it fails to differentiate role-playing games from story-telling games, which I expect we would find are also descriptive. It probably also fails to differentiate from some forms of simulation games - like SimCity, where within a domain, you are largely allowed to do whatever you darn well feel like....

I think pointing out that there are some actions that are not allowed is missing the point. Yes, my character doesn't have the wings, spells, or magic items that allow them to fly, so they cannot fly. That doesn't make the game suddenly 100% prescriptive. I think the central point is still there - if you are playing chess, you have a list of allowed moves, and *everything else* is...

To me it comes down to presentation. If the party goes into an area that is known to be fraught with heinous, over the top peril, than I would expect no surprise when said peril occurs. But I would't throw such a threat if they were just doing a diplomatic mission for example, as the peril would feel more arbitrary to me at that point.

The key to the Solar is its 150 ft flying speed. Effectively unless you have a means of immobilizing it, it can kite indefinitely, or it can just teleport back 120 feet if necessary. So for an Empryean vs a Solar it comes down to Bolt vs Slaying Longbow. Overall, bolt has a +3 attack advantage (+2, and the Solar's AC is 1 lower) and gets to attack twice through the legendary action. Slaying...

I will disagree to a point here. Again, we are talking about a creature that is supposed to be extremely difficult, maybe nigh impossible for a party to defeat. This to me is the equivalent of a party asking for a god's personal password and wondering why the knowledge check DC is outside of their possible values. Further, an "impossible" roll does serve a few functions. One, it lets other...

As I said, watch surrogates. Also, if you don't want this stuff in your game, just disallow it. Come up with a reason. Pemberton has secret knowledge that they don't manage to replicate during the span of the campaign. Like, we figured out how to make nukes 70 years ago, but some folks still have a hard time doing it. It's okay if the PCs can't do everything.

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

So if you have a Kickstarter for a new D&D 5E book, you may put it in the 5E forum instead (that's instead, not as-well-as). If the forums end up being...

Agreed. I feel like it should be several adventures worth of planning and prep to be able to go toe to toe with such a creature. If your facing something 10 CR higher than you, you should get curb stomped in most cases.

Yeah, what got me thinking about it is, "what's the difference between, 'never understood what you are saying,' and 'never heard you say it in the first place?' " Recognition of the command sounds like it's key to the magic of the spell.

Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAW: Sounds like it wouldn't matter. They are affected by the Geas, they take the damage. RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Now now Taran, you started this tangent by noting frustration with DMs who ignore dodging and spells like sanctuary. Overlord is basically saying turnaround is fair play, that as much as DMs may use in game knowledge to make their monsters more tactical, players can do it too.

I don't know if this is in similar vein or not, but I used to play with a guy who for some reason, consciously or not, decided to "one-up" every PC I played by playing a PC with the same party role, but with lots of rules-tweaking to make the PC better. It was kind of obvious after a while: (1) I would create a PC, (2) he would get tired of the PC he was playing and retire them, and (3) a new PC...

Lets say a person was subjected to a GEAS, but then shortly after their memory was modified so they don't remember getting the GEAS effect. Would they have any knowledge or innate way to avoid the actions restricted by the GEAS, or would they just stumble into it and take the damage?

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

  • 04:26 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post [UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers
The Guild is great for people doing book design as a hobby. But asking them to compete with people doing RPG book design as a living or as a business is problematic. The alternative to the DMsGuild isn't DriveThru or Kickstarter. It's people's fan blogs. It's Reddit. It's Pintrest. It's zero money. After all, 5e and the OGL was around for eighteen months before the Guild but very few people took the plunge to self publishing on DriveThru or Kickstarter. But isn't that the point? That the DMs Guild is meant to be a place for hobbyists to make a little bit of money for products they would have made anyway, but NOT a place for actual design businesses to peddle their wares? For actual for-profit design businesses they should be using things like the OGL, Kickstarter, and Patreon (like Morrus does) so that they have more control of how and what they produce for their business? Including things like branding, logos, original art, cartography, what percentage of the money they bring in and the like? I mean I can get that there's no real "intermediate" step between DMs Guild, and Kickstarter/OGL. A hobbyist gets the experience of trying publish using DMs Guild and tries to build a name for themselves... but the jump to then trying to run a Kickstarter in order to actually become a for-profit design house is a big one. There's no place in the middle where "the best of the best" can go to receive the same amount of viewership that DMs Guild grants them, while not needing as many up-front "fans" or name-recognition in order to successfully pull off an OGL/KS. So anything that keeps DMs Guild itself from becoming a more intermediate step for those writers is saddening and I can understand the frustration. But I don't think that's really what DMs Guild was ever meant to be ...

  • 03:49 PM - Tormyr mentioned Morrus in post Suggest the enemy for my 5E war campaign?
The campaign guide for 5e War of the Burning Sky should be coming out within a week or two. It contains a warfare supplement that Morrus created for the 3.5 version. The encounters are set around specific tasks the PCs can complete that influence the battle as a whole such as taking a strategic point, assassinating a high-level enemy official, defending against an enemy surge, etc.

  • 05:55 AM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post A 308-Page Paperback WOIN Core Rulebook For Under $10!
Can someone tell me what all these acronyms stand for Truthfully, I only know some of them. WOIN stands for ďWhatís OLD is NEW,Ē which is a lovely pun used as the general name for the generic system that Morrus designed. OLD is the fantasy incarnation of WOIN, NEW is the sci-fi version, and NOW is the modern/contemporary equivalent. Despite OLD, NEW, and NOW being structured like acronyms, I donít think Iíve ever seen an official statement on what they stand for, and any guesses I might have would just be pure conjecture on my part.

The new Facebook/Twitter/Print/etc. buttons that won't stay hidden are quite annoying! They cover the text of the article. After hiding them, as soon as I scroll the article they unhide. Very much agreed! @Morrus. just a clarification, Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are not the same brand. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it would be beneficial for newcomers to either IP to not become confused.

Morrus: Legend of the Five Rings 5th Edition won't use the classical Roll and Keep dice (d10s) pool system of the previous four editions, but a modified Roll and Keep with proprietary, narrative dice (with 6 or 12 sides), similar - but not identical - to those introduced by Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition and then employed in the various Star Wars RPGs by Fantasy Flight Games (and now in their Genesys "universal" system).

  • 12:41 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Taking Nominees for Most Anticipated RPG of 2018
Morrus: Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne, is not out yet, not even for the backers, as far as I can tell. Delta Green has the Handler's Guide out in PDF. City of Mist has the Starter Set out in both psysical and PDF form and the Core Rulebook out in PDF. Correct about World of Lazarus being a setting for Modern AGE. Sentinel Comics RPG has only the starter set out. The rulebook is due out in 2018. Don't know if it counts. Regarding the Flash Gordon RPG for Savage Worlds: it's not a fully-independent game, but it needs the Savage Worlds rules which aren't included in neither of the books, so it shouldn't count for the purpose of this poll (unless for some reason this rule doesn't apply to SW products... in fact, Savage Rifts made the top of the poll two years ago and it wasn't an independent ruleset too).

  • 12:47 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post Nathan Stewart Promises WotC will do something with new settings in 2018
And the whole point of going OGL was so that other companies could put out new campaign settings so that they didn't have to. Morrus even has a thread on the boards here that lists all the various campaign settings that have already been made for 5E. If you can't find something there you're looking for... then it's pretty much guaranteed that your desire and want is so narrow that WotC sure isn't going to scratch your itch, even if they *do* eventually produce a completely new setting at some point. That's just simply odds.

  • 03:40 PM - Xaelvaen quoted Morrus in post Drinking Problem
I have never heard a drink referred to as a ďmild alcoholic beverageĒ before! Sounds like what Data from Star Trek would call it! :) I'll consider that a compliment sir, and say thank you! I'm not a fan of beer, more specifically, so I get those nifty flavored drinks; Mike's Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice, etc, and they have about as much alcohol as kid's grape juice past its expiration date, so yeah - mild alcoholic beverage heh. Besides, the Kentucky Bourbon isn't for DnD, and going blind from the local Moonshine wouldn't work well at all for DMing.
  • 03:16 PM - TregMallin quoted Morrus in post Dragon Reflections #13 - How to win D&D!
Oops! 101879 Mild curiosity -- this was 1978, and it was 1977 when Saul Zeantz sued TSR claiming D&D was a LotR derivative. TSR settled out of court and changed a lot of the Tolkien terminology, but I wonder if that ties in to this strenuous public denial that Tolkien was a primary influence? The same Saul Zeantz who threatened to sue John Fogerty for ripping off his own work with Credence Clearwater Revival (the rights to which were owned by Zeantz) in the song "The Old Man Down the Road". Fogerty wrote a song called "Zanz Kant Danz" as a dig against him. He threatened another lawsuit and eventually it became "Vanz Kant Danz".

Iím sure youíll like something one day. Itís gotta be tough. It is. My dislike of Macs dates back to the 90's and we were gamers and/or computer nerds who liked programming them (I was not good at programming). I liked Amigas and what became PC's, there were also things like Amstrads and Archimedes around. Had makes at school but everyone had Amiga or PCs at home. They made a bit more sense to me before windows 95 came out and you had things like DOS or pre windows 3.1. Over here though Macs were expensive, underpowered, and all the good games were on things like Amiga and PC. Computers in the early 90's were about the same price they are now (not adjusted for inflation). Macs cost even more than that. I don't think I have actually even one since the late 90's come to think of it.

  • 03:52 PM - Larrin quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder: Kingmaker Is An Isometric RPG Experience
One thing I never understand bout these games -- they have voice actors do all the NPCs, but when your character talks it's just text. I wonder why they don't have voice actors do that, too? You already have to select your character's voice during character creation. I'd rather not have my character read their lines, especially if its branching dialogue. I've already read the dialogue choice I want to make, I don't need to hear my character slowly drawl their way through a text I already read. I would only skip it anyway. The Mass Effect series(several of them if not all) did full dialogue for all the main character's responses. It worked okay, but so often I would just skip it because I didn't need to here the whole line again. Then they did a thing where sometimes they'd just have a summary of the dialogue; you'd choose option that said "Doubt her" and your character would say a full sentence of two, thus removing the desire to skip the dialogue. That almost worked except that some...
  • 12:03 PM - Grimstaff quoted Morrus in post The Latest Pathfinder 2 Playtest Update Has Dropped!
It's a playtest program, not a finished game. That's exactly what the process is for. If you're judging your interest in Pathfinder 2 on the playtest, you're kinda missing the point. If you don't want to participate in the playtest process (and that's a perfectly valid position) just wait till it comes out next year and decide then. While there may be tweaks, I don't think the central conceit of the new edition: building a character, Lego-style, out of a bewildering selection of ancestry, background, and class feats, is going anywhere.

Two of my friends played with me all the way through Throne of Bhaal. The first slot is still the main character for storyline purposes. You could have up to six players. If you had less than six, you could still pick up NPCs up to the six slot limit. We only used Imoen for the most part since we didn't have a thief.

Basically just like the Baldur's Gate games, but with better graphics and Pathfinder rules. At least so far. Sounds good.

I didnít even know Baldurs Gate could do that. I only ever played them on the PlayStation II, but both of the ones we had could be 2 player coop.

Basically just like the Baldur's Gate games, but with better graphics and Pathfinder rules. At least so far. "Just like the Balder's Gate" games" except single player only. Since two-player coop was my favorite aspect of the BG games, that's really a deal breaker for me. The closer I can get to having a video game feel like a tabletop experience, the happier I am. Given the apparent adherence to Pathfinder rules and setup, the lack of coop is puzzling to me.

That was a different thing. Not sure what the status is on that. This game is the result after a fashion, the mmo fell apart and the company went under. The license was snapped up and the new company made the Kingmaker RPG.
  • 11:54 AM - Aldarc quoted Morrus in post The Latest Pathfinder 2 Playtest Update Has Dropped!
It's a playtest program, not a finished game. That's exactly what the process is for. If you're judging your interest in Pathfinder 2 on the playtest, you're kinda missing the point. If you don't want to participate in the playtest process (and that's a perfectly valid position) just wait till it comes out next year and decide then.I am participating in the playtest, but I can also recognize from feedback from my table that this has been a major turn-off. I am not trying to convince others that they are wrong for liking this change, but I am expressing, and have expressed, my dissatisfaction with this change.

Hopefully. But you never know on the internet! It is a very knowing joke. The show was fairly progressive, and despite the absurdity of relationships between cartoon pigs and elephants, magic dogs and rainbow unicorns, etc...there was some "controversy": A small subset of conservative Americans complained to the network when a season 3 episode "What Was Missing" and related online short "Mathematical!" suggested lesbian subtext between a vampire-fiend and sentient candy. "Mathematical!" got pulled, an employee got fired, and denials were issued. The staff bided their time, and then in the season 10 series finale paired the vampire-fiend and sentient candy off with romantic dialogue and a kiss.
