Not even slightly. I mean, if I found out a player was deliberately using a loaded die (something that's never happened in 30 years of gaming, and I suspect never will) I guess that would need a conversation. But otherwise? Nope.

GaryCon is a blast! Itís also growing fast. I wouldnít be surprised if they put a cap on attendance. Also GameHoleCon is awesome and is one of the big three or four bucket list cons in my humble opinion. I think the edition treadmill fatigue hits a lot of folks. Which makes 5es continued blockbuster growth even more amazing.

I usually choose to not answer that question. Unless you are making the metaphysics a plot point in the campaign, it isn't something that *needs* an answer. But then, I run games in which the gods generally do not appear in person (or even in avatar), so that there's always a question as to what they are, or even if they exist.

Also note "the weave" is very specifically a Forgotten Realms concept, not a generic D&D one. There is also a problem with saying "the power comes form the cleric" and then noting that without access to the weave, there is no spell to be had. That means there isn't one "the power" but several elements that comprise power, and the cleric doesn't have some of them innate to themselves. ...

Characters had hit points, but the GM was coached to wreck PCs in ways that are more interesting than death by attrition. In the new Over the Edge (due out in June), a character dies or knocked out of the action if they get wrecked (stricken) three times. Losing a dice throw is an easy way for your character to get wrecked.

Yeah, my revised Over the Edge game typically handles combats with single dice throws. The action at the table goes really fast when a fight doesn't slow things down.

Not really. Yes, things take more time when something goes wrong, but Hofstadter's Law is less about things going wrong, and m ore about how poorly humans estimate. Basically, even if everything goes well, your estimate of completion date will still be wrong.

No. It is informing folks that putting a "-" sign on a thread title does not change the rules that apply to posts. Dude, he wants to be able to discuss a bit of media now and then without having it swamped by the same old arguments time after time. That's not "intolerant of differing views", that's not wanting to listen to the same trash talk 17 times over. It gets old.

I think that enough people play with various elements that they might focus upon that the best you should say is, "RPG play is *usually* not a literary endeavor, because the quality of form is not a common focus." Going beyond that is making claims on the community that nobody really has the power to do, hey what?

I suspect that the game would then become dominated by the folks who sit at their computers for long periods each day, with spare time ready and able to post, and those who don't have the availability will be marginalized as players. The marginalized players will not feel much more connection to the game, and will drop away.

I wonder if minus the huge investment into the Pathfinder video game, it might be making more money for them than the RPG. Maybe they don't care if the RPG is all that successful as much as they care about IP for the video game? Like Marvel with Movies? I mean I'm sure they care about a quality RPG product, but maybe it isn't really the bacon any more?

Sure. Any location - whether big like Twitter or small like here - is just a potential sparking point for a bigger effect. Usually it isnít, but sometimes something happens, and careers end and brands get damaged. One guy at a company staying quiet for a bit is prudent.l, lest it escalate (which it probably wouldnít, but itís not a risk worth taking).

In 13th Age, by default the party can "flee" at any point in a fight, and all the characters survive (unless they're already dead). The penalty is a "campaign loss," as in, something goes badly in the game world as a result. The rule doesn't prevent all PC deaths, but it's a big help. Back in 2008, I wrote up that rule and posted it on Gleemax, the short-lived digital platform that Wizards of the...

That said, isn't it a private building owned by the Catholic Church? They don't need donations or French taxpayer money to rebuild it. They have billions.

Save or Die effects aren't great for monsters because there's too much riding on a single roll. They're not great for player-character powers because they invalidate the way most characters bring down enemies: hit point attrition. In 13th Age, we picked up a rule from Dave Hargrave's Arduin Adventure game. Save-or-die effects have a hit point cap. The death lord PC in our game uses the "Sever...

Depends on what you mean by, "literary." There's some who will use it to mean, "of a quality and/or style similar to critically acclaimed literature." Much like we talk about a game having "cinematic action" if we feel it evokes the style and feeling and imagery of Hollywood action movies. From context, I expect that's in the ballpark of what you mean. With that qualifying presumption,...

Correct. Itís a derogatory term (along withĒSJWĒ, etc), designed specifically to deride, dismiss, and exclude inclusive speech*, and as such is not allowed here. *Google Popperís Theorem before anybody wittily comments on that sentence.

Yep. *If* it rolls. You realize that just one die instead kinda flopping and not rolling can impact the average result when rolling stats, yes? That's why I recommend the cup and dice tower, as those help insure rolling.

Um, which side, exactly, has destroyed entire inhabited planets to strike fear in the hearts of the populace? Do we have any in-canon record of the Rebellion targeting civilians, or, in fact, attacking anything other than military installations or vessels? Even if we include the action against Jabba the Hutt as "Rebellion" (a dicey posit, at best), that is action against an acknowledged...

"I already have more than I need, so pick up the pace of publishing!" does not make a whole lot of sense, to me. How you physically roll the dice matters. Consider having her use a dice cup or dice tower, which significantly limit the ability to control the dice rolling, and see if the result changes.

It's not just the New York Times writing about D&D. The Washington Post is weighing in too! D&D has been featuring in mainstream media for a while. The BBC wrote about it last year, and sites like Forbes, and even Popular Mechanics, have articles about the game.

You can test it, if you have the courage. Roll 100 times (or more, if you like), and do a little math. https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/70802/how-can-i-test-whether-a-die-is-fair Note before you try this that having one's preferred narrative contradicted sometimes has adverse results. You may decide to live with your perception, rather than the harsh light of statistical analysis.

@Morrus Will you post a link to your completed tool? I do PHP as well, this is a tool of mine. I'm sure you'll recognize this Fantasy Coin Calculator from an old Dragon Magazine article. Which brings up a question of my own, have there been any newer articles like Coins in a Coffer? I wouldn't mind adding a new feature or two.

  • 10:07 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post D&D Has the Biggest Playerbase, So Why is it the Hardest for 3rd Party to Market Too?
Fair enough. I have to admit though, I find it a bit difficult to believe that Morrus has never seen 2pp used as a term on the boards. I have. But, hey, it's not really that big of an issue to be honest. Again, there are so few licensed publishers out there that it's not really a problem. As far as the original question goes, I'm actually frankly confused why someone would think that it's much harder for 3PP to get their name out there than it was, say, back in the d20 boom days. With the mountain of Patreons, Kickstarters and various other venues, I'm seeing an awful lot of pretty successful attempts at getting product out there. Thing is, there's just so much material out there that it can be pretty easy to get lost in the weeds.

  • 11:02 AM - Li Shenron mentioned Morrus in post PbP games: what works and what doesn't?
Oh and I have a suggestion for Morrus too... try to see if there is a possibility for adding a forum functionality by which a forum member can subscribe to a thread and get notifications when someone else replies to the thread. AFAIK this is not how it works at the moment, you get notifications only if you receive a PM, mention or XP. Having notifications on subscribed threads would greatly help a PbP player know when a game has progressed, and reach the thread in a couple of clicks rather than having to find it in the subforums.

...te, caring etc then men" so if a woman speaks up "loudly", she's acting against her role. I know that this holds true more in face-to-face environments, whereas online debates are often no more than mere black-on-white (or inversed) text. Still she identified as a woman. And from what I read, Afrodyte is done with playing the "nice little woman". She's (rightfully) upset about the fact that there are many victim-blaming posts or posts filled with micro-misogyny in this thread that were not being called out while her arguments were dissected. She's also under the impression that male-identifying posters are being less challenged and have it far easier being listened to. And I understand her. Because being a woman who's active online, who has a mind of her own and who gets vocal from time to time can be hard. That being said, I still think that ENWorld is one of the best places to discuss my/our hobby, including systemic problems in our community. And I'm really thankful for Morrus and the other mods to keep it this civil. (Because, honestly, other, more general gaming forums oftentimes look as if they're the little brethren of /b )

So I want to say I am sorry for the stuff I am missing and I want to do better. I donít do cons but since the problem is everywhere I need to step up and do better in general. In general women are very willing to give individual men several chances to get it right so long as they are trying to move in a positive direction. Personally, I'll excuse any first offense that is done without malice (doing something on purpose to push buttons is not without malice in my book). I'll even accept slip-ups if you keep trying to do better. We're all human (I didn't see any AI's here) and humans make mistakes, so I'm never looking for perfection. I'm looking for progress and growth. I'll be honest, this discussion has gone on to the point where I'm surprised. That's pleasantly surprising and speaks well for Morrus and ENWorld's moderation.

So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? No. That does not seem consistent with your viewpoint. Do you yield to authority (Morrus) and because lowkey13 has none per say in this environment you deem him as an enemy if he requests the same thing from you? No. Le me try to put the dots close together. Afrodyte has stated previously that if @Morrus feels that what she is doing should stop, then upon being notified of his choice as the moderator, Then she will respect his request as the moderator. At that time she would discontinue her attempt to demonstrate through her requests (Name, SSN, pic) instances in this discussion that she personally feels fall somewhere between unfriendly and hostile toward women.

Yet, I find it interesting that my fairly benign statements showing that I don't automatically trust every self-proclaimed good dude are getting more heat than some of the deeply unsettling things several posters have been saying in the past 15 pages I've been participating on this thread. That is a curious statement. The last 15 pages have been relatively mild compared to what had been posted before where Morrus got involved several times. As for you getting heat more than the trolls, citation needed. I'm not seeing any evidence of what you're claiming, especially given the XP count which equates to support. If you really think that an exaggerated demonstration of the daily precautions I have to take to avoid harassment and assault is unfairly blaming poor, innocent men who are just trying to have a discussion, you haven't been paying attention to what several women and men have been saying on this thread, and you are not on my side (whatever being on my side supposedly means), and it all of it sustains and supports the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in environments where people are supposed to be safe. So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? • 05:19 PM - Ratskinner quoted Morrus in post Group Iniative Order
Seems it would require a group of monsters with incredible tactical discipline acting as optimally as an SAS team. The D&D IGOUGO combat system creates many such oddities. While I still play D&D, this is one of the things I really like about systems like the Apocalypse Engine and Forged in the Dark, and even Two Hour Wargames. The chunkiness of D&D-style initiative bugs me increasingly over time.

  • 03:03 PM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
They're grown adults and extremely competent business people. They're also human, and humans do silly things.Thirteen years ago, WotC almost killed their business by taking away Dragon magazine. They barely recovered but a year later WotC hit them again by announcing 4e. Then WotC cut them out of the loop by not showing them the game they were working on, leaving the company floundering. Then Paizo turned the company around and became the biggest name in the industry. Only to be left in the dust when WotC brought D&D back. It's hard not to feel bitter when competition that wronged you repeatedly is busy lapping you. Last year, any Pathfinder 1 releases were doing to be DOA. Who's going to buy a new hardcover during the playtest? But they still had a bunch of staff on payroll. Enough to do four hardcovers a year. Whatís a sound business reason for them NOT to release cheap book of 5e monsters with art recycled from Bestiaries 2 through 6 farmed out to 5e freelancers? It would have kept th...

Hmmmm. What *is* the rule for simultaneous initiative? Having them all move then all attack creates a massive tactical advantage over having them each move then attack. I can not find one. I also see nothing on not have the same type of monsters going on same initiative count.

  • 11:51 PM - dragoner quoted Morrus in post There's An Altered Carbon RPG Coming
Every licensed property is based on a show or book that contains characters. You donít have to play Conan or Luke or Picard or Drizzt. You play your own characters in that world. It feels kinda weird explaining that. Yes, however basing something around an IP like Star Trek, The Expanse, Firefly, etc.; that already have a group dynamic, feels like it would be an easier adaptation. Altered Carbon is mostly about Kovacs, not exploring the setting, not much world building going on with San Francisco, where the Methuselahs have kept it mostly the same as the 20th century.
  • 06:03 PM - jasper quoted Morrus in post Group Iniative Order
No, I just have each move then attack rather than move all of them then all of them attack, unless theyíre particularly tactically efficient. Monsters act according to their abilities, not mine. Blood hawks have pack tactics. And from the module, "...that swarm the characters. They try to work in groups of two in order to take advantage of their pack tactics ability" I generally try to move all the monsters(if they have to) first, then attack, then move. Because I sometimes forget monsters if they are scattered out on the map. (of course half the time my players FORGET to tell me monster 7,8,9 neither move or attacked.)
  • 04:58 PM - jasper quoted Morrus in post Group Iniative Order
Whatever works for you, I guess. For me, monsters always operating with split-second optimal group tactical precision isn't interesting. So all your monsters have a separate init? I think you over stating the case. The is a boss fight with waves. First wave is 4 or 5 guards. Depending on how you did earlier. The boss is protected by box text. Once the first wave is killed, the second wave comes. Second wave is 8 blood hawks which will operate in teams of two using pack tactics. So in this case one pc is not a target. The villain is escaping but can be engaged by missile weapons. If both blood hawks hit, the avg damage will zero a wizard. The hippogriff is also present. But the group can grab the prisoner and retreat. I can see this being a tpk if the dm is not careful. Especially if everyone is first level. While I don't train my monsters to SAS team tactics, I will use their abilities. I have dm this mission at least six times. How I run depends on the players and levels of pcs.
  • 03:33 PM - iserith quoted Morrus in post Group Iniative Order
Seems it would require a group of monsters with incredible tactical discipline acting as optimally as an SAS team. Or any reasonable fictional justification really. The first blood hawk swoops in and screeches, putting on a territorial display, but does not attack until the other hawks fly in. For example.
  • 02:24 PM - iserith quoted Morrus in post Group Iniative Order
Hmmmm. What *is* the rule for simultaneous initiative? Having them all move then all attack creates a massive tactical advantage over having them each move then attack. Like monsters all go on the same initiative. They act individually at the DM's discretion at that initiative count. Readied actions, if used, are resolved as normal.
  • 01:18 PM - GrumpyChromosome quoted Morrus in post O.L.D. v1.2 Playtest Version
That's not an error. The global rule is that an attribute check (and an attack is one) includes a skill and equipment if appropriate. I understand that, but it is unclear which skill is appropriate for such attacks, given that they are not explicitly created by a specific magic skill. A general rule somewhere, even just "when in doubt for magic attacks, allow evoke or throwing" would be useful. Also, some do not indicate which Attribute should be used, and in Illusory Attack's case, even the range is not explicitly stated.

  • 07:02 PM - zztong quoted Morrus in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
One assumes they feel the latter's long-term erosion would be greater than the former's short-term profit, and that they've thought about it more than we have. Agreed, and I certainly respect yours and others opinions on the matter. I admit Paizo has the best information and that I'm only an armchair quarterback. I also admit that my opinion is colored by my desires and other opinions of PF1 and PF2. Paizo and I clearly see their value to be in different places. I see Golarion and their APs as their greatest long-term value and PF2 as a short-term score. As such, I think they're better positioned to sell Golarion across game systems than only selling it to part of the fragmenting Pathfinder audience.

  • 01:14 PM - zztong quoted Morrus in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
I have zero insight into their decision making process, or anything else, but I suspect that if they did that their core rulebook sales would suffer. You could ask why doesn't Apple sell Android products? Because it would erode their own brand. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm sure that enters into the thinking. But I would point out that customers usually only purchase one cell phone, but often purchase materials for more than one game system. Extending Golarion and its APs to D&D5e does not require new art or stories, only a system conversion and adjusted layouts. If that were 25% more effort I'd have to think that would be profitable in light that 5e's base is much bigger. The harder pitch (IMO) is continuing to offer APs for PF1. While I personally would enjoy/prefer that, I can see where that might hold back the adoption of PF2. Or, maybe I'm just full of it. This is the Internet. :)

  • 09:25 PM - Enevhar Aldarion quoted Morrus in post [Merged] D&D forum renaming thread
Since all I did was change the name of two forums, thereís no way it could have unsubscribed you from anything. Then some other glitch happened at about the same time. I only keep subscriptions to threads I have commented on, and I go through every few months and unsubscribe to the oldest stuff that has gone inactive or that I no longer have interest in. So I probably had between 5 and 10 subscribed threads since the last time I did that. But when I realized I was only getting email notifications for one thread, even though there should have been others, I checked my list and there was only that one thread subscribed. I went ahead and unsubscribed from that one, since I was not reading it anymore, but I have no idea what happened to the rest that should have still been on my list. Edit: and I just went now to look and make sure this thread was showing as subscribed, and there are 24 other threads showing now that were not when I made my other post. Some of the ones showing again are ones I ...
  • 05:53 PM - Sacrosanct quoted Morrus in post It's Not A Cartoon, But What Is It?
Yep, the Endless Quest series relaunched recently. Hopefully future books get run by an editor first before being published. Those four class based Endless Quest books were filled with errors. Lots of gender changes depending on which options you chose lol. First it was "he", then later it was a "she", then back to a "he" again ;) Having written choose your own adventure books myself, I understand the additional challenges of putting it all together logistically, but that's no excuse for major continuity changes like that. Also like things that being a fighter, 90% of the choices that involved fighting resulted in death lol. I can see that with the rogue, or wizard, but the fighter class? You get punished for doing what he does best. That struck me as odd. Although it was neat that the one use of what could be described as action surge was actually out of combat (showcasing it's versatility by escaping the collapsing dungeon).
  • 05:30 PM - Mike Myler quoted Morrus in post Epic Monsters: Black Shuck (5E)
Being a fan-geek of all things British, I've actually heard of Black Shuck but I don't think I ever realized it only had one eye It wasn't the first thing I read about this creature but it came up more than once (I think--this was originally written many moons ago). That said it appears several times in a few different places so it's not unlikely that you simply were never presented a cyclopean Black Shuck! I like it! I first read about Black Schuck in a kids mythology book I bought at school book fair. I used it in my game as protector of an ancient graveyard. I just reskinned a hell hound, changed the fire to necrotic and added some HD. I think i like your version better, especially the part about him being the leader of a dire wolf/cyclops pack. <3! Even me? 105779 You might want to make it so that Black Shuck's pack is immune to its howl. And it should be able to summon fog. And for a legendary creature, it has a suspicious lack of Legendary Actions. Misty...
