To me it comes down to presentation. If the party goes into an area that is known to be fraught with heinous, over the top peril, than I would expect no surprise when said peril occurs. But I would't throw such a threat if they were just doing a diplomatic mission for example, as the peril would feel more arbitrary to me at that point.

The key to the Solar is its 150 ft flying speed. Effectively unless you have a means of immobilizing it, it can kite indefinitely, or it can just teleport back 120 feet if necessary. So for an Empryean vs a Solar it comes down to Bolt vs Slaying Longbow. Overall, bolt has a +3 attack advantage (+2, and the Solar's AC is 1 lower) and gets to attack twice through the legendary action. Slaying...

I will disagree to a point here. Again, we are talking about a creature that is supposed to be extremely difficult, maybe nigh impossible for a party to defeat. This to me is the equivalent of a party asking for a god's personal password and wondering why the knowledge check DC is outside of their possible values. Further, an "impossible" roll does serve a few functions. One, it lets other...

Sure. I'm just not clear on whether you're asking these questions because you want to prevent the PCs from getting it, or because you're intrigued by the option and wanting to know how they can pull it off.

As I said, watch surrogates. Also, if you don't want this stuff in your game, just disallow it. Come up with a reason. Pemberton has secret knowledge that they don't manage to replicate during the span of the campaign. Like, we figured out how to make nukes 70 years ago, but some folks still have a hard time doing it. It's okay if the PCs can't do everything.

Quite enjoyed today’s episode. Felt a lot more old school. Workers disappearing, a little less sombre than some episodes have been this year. Nothing new, just a traditional Who episode — we’ve seen cheery polite killer robots like those dozens of times before, but that’s OK.

A decent sized warehouse converted into a production line is only going to be able to have maybe.. 3 to 6 lines MAX.. production takes up a LOT of space. and most warehouses are not TALL enough to stand a mech up (let alone a door to let them walk out of easily), they have to be done laying down and rolled out the building that way. If a mech is 50 feet tall, and say 25ish wide in total.. you'll...

Sorry capnzap you lost me on this argument. The CR system says “if a party’s level is below the CR” they may have an exceptionally difficult time dealing with it”. Now you and I have both pointed out that many monsters are over CRed especially at high levels. But we can’t have it both ways. In this scenario the CR is working correctly. Quite simply, a party is not meant to have a...

Under most circumstances I'd agree, but since we're talking about a random encounter that (if I remember the Martek portion correctly) just pops out of the ground/glass and starts snacking, it should probably be modded in some fashion to avoid a no-win kill-a-character-or-three moment. Now, if it's modded as a "cutscene instance" like Quartz describes, where only major stupidity would get them...

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. A nonlethal doomsday bomb, eh? I'm sure that'll be popular with the public. Poor Kell going down before he got to gouge anyone's eyes out.

I'd say "official" is nothing, but "default" is Forgotten Realms, if I were to distinguish between the two terms.

Yeah. They used to get around that with the "fixed point in time" technobabble but they don't do that any more. But all of it's the past for the Doctor, so every alien stopped is altering history.

Umbran started a thread Stan Lee - Excelsior!
I know this is mentioned in the Remembrances thread, but the man had such an impact on genre fiction, I think he deserves his own thread. Mr. Stan Lee, one of the fathers of modern comic books and superheroes, has passed, at the age of 95. https://www.npr.org/2018/11/12/106322838/a-marvel-of-a-man-stan-lee-dead-at-95

They're definitely doing the "teaching history" part of Doctor Who, aren't they? I agree that the Doctor was just a bystander in this episode. All they did is witness events.

I don't have kids myself, but I have some very recent experience with this... One of the players in my regular game wanted his 13-year-old daughter to learn about D&D. But, having your father run the game is pretty lame, and can lead to some weird dynamics, so he asked me to do it - I ran a game for the dad, the kid, a friend of hers, and my wife (who is a kid of unofficial godmother to the...

Well this is ... peculiar... http://forums.cubicle7.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11706 This new regulation, GDPR - some data protection thing - is apparently so onerous to meet that they feel forced to close their forum. Juuuust as the 4rth edition of warhammer was about to be released too... Morrus, could this impact EN world somehow?

  • 10:07 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post D&D Has the Biggest Playerbase, So Why is it the Hardest for 3rd Party to Market Too?
Fair enough. I have to admit though, I find it a bit difficult to believe that Morrus has never seen 2pp used as a term on the boards. I have. But, hey, it's not really that big of an issue to be honest. Again, there are so few licensed publishers out there that it's not really a problem. As far as the original question goes, I'm actually frankly confused why someone would think that it's much harder for 3PP to get their name out there than it was, say, back in the d20 boom days. With the mountain of Patreons, Kickstarters and various other venues, I'm seeing an awful lot of pretty successful attempts at getting product out there. Thing is, there's just so much material out there that it can be pretty easy to get lost in the weeds.

  • 11:02 AM - Li Shenron mentioned Morrus in post PbP games: what works and what doesn't?
Oh and I have a suggestion for Morrus too... try to see if there is a possibility for adding a forum functionality by which a forum member can subscribe to a thread and get notifications when someone else replies to the thread. AFAIK this is not how it works at the moment, you get notifications only if you receive a PM, mention or XP. Having notifications on subscribed threads would greatly help a PbP player know when a game has progressed, and reach the thread in a couple of clicks rather than having to find it in the subforums.

...te, caring etc then men" so if a woman speaks up "loudly", she's acting against her role. I know that this holds true more in face-to-face environments, whereas online debates are often no more than mere black-on-white (or inversed) text. Still she identified as a woman. And from what I read, Afrodyte is done with playing the "nice little woman". She's (rightfully) upset about the fact that there are many victim-blaming posts or posts filled with micro-misogyny in this thread that were not being called out while her arguments were dissected. She's also under the impression that male-identifying posters are being less challenged and have it far easier being listened to. And I understand her. Because being a woman who's active online, who has a mind of her own and who gets vocal from time to time can be hard. That being said, I still think that ENWorld is one of the best places to discuss my/our hobby, including systemic problems in our community. And I'm really thankful for Morrus and the other mods to keep it this civil. (Because, honestly, other, more general gaming forums oftentimes look as if they're the little brethren of /b )

  • 08:19 PM - RedJenOSU mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
So I want to say I am sorry for the stuff I am missing and I want to do better. I don’t do cons but since the problem is everywhere I need to step up and do better in general. In general women are very willing to give individual men several chances to get it right so long as they are trying to move in a positive direction. Personally, I'll excuse any first offense that is done without malice (doing something on purpose to push buttons is not without malice in my book). I'll even accept slip-ups if you keep trying to do better. We're all human (I didn't see any AI's here) and humans make mistakes, so I'm never looking for perfection. I'm looking for progress and growth. I'll be honest, this discussion has gone on to the point where I'm surprised. That's pleasantly surprising and speaks well for Morrus and ENWorld's moderation.
  • 04:00 PM - RedJenOSU mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? No. That does not seem consistent with your viewpoint. Do you yield to authority (Morrus) and because lowkey13 has none per say in this environment you deem him as an enemy if he requests the same thing from you? No. Le me try to put the dots close together. Afrodyte has stated previously that if @Morrus feels that what she is doing should stop, then upon being notified of his choice as the moderator, Then she will respect his request as the moderator. At that time she would discontinue her attempt to demonstrate through her requests (Name, SSN, pic) instances in this discussion that she personally feels fall somewhere between unfriendly and hostile toward women.
  • 03:33 PM - Sadras mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
Yet, I find it interesting that my fairly benign statements showing that I don't automatically trust every self-proclaimed good dude are getting more heat than some of the deeply unsettling things several posters have been saying in the past 15 pages I've been participating on this thread. That is a curious statement. The last 15 pages have been relatively mild compared to what had been posted before where Morrus got involved several times. As for you getting heat more than the trolls, citation needed. I'm not seeing any evidence of what you're claiming, especially given the XP count which equates to support. If you really think that an exaggerated demonstration of the daily precautions I have to take to avoid harassment and assault is unfairly blaming poor, innocent men who are just trying to have a discussion, you haven't been paying attention to what several women and men have been saying on this thread, and you are not on my side (whatever being on my side supposedly means), and it all of it sustains and supports the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in environments where people are supposed to be safe. So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? Furthermore why doe...

...o started the thread then replied "You need to read up on the concept of "plus" threads if you think I want an echo chamber, or if you don't see the very valid reasons why the site supports such threads. If you want to keep discussing this that's fine, but I will need to ask you to start a new thread to do it." A second user said they doubted the premise of the thread was possible, and was told again "This is a plus thread. If you want to argue against the premise of the thread, start a new one." When questioned on that, the poster then said, "Questioning the point of the thread is exactly what you don't get to do in a plus thread." Can a user now declare a thread they start to be designated a "plus" thread and therefore police their thread for anyone who questions a premise of the topic? Are we now supposed to always start a new thread if we question the premise of a designated "plus" thread? It's possible I missed that new rule. I asked elsewhere and someone mentioned Morrus had discussed the possibility of such a thing but it had never been enacted as a rule as far as they knew. So, is this a thing now?

  • 05:34 AM - Ancalagon mentioned Morrus in post Most popular class/race combos
Two comments: 1: I note that the "spread" of classes is much less dramatic than the race spread. The most popular class is a bit more than twice as popular as the least popular class. That's a good thing IMO! Race wise however, the spread is what, 12-13 fold? That's huge. Even is we exclude the non PHB races, the spread remains about 5-fold. I have to say that ... I'm ok with that. I would be far more concerned if the situation was reversed 2: Morrus : this is very cool info, but I'm curious why you are re-posting it?
  • 01:54 AM - Yaarel mentioned Morrus in post Most popular class/race combos
@Morrus Did the top 10 list accidentally leave out the Elf Wizard? The chart says there are 2744 Elf Wizards and 2568 Human Wizards. This means, the Elf Wizard is a more popular combo than the Human Wizard.

  • 06:17 PM - CapnZapp mentioned Morrus in post I gotta ask: the "laugh" points, are they meant as appreciation or as mockery??
Morrus: this issue doesn't go away. I'm going to report a series of my own posts where a user clicks laugh (yes, I know the button is called "laugh with this post") even though my remarks are not in any sense made with humor in mind. In short, I find it impossible to interpret this as anything else than mockery. I am writing this post because I know you are busy and might have a mod handle the reporting, so you might not even see the series of reported posts. (I need to post this first so I can include a link in my reports for your moderation convenience) If you or your mods redtext the user to stop abusing the laugh functionality all is well in the world. But I am ressurrecting this thread to clearly flag that it is not a new issue, and it remains a serious one. I've gotten dozens of laugh points I could have done well without, and I feel that if I do not bring thus back up to your attention it will never stop. I can't be alone in getting these points that only burn. If y...

  • 01:43 AM - Aeson quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
Yeah it’s a lot less popular in the US. Not surprising I guess. 10m viewers in the U.K. is one in 6 people. The equivalent pro rated for population would be 50m viewers in the US. So per head it’s 25 times less popular in the US. It's growing in popularity. My 14 year old nephew has recently discovered it. Like many teens he knows almost nothing of things older than himself. So he was surprised when I told him about the older episodes. Many here have a hard time relating to something not American. Canada gets a pass because they sound like us. My mom has difficulty hearing so accents are enough for her to turn away from Doctor Who and other British shows. Others can't get past the cheesy FX of the 80s.

Rebellion sells them digitally, I think. They have their own app for comics. It’s an awesome setting. I want it too! Certainly is available (link) - though as Tordelback says, the series will be completed soon, so presumably an updated version of the complete Caballistics will also be forthcoming.
  • 03:07 PM - Brian I quoted Morrus in post Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000 AD... counting down the days!
I won't say I'm glad the Kickstarter is over, but it's nice to be able to relax for a couple of days! Ha! Fair. I meant the open funding period, but yea, still work to be done. I was nonetheless impressed at how quickly I was reading my books in PDF last night regardless. :) I do hope you enjoy the game! I dig in better with print copies, but so far, super-pleased. It definitely looks great, esp. compared to my old GW versions. ;) That I've run WOIN several times now gives me hope I'll actually get some sessions of this version of JD RPG in. :) Again, nicely done!
  • 12:38 PM - Mustrum_Ridcully quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
Depends how far back you go. Tom Baker had 14.5m with City of Death and 13.5m with Destiny of the Daleks. The highest sine the 2005 revival is Voyage of the Damned, which, like you say, was a Tennant (Xmas) episode with 13.3m viewers. He had a few 10m+ eps. This series is doing super well though! The Woman Who Fell To Earth had 10.9m, which is about twice what most of Capaldi's run did. For "first episode" ratings (comparing like for like), Whittaker is in the lead with 10.9, followed by Ecclestone with 10.81, then Tom Baker with 10.8. I am wondering - was Tom Baker already well-known before he became the Doctor? A(s a foreigner I really don't know much about UK actors in that time.) What about the others? I think Witthaker is actually the only one I knew before I watched them, because I saw the first season of Broadchurch. Does their popularity in any way influence those numbers?

  • 08:46 PM - Quickleaf quoted Morrus in post Adventures with extensive backstory
I am rubbish at reading all the backstory in published adventures. It always feels like I'm revising for an exam. I"m reading one now. It's only 4 pages of backstory, but it is *dense* with names and places and history. It very much feels like I'm doing schoolwork! Especially since it's 4 page of backstory and then about 16 pages of adventure. It feels like a history book. Reached a sentence with 4 different place names and two different character names in it. I keep re-reading it in the hope I can parse it! Anybody else have this problem, or is it just me? Uff, that's pretty egregious. I could see 2 pages for a 100+ page adventure perhaps (e.g. Tomb of Annihilation has about 1-and-1/2 pages backstory). But 4 pages is just too much. That style of long-form adventure writing has been around since Dungeon magazine and possibly some of the older modules. I recently re-read "Umbra" (Dungeon #55), one of Chris Perkins earlier adventures that I adore, and there's about 3 pages of bac...

Ah Ravenloft. Though it contributed to the fracturing of the market base in 2e, I have fond memories of it. And the art was something else – Fabian’s pieces were so atmospheric. I do hope we see a return to Ravenloft, beyond just Barovia, one day. It’s games, not settings (which is why Ravenloft isn’t there either).

My sympathies. Pants are outer wear, cars don't have boots, and we gave up torches for flashlights when electricity became a thing. Though we do tend to use all the letters in a word. Oh! and pudding is a specific dish -- not a synonym for dessert.

Anybody else have this problem, or is it just me? Ye olde info dump; you are inline with about 90% of the players in my games, I usually give about 3 paragraphs at most, usually far less, and if for those that like info, a separate pdf (last was 5 pages on sea life and one of the players still thought it wasn't enough :heh: ). I figure 2-3 sentences is ideal, and if ongoing, I parse it out into relevant bits during descriptions in play. This doesn't include poorly written exposition, some people need a lesson on being concise. Giving relevant, useful data is a keystone for the story arc, or whatever.
  • 03:48 PM - Mustrum_Ridcully quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
One thing I found quite compelling was the unpleasant realisation that the Doctor and Graham needed to *be* the white people taking up the space so the driver had to tell Parks to move. You could see they so wanted to help, but knew they couldn't. It was important that they didn't make to that the Doctor inspired Parks, or caused the events, or anything like that. It was a strong choice to have nobody even really notice the Doctor, and for none of the primary characters agency to be altered or reduced. They all made the choices and did the things they did on their own initiative, and the Doctor had nothing to do that. Instead, she was busy dealing with a time traveller and ensuring he didn't stop it, while staying out of the way. It would have been kinda funny if they didn't realize what was up, and the Doctor would just give up her spot for Rosa Parks, only to realize she just has screwed up the timeline and has to fix things.
  • 07:29 AM - Tonguez quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
I'm really impressed by the episode, most Doctor History episodes are iconoclasmic romps but this one managed to be respectful and well researched (even including her NAACP Youth Council links). The cast were good, they managed to give the subject of racism gravitas while also working in a couple of jokes, a bit of social commentary and a closing tribute. Well done One question about the bad guy — why didn’t he just send Rosa Parks back in time? He couldn’t harm her, but he could send people back in time. Seems a much easier way to accomplish his aims. I'm assuming its the same logic that makes the Weeping Angels bad - they don't actually kill you, they just "take your life away", I can accept the inhibitor accounting for that too

I can just see it. Rosa Parks arrives to the moment the very first slave ship arrives to America, and somehow ends up ending slavery on the continent before it even begins. :p

I felt it was let down a little by the villain himself, who just felt a bit like a placeholder, but the primary cast was excellent. Doctor Who Where a white supremacist trying to derail the civil rights movement isn't "evil" enough. ;)
  • 08:53 PM - MarkB quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
It was very good, with some excellent performances. I felt it was let down a little by the villain himself, who just felt a bit like a placeholder, but the primary cast was excellent. It felt like it needed some kind of epilogue to it, showing where/when he ended up, hopefully in some form of ironic-justice context. The fact that we didn't get one suggests that we may see him again.
  • 05:10 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post New Ravnica Race and Guild Details Revealed
Yup. Me. I've never played M:tG, or even really seen it, but as a new setting for D&D this looks like fun. Yeah, same here, though I've played a few hands of Magic in my time. I've really enjoyed what WotC has been offering for the past few years, but this is easily the most bold and interesting looking product they've put out in a looking time.

More? How many newspapers should I buy? I’m glad that will solve my dislike of adventure backstories. Can’t wait! One a week should do it. If you read full articles in the economy/finance section, backstories will seem downright gripping. :|

  • 05:43 PM - Brian I quoted Morrus in post Looking for NEW players
I mean, people are busy. If they showed interest, they may be able to play at a later date or whatever. They probably won’t now! :) I'd normally agree, for usual type campaigns. With a West Marches style game, the sense is after a month of not commenting, they weren't going to play. It was a bit odd, but it was well announced, and the minimum bar was pretty low for a Player: register at the campaign website and/or the discord server. There's folks who have done so, but aren't ready or able to play now. Folks were given advance notice, and invited to come back. It's been a very interesting (and fun) process regardless. I'm viewing it as learning experience, so how to better advertise, on-board, incentivize, etc. is all part of the deal. I totally appreciate knikpiw and the other members providing organizational help and such as well.
