I'd say "official" is nothing, but "default" is Forgotten Realms, if I were to distinguish between the two terms.

Yeah. They used to get around that with the "fixed point in time" technobabble but they don't do that any more. But all of it's the past for the Doctor, so every alien stopped is altering history.

Umbran started a thread Stan Lee - Excelsior!
I know this is mentioned in the Remembrances thread, but the man had such an impact on genre fiction, I think he deserves his own thread. Mr. Stan Lee, one of the fathers of modern comic books and superheroes, has passed, at the age of 95. https://www.npr.org/2018/11/12/106322838/a-marvel-of-a-man-stan-lee-dead-at-95

They're definitely doing the "teaching history" part of Doctor Who, aren't they? I agree that the Doctor was just a bystander in this episode. All they did is witness events.

I don't have kids myself, but I have some very recent experience with this... One of the players in my regular game wanted his 13-year-old daughter to learn about D&D. But, having your father run the game is pretty lame, and can lead to some weird dynamics, so he asked me to do it - I ran a game for the dad, the kid, a friend of hers, and my wife (who is a kid of unofficial godmother to the...

I appreciate the notes. Yeah I think to me the Eidelon's offensive CR is a bit underrepresented because it has a very solid possibility of knocking out an equivalent level player in a single round....which of course reduces the party's offense against it. Compare that to a stone golem that will take a few rounds to do the same, so it has to endure more punishment. But again I don't think this...

By "before" you mean in a different system. I guess if you value your gut reaction over actual play experience, there's not really much to debate, is there? You're right - you the way you feel about this game you haven't played yet is how you feel. :)

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Science interjection - you've got it a little messed up. Arthropoods have two separate issues as they get large. One is weight - the materials used in exoskeletons are not particularly strong. It cannot carry the same weight that bone can - so, if they get too big, arthropod exoskeletons will break legs, and the like. This can be gotten around by fundamentally changing the materials used...

Folks need to read up on biology a bit before going into such things. You folks are making this way too complicated, and you are trying too hard to bind an alien species that only superficially looks human to human mechanisms and structures. I mean, think for a second, if a male can bring a baby to term, it quite obviously doesn't mean the same thing as "male" does in humans. Even on Earth,...

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

Kings and queens to not typically hold their position due to right of personal arms or personal physical prowess. They hold the role by tradition and political acumen. Any writeup that gives them some understanding of History, a decent Insight, and decent scores in, say, Diplomacy, Deception, and Persuasion would do.

So it sounds like your main concern in the argument isn't the damage of ranged, its the true "range" of ranged. For example in 3e many ranged benefits fell away at 30 feet (Sneak Attack, Point Blank Shot). On the other hand, 5e imposes greater penalty for "moderate ranges". For 3e with your composite bow you suffered a -2 to attack rolls from ranges 110 - 215. In 5e, starting at 150 you...

I could understand the argument coming from 4e, as archers often had trick shots and powers. I would say from 3e you would suffer the same issue, as if the front line is doing their job, the archer does just sit back and wail away.

Its an interesting point. I think the point is valid that there are certain monsters that some party members will struggle to save against. But that said, the effects are not so strong that a high level party cannot recover....often recover immediately. Is that necessarily a "bad thing". I don't necessarily think so. The players take their lumps but still come out triumphant. All of this...

Gygax decided to "show them a thing or two", and gave them an atypical experience - a thing that looked like the typical dungeon crawl, but wasn't. It was tough, in large part, because it defied the playstyle many had become accustomed to. The thing is, we are not many, many years later. We have...

Modifying a stat block here and there is par for the DM course, but if you find your having to do it continuously to generate threat that suggests something is off. And that's where I find myself. Solo Monsters have always been a tough gig in Dnd. I think 4e's later solo monsters (MM3 and beyond) were probably the best showing to date, as they generally had a good mix of offense and defense. In general, my issue with 5e legendary monsters is there lack of threat. Because attacks and damage do not scale heavily with levels, the number of actions/attacks has a much bigger impact on the...

  • 08:06 AM - Ancalagon mentioned Morrus in post Let's Look At Alchemy In Pathfinder 2!
There was apparently a podcast that divulged more information (I don't have a link at the moment) - Alchemical items have "levels" from 1 to 20 - Bombs were supposed to require two hands to use, but that's being changed to one hand Also from the comments, PF2 will NOT use item weight, but a "bulk" system similar to Star finder. Another comment is that alchemists can get more resonance, which is rather important because they need it to use magical items AND wield alchemy. The start of day items, as you guys have guessed, are subsidized for a better rate if you can predict ahead of time which items you will need and make duplicates. Plus, the alchemist gets a class feature that adds extra resonance and scales, Intel for you Morrus ! :)

Hello Morrus - My understanding is that the block feature is two-way. If I block someone, I can't see their posts or respond to them and vice versa. While that does appear to be working for posters that have blocked me, it does not appear to be the case for posters I have blocked. They have been able to view and quote my posts and I have also received PMs from posters I have blocked. Would you kindly take a look at this for me? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Morrus, I am interested in submitting some short introductory and low level adventures to En5ider, but I have 1 question for you and the community: Do I need to provide the starting settlement? As in, I wish to submit some adventures that can be 'tacked on' to a settlement of choice by the DM, such as the ones already detailed on EN5ider. Would DMs be happy with this? Would I refer to people in their role, or still give them names etc? Eg: the watch captian vs Thorved the watch captain.

Another comment on shields, realism and gaming: using 2 shields as a fighting style seems just plain wrong to me. (This was mentioned in an earlier post by Paizo). If I was GMing the game (probably won't ever happen) I wouldn't allow it, and I certainly won't use it as a player. Morrus, I see that terms like "virtue signalling" (a new one to me) and SJW are not allowed on this forum, but is the same true of terms like "white privilege" and similar?
  • 07:09 PM - Cergorach mentioned Morrus in post Do We Still Need "Oriental Adventures"?
"Two things I can't stand are racism and the Dutch!" - Michael Caine's character in one of those Austin Powers movies. When you quote a movie, quote it correctly! So that everyone can bake in it's glorious contrariety... ;-) Morrus: The article isn't discussing ANY particular culture, that would be great content! But your doing now what we all don't like saying that Africa or the Orient is a culture, it isn't. It's a collection of cultures. Instead of authors raving against things that are wrong with RPG products, why not show them how it's done?

It seems like the rumours of D&D as e-sports weren't so far off after all in today's bit of unexpected news, as D&D Beyond and Encounter Roleplaying have announced DnDSports. "DnDSports is the first online D&D Tournament in a cooperative Party vs Party setting from Encounter Roleplay & DnDBeyond with a grand prize of $5,000." 102397 Here's the full announcement: Imagine if two parties fighting for opposite sides found themselves in the same dungeon. It’s kill or be killed. What will they do to survive? DnDSports is the first online D&D Tournament in a cooperative Party vs Party setting from EncounterRoleplay & DnDBeyond with a grand prize of $5,000. Over the course of 4 weeks, 16 players will compete in teams of 4 in single elimination games. Each game is a best of 3 arena battle and played via Roll20. How is it Played? • 01:46 PM - Jay Verkuilen quoted Morrus in post Fantasy Grounds Toolset Usage Report
For those of us who don’t have a mathematical background (ie me)could you explain what that is? The data have counts of games running with a particular ruleset. So 5E is the most common ruleset, followed by Pathfinder, followed by Savage Worlds, etc. The kind of mechanism that generates this pattern of counts is often thought of as representing "preferential attachment," A preferential attachment process is any of a class of processes in which some quantity, typically some form of wealth or credit, is distributed among a number of individuals or objects according to how much they already have, so that those who are already wealthy receive more than those who are not. This means a more popular ruleset has a higher chance of drawing a new entrant, with the probability being related to 1/rank. The Zipf distribution, and its relatives like the Mandelbrodt and Yule-Simon, are ways of quantifying counts over the rank order. If the Zipf distribution fit the plot of log(Count) on log(Rank) would ...
  • 09:36 AM - DQDesign quoted Morrus in post "DnDSports": Competitive Play With Prizes
I've no idea if this is licensed in any way (there's no D&D logo or anything). However, the point of granting a license to somebody is to make money, not lose money. sure, I'm just saying that, luckily, no money can be made without any company effort. And I would like to see that effort invested in something more akin to good d&d books, not this sort of thousands-dollars-prize "TV" show. just because also for hasbro company effort has a cost, and the fact that they choose to invest it in esports instead of a new dnd campaign setting book worries me a lot, because it creates suspicion in me about the fact that they consider this esports thing more profitable than dnd books (at least in perspective).
  • 05:44 AM - DQDesign quoted Morrus in post "DnDSports": Competitive Play With Prizes
You want to abandon D&D because somebody else you've never met plays D&D differently to you? no, just because the company which is lucky enough to manage the d&d brand spends the money I gave them buying books and through dmsguild royalty share doing this 'esport silly thing' instead of producing new settings and awesome d&d stories.
  • 03:50 AM - Leatherhead quoted Morrus in post "DnDSports": Competitive Play With Prizes
You want to abandon D&D because somebody else you've never met plays D&D differently to you? Normally I would agree with this. What random person A does at their personal table has almost no bearing on the game as a whole. Celebrity Tables are a bit iffier, shows like Critical Role have thousands of eyes on them and cause ripples in the community, which in turn shapes the feedback on future developments. (They have a noticeable influence on Twitch, which owns D&D Beyond, one of the more popular online tools and sources of data-mining for D&D) However, Streamed Competitive Tables will garner feedback, it will be loud because there is money on the line, and it will become the new truth of D&D online communities. It won't negatively impact people like me (who poor over the material looking at the numbers even while they are in UA, and/or go off to make their own stuff) much, if at all. But it will have an impact on future products. And yes I am aware that tournaments have existed a...

Hiya! First: Called it! ;) Second: There has always been "competitive play". Yes. One party goes through a module and gets points. Another party then does the same. Then another. And maybe a fourth. Which ever party scored the most points during the completion of the module wins. That was the "competition". I am not a aware of a single "adventure" that pitted two groups of players sitting across from one another in a Colosseum type setting where they try and kill each other. IMNSHO, trying to equate "D&D eSports Competition" and "AD&D Tournaments" from the late 70's and into the 80's is...disingenuous, to say the least. Both are COMPLETELY different methods for determining a 'winning side'. Third: [Morrus] [Quote Originally Posted by DQDesign] totally agree. • 08:37 PM - jonesy quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
I like the color scheme. Very pneumatic control panel. Does the symbol repeated on the walls mean something special? ..and the fact that they are only alive because of a 1 in a trillion trillion trillion trillion chance of a passing spaceship picking them up in space. That was very Hitchhiker's Guide-like (I seem to recall that happening multiple times throughout them books). Where did the spectacles come from?
  • 03:06 AM - Slit518 quoted Morrus in post WOTC is hiring a new Game Designer for D&D
There aren’t rules. The person who is hiring will look at your resume and decide if they want to interview you. If they interview you, they’ll then decide if they want to hire you. You can’t rules-lawyer it or get them to hire you on a technicality. I feel weird explaining the concept of a job application to somebody. Are you particularly young? I’m guessing you’ve not applied for a job before? Generally I’d suggest viewing the job requirements in the spirit they’re intended. No, I am not young. I just figured they would need examples of such things, but something attached to an NDA for example does not have examples. But Jester David explains it better in a below response.
  • 02:27 AM - Slit518 quoted Morrus in post WOTC is hiring a new Game Designer for D&D
Yes, but they’ll look at it. How does things you can't talk about work? Like let's say you did some work for Warner Brothers (which I didn't), but you have an NDA until the product is revealed. And in that product you have some credits. How does that work?!?

I personally prefer names like Glasstaff and The Black Spider over Sharokina and Sahastra, as there's no way on earth I'm going to remember the latter. And I don't think Glasstaff is any worse than Skywalker. Skywalker is a terrible name as well, only it is meant to be campy. The bad name is intentional with Star Wars. But try saying the name "Glasstaff" to yourself, and now say the name "Sharokina". Which of the two sounds more menacing? Opinions can of course differ on what makes a good name (and thats fine), but for me, it is definitely the latter that sounds better. Then there's a name like Aram Seen the Unseen, which I only had to mention once and my players never forgot it. It has a lyrical quality to it that just makes it work. I'm fine with Glasstaff, but Phandelver just didn't work for me or my group and I think the names were a factor. Conversely I'm loving the Gygaxian names in Village of Hommlet - Ostler Gundigroot, Furnok of Ferd, Lareth the Beautiful, Rufus & Burne. Phand...

Issue #0 contains an adventure with comics illustrating scenes relevant to it. But also some interesting pregens, and an essay waxing poetic on The Mimic. I thought issue #0 had great ideas, and the art was charming, but some of the execution could’ve been better. I'm not super clear what this is. Is it an adventure combined with a comic? If so, that sounds quite cool.
