Get off your damn high horse already. While everyone is sitting here theorycrafting and armchair quarterbacking, OverlordOcelot actually made an attempt to collect real data about the situation. That is a hell of a lot more than anyone else in this thread can claim. Now you want to argue some of the facts of the analysis, feel free, but lets turn off the damn sneer.

Heh. Two friends of mine got into a drinking contest at a larp. The only problem was, one of them was drinking vodka, and the other was (unbeknownst to the first) drinking water. It didn't end well for the first. No, really, it didn't end well. We almost had to take him to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. Because he was like, "Well, if she's not even feeling it, I *must* still be...

In the Battletech and Mechwarrior universe, someone did calculations and figured out that mechs as drawn are actually less dense than water. My headcanon for ZEITGEIST is that Borne's made of adamantine that was magically alloyed with other metals, sort of like how adding a bit of carbon to iron makes steel. Without magic he'd collapse, but he's so suffused with magic he's impossible to dispel.

Define "good". For example, if I am having one PC face off agianst one NPC, anything particularly complicated, or that will take up a whole lot of time focusing on how many vodka shots one player makes while the others sit on their hands waiting for their compatriot to become staggeringly drunk would not be "good". We wouldn't want to make one person the focus of the action for an entire...

That's okay. Understanding may be achievable. Consider - fights are not the only thing in a D&D game. If a player (or group of players) is really interested in some aspect of the game other than fights, then maybe having the fights be deadly is not leading the players to their fun very well.

Um, pemerton? You don't get to say what the OP meant. Really, deciding that the OP should follow *your* use of the terms is a bit on-the-nose ironic in a thread largely *about questioning definitions*. Please, if his form does not seem coherent, rather than tell him he is wrong, ask questions probing where your differences lie, hm? I think you'll find it far more constructive.

I think it might be more clear to say, a prescriptivist thinks we have rules for language that we must follow. A descriptivist feels the rules describe the language as it currently is[, and that as use changes, the rules will change. There is a better view, IMHO. Right now, short term, if you want to be understood, you should follow the rules. Long term, it is empirically shown that...

Not necessarily, no. Specifically, there are games where you do not take on a role of one of the characters and all players have sway over all characters within the narrative. This would not be a role-playing game, but would be a story-telling game. You see, this is a problem with making definitions - you need to consider the *entire space* within which you are making your definition. ...

Great list! I agree with you on Forgetful and Spendthrift. You can use skills with any attribute as long as the GM agrees, so intimidation and Disfigured would be a good combo for a strong character. A STR (intimidation) check with the disfigured trait would be a good combo.

That being said... "the rules are descriptive" is insufficient as a definition. If nothing else, it fails to differentiate role-playing games from story-telling games, which I expect we would find are also descriptive. It probably also fails to differentiate from some forms of simulation games - like SimCity, where within a domain, you are largely allowed to do whatever you darn well feel like....

I think pointing out that there are some actions that are not allowed is missing the point. Yes, my character doesn't have the wings, spells, or magic items that allow them to fly, so they cannot fly. That doesn't make the game suddenly 100% prescriptive. I think the central point is still there - if you are playing chess, you have a list of allowed moves, and *everything else* is...

To me it comes down to presentation. If the party goes into an area that is known to be fraught with heinous, over the top peril, than I would expect no surprise when said peril occurs. But I would't throw such a threat if they were just doing a diplomatic mission for example, as the peril would feel more arbitrary to me at that point.

The key to the Solar is its 150 ft flying speed. Effectively unless you have a means of immobilizing it, it can kite indefinitely, or it can just teleport back 120 feet if necessary. So for an Empryean vs a Solar it comes down to Bolt vs Slaying Longbow. Overall, bolt has a +3 attack advantage (+2, and the Solar's AC is 1 lower) and gets to attack twice through the legendary action. Slaying...

I will disagree to a point here. Again, we are talking about a creature that is supposed to be extremely difficult, maybe nigh impossible for a party to defeat. This to me is the equivalent of a party asking for a god's personal password and wondering why the knowledge check DC is outside of their possible values. Further, an "impossible" roll does serve a few functions. One, it lets other...

As I said, watch surrogates. Also, if you don't want this stuff in your game, just disallow it. Come up with a reason. Pemberton has secret knowledge that they don't manage to replicate during the span of the campaign. Like, we figured out how to make nukes 70 years ago, but some folks still have a hard time doing it. It's okay if the PCs can't do everything.

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

WOIN's "W-Series" of adventures/settings continues with Santiago: A Myth of the Far Future, based on the novel by Mike Resnick. Can a group of bounty hunters track down the most notorious bandit in the galaxy before their rivals do? Catch the most wanted criminal in the galaxy! Are there any good ways to increase a spell's resistance to remove curse or dispel magic? I would love to have the organization infiltrate some of the police force but I would assume such a place would do routine screenings to ensure their people don't have magical compulsions or curses. A simple remove curse can even take out a full 9th level geas, so wanted to see if there were ways to...

For the next two weeks, we''re going to try something new. This is an experiment, and there is a reasonable chance that it might not work out. For the next two weeks you may put your promotional/publisher posts in the relevant game forum. So if you have a Kickstarter for a new D&D 5E book, you may put it in the 5E forum instead (that's instead, not as-well-as). If the forums end up being...

Agreed. I feel like it should be several adventures worth of planning and prep to be able to go toe to toe with such a creature. If your facing something 10 CR higher than you, you should get curb stomped in most cases.

Yeah, what got me thinking about it is, "what's the difference between, 'never understood what you are saying,' and 'never heard you say it in the first place?' " Recognition of the command sounds like it's key to the magic of the spell.

Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAW: Sounds like it wouldn't matter. They are affected by the Geas, they take the damage. RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Now now Taran, you started this tangent by noting frustration with DMs who ignore dodging and spells like sanctuary. Overlord is basically saying turnaround is fair play, that as much as DMs may use in game knowledge to make their monsters more tactical, players can do it too.

I don't know if this is in similar vein or not, but I used to play with a guy who for some reason, consciously or not, decided to "one-up" every PC I played by playing a PC with the same party role, but with lots of rules-tweaking to make the PC better. It was kind of obvious after a while: (1) I would create a PC, (2) he would get tired of the PC he was playing and retire them, and (3) a new PC...

Lets say a person was subjected to a GEAS, but then shortly after their memory was modified so they don't remember getting the GEAS effect. Would they have any knowledge or innate way to avoid the actions restricted by the GEAS, or would they just stumble into it and take the damage?

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

"Two things I can't stand are racism and the Dutch!" - Michael Caine's character in one of those Austin Powers movies. When you quote a movie, quote it correctly! So that everyone can bake in it's glorious contrariety... ;-) Morrus: The article isn't discussing ANY particular culture, that would be great content! But your doing now what we all don't like saying that Africa or the Orient is a culture, it isn't. It's a collection of cultures. Instead of authors raving against things that are wrong with RPG products, why not show them how it's done?

  • 01:47 AM - thorgrit mentioned Morrus in post Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!
I'm interested, but cautiously optimistic. For my own purposes, I looked forward to Starfinder but it turned out to be too complicated for me to figure out character creation just reading the book. I remember when they came out with Unchained, and I was wondering if they'd use that to springboard off a new revised PF.5 or something, bundling the idea of traits and backgrounds and things all in together on a new core rulebook. Can do nothing but wait and see. I'm super pessimistic about any conversion guidelines that promise more than "just remake characters from the ground up" and "you can use old published adventures but ignore all the stats and use the new stats instead". Morrus: the link "Paizo has just announced" at the beginning appears to only point to the Paizo blog root, which I'm assuming will change over time. http://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo5lkl9?First-Look-at-the-Pathfinder-Playtest is the link to the specific announcement post.

  • 04:30 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post Make Up a Goblin Fact
Shouldn't this be a Wiki post? Would make it a whole lot easier to read previous facts. And number them. Like it says in the title. Making a table of random goblin traits to roll on so they're not all generic cannon fodder. Why should they be generic? Now dwarfs, they're all the same if you ask me. 63 (assuming the last numbered ones, though incorrect, actually deserved to be numbered): If you hit a goblin on the head hard enough, and roll a 1, it sinks into the ground and sprouts up from the ground at full hit points, just two feet away. Edit: Ah, Threaded Mode. Nice touch, Morrus. Any chance we could get some Word Wrap in there, and a resizable window?

  • 12:26 AM - Eltab mentioned Morrus in post 5e EPIC MONSTER UPDATES
Is there a post number limit? @Morrus can answer this definitively, if anybody can (and hopefully I just drew his attention to your question). I don't block anybody - no idea if anybody else blocks me - and the post count is 1019 at this time (51 pages as I have the format settings). I don't see any problems here yet. HOWEVER, I've seen other threads break down if they have many large posts in them. Some of the CharOp threads found out the hard way that there IS a "max post length" limit; this may eventually come back to bite your first page. I've only perused the thread here and there, but this sounds like awesome work. For a homebrew project, I'm going to have to compare your version of the Out of the Abyss demon lords to the "by-the-book" published versions. My BBEG is an FR-specific demon lord, and I want the fight against him to feel like the PCs really have saved the world from a Great Evil.

  • 11:25 AM - CubicsRube mentioned Morrus in post Single mechanics from an RPG you love
Wow. Theres a lot of ideas i like on an individual scale, but if i ever made them into a single system it'd be a frakenstein! I love adv/disad in 5e. Its easily my favourite thing in 5e for the same reason as Morrus above outlined. I love bennies. It makes heroes seem truly heroic to me and it allows them to turn the tide of fate to their favour. Im currently digging fria ligans core mechanics of the myz rules. Essentially, roll a 6 and its a success. Roll more 6es and you can use them to buy effects. Simple and elegant. I adore shadow of the demon lords spell schools and modular classess. In fact next campaign i want to run is curse of strahd converted to that system. I also enjoy unknown armies 3e shock gauges and trauma rules. I think they are the most realistic and interesting trauma and insanity rules in an rpg period. Dungeon worlds fronts are great for behind the scene gming. Shadowruns magic as a skill system woth their risk/reward on castuming at high power levels is the most magicy feeling system i think ivve played in. I'm sure theres more, but thats what i can remember at the moment!

I like how this guy in the link below (I feel like heís familiar... like heís up to something these days... something big) has ported skill challenges into 5e. Iíve already incorporated a few of my own design into our current campaign and theyíve gone well. I like Morrusís suggestion not to announce ďnow it's time for a skill challenge!Ē to the players. Seems pretty obvious, but pretty sure I did just that... so could have gone even better! Lol https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GvOeqDpkBm8

  • 05:25 AM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Starting Adventure 5.
Erg. I haven't read the details of that for years. Hm. PbPs take forever usually. So I'd either just lay it out as a background thing, or make it ultra simplified. Morrus, I don't recall James's screen name to ping him, but maybe he could use this as a baseline for converting this scene in the 5e version, which should probably be more rules-lite. To take down Kell, the Flint Police will be going on numerous missions over the next few days. {Brief overview of their missions.} You're coordinating them, though, so together the team needs to accomplish the following five tasks. For any of these tasks, you can just make a skill check to represent general planning time, or we can roleplay a bit if you want to do something hands-on, or if you have a clever idea you want to pitch. You might call a favor in instead and have someone else make the check on your behalf. You can split the tasks up however you like, but it takes 4 hours for a PC to make each of these skill checks, so you probably want to divide them among the party. The more tasks you succeed at, the better the task force is at taking down Kell's crime syndicate. The DCs are secret. Whenever y...

I contributed when ENWorld went completely down several years ago, and I guess I never set up my ongoing contribution at that point. So, Morrus, what do you prefer? I like the color scheme. Very pneumatic control panel. Does the symbol repeated on the walls mean something special? ..and the fact that they are only alive because of a 1 in a trillion trillion trillion trillion chance of a passing spaceship picking them up in space. That was very Hitchhiker's Guide-like (I seem to recall that happening multiple times throughout them books). Where did the spectacles come from?
  • 03:06 AM - Slit518 quoted Morrus in post WOTC is hiring a new Game Designer for D&D
There arenít rules. The person who is hiring will look at your resume and decide if they want to interview you. If they interview you, theyíll then decide if they want to hire you. You canít rules-lawyer it or get them to hire you on a technicality. I feel weird explaining the concept of a job application to somebody. Are you particularly young? Iím guessing youíve not applied for a job before? Generally Iíd suggest viewing the job requirements in the spirit theyíre intended. No, I am not young. I just figured they would need examples of such things, but something attached to an NDA for example does not have examples. But Jester David explains it better in a below response.
  • 02:27 AM - Slit518 quoted Morrus in post WOTC is hiring a new Game Designer for D&D
Yes, but theyíll look at it. How does things you can't talk about work? Like let's say you did some work for Warner Brothers (which I didn't), but you have an NDA until the product is revealed. And in that product you have some credits. How does that work?!?

I personally prefer names like Glasstaff and The Black Spider over Sharokina and Sahastra, as there's no way on earth I'm going to remember the latter. And I don't think Glasstaff is any worse than Skywalker. Skywalker is a terrible name as well, only it is meant to be campy. The bad name is intentional with Star Wars. But try saying the name "Glasstaff" to yourself, and now say the name "Sharokina". Which of the two sounds more menacing? Opinions can of course differ on what makes a good name (and thats fine), but for me, it is definitely the latter that sounds better. Then there's a name like Aram Seen the Unseen, which I only had to mention once and my players never forgot it. It has a lyrical quality to it that just makes it work. I'm fine with Glasstaff, but Phandelver just didn't work for me or my group and I think the names were a factor. Conversely I'm loving the Gygaxian names in Village of Hommlet - Ostler Gundigroot, Furnok of Ferd, Lareth the Beautiful, Rufus & Burne. Phand...

Daleks lose their potency when they're defeated twice a year. Or psychoanalyzed into wanting to ex-ter-min-ate the other Daleks, all by their lonesome. (Would the Doctor recognize if she met THAT one again?)
  • 06:55 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted Morrus in post New 5e Magazine - Rolled & Told
Issue #0 contains an adventure with comics illustrating scenes relevant to it. But also some interesting pregens, and an essay waxing poetic on The Mimic. I thought issue #0 had great ideas, and the art was charming, but some of the execution couldíve been better. I'm not super clear what this is. Is it an adventure combined with a comic? If so, that sounds quite cool.

The actor. I associate him with daytime quiz shows. Oh. Yeah, I can see that could be a bit distracting. I now have this image of Alex Trebek showing up in Star Trek: Discovery, or something like that.

Still not sold on Bradley Walsh. The actor, or the character. As I was watching, I was thinking, "Oh, yeah, here's how we know Companions. They are the ones that walk *toward* the weird space things." And then here's this guy who... doesn't. He has a normal, credible amount of fear of things that go ZAP! in the night. I find that... refreshing. They will have a balancing act over the man's fears vs staying with the Doctor, but if they can pull it off, it is markedly different perspective than we usually get.

  • 08:38 AM - Imaculata quoted Morrus in post Aquaman Extended Trailer
What an odd thing to say. Well, they have a lot of competition towards the end of the year (especially because Dead Pool 2 is getting a rerelease). Maybe they are giving us a much better look at the movie to convince the audience that this is the movie they should be seeing. Surely DC is aware that a lot of their recent movies haven't exactly had a good reception, so they do have some convincing to do. After seeing this trailer, I still don't think this will be good. It is a pity that even when they shoot an action scene that is not underwater, it still looks 95% CGI. It is kind of like watching a cartoon. I understand that all of the Atlantean stuff has to be done in CGI, but some of the above water stuff as well? It often feels like they are just throwing computer effects at the screen, hoping it will sell enough tickets. I hope this is a good movie. I hope it is like the Wonder Woman movie, and that DC is occasionally able to turn out something some what decent. But I remain highl...

I'm not going to watch that. 5 minutes is too much of the film for a trailer! I'm going to see the movie anyhow, but I don't want it completely spoiled. Most of it is really just two extended scenes. It's like watching a couple clips from an interview show interspersed with snippets.

  • 12:50 PM - ajevans quoted Morrus in post Rules for Corruption
OLD already has corruption rules (in the appendix). I initially missed that, it exists but it doesn't quite fit the purpose for the setting. I think the track minus the Light is a good way of tracking more permanent points, however I'm after something more temporary. Something that can be used as a resource that you risk permanent corruption by using, i.e I want players to be able to use magic but feel it's dangerous and if I they push it there's a risk.

  • 07:24 PM - Steven Barker quoted Morrus in post Some comments and questions about O.L.D.'s Magic system
Wowzers. That will take a lot of unpacking! That's a LOT of questions! :) Thanks for your answers so far! The spellcraft skill has a section on page 156. It is knowledge about magic, as opposed to magical skill. Yeah, that's the section were I saw it before. It's listed there, but not in Fantasy Careers anywhere. It's not in any of the skill categories, nor listed by any career as a career skill. So how do you learn spellcraft? A minute is 10 rounds. I get asked that a lot, and it will be highlighted in v1.2 to make it clear. This is very useful to know, thanks! (RE: creation vs transformation elemental damage effects) They're different effects. One creates an object you'd need to use in some way, the other creates an area which affects all who enter it. I think I understand that, but it seems like the prices are backwards. An item that can deal 1 damage/round if I can find a way to get you to touch it seems worse than terrain that does the same (especially difficult terrain, which is a...
