Pretty good episode tonight. It was a pretty good take on the Enemy Mine plot. The Space Orcs were an interesting element too. And the B plot with Gordon was handled well too, I'd say maybe even better than Trek usually does.

Using the standard array and the "default" equipment given for each class and background, you can make a 5e level 1 character in approximately 10 minutes. I can't think of getting any faster while still maintaining a sense of meaningful choice about your character. For some, the existing character options, even including multiclassing and feats, are still too small. Personally, I'd really love to...

We have had informal agreements aplenty over the years. I'm currently running an Ashen Stars game, in which there are technically formal contract relationships involved as being members of a LASER crew. We most definitely do *not* write it out in full, as it is more like a modern legal document, with scads of sub-clauses. The party's business expert has, on more than one occasion, used his...

I wasn't the one who said, "the ultimate point of character creation isnít about character custimization but instead itís about having a character you can play in game." If it is just about having "a character," then why not just do it over and over again? Make an absolute statement, and reap the rewards of pure logic. Leave yourself some wiggle room, and you can avoid such traps.

Then there's no need for a creation step at all. Just play the same character again. The sheet's right there. Or, pull a pregen from the internet. Takes maybe 30 seconds.

Rolling in order only creates viable characters in a statistical sense. So, while decision points are slow, in the long run it probably beats having to roll in order several times before a character is generated that doesn't die when an orc sneezes on it. It is a question of whether you front-load your time expenditure or not. I prefer to do the job right once, rather than do quick...

The aesthetics, the sounds, the styles, Palpatine and Vader, stormtroopers, Star Destroyers, the architecture, even the mouse droids, the whole package ... itís just *got* something that the bad guys in other eras lack. And the balance of ďDavid v GoliathĒ is exactly right. So I enjoy stuff set in that era.

Fair, though as I recall, previous versions of the 5e SRD had more limited content, more akin to what's in Basic. I glanced at the license, but I didn't probe into the content yesterday. If you wanna be really picky, WotC uses version 1.0a, released in 2000. I was not confident enough that *NO OTHER* versions existed out there to assert such.

Classically - illusions are what he does. Well, again classically, there's a group of extradimensional villains from the comics called the Elementals. We have the basic question of whether they are actually here, or if they are something Mysterio cooked up for him to be a hero fighting. I don't expect other cameos of note, as they won't want to reveal who survives Avengers:...

If you want an example of a world without an open gaming license, look back historically to TSR (owner of D&D prior to Wizards of the Coast) and their positions on D&D compatible content in the early and mid-1990s -- it was an environment where they insisted that anything that included even terminology now common in the genre (such as phrases like "hit points" or "armor class") became property of...

Her personal goal is conquest for the sake of conquest, and she's just using Coaltongue's death as a justification to rally her people into 'finding the ones responsible.' The OGL isn't the "3E" OGL or the "5E" OGL. There's just the OGL. And it hasn't been dumped, because it's non-rescindable. Both 3E and 5E have had some (but not all) of their content released under it, as have many other games. One of the main purposes of the OGL, as Ryan Dancey - its architect - said: it means that D&D is here to stay. Nothing can make it go away, not even the whims of a...

*Basic* 5e was released under the OGL, which to a quick scan doesn't appear particularly different from past OGLs. Rather than changing the control by changing the OGL, they did so by limiting content in the SRD - the basic mechanics are all there, but many of the classes are missing. So, anyone can write to the system, and even do something interesting with large changes (like Mutants and...

Hold on a second. Let us be clear - with a finite, comprehensible ruleset, there *will* be some options that are better than others. Full stop. Those that like doing deep dives into rules options *will* find them. No game designer can avoid this. It follows, then, that the game can't/shouldn't be designed around preserving all the concepts for optimizers, as it is not a tractable task. ...

I'm going to guess that a simple photographs of what already exists, a scene that could be seen by someone walking by, is *not* going to be considered transformative. After all, the architect and the artist probably were considering the setting, so the "juxtaposition" is their thought before it is the photographer's. For it to be transformative, you need to take a *small* segment of it, and...

You can do the analysis considering two travelers - one who passes by Earth at 0.8 C on their way to Alpha Centauri, the other passing by Earth at the same moment going 0.9c for the same trip. Let try an example to ensure we are all reading the table right. So lets assume you need a 5 or better to hit, and do an average of 10 dmg before the feat is applied. So the formula is 5.5 - .25X. So that 5.5 - .25 * 10 = 5.5 - 2.5 = 3. So this means that my average damage increases by 3. Now where I'm confused is when you defined average damage. I like them not different amounts, but for different reasons, and at one time I might want one more, and a different one at a different time, depending on my mood. No static ranking possible, for me.

I'm not clear from where you're getting the reasoning of "they add but don't subtract," because I'm missing it from the PH. Instead, it says Illusion spells "...deceive the senses or minds of others. They cause people to see things that are not there, to miss things that are there..." "miss things that are there" is pretty clearly "subtracting" to me. Even then, you seem to be taking the...

A lot of the reasoning for extremely limited illusion school spells I first saw back in the AD&D days, when due to lack of clearly defined boundaries, illusions ran roughshod over DMs' games because players would argue all sorts of insane abilities for illusions. The backlash seems to be a reaction out of concern that illusions can duplicate other more powerful spells, but to me, unreasonably so....

It depends on whether you were using that very abusive Unearthed Arcana system, where you rolled 9d6 (keep the best three) for your INT, etc. Most of the time, our groups used the ones from the DMG, most often either 3d6 12 times (keep best six scores) or 4d6 for each score, drop lowest.

I have to agree -- in 1e, sleep was keyed to hit dice (which never change) instead of to hit points (which constantly change), meaning in D&D5 you can whittle a foe into sleep territory. Get them down to their last 20 or 30 hit points, and you can end the fight early. Not to mention, darts were quite frankly crap in the 1e days, 3 attacks or not. A whopping average of 3 to 5 damage or so --...

If they can be brought back to life, it follows that they weren't really dead while frozen. Only *mostly* dead. So, the soul has been sitting there, locked in the body, waiting to be thawed. If it is immortal, a few years as an ice cube shouldn't be too bad.... right? Right? {insert pitch for horror-movie with people waking up from cryofreeze with angry souls driven mad by sensory...

Oh, you misunderstand. My wife ended up with Amazon Prime by accident (literally, it was an accident - she was placing an order when one of our cats jumped in her lap, and distracted, she went through the wrong checkout flow). But, she realized that the shipping features more than pay for themselves if she uses them for her work. So, it is a winner because I get access to ST: Disco as a...

  • 03:49 PM - Tormyr mentioned Morrus in post Suggest the enemy for my 5E war campaign?
The campaign guide for 5e War of the Burning Sky should be coming out within a week or two. It contains a warfare supplement that Morrus created for the 3.5 version. The encounters are set around specific tasks the PCs can complete that influence the battle as a whole such as taking a strategic point, assassinating a high-level enemy official, defending against an enemy surge, etc.

I had to create all the Elena player Characters and Monsters, but it was pretty easy. End result they loved it. Morrus, if there is a place to put Fan made materials for No Thank You Evil! please let me know or I can create a section and upload what I have already created.

  • 05:55 AM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post A 308-Page Paperback WOIN Core Rulebook For Under $10!
Can someone tell me what all these acronyms stand for Truthfully, I only know some of them. WOIN stands for ďWhatís OLD is NEW,Ē which is a lovely pun used as the general name for the generic system that Morrus designed. OLD is the fantasy incarnation of WOIN, NEW is the sci-fi version, and NOW is the modern/contemporary equivalent. Despite OLD, NEW, and NOW being structured like acronyms, I donít think Iíve ever seen an official statement on what they stand for, and any guesses I might have would just be pure conjecture on my part.

The new Facebook/Twitter/Print/etc. buttons that won't stay hidden are quite annoying! They cover the text of the article. After hiding them, as soon as I scroll the article they unhide. Very much agreed! @Morrus. just a clarification, Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are not the same brand. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it would be beneficial for newcomers to either IP to not become confused.

Morrus: Legend of the Five Rings 5th Edition won't use the classical Roll and Keep dice (d10s) pool system of the previous four editions, but a modified Roll and Keep with proprietary, narrative dice (with 6 or 12 sides), similar - but not identical - to those introduced by Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition and then employed in the various Star Wars RPGs by Fantasy Flight Games (and now in their Genesys "universal" system).

  • 12:41 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Taking Nominees for Most Anticipated RPG of 2018
Morrus: Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne, is not out yet, not even for the backers, as far as I can tell. Delta Green has the Handler's Guide out in PDF. City of Mist has the Starter Set out in both psysical and PDF form and the Core Rulebook out in PDF. Correct about World of Lazarus being a setting for Modern AGE. Sentinel Comics RPG has only the starter set out. The rulebook is due out in 2018. Don't know if it counts. Regarding the Flash Gordon RPG for Savage Worlds: it's not a fully-independent game, but it needs the Savage Worlds rules which aren't included in neither of the books, so it shouldn't count for the purpose of this poll (unless for some reason this rule doesn't apply to SW products... in fact, Savage Rifts made the top of the poll two years ago and it wasn't an independent ruleset too).

  • 12:47 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post Nathan Stewart Promises WotC will do something with new settings in 2018
And the whole point of going OGL was so that other companies could put out new campaign settings so that they didn't have to. Morrus even has a thread on the boards here that lists all the various campaign settings that have already been made for 5E. If you can't find something there you're looking for... then it's pretty much guaranteed that your desire and want is so narrow that WotC sure isn't going to scratch your itch, even if they *do* eventually produce a completely new setting at some point. That's just simply odds.

  • 02:38 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Seems a lot of people agree that Attack of the Clones is the worst. So much so that they keep calling it The Clone Wars instead! Derp to many clones. We have Attack of the clones, The Clone Wars, Clone Wars, and The Clone Wars (animated). Apparently the big problem with The Last Jedi was there was no overall plan for episodes VII-IX so the director was allowed to more or less do whatever he wanted and IMHO did a poor job on following up on some of the plot hooks of the TFA. There was a lot of speculation about Snoke for example, but nope they Boba Fett'ed him. TFA was really good, not exactly original though. And they killed off Luke to early (should have been episode IX if at all), and now with Carrie's death all of the OT main characters/actors are dead. And theres still some lingering bad will online over burning the old legends stuff and then reintroducing it but worse (Thrawn for example). I got a buzz at the theatre from Rogue One/TFA and after TLJ it kinda felt like 1999 again w...
  • 02:29 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
I'm not thinking dogs and monkeys, though - I'm thinking cockroaches and jellyfish. Crocodiles, although they have changed, have been around for about 85M years. Lice, some crabs, and a ton of sea-creatures. Heck, there's a reasonable possibility is that it's our intelligence which will wipe us out, and leave us with a pretty short footprint compared to many unintelligent species, making intelligence a misstep in the evolutionary chain, not the apex of it. This. We can adapt to the environment though so short of poisoning the atmosphere or the ocean we on't wipe ourselves out even if global warming go up by 2 or 3 degrees. I'm not sure we even have enough nukes to cause an extinction level event. That being said if we have 10 billion+ people and the resources to support 2 billion its fairly obvious what will happen. We won't sent colonists to Mars, bullets are much cheaper. Also gonna suck for anyone who is in semi tropical or warmer areas of the Earth.

  • 01:36 PM - Ryujin quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
If that were true there would be plenty more intelligent species on Earth. The truth is, intelligence is definitely not needed for survival. There are species on this planet which predate us and will likely outlast us. When it comes to evolutionary survivability, we are not the top of the pyramid. Maxperson might be considering intelligence to start at a level much less than what humans possess. From the standpoint of tool using intelligence, evolution may ultimately decide it was a bad idea and we'll be gone. When you get to a tool using level that allows you to screw with the environment that keeps you alive you either get smarter, in a different sense, or go extinct. I've read some compelling theories that postulate the rise of multiple sentient species is suppressed by the competition between them. That, ultimately, one wins out and the other(s) disappear. If there isn't significant geological isolation, you can't really have more than one (in theory).

  • 11:53 PM - TrippyHippy quoted Morrus in post Today's The Last Day Of Voting For The Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2019!
Sorry, I canít add things to the list. They need to have been nominated in the previous stage. Besides, voting ends in a couple of days. I think the issue with Cyberpunk was that it was nominated as Cyberpunk 2077, but was removed on the grounds that there was little evidence of any actual development. However, as pointed out in the link above, there is apparently development of Cyberpunk: Red which is from the same company but is set at an earlier date in the setting.

  • 08:11 AM - FitzTheRuke quoted Morrus in post One Page Adventure: The Business of Emotion
Yeah. The issue is that maps take up a *lot* of space, and so they need to be really necessary to make the cut. I think that can be dealt with as a separate issue. One-page adventures is great. It's *also* nice to have lots of really good generic (but exciting) location maps. Taverns. Streets. Caves. Roads. Forrest clearings. All of 'em would work here.

  • 10:30 PM - 77IM quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
I didn't mean to imply that you were. You asked: What would you want to see in such a thing? (Assuming such a thing is a thing you might want to see). Harper's style (notably his use of random tables to generate things quickly) has worked well for me in the past and I might want to see it in one-page adventures. I absolutely love the idea of one-page adventures and I think 5E is an excellent system for them. My dream is for there to be a "fourth core book" that is just full of 1-page and 2-page adventures. So you show up to run a game with zero prep, but you've got the PHB, MM, DMG, a stack of pregen characters and/or blank sheets, plus a the big book of mini-adventures. (I was hoping the Mini-Dungeon Tome would be this, but it doesn't quite work for me, for a number of reasons. I think the approach you're taking above is closer to what I am looking for.)
  • 06:41 PM - 77IM quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
So I whipped this together super-quick just as a sort of concept piece. I think it can be improved. I took Paul Oklesh's adventure for EN5ider and tried to distill the most important parts of it down to one page. It's an 11-page adventure, so this is basically the very core of it. My layout skills are mediocre at best. 103390 Quick feedback: - The design/layout/formatting looks great! But it's kind of busy and hard to read. I think you should expect people to print out one-page adventures, so the bulk of the body text should be black-on-white, and not diagonal. - I like prose with scannable elements. The bold monster names (standard in 5e) are a great example. I like that you've made NPC names ALL CAPS, although it appears inconsistent, and I think there might be better treatments you could apply, like SMALL CAPS or underline or even bold italics color. - "Key Locations" and "Other Places" seem like odd categorizations to me. I'd probably have a box for "The Village of Lanidor" an...

What do you mean by different desktop displays? I think the "latest news" scroll on the right displays when I switch to desktop now, but it's not there when I go to a bookmarked page? But maybe that's only the case when I'm going to bookmarked Subscriptions page? EDIT: In any event, the page used to autosize to the posts themselves, but now I have to enlarge to exclude the "latest posts" etc.

  • 12:16 AM - Sadras quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
What would you want to see in such a thing? 0. Adventure/Session Name 1. Setting the Scene - a brief description, key notes/NPCs 2. The Event - introduces the conflict/quest - could be a singular or combination of the pillars. 3. Interesting Features - terrain/weather conditions, monsters, DCs...etc 4. Small Map (only if necessary) 5. Conclusion Adventure Name: We're the Rats Setting the Scene [Name] Two-story tavern. Mid-late evening. Bitterly cold winter's day. Handful of warmly dressed patrons. Dim light. Roaring fire. Staple diet is ale, hot soup and bread. [Name] NPC and singular word descriptors. Innkeeper's dog. Social encounter which provides leads for characters' goals. Perhaps PCs notice girl. The Event A gust of wind bursts into the tavern, disturbing the common room as 3 shifty looking characters enter. The innkeeper's dog barks nervously at the strangers. The central figure, a scrawny man with a wickedly long nose and beady eyes sniffs the air in front of him and eyes out ...

  • 05:16 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted Morrus in post Monsters & Weapons: Two Hardcover D&D Books For Kids Coming In 2019
When I was a kid, this sort of thing would totally be up my alley. I remember pouring over illustrations and photos of medieval weaponry, loving the Arms & Equipment guide and Shadowrunís Street Samurai Catalog. Heck, as a 40-something, it still sounds pretty cool. This guide includes detailed illustrations of the weapons, armor, clothing, and other equipment that fighters use, and offers the tools young, aspiring adventurers need for learning how to build their own characters, including sample profiles, a flowchart to help decide what type of warrior to be, and brainstorming challenges to start thinking like an adventurer whether on your own or in the midst of an exciting quest with friends and fellow players.
  • 02:32 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
The replication is what makes it spread like a virus, making the coverage get exponentially faster. Like that doubling the grains of rice on a chessboard thing ó but even more so, because each makes a few dozen copies rather than just one. Oh, I understand that. However, if you're a race that is that advanced, aging if it was ever a problem to begin with, has probably been conquered. If imperfect replication is going to be an issue, slow it down a bit. Time is on your side. :)

  • 03:17 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post Has WotC saturated the published adventure market or are the two latest adventures not very popular?
It does feel like a sudden genera narrative reversal from fans! 2 books wasnít enough, but 4 is too much. I guess the target is very specifically 3 books then? :) It makes sense in light of WotC previous statements that three a year was chosen because their market research showed it to be ideal for customers. Given that, it isn't odd that people who are happy with that pace might get weary of a faster pace.

I guess the target is very specifically 3 books then? :) The Holy Number shall be 3. 2 is right out unless followed by 3. Thou shall pull forth thy billfold and count on to Wotc the number of 49 dollars for it is a holy number. Then thou shall raid thy neighbors piggy bag for the holy number of 4 pennies, 3 quarters, 2 nickels, and 1 dime. Thou shall enjoy thy hardcover or thou shall be banished from the community to play Candyland with thou younger cousins for the rest of thy holidays.
  • 02:23 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
The ďour knowledge of the universe is incomplete, therefore you may not assert anythingĒ is pretty much a conversation ender. If we canít assert anything, whatís the point of even talking? I feel like it must be a logical fallacy, too, but Iím not familiar enough with all the common fallacies to say for sure. Closely followed by ďscientists sometimes revise their hypotheses, so scientists canít assert anythingĒ. Which you also used. Theyíre both largely nothing-statements. :) I'm not saying we can't assert anything. I'm just saying that we should be qualifying our assertions with at least a "At our current level of understanding X is/isn't possible.", rather than just declaring something impossible.

  • 02:33 AM - D1Tremere quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
It has occurred on 100% of all planets that we know of that contain life. So right now, itís looking very probable! It has occurred on 100% of the planets that we know of which contain life, but that unfortunately makes for a sample size of 1, which isn't very useful for predicting anything. Also, it has only happened here once that we are aware of, and only in a small window of time. We could be an unstable evolutionary track. One thing that makes the conversation more difficult is the complexity of the definition of intelligence. What is often referred to as one thing has become increasingly a matter of multiple constructs. What we usually seem to be talking about is abstract thought, coupled with impulse control and object permanence. Creatures that can recognize themselves as distinct beings, relate a concept in their mind with real world counterparts, and delay gratification based on such internal processes.
