In the Battletech and Mechwarrior universe, someone did calculations and figured out that mechs as drawn are actually less dense than water. My headcanon for ZEITGEIST is that Borne's made of adamantine that was magically alloyed with other metals, sort of like how adding a bit of carbon to iron makes steel. Without magic he'd collapse, but he's so suffused with magic he's impossible to dispel.

Define "good". For example, if I am having one PC face off agianst one NPC, anything particularly complicated, or that will take up a whole lot of time focusing on how many vodka shots one player makes while the others sit on their hands waiting for their compatriot to become staggeringly drunk would not be "good". We wouldn't want to make one person the focus of the action for an entire...

That's okay. Understanding may be achievable. Consider - fights are not the only thing in a D&D game. If a player (or group of players) is really interested in some aspect of the game other than fights, then maybe having the fights be deadly is not leading the players to their fun very well.

That is phenomenal to hear. I love that there were almost equal numbers of male and female interested - it really is a different world for RPGs these days, for the better. The DMing is likely to be your biggest problem, it always is -- more Marines than Master Chiefs. :)

In the same vein, I have been eyeing a number of the Artificer class takes to bundle with the Eberron stuff - All the ratings for them are pretty much the same, and I'm hard pressed to buy...

I often think it's too easy to get into the TARDIS. A TARDIS is supposed to be the most advanced type of ship in the universe, so teleporting onto it shouldn't be easy. I wonder if she gave Kerblam! permissions or something?

Um, pemerton? You don't get to say what the OP meant. Really, deciding that the OP should follow *your* use of the terms is a bit on-the-nose ironic in a thread largely *about questioning definitions*. Please, if his form does not seem coherent, rather than tell him he is wrong, ask questions probing where your differences lie, hm? I think you'll find it far more constructive.

I think it might be more clear to say, a prescriptivist thinks we have rules for language that we must follow. A descriptivist feels the rules describe the language as it currently is[, and that as use changes, the rules will change. There is a better view, IMHO. Right now, short term, if you want to be understood, you should follow the rules. Long term, it is empirically shown that...

Not necessarily, no. Specifically, there are games where you do not take on a role of one of the characters and all players have sway over all characters within the narrative. This would not be a role-playing game, but would be a story-telling game. You see, this is a problem with making definitions - you need to consider the *entire space* within which you are making your definition. ...

Great list! I agree with you on Forgetful and Spendthrift. You can use skills with any attribute as long as the GM agrees, so intimidation and Disfigured would be a good combo for a strong character. A STR (intimidation) check with the disfigured trait would be a good combo.

That being said... "the rules are descriptive" is insufficient as a definition. If nothing else, it fails to differentiate role-playing games from story-telling games, which I expect we would find are also descriptive. It probably also fails to differentiate from some forms of simulation games - like SimCity, where within a domain, you are largely allowed to do whatever you darn well feel like....

I think pointing out that there are some actions that are not allowed is missing the point. Yes, my character doesn't have the wings, spells, or magic items that allow them to fly, so they cannot fly. That doesn't make the game suddenly 100% prescriptive. I think the central point is still there - if you are playing chess, you have a list of allowed moves, and *everything else* is...

To me it comes down to presentation. If the party goes into an area that is known to be fraught with heinous, over the top peril, than I would expect no surprise when said peril occurs. But I would't throw such a threat if they were just doing a diplomatic mission for example, as the peril would feel more arbitrary to me at that point.

The key to the Solar is its 150 ft flying speed. Effectively unless you have a means of immobilizing it, it can kite indefinitely, or it can just teleport back 120 feet if necessary. So for an Empryean vs a Solar it comes down to Bolt vs Slaying Longbow. Overall, bolt has a +3 attack advantage (+2, and the Solar's AC is 1 lower) and gets to attack twice through the legendary action. Slaying...

I will disagree to a point here. Again, we are talking about a creature that is supposed to be extremely difficult, maybe nigh impossible for a party to defeat. This to me is the equivalent of a party asking for a god's personal password and wondering why the knowledge check DC is outside of their possible values. Further, an "impossible" roll does serve a few functions. One, it lets other...

As I said, watch surrogates. Also, if you don't want this stuff in your game, just disallow it. Come up with a reason. Pemberton has secret knowledge that they don't manage to replicate during the span of the campaign. Like, we figured out how to make nukes 70 years ago, but some folks still have a hard time doing it. It's okay if the PCs can't do everything.

Yeah I will say the Party can easily get tpked on this one. The bite will take one pc mostly out of combat, and the poison has a good chance of dropping a pc outright (possibly killing if they are already really wounded). Between the two attacks, you should expect to have a pc drop out of the combat each round.

So if you have a Kickstarter for a new D&D 5E book, you may put it in the 5E forum instead (that's instead, not as-well-as). If the forums end up being...

Agreed. I feel like it should be several adventures worth of planning and prep to be able to go toe to toe with such a creature. If your facing something 10 CR higher than you, you should get curb stomped in most cases.

Yeah, what got me thinking about it is, "what's the difference between, 'never understood what you are saying,' and 'never heard you say it in the first place?' " Recognition of the command sounds like it's key to the magic of the spell.

Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

RAW: Sounds like it wouldn't matter. They are affected by the Geas, they take the damage. RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Now now Taran, you started this tangent by noting frustration with DMs who ignore dodging and spells like sanctuary. Overlord is basically saying turnaround is fair play, that as much as DMs may use in game knowledge to make their monsters more tactical, players can do it too.

I don't know if this is in similar vein or not, but I used to play with a guy who for some reason, consciously or not, decided to "one-up" every PC I played by playing a PC with the same party role, but with lots of rules-tweaking to make the PC better. It was kind of obvious after a while: (1) I would create a PC, (2) he would get tired of the PC he was playing and retire them, and (3) a new PC...

Lets say a person was subjected to a GEAS, but then shortly after their memory was modified so they don't remember getting the GEAS effect. Would they have any knowledge or innate way to avoid the actions restricted by the GEAS, or would they just stumble into it and take the damage?

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position. The two examples in a game I can think of were: 1) Our party had to cross a hall in a keep in which...

This is the segment that you are getting confused on. Sanctuary does not generally cause an attack action to be wasted. 1) The monster tries to attack you. 2) It fails its save. 3) It now has the option to attack someone else. Only if it can't (or won't) is its attack action wasted. So unless the monster used all of its movement to get to you, and has no other targets, it is free by the...

  • 01:38 AM - Jester David mentioned Morrus in post D&D 5e nearing 800,000 copies sold?
I was under the impression that AD&D numbers in the heyday of the 80's rpg craze were in the low millions, but maybe that was over the whole life of 1e. Or maybe, I'm just pulling those numbers out of my hat. As Morrus says, it was very possibly in that range. But TSR was notoriously bad with its figures, and so it's hard to say. Very likely it's still below the peak of 1984, but it's close enough that in a year or two it could pass 1e...

Morrus, does Trailseeker include the compilations of the ZEITGEIST adventures? I never thought to check since I wasn't handling that subscription. But sadly no, we never had a specific list of changes between individual adventures and the hardcovers. Most of the changes were minor, and none happen after adventure 6, I think.

  • 01:27 PM - Kryx mentioned Morrus in post D&D Promises to Make the Game More Queer
It's not a double standard, because you are comparing two different things. The reverse of "I'm gay and you must accept me" is not "I'm anti-gay and you must accept me", it's "I'm straight and you must accept me". And guess what? People do accept straight people! There are no anti-straight marches. "I object to your existence" is not the equivalent to "I exist", and the two should never be compared to each other. I really admire your stance on this issue. It's great to see a community leader take such a stance. This hobby, like the world as a whole, has no room for homophobia. While many in this thread will claim "Oh, I'm not homophobic" we've all seen their words that dance around the issue, but we know what is truly meant. Thanks again for standing up against hate Morrus.

Morrus : As somebody who sings with the local LGBTQ chorus (as an ally--I don't want to claim my collaborators' experiences as my own), who has played D&D with at least four LGBTQ individuals, and who has heard a smattering of the stories of exclusion--people who can't take their spouses to family reunions, others who can only go home for Christmas if they accept being called by the wrong name and the wrong pronouns--I personally thank you for confronting bigotry where you see it and for making enworld an inclusive community.

@Morrus You may want to consider revising your community header and rule statement to close some loopholes in it that technically are allowed by it but which you will be equally as unpleased with.

Morrus I was tracking renown/reputation in our Night Below / Out of the Abyss mashup campaign. Not exactly a resource, but here's an example of what I did with my own adaptation of the Renown rules from the DMG/PHB: Renown (Cairngormís Hollow) Renown 1: PCs get offers of free services, sporadic free room & board, occasional offers of marriage, or small gifts like a few chickens or a goat. Renown 2: PCs get consistent free room & board, preferential treatment by guards who overlook minor infractions, and access to special quests from Lady Nydaridien. (land deed, Calrow Ruins). Renown 3: PCs treated as villagers and brought in on village ritual practices and voting, free modest lifestyle in village, Lady Nydaridien gives free use of horses in livery stables. Renown 4: PCs receive discounts on special purchases, and are afforded the same level of respect as village elders and Lady Nydaridien herself, gain access to dryad Wyraís spellcasting service and special downtime activity involving...

So, back to the topic at hand (Sorry Morrus, replied before I saw your post to move on. I was quite ... put out about the comment I quoted and posted on to read all the replies before replying myself.). I do agree with the previous comment that I don't see how this helps build community. It might help give confidence to new people as to how to find good content, but I'm still not sure about that. IMO, good reviews and ratings, and perhaps a few trustworthy bloggers doing detailed reviews might actually help much more than this. But, at least it's something. Kudos to WotC to adapting and trying new things. They've been doing much more of this (trying new things) since the inception of 5E, and the pace is only quickening.

  • 05:00 PM - Ath-kethin mentioned Morrus in post How long have you been gaming?
My starting point was the tabletop boardgame HeroQuest, back in 1990 or '91. Then my mom bought me a copy of ICE's Middle Earth Roleplaying Game around '92 and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. In '93 my friend bought a copy of Earthdawn, and from that point I was hooked. A year and a half later I was introduced to D&D (or more specifically, AD&D 2nd Edition) and that was that. @Morrus: I've been teaching my 3-1/2 year old the basics, moving in through the old D&D cartoon and the new Tales of Equestria game (and HeroQuest), so newbies exist. It will just be a while until he can spell well enough to join ENWorld.

Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make @Morrus a Metron? @Morrus is an Organian, for sure. As for virtual gunpowder, you might want to try remodulating the transmogrifiers that govern the recplicator database. Or remove the field dampers on an EMH emitter and beam the stuff out of the holodeck. Both of those have worked for me in the past.
  • 08:55 PM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post Star Trek Adventures: Now that the full rules are out, what do you think?
Okay, everyone - here's what to do. Make sure your speakers are on and open this link in another tab. Go ahead. It's nothing creepy and it's safe for work. Once you've got that going - do it! - come back here. Cool. You're back. Now imagine the scene, folks: oneshot and aramis erak on Cestus III, squaring off against one another as the Metrons look on...or, in this case, as the rest of us watch them spar over dice mechanics. I'll bring the pink and green space marshmallows (ala' the buffet in Journey to Babel) and we'll see who wins the dice mechanic stats championship grudge match. Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make Morrus a Metron?

Thursday, 22nd June, 2017

  • 05:43 AM - Flips mentioned Morrus in post Combat Questions
Thank you all with your replies. We just thought that a mirror match would give us a "balanced" fight between two sets of combatants. I guess you are right, I had thought that Selena was more of a blaster than she really is, and seeing the retooled version give a good example of how a more "blaster" focused character would look. Although I agree with IvyMike about the adage, damage is one way that people tend to compare magical power. Morrus: I know it isn't trying to be D&D, but I know that this system is meant to be quite flexible to be able to work in many different settings. If we were trying to more accurately replace the higher magic setting, other than increasing the MP slightly, do you have any suggestions about how to rescale the damage progression? Thanks again so much. Everyone's answers have been very helpful.

Y'know, I think there might be, but I can't think offhand how. I know that sometimes when I edit a post I see the raw become and sometimes I don't. I can't think what I do different though. Thanks. There are 3 different editors bundled with the forums, I'll try the other two in case one of them supports it. The WYSIWYG will sometimes flash the raw code before converting it. Maybe the text editor leaves it in view.

  • 08:57 AM - Jhaelen quoted Morrus in post Problem granting XP
You'll need to be a bit more specific about "unable to grant XP"? My initial guess is you're sitting too far away from your computer. If you move closer, you will be able to reach the mouse and grant XP. But that's just an initial guess based on the limited information available! :) tl;dr -- what exactly is the issue you're experiencing?Dear Morrus, I'm a member of ENWorld for almost 12 years now and have been posting over 7700 posts, as is readily apparent by checking the information at the top right of each of my posts. If your 'initial guess' is supposed to be funny, you failed abominably. In fact I consider it quite insulting. If, instead of posting a flippant reply you'd spent a few seconds checking the facts, you might have found that the last time I've been able to grant xp was on August 31st. I've received over 1000xp and very likely granted a lot more than that to other ENWorld members in all these years. Perhaps that indicates I'm aware how the process works?
  • 08:41 AM - Jhaelen quoted Morrus in post All that streaming
Generally speaking most stuff shows up on Netflix or a Sky channel. Often the next day, though some stuff (Iím looking at you, The Expanse season 2!) still hasnít shown up for some reason. Here in Germany, The Expanse Season 2 is already available on Netflix. I finally broke down and started to sub Netflix last weekend. My biggest problem is lacking time, so it's difficult for me to turn a subscription into a worthwhile investment. I also consider the offerings available in Germany's free TV to be quite good. They may be about 2 years behind, but if you have the patience, they'll eventually broadcast most of the successful shows. Also, specifically on Arte, you'll get to see sleeper hits from all across Europe that aren't available on any of the streaming services.
  • 04:25 AM - trappedslider quoted Morrus in post All that streaming
Most of those (Hulu, CBS, etc.) aren't available here. It all ends up in Netflix over here. We have SkyQ though, and the BBC iPlayer is free. So even stuff like Hulu The Handmaid's tale and Prime's originals show up on netflix after a while over there?

<snip cool WOIN mechanics> Morrus, I gather you still play D&D. I really like your system's base mechanics as you have laid them out. I wonder why you still play D&D? Does D&D do some things better than WOIN? Perhaps it is just a different feel to the game? I play different RPGs too, so this is not intended as a criticism - just genuine curiosity. On a positive note, you may not have sold the OP, but you have sold me.

Each career just gives you 4 attribute points, 2 skill points, 1 exploit. Itís pretty quick. But yeah, youíd need to buy the book to make a character, or use the online character builder. Each consecutive die costs more, yes. Itís an expanding scale. Offhand I canít think of any charts you need during play. Your character sheet has your dice pools right there. Maybe the critical hit chart if youíre using the 1d6 to pick a condition complex version of crits. The status tracks are from an older iteration ó it just uses conditions these days. Hereís the system, basically. Pretty much all you need: 101511 Thanks for the responses, I'll check it out further.

Youíve come to the right place! EN Publishingís own WOIN system is pretty much exactly what you just described! www.woinrpg.com Thanks, but from a brief review, I'm not sure about that, here are some questions/issues: 1. In WOIN, it appears creation is a bit elaborate with the careers/lifepaths, is there not a shortcut (e.g., get X attributes, X skills, build a character?)? Otherwise, it is pretty far from point-buy, which I'm looking, as well as (not previously stated) an ability to mostly make characters without needing the books to reference (a requirement for career systems like this and Conan 2d20) and quick entry into playing the game (e.g., like Star Wars D6 or Savage Worlds). 2. In WOIN, there appear to be dead stats (at least to some degree), as Ability/Skill values of 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, etc. appear valueless (since a 1 gets 1D6, 3 gets 2d6, 6 gets 3d6, etc.). 3. WOIN in general appears to have too much chart consulting, etc., being a bit overly complicated with all the v...

Asking for a friend... One way to do it is the same way the DM plays hyper-intelligent monsters and NPCs: you meta-game and let player knowledge bleed - carefully - into character knowledge. It's important to have the cooperation and consent of the DM and other players, of course. And the DM needs to keep tight control. It works the other way too, playing a character significantly less intelligent than you.

Maybe they're very shy, Or in prison. Or blind. Or allergic to electronic devices. Or speak 12 languages but not English. Or busy saving the world. Or have tentacles instead of arms. I'm not sure tentacles would be much of an impediment for asking. I only use two fingers when typing (well 3, but I could get by with 2).
  • 02:31 PM - Kobold Boots quoted Morrus in post How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are?
Asking for a friend... Smart is something you do, not something you are. This is true in life as well as gaming. Exhibiting caution so you can think about something before you do it is a trait of "smart people", same with what is often called common sense. If you're talking about having more knowledge, it's a function of delaying tactics such as "let me look this up" or "I remember this story about X, let me see if I can find it or remember it." There's also a few tells regarding intellectual speed. Higher IQ (not necessarily smart) people are generally good with kibitz and word play and see connections where others see coincidence. So playing the character really has more to do with what people perceive as the illusion of "smart" and doing "smart" things, not necessarily being the highest IQ in the land. One does not guarantee the other and some of the folks with the highest intellectual capacity lack the ability to be "smart" in reality. 2c KB

How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are? Asking for a friend... Wow... this friend of your is so lacking in intelligence that they couldn't even formulate the words needed to ask the question themselves, they had to have you do it for them, Morrus? ;) You know, at some point I guess they really need to cut their losses... ;)

How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are? I can't, Int is capped at 20 for PCs.... Serious answer: focus on their a brilliant memory and mathematical skills. They don't have to have any tactical acumen.

It's a different environment. Back then there were tons of news and rumours about the upcoming game to collate. In the run-up to 4E, 5E, Pathfinder 2, I did the same, and I'm sure I will for 6E if/when it ever happens. But in the middle of an edition's cycle, especially one with far fewer releases, there's just less news to talk about. At least in terms of official 5E product releases. Even so, I've scooped plenty of them ahead of time over the last few years. As for fastest - well, I updated it daily then, much like I do now, except these days we have additional columnists adding info about a wider range of games too. I'm very content with how Enworld operates. My comment was more aimed at noticing how forums have shifted to discussion and redditt/twitter are the FLASH news system. Plus as you note, the environment has certainly changed from then to now. Anyone remember dialing into their local/topical bbs system?
