I don't know what "traditional Star Trek" is? every show has bene very different. I love Discovery, and my favourite Star Trek is the TOS movies II-IV trilogy, if that helps. The main problem with the show is avoiding the hatewatchers.

“Roll-play versus Role-play” has always been around - this is maybe the seventh long-running thread I can remember on these forums on the topic? I feel like it’s one of those kinds of topics that absolutely NEED to get discussed if ANY group is gathering for the first time, along with things like “house rules” and “sensitive subject matter/X Cards.” Both groups I game in enjoy a fairly large...

It’s not a question of just flipping a switch. PoD needs different files to the onscreen PDF. It’s actually quite a bit of extra work and reformatting, followed by an approval process at DTFPG’s end, and then ordering and paying for a proof. If they plan to change it at all, they’d have to do that all over again each time.

There's a range of different campaign management tools available; some free, some not so. RPG Encounters is a free web app designed to work with and sync between all your devices. The app currently works with four game systems: D&D 5E, Savage Worlds, Stars...

There are styles that exist through large swaths of the gaming community that most of us an recognize. The argument arises because media consumption sets expectations. There was a time, way back when, that the group I played with did declarations. But, that was back in 1e, and quite frankly, too many times for both PC and NPC that led to nonsensical dud actions. Most games these days don't have declaration like that as part of their design these days.

I would not advise any new writer to accept less than 3c/w. And that’s really basement rate pay. Accepting less than that normalises it. Editing is a separate job, paid similarly per word. And yes, payment upon acceptance is appropriate. Good call on that! :)

The GM should always be free to say that something doesn’t apply. That said, think of it like comic books - people die all the time only to come back later. The only limit is a (semi) plausible reason. For the other question, it’s not really the number of exploits which makes something powerful. It how they combine. A thousand abilities gives a PC lots of versatility throughout any encounters...

To be clear - the action/rescue scene can be totally improv, no problem. I do run a lot of GUMSHOE, as the main game I run at home is Ashen Stars - and there what I plot out is the mystery. Folks tend to overestimate their ability to create a sensible mystery by improv - when you just make up mystery elements on the fly, without time to *think* about how they fit together, you tend to have plot...

But I *do* buy RPGs because they’re associated with a property I like. I have multiple Star Wars and Star Trek RPGs! I don’t know if that’s common or unusual. From my experience selling the Judge Dredd game, Dredd is the draw, not the system or me.

We all assume that if they publish a game, they will shift their show to *use* the game. D&D players will no longer have a particular reason to take in their show, and the show won't be an advertisement for D&D. Which means effectively breaking the mutual-marketing relationship between them. That's what would get "blown up". The real question isn't whether they can publish a game. The...

You have an issue trying to justify it being a long and arduous overland journey, though, especially with an ocean in the way. Why don't they get on an eagle jet plane and just fly there? You may want the thematic element that carrying The One Thing is bad for you. A radioactive power cell, maybe? Then read a bunch of Captain America comics, where the Red Skull is trying to bring...

Well, that’s branding, isn’t it? People would say “I’m playing Critical Role tonight!” and folks would know what that means. Building a brand is hard, but if anybody in the TRPG space, CR would have the best shot at it.

Sure. New ventures entail risk. An RPG rulebook isn’t *that* much of a risk, though. Especially if it was a Kickstarter stretch goal. Much easier to produce than an animated show!

So, given two facts: 1) WotC indicated last year that streaming shows like Critical Role are responsible for over 50% of new player acquisitions; http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?4677-Over-Half-Of-New-D-D-Players-Got-Into-Game-From-Watching-Online-Play&p=7280374 2) Critical Role is currently demonstrating an ability to run a multi-million dollar Kickstarter in a small RPG industry...

I think it’s interesting that, give the sheer size of CR fandom, they could possibly consider launching their own Critical Role RPG which could rival D&D. Even if it didn’t, it would probably be the second biggest RPG in the world.

The campaign guide for 5e War of the Burning Sky should be coming out within a week or two. It contains a warfare supplement that Morrus created for the 3.5 version. The encounters are set around specific tasks the PCs can complete that influence the battle as a whole such as taking a strategic point, assassinating a high-level enemy official, defending against an enemy surge, etc.

I had to create all the Elena player Characters and Monsters, but it was pretty easy. End result they loved it. Morrus, if there is a place to put Fan made materials for No Thank You Evil! please let me know or I can create a section and upload what I have already created.

  • 05:55 AM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post A 308-Page Paperback WOIN Core Rulebook For Under $10!
Can someone tell me what all these acronyms stand for Truthfully, I only know some of them. WOIN stands for “What’s OLD is NEW,” which is a lovely pun used as the general name for the generic system that Morrus designed. OLD is the fantasy incarnation of WOIN, NEW is the sci-fi version, and NOW is the modern/contemporary equivalent. Despite OLD, NEW, and NOW being structured like acronyms, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an official statement on what they stand for, and any guesses I might have would just be pure conjecture on my part.

The new Facebook/Twitter/Print/etc. buttons that won't stay hidden are quite annoying! They cover the text of the article. After hiding them, as soon as I scroll the article they unhide. Very much agreed! @Morrus. just a clarification, Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are not the same brand. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it would be beneficial for newcomers to either IP to not become confused.

  • 05:39 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Here Are Your Official Top 10 Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2018
Morrus: Legend of the Five Rings 5th Edition won't use the classical Roll and Keep dice (d10s) pool system of the previous four editions, but a modified Roll and Keep with proprietary, narrative dice (with 6 or 12 sides), similar - but not identical - to those introduced by Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition and then employed in the various Star Wars RPGs by Fantasy Flight Games (and now in their Genesys "universal" system).

  • 12:41 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Taking Nominees for Most Anticipated RPG of 2018
Morrus: Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne, is not out yet, not even for the backers, as far as I can tell. Delta Green has the Handler's Guide out in PDF. City of Mist has the Starter Set out in both psysical and PDF form and the Core Rulebook out in PDF. Correct about World of Lazarus being a setting for Modern AGE. Sentinel Comics RPG has only the starter set out. The rulebook is due out in 2018. Don't know if it counts. Regarding the Flash Gordon RPG for Savage Worlds: it's not a fully-independent game, but it needs the Savage Worlds rules which aren't included in neither of the books, so it shouldn't count for the purpose of this poll (unless for some reason this rule doesn't apply to SW products... in fact, Savage Rifts made the top of the poll two years ago and it wasn't an independent ruleset too).

  • 12:47 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post Nathan Stewart Promises WotC will do something with new settings in 2018
And the whole point of going OGL was so that other companies could put out new campaign settings so that they didn't have to. Morrus even has a thread on the boards here that lists all the various campaign settings that have already been made for 5E. If you can't find something there you're looking for... then it's pretty much guaranteed that your desire and want is so narrow that WotC sure isn't going to scratch your itch, even if they *do* eventually produce a completely new setting at some point. That's just simply odds.

  • 11:36 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post The New D&D Book Is Called "Ghosts of Saltmarsh" [UPDATED!]
Oh? How did it fit into Dragonlance? The inn proper, which was weak and bizarre as a framing device, only had the Green Dragon In in Greyhawk as an alternative location. When you get to the actual Adventures, none of which involve the Yawning Portal in anyway, that changes. On page 9, for "The Sunless Citadel": "On Krynn, the citadel was once part of Xak Tsaroth, and it harbored worshippers of Takhisis. When that city was destroyed during the cataclysm, it fell into a right that opened in the earth. In this setting, consider replacing the kobolds in the adventure with gully dwarves." On page 33, for "The Forge of Fury": "On Krynn, Khundrukar can be placed anywhere in the Kharolis Mountains. An independent stronghold that has no direct tunnels connecting to Thorbardin, it was overrun by attackers during the Age of Might. During the Age of Despair, it was seized by Highlord Verminaard's forces. Consider replacing the orcs in the adventure with hobgoblins and the duergsr with Theiwar dw...

  • 09:24 PM - robus quoted Morrus in post Critical Role Goes Independent From Thursday
I find podcast versions to be a great way to listen to AP shows. You can listen to them while doing other things (walking, driving, etc.) rather than having to carve out 4 hours of time. Yep - that's the way I do it too. Just listen to it in the background while I work and if I miss something hilarious or surprising I just rewind a bit. You don't have to follow every moment. Of course that's not for everyone, but it's a fun escape and makes a nice change from listening to music.

  • 09:50 PM - Ilbranteloth quoted Morrus in post Decapitation and lethality in your game
When a player kills a foe, I often ask “how do you kill it?” and let them describe the killing blow however they like. Decapitation doesn’t come up as often as you’d think! Thats similar to what we do. On a critical hit, they choose the hit location which has an impact on the potential outcomes. On a critical miss, they decide what the impact is, which should be at least as bad as provoking an opportunity attack, although it doesn’t have to result in damage. When they suffer an injury, or a possible killing blow, they decide what happens as well. We have guidelines and rules to help, so if they want to just go with the dice, they can.
  • 05:54 PM - D351 quoted Morrus in post No Politics
I think it’s quite simple. Opposition of harassment and abuse in our little community is not politics, and I oppose any attempts to paint them as such. I was going for a more broadly applicable philosophy, but I'll take it. It certainly meets the needs of addressing this most recent issue in most details. Is it fair to extrapolate that to an understanding that it is not "politics" to discuss how the community should best create and maintain an environment safe from harassment and abuse? Part of the reason I brought this question up is that it seems that it would be difficult to have that kind of conversation without directly shutting down those who attempt to derail the subject into politics (or into calling the subject politics) before the thread has been derailed. In the recent example, the fact that the thread was closed left me with the incorrect impression that the subject itself had been the problem (in that it lent itself to attracting that kind of attention). I'm glad to see that ...

EN World (and I) are not connected to the ENnies any more, and I don't have any insight into what they'll decide. I do know they announced that something was forthcoming. I hope that announcement is sooner than later.

  • 03:26 PM - Deset Gled quoted Morrus in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
It was good, but wasn't the last episode a romance plot? And this one was essentially two simultaneous romance plots (with a murder mystery added in). I'm hoping for some action next week! I think the "upgrade the ship" side plot and accompanying test fight was their attempt to shoehorn some action into what was otherwise a relationship episode. I also think it worked. I've been surprisingly satisfied with these romance plots. I generally disliked Riker romance on TNG, but these have been working for me. Hopefully they won't get stale.

  • 10:11 PM - Blue quoted Morrus in post Clear reputation comment from Notifications
There's a thread on this just 6 threads below this one. http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?653829-Non-existent-Reputation-comment That one was so recent because I commented on it 5 days before when this started. But that was confirming I had the same error as others, and giving the time/date in case it was useful for tracking down why the disabled reputation comment system was activating. I did mention removal, but it was an old thread. This thread is focused on asking if there was any way to reset it for me and the others suffering from it, even if it's an admin running a SQL statement to clear them out of the database to give temporary relief. After 5 days I fidn it to be a real distraction, triggering years of "I've got a response!" habit.

There was a conflict? I didn’t even release there *was* a conflict or that there was any fault to assign. It’s certainly one of the strangest conversations I’ve had recently! Ah well! There could have been a conflict if I had decided "Morrus is ignoring us rabble rabble". Instead it was just miscommunication.

  • 05:01 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted Morrus in post Ravenloft & Mad Mages: New Endless Quest Books From Matt Forbeck
“If you decide that trying to steal Halaster’s spellbook is madness, and just go have a drink at the Elfstone Tavern turn to page 44.” But seriously, these both sound pretty awesome. Something about Escape from Castle Ravenloft really reminds me of the old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80s. Y ou have been tasked with stealing the spell book of Halaster Blackcloak, the mad mage who controls the halls of Undermountain.
  • 04:53 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted Morrus in post Decapitation and lethality in your game
Same and same. Unless decapitation and maiming is baked into the system, I don't feel a need to add it in. If it comes up in my D&D game, it's telegraphed in advance as a specific consequence. And generally, if someone loses a limb, that's a story opportunity to get a cool prosthetic of some sort, rather than a punishment. When a player kills a foe, I often ask “how do you kill it?” and let them describe the killing blow however they like. Decapitation doesn’t come up as often as you’d think!
  • 01:16 PM - quoted Morrus in post Artificer UA to be released in February
*Please* just give it a rest. This crusade of yours is starting to make this forum less pleasant for other. it is a honor being 'invited' to shut up by the boss here, and a very unpleasant thing. anyway, I did not realise being so important to spoil the forum experience for someone here. anyway, I will not talk anymore about that, for what I care other people can freely continue to believe that the only perfect beings on earth are wotc employees. me, regardless of your censorship (or maybe more because of it), will still continue considering them fallible humans, with their work influenced by luck, emotive random choices, not-so-good plans and all other factors which normally influence the lives of normal humand like we, and they, are.
  • 12:44 AM - TwoSix quoted Morrus in post Who's Multiclassing With Who? More D&D Beyond Stats!
Fighter/Rogue is the most popular combo, followed by Barbarian/Fighter. Warlock/Bard is the least popular. That's not quite accurate...Warlock/Bard is the least common option on that chart, but that chart is only showing the 10 most popular combinations. Since there are 66 possible combinations of 2 PHB classes, that means Warlock/Bard is 10th out of 66, a fairly popular combination! (Considering Warlock/bard is a pretty optimal multiclass combination, that isn't too surprising.) This one is the fighter. Very popular for multiclassers, with 33% of characters, and nearly 40% at level 20. Warlock, paladin and... fighter? are popular multiclasses. Looks like it should be sorcerer in that chart instead of fighter; the same error exists on both the rogue and the wizard chart.
