I don't know what "traditional Star Trek" is? every show has bene very different. I love Discovery, and my favourite Star Trek is the TOS movies II-IV trilogy, if that helps. The main problem with the show is avoiding the hatewatchers.

Itís not a question of just flipping a switch. PoD needs different files to the onscreen PDF. Itís actually quite a bit of extra work and reformatting, followed by an approval process at DTFPGís end, and then ordering and paying for a proof. If they plan to change it at all, theyíd have to do that all over again each time.

There was a time, way back when, that the group I played with did declarations. But, that was back in 1e, and quite frankly, too many times for both PC and NPC that led to nonsensical dud actions. Most games these days don't have declaration like that as part of their design these days.

I would not advise any new writer to accept less than 3c/w. And thatís really basement rate pay. Accepting less than that normalises it. Editing is a separate job, paid similarly per word. And yes, payment upon acceptance is appropriate. Good call on that! :)

The GM should always be free to say that something doesnít apply. That said, think of it like comic books - people die all the time only to come back later. The only limit is a (semi) plausible reason. For the other question, itís not really the number of exploits which makes something powerful. It how they combine. A thousand abilities gives a PC lots of versatility throughout any encounters...

To be clear - the action/rescue scene can be totally improv, no problem. I do run a lot of GUMSHOE, as the main game I run at home is Ashen Stars - and there what I plot out is the mystery. Folks tend to overestimate their ability to create a sensible mystery by improv - when you just make up mystery elements on the fly, without time to *think* about how they fit together, you tend to have plot...

We all assume that if they publish a game, they will shift their show to *use* the game. D&D players will no longer have a particular reason to take in their show, and the show won't be an advertisement for D&D. True. But I don't know how difficult it is to make an animated show. It *sounds* a lot more difficult to me, but I've no way of gauging it.

You have an issue trying to justify it being a long and arduous overland journey, though, especially with an ocean in the way. Why don't they get on an eagle jet plane and just fly there? You may want the thematic element that carrying The One Thing is bad for you. A radioactive power cell, maybe? Then read a bunch of Captain America comics, where the Red Skull is trying to bring...

Well, thatís branding, isnít it? People would say ďIím playing Critical Role tonight!Ē and folks would know what that means. Building a brand is hard, but if anybody in the TRPG space, CR would have the best shot at it.

Sure. New ventures entail risk. An RPG rulebook isnít *that* much of a risk, though. Especially if it was a Kickstarter stretch goal. Much easier to produce than an animated show!

I think itís interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didnít, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world.

  • 02:12 AM - Henry mentioned Morrus in post DnD Sports Changes Name To RPG Sports
...nd awhile ago. What percentage of that is going to spend time watching someone else roll dice and pencil in numbers on a piece of paper? Keep in mind, this is the same thing as asking what percentage of people would be interested in watching a Magic the Gathering game. Which based on their more recent tournament (Worlds I think?) was 19,000 people* (Out of a player base of reportedly 20-30 million). So we can theorize that what we're looking at is a viewer rate of about what? 6,500 to 9,000? I don't think I'd call that either a draw or an audience. Going into other RPG's, Pathfinder ends up a percentage of D&D, and everything else is going to number in the hundreds of people at best since their market penetration is really small. I suspect we'll find that its popularity is embarrassingly small, and after 2-3 events we never hear about it again. In addition to Nathan Stewart, Brand Director for D&D, updating that figure to 12 to 15 million in North America alone, as Morrus mentions, keep in mind that Critical Role, where people are "rolling dice and recording numbers on a character sheet," pull in somewhere between 55,000 and 65,000 viewers a week regularly, and fill halls with 3000 to 5000 people per appearance. Even half that will still make an audience to garner a following, and more likely to follow if it's something you don't have to devote 4 or 5 hours to, as you would Critical Role. Ignoring just D&D for a moment, others like Glass Cannon Podcast have audiences probably closer to 10 to 12,000, with at least 4,000 solid Patreon members donating enough for them to make a regular business of it as a self-sustaining model. There's a long tail of different RPG viewing audiences out there, not all of which overlap, simply because there wouldn't be enough hours in the day for them to (since so many are 3 to 5 hours long to consume) Again, is it an audience of millions? Nope, and no one claimed it was - but all they need is that 20,000 or 30,000 str...

  • 02:11 AM - pming mentioned Morrus in post "DnDSports": Competitive Play With Prizes
Hiya! First: Called it! ;) Second: There has always been "competitive play". Yes. One party goes through a module and gets points. Another party then does the same. Then another. And maybe a fourth. Which ever party scored the most points during the completion of the module wins. That was the "competition". I am not a aware of a single "adventure" that pitted two groups of players sitting across from one another in a Colosseum type setting where they try and kill each other. IMNSHO, trying to equate "D&D eSports Competition" and "AD&D Tournaments" from the late 70's and into the 80's is...disingenuous, to say the least. Both are COMPLETELY different methods for determining a 'winning side'. Third: [quote=Morrus] [Quote Originally Posted by DQDesign] totally agree. It's not about "not playing my way". It's about bringing in a potentially overwhelming amount of people who are NOT "roleplayers" and are not actually interested in any of the "roleplaying". As this group increases, it would bring in more money and more and more voices asking for what they want. WotC is a company, owned by an evil faceless juggernaut who wants to expand and acquire more of everything (market share, money, IP's, etc). At some point, WotC would 'switch' to...

  • 07:43 AM - Fallstorm mentioned Morrus in post Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals
... While I like 5E I (along with most of my group) are rather disappointed at the pace of rules production released in 5E. Mike Mearls mentioned that thereis a ton of new players and someone in this over twenty page thread made a statement saying that since 5E is doing so well it must mean that players in general donít favor heavy rules customization. I take issue with that belief. I take issue with it because we really donít fully know what Hasbro is counting as sales of D&D. Mike Mearls has said before that they donít have to put out as many splat books because they can release games like Lords of Waterdeep, etcetera as income generators since the Hasbro merger. I am wondering if things like the numerous board games and additional niche products (Dice sets), etcetera are what is making a more significant portion D&D 5E sales now, whereas the RPG books like splat books were the main revenue generator in previous editions? I donít know if there are any hard numbers on this (perhaps Morrus has some insight) but I would feel secure betting that besides the three core books (DMG, PHB, and MM) the biggest book sales of D&D 5E are probably the books that offer actual rules and option expansions like Xanatharís Guide to Everything and Mordenkainenís Guide, and also the SCAG (as the first book to really offer PC expansions despite how skimpy). I do know that there are a number of third party options but many people donít use those because they like to use official products for a variety of reasons: 1) It creates consistency from campaign to campaign and between games 2) people may feel that official splat material has been better play tested, etc. What I think is that is that Mike Mearlís statement is coming from two places. 1) His own personal philosophy and not that of ALL the designers because I know Jeremy Crawford had written much more crunch to the game that was not included and 2) it was pragmatic political statement. What I mean in regards to the latter is ...

I think you are misinterpreting the "fired" comment. He was just saying "Anybody who thinks it's your job to maintain an aura of eliteness by keeping out the 'unworthies'...please go away." He was also observing that there was a high correlation between that crowd and people who enjoy system complexity, probably because system complexity makes a nice barrier to entry for people who want to imagine they are part of an elite crowd. Unfortunately, a lot of people are interpreting it as, "People who like system complexity, please go find another game." EDIT: Overlapped with @Morrus. I'll refrain from further commentary on that aspect.

  • 01:23 PM - Reynard mentioned Morrus in post Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals
First of all, thanks Morrus for collecting this. I generally avoid Twitter because, frankly, it's full of a$$holes. That aside: this is an interesting way of looking at it, and underscores the difference in design philosophies between the WotC team and the Paizo team. There is a lot of room for both philosophies of design, and I don't think there is any reason for fans of one to be hostile to fans of the other, but those differences do matter. There are ways in which I like the prescriptive elements of 3.x era games (I like set skill difficulty lists, for example) but I tend to run by the seat of my pants and the effects of my beer, so a fast and loose and forgiving version like 5E really enables me running a game the way I like to.

  • 01:27 PM - Coroc mentioned Morrus in post ďWho started it?Ē Initiative order
Even a sucker punch has a chance to be countered by someone with quick reflexes, and an attack action in D&D does not mean you strike once and that's it, but it is a time segment of around 6 seconds, during which you do all sorts of combat stuff but get #number of attacks chances to actually hit and do damage. Therefore, at first I did like Morrus thought, but the more I think about it, the normal initiative system is more balanced and fair.

I think itís interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didnít, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world. I don't see that as a likely move. The CR crew are actors, not game designers. There's not exactly a lot of skill overlap there. I mean, maybe they could commission a CR branded RPG to be designed for them, but why? They'd basically have to build an entire design, publishing, and distribution chain. Right now WotC does all that for them. Symbiosis is easier, more efficient, and lets everyone focus on what they do best. I mean, CR will want to retain their independence because they want creative freedom, sure. But not everyone wants to be a monolithic vertically integrated multi-media behemoth. Disney is not a reasonable aspirational model for most people. :D

I think itís interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didnít, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world. That's certainly true. Reading through some of the comments on the Kickstarter, I get the impression that a good number of backers are helping to fund this project out of a desire to "give back" to Critical Role. There are lots of heartfelt stories about how CR helped people through a hard period of their life, or helped inspire them to start a game of their own, or made them feel "cool" for playing D&D, etc. They've captured lightning in a bottle. I hope they don't try to create their own RPG, though. While I'm sure it would be successful, I worry it would split their community. But CR seems content to roll with 5E D&D. (I'm not even going to apologize for that pun.) Their Tal'Dorei Campaign Guide is quality work and has been generally well-received; I h...

  • 10:55 PM - Eltab quoted Morrus in post WotC Considering NPC Stat Format Change
Is it bad that I actually quite like that? Monster Manuals are the place for a paragraph of text about the monster and a page of fluff describing its background. In an adventure, I need to know if the monster wants to attack the PCs (presumably so or you do not have a Combat; talkative monsters can provide you with an Encounter), and mechanically what it uses to interact with the PC's stats. The paragraph format has its place but standing in between a Monster and a group of PCs is not that place. Despite the rather lawyerly use of language and terms, I miss 4e's stat blocks with their prominent symbol showing "this is what he will hit the PCs with".

Is that you, Charles? :) This one is a Darcy! Charles was disintegrated by some strange glowing light, it's a darn shame. :-) Some info: Add-ons: The add-on info is now up on the main page! If you'd like to get all the PDFs + the corebook in print, simply back at the EVERY PDF! level and add $50 to your pledge. After the Kickstarter closes, we'll ask you in BackerKit which add-ons the extra funds go toward. Page count: While we won't announce an official page count, you can expect it to be comparable to our other books around that price range, which tend to be in the mid-200s of pages. Stretch goals: Our Kickstarters tend to be really dynamic, and we love getting to listen and respond to what folks are asking for. We definitely have some ideas up our sleeves, and we will announce upon funding (which could be soon). I hope that helps, folks! You rock.

Yeah, Nathan Stewart likes to troll fans with cryptic mentions of settings. I'll wait for something more concrete. I said I wouldn't be surprised, not that it is for sure: though Margaret Weis was in WotC for consulting work late last year, per social media, which was suggestive.

Well Dyson Logos says he did them. Iím inclined to believe him. I didn't mean that anybody was lying. I just thought you'd used the wrong pictures. But another poster has made a close analysis and says they're very slightly different from the originals, so I'll believe it. That just leaves me very, very disappointed. Dyson is a talented guy, I've paid for his maps in the past. Why would WotC set him to essentially tracing over old stuff?

I donít understand what that means. Itís a quote. No, it's your assertion that changes my impersonal statement into a personal one. But *that* is not what you said. You said 600 pages was bad design. You were talking about the format of the book. Yes it is, because my criticism of 600 pages was based on the premise that I was being critical of the design and approach of the prospective new core rules, and think they will have real challenges in maintaining their sales status of the last decade. 600 pages is bad design, because it puts up barriers to new audiences and is largely made up of stuff the core game could have withheld or been more considerate about. If you donít like the actual game, thatís a different conversation. And it's one you have already asserted in this conversation to making it a conversation about my tastes. Yeah, insults arenít going to help. Donít do that, please.'Ad hominem' is not an insult - it's pointing out that you have attempted to discredit me rat...
  • 12:44 PM - TrippyHippy quoted Morrus in post Big Changes in ICv2's RPG Industry Charts, as Pathfinder Drops Off Before 2E's Release!
It's really not, though. "600 pages is bad design practice" is virtually meaningless. No it's not. It's been explained why too. Oh, I think it's clear you will. But that's a different statement altogether, isn't it?Yes - and it is not the statement I made. My own preferences about Pathfinder or not is irrelevent to the conversation - I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about how Pathfinder 2nd edition will fare. I'd be happy to see Pathfinder increase it's sales, as I regard Lisa Stevens as one of the outstanding RPG executives of the last three decades, in fact. But I am critical of the design and approach of the prospective new core rules, and think they will have real challenges in maintaining their sales status of the last decade. You cannot seem to disconnect the criticism away from tribalism, however. Again, this is disappointing because you are making an ad hominem attack rather than addressing the arguments.

  • 08:05 AM - TrippyHippy quoted Morrus in post Big Changes in ICv2's RPG Industry Charts, as Pathfinder Drops Off Before 2E's Release!
This isn't a criticism; it's merely a description. They could make D&D, and everybody could make D&D, and there could be no games but D&D, but why would anybody buy them when they can buy the actual D&D? Some people want more complex games. I know you don't get that. But it's a thing. And Paizo are serving that market. The snotty comments about "good design practice"? Eh.It's not snotty. It's criticism. There does seem to be a tendency on this site recently for certain people to treat the two things as the same - as a source of defensiveness and conflict. It's not intended to be, but if people can't be critical of things they have an interest in, then what is the point of discourse? And, to be sure, this is a pointed criticism itself - some of the responses by a certain individual over contentious issues on this site recently have been disappointing to say the least. I was a patreon and a customer too. And while I certainly get that some like gamers like some systems more crunchy th...

And a lot do. But who cares? We can only talk for ourselves about what we enjoy, and I have to admit that I really struggle with your remorseless negativity. Canít we just talk about the cool stuff we like, rather than constantly tearing stuff down? It's more interesting to complain online:). Mostly happy with 5E or whatever doesn't leave much room for discussion. Also context of the thread title. Season 1 fair enough season 2 is improving. I may also be a cynical pessimistic reactionary:).

I think STD is excellent. Itís the only show other than Gotham that I get excited about each week right now, and probably will be until Game of Thrones returns. Itís important to understand your personal tastes are just that. They are not shared by everybody. True but a lot of Trekkies don't like it. We used to watch Gotham but wife pulled the plug on it season 3 or 4. I understand it got better with Dominic portraying the Joker. We liked his character in Shameless.

I find that episodic structure kinda formulaic and boring these days, but we all like different things. I can go either way but make it good. If you're running a serial there are better ones than STD in the Sci fi genre. The Expanse comes to mind. Episodic seems to be a Trek thing though and thing like Babylon5 also did it better in terms of serial. And STD is apparently really expensive as in Game of Thrones expensive. The thread title is dated its at least getting better.

Was there? I donít recall that, but this is a totally new character to this show. Can't find the picture now. Just thought she was an interest g looking character and wanted to know more. It's the main thing I don't like about Discovery two seasons in and very little character development and only a few of the crew seem to matter. It's quite noticible with DS9 which has a Quark episode a Dax episode etc.
  • 02:31 AM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Star Trek Discovery not getting any better I fear.
This has nothing to do with any movies. Itís all new. Just asking I didn't know but there was a similar looking character on one of the movies posters or shots iirc. Not really a trekkie last watched it in the 90s currently watching DS9.

You've seen as much as we have. All of the above? I guess we'll find out soon, since it looks like she's the spy. I haven't seen the new movies. Didn't make that connection with her eyes the other night.
