There's a range of different campaign management tools available; some free, some not so. RPG Encounters is a free web app designed to work with and sync between all your devices. I hadn't heard of it before, but the creator sent me a hand-written letter to tell me about it, so I could hardly not take a look! The app currently works with four game systems: D&D 5E, Savage Worlds, Stars...

True, though I expect you'll find there's some aspects that are, while not ubiquitous, are very common. There are styles that exist through large swaths of the gaming community that most of us an recognize. The argument arises because media consumption sets expectations. And if you have your expectations set by behavior that actually has different goals than the folks at your table, that's a...

There was a time, way back when, that the group I played with did declarations. But, that was back in 1e, and quite frankly, too many times for both PC and NPC that led to nonsensical dud actions. Most games these days don't have declaration like that as part of their design these days.

I would not advise any new writer to accept less than 3c/w. And that’s really basement rate pay. Accepting less than that normalises it. Editing is a separate job, paid similarly per word. And yes, payment upon acceptance is appropriate. Good call on that! :)

While gamers will remember him as the writer for the Origins award-winning Masks of Nyarlathotep or T&T's The Isle of Darksmoke, he also wrote for Fat Albert, two He-Man shows, She-Ra (which he created), Beast...

If you publish on DMsG, you grant a perpetual license to others, including WotC, to use your work. Artwork, I believe, is excepted. While this doesn’t transfer the copyright, you are also prevented from publishing the work elsewhere. In addition, you pay 50% royalties. In exchange, you get access to some of WotC’s settings and other IP, including art assets. If you want to publish in the...

The GM should always be free to say that something doesn’t apply. That said, think of it like comic books - people die all the time only to come back later. The only limit is a (semi) plausible reason. For the other question, it’s not really the number of exploits which makes something powerful. It how they combine. A thousand abilities gives a PC lots of versatility throughout any encounters...

To be clear - the action/rescue scene can be totally improv, no problem. I do run a lot of GUMSHOE, as the main game I run at home is Ashen Stars - and there what I plot out is the mystery. Folks tend to overestimate their ability to create a sensible mystery by improv - when you just make up mystery elements on the fly, without time to *think* about how they fit together, you tend to have plot...

You could easily argue the opposite, that you shouldn’t strengthen the spell because of the wording. Others have noted that the core of the spell seems to be “losing a turn”. Anything that goes beyond that should be carefully considered, especially because the spell does have some “harm protection” built in

Man, I’d buy an RPG if *you* wrote one with even less information! I mean, maybe I’m too much of a sucker for marketing. Certainly possible. But I *do* buy RPGs because they’re associated with a property I like. I have multiple Star Wars and Star Trek RPGs! I don’t know if that’s common or unusual. From my experience selling the Judge Dredd game, Dredd is the draw, not the system or me.

We all assume that if they publish a game, they will shift their show to *use* the game. D&D players will no longer have a particular reason to take in their show, and the show won't be an advertisement for D&D. Which means effectively breaking the mutual-marketing relationship between them. That's what would get "blown up". The real question isn't whether they can publish a game. The...

I think it’s interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didn’t, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world.

What the hell was that? If you want to make mean-spirited comments about the appearance of other people, find some other platform to do it.

Monte Cook Games' 5E "Science Fantasy Sourcebook", Arcana of the Ancients, has launched on Kickstarter. "Arcana of the Ancients is a sourcebook for 5th edition players and GMs to bring the wonders of mysterious technology and weird science-fantasy elements to their traditional fantasy campaigns. Designed by Monte Cook, Bruce R. Cordell, and Sean K. Reynolds, all of whom have years of...

Agreed. The reason most fantasy world is basically, "real-world, with individuals who can produce special effects," is to allow the player's life-experience-trained intuition to hold sway most of the time. Well, we should note a couple of things. Quantum mechanics and relativity came by when they did because our basic technology started being able to measure things *outside* the...

Or not, as their world has magic, and ours doesn't. Their experiences of their world could be very different than ours. In most works, they are not, but every once in a while, a writer goes deep, and brings up some truly weird stuff. D&Disms work fine, if you include parts of old D&D cosmology - the elemental planes, and the positive and negative energy planes, and say, "Arcane magic is...

Thanks to Morrus and BookBarbarian for the comments. I'll have to read the AiME books, and see how I feel... see whether I think low-magic can be done in 5e at all. High magic certainly does seem baked in by default, and that may be quite difficult to overcome for people who want "D&D". If it is as much about expectations as anything else, perhaps that is manageable. Otherwise, perhaps I'll look into TOR. I've learned from experience with Cypher System that getting a group into a whole new ruleset can be a lot more work than I may want to deal with, so I'd prefer 5e AiME if possible.

  • 02:16 PM - SigmaOne mentioned Morrus in post Adventures in Middle Earth magic - does it work?
I just posted an in depth blog post on this topic: http://dicehaven.com/middle-earth/things-learned/ TLDR version: I love Adventures in Middle-earth but it does require a different approach to structuring game sessions and play. Very satisfying though! Thanks for this blog post! I picked up the Adventures in Middle-Earth Player's Guide and Loremaster book this weekend at Gencon on a whim, mostly because I want a strong low-magic setting and that seems impossible using the player's handbook (without disappointing nearly every player at the table). This seems to do that well, with a number of other neat systems. My friends loved the Journey system in The One Ring. (I do think he liked some of the mechanics in TOR better, but I'm definitely set on 5e for a few reasons.) Anyway, I greatly appreciate the post you linked. Morrus, did you ever get around to trying out Adventures in Middle Earth? If so, any comments on the experience?

  • 02:18 AM - Lanefan mentioned Morrus in post Help for someone clueless about D&D before AD&D 1st Edition?
Hi. I am only familiar with D&D as far back as AD&D 1st Edition and would very much like to learn about what the game was like before that - Races, Classes, Monsters, Cosmology, etc. Is there anything like a timeline listing when things appeared in the game? I seem to recall Morrus at one time had a pretty impressive timeline chart showing what was released when through all of D&D's history up to that time, but I'm not sure where he's hidden it or even if it's still on this site.

  • 03:57 AM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post What’s The Greatest D&D Video Game?
I've always felt that the Final Fantasy style of putting the PCs on one side and the monsters on the other, which was explicitly inspired by American football of all things, is a great reflection of the type of abstract combat that a lot of lazy DMs implement instead of actually tracking positions when using Theater of the Mind. That might well be, but I see the Final Fantasy screen as a division of the game table more than the battlefield. I really hope that FF players didn't see a 50-yard-line down the middle of their screens while fighting, despite the resemblance. Really? It's still more than the sorcerer gets. It's probably not fair, but I was comparing wizards to wizards. Maybe sorcerers don't need a lot of spells, but I was spoiled by D&D's wizards - limited only by the size of their spellbooks. For what it's worth, Morrus, I listened to the first half-hour of the podcast leading up to the end of this post, but still haven't heard about the Greatest D&D Video Game ever. Are there any plans to post podcast timestamps on the Podbean site?

  • 08:28 PM - M3woods mentioned Morrus in post It's the official WOIN character builder!
Coding that information wouldn’t be too hard. What would be hard is all the data entry. It would take days of work to enter all the text of all the exploits etc. I haven’t even added the OLD, NOW, and 2000AD careers yet.Hey, Morrus, what does the php spreadsheet look like? I have a lot of the racial, career, and exploit data typed into an excel spreadsheet. Would you be able to use that easily?
  • 04:33 PM - Emerikol mentioned Morrus in post What are you doing / what hooked you about WOIN?
Morrus Actually something just hit me. With your approach a person with six dice will have a higher chance of a critical failure than a person with five dice. Maybe a number of ones on two fewer dice than the total with an absolute minimum of two dice. This makes high dice pools almost impossible to critically fail but maybe that is okay for now. Your way isn't the end of the world. I like thinking about the probabiliities etc... Thanks again for the info.
  • 02:02 PM - Maelish mentioned Morrus in post Who knows PHP?
@Morrus Will you post a link to your completed tool? I do PHP as well, this is a tool of mine. I'm sure you'll recognize this Fantasy Coin Calculator from an old Dragon Magazine article. Which brings up a question of my own, have there been any newer articles like Coins in a Coffer? I wouldn't mind adding a new feature or two.

So rip the book in half or something. Or don't read the bit you don't need. You're equating format with game design. I mean, they could give you 600 1-page books if you like? Does that make it the best game design? I think format is actually part of the design. A good game design should take minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. If the format essentially inhibits a new audience from learning it in minutes, then it's a design flaw in my view. If you can take another game doing exactly the same thing, but in a more accessible way, then that is a design feature. And I don't think people will find tearing the book in two a ready solution. I think they just won't buy it.

How many pages is a characteristic of a well designed game? And in what font size? Anything that takes longer than it needs to, in order to provide a 'basic game' is too long. YMMV but I'd present several games that have made their core books of similar dimensions and have had consumer feedback that has made them reconsider. Champions for example, had to effectively replace their Hero 6th edition with a 250 page 'Champions Complete' book because the game had become considered too unwieldy. Beyond that, if it's chief competitor is getting it's own rules out there in substantially more concise fashion then you'd think someone in the design team would have taken this under consideration. For their sake, one can only hope that they've got a good contigency with a Starter set as, even if it is anecdotally, I know lots of gamers that would automatically be turned off by any D&Desque game merely by mentioning it is a 600 page book. Consider that the most common criticsm levied against Pathfin...

  • 06:01 PM - epithet quoted Morrus in post Dragon Talk Interview with Kate Welch re Ghosts of Saltmarsh
That's a really unkind, and uncharitable rewrite of what she said. Respectfully, I think it is fair. She dismissed Greyhawk as a "vintage" setting, in contrast to the Forgotten Realms which Ed began publishing in Dragon in 1979, and which had it's big "Gray Box" release in 1987. Greyhawk was originally published in 1980, and updated as part of the "Living Greyhawk" campaign through 2008. They're both "vintage" settings dating back to TSR. She went on to imply, to my ears anyway, an association between Greyhawk fans and the "gatekeeping" that Mearls made comments about when she was hired, referring to a "barrier" and a "gate" that Greyhawk, or its lore, or its fandom represents. It is difficult to take her comments as anything other than entirely dismissive of both Greyhawk and its fans. She spoke about Greyhawk lore as something that not a lot of people (including herself) are interested in. She suggested that the Forgotten Realms is more "new-player friendly" as if that is the cause of...

Is it bad that I actually quite like that? Yes. Yes it is! Admittedly, it might be a fun alternative Monster Manual, presented somewhat like an "in-world" tome of monstrous lore, but I'd hate to see how a long stat block like a dragon or vampire would look.

Wow. For the record, I disagree strongly with every single thing you said here. That's fine :) Do you disagree strongly that 5e's foundations are at once a looser system yet mechanically tight and everything functions rather well? Do you disagree strongly that there are deliberate traps that have been designed into the 3x edition systems and Pathfinder and that lot of that system does have poor choices? Do you disagree strongly that a designer in the 3x edition systems and Pathfinder could intentionally or accidentally design poor mechanics into the system in addition to good and well designed mechanics? I mean 5e isn't a flawless system by any means and there have been design choices in that system that are also baffling but they also managed to fix more of the glaring issues of its predecessors for the better IMO. I do feel that whether Paizo has a solid mechanical design history is subjective, and I've had more poor experiences with the system, as both a DM and a player but t...

I’m sure they won’t struggle to get any permission they need. I wouldn’t be surprised to see WotC ask *them* to feature D&D branding. D&D does NOT have a good track record on film. But even if that was not an issue, explaining what Mind Flayers are, the whole hive mind thing, and elder brain, etc. Would waste a lot of precious animation time to explain. The Briarwoods are vampire despots. Easy-peasy to convey to the new viewer without a lot of exposition. Assuming that they can. The D&D brand has never done well in movie form, but it has been passed around between a few studios, so the rights to publish something explicitly D&D-labelled in movie or series form may not actually lie with WotC right now. Unless google has failed me, Warner Bros own the D&D movie rights and have a film in production for a 2021 date. No idea if that's still true, though. They'll probably blow through the $5.75m goal before the stream tomorrow night.

Choosing a power to use in 4e is comparable to declaring the RM OB/DB split - it sets your tactical orientation for the round; comparing to defence is comparable to subtracting deffence in RM (though mathematically easier); and rolling damage is comparable to rolling a crit. But in 4e there are no table look-ups, which are a...
