Um, no. I was responding directly to what DM Mike said. In the first bit we are agreeing (and I am merely elucidating with an example). In the second, I am directly responding to how he says he plays. So, really, you are 100% dead wrong - I am having a discussion with someone that seems to me 100% grounded in our play experiences. Please don't come to me 100% dead wrong, proclaiming...

None tried it - we took it that this was a religious stricture, and doing so was roughly equivalent to a Paladin violating their alignment/code restrictions - they'd lose their powers, and have to find a way to atone. I think we assumed that clerics and druids who fell became fighters with d8s for hit points, which kinda sucked, so nobody risked it. One exception was made: Old-style bards,...

Yah. If a 15 year old city kid decides to play a ranger, you shouldn't expect the *player* to know proper approaches to how to acquire food or shelter, or follow tracks. The game very explicitly works to help you play characters who know and do things you, the player, cannot. Expecting player understanding of the character's domains of knowledge is not fair. People are so......

You would replace stupid vitriolic edition wars with a similar screed against the entire line as a whole? That is not an improvement. We get it. You don't like WoD. That's been made abundantly clear. Now what? Having gotten that across... what's the goal? What do you want to get out of this thread?

In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

It isn't like this is a modern forensics game, where the PC can choose to take pictures of image processing, or take samples to the lab for analysis for approaches. Nor are players likely to be forensic scientists, or even people who actually have the skills in question, that would be able to name approaches would actually be fruitful. This is, honestly, a major problem with the "goal and...

Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

That pretty much my plan. I also agree with this - it solved a lot of my players problems when I realized climbing mostly didn't require rolls unless its particularly dangerous. This is true, but thieves need to be able to climb walls!

There's this large swath of territory between, "this has no impact" and "the game depends on". Maybe we can consider what happens in that in-between, rather than driving to extreme strawmen used to assign "failure" to a GM, hey what?

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

You spend a long post complaining about how WoD is fixed in one particular version of the supernatural, and then when someone points out that one corner of it isn't like that... that it can manage many different kinds of supernatural, you say it doesn't fit your fairly narrow image of what these supernatural people should be! But I don't think you need to telegraph that an enemy has a well-considered escape plan, which doesn't harm the PCs. An escaped villain is one...

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

When writing ZEITGEIST: The Gears of Revolution, there are many urban adventures, but the 'gating' was more information based. You didn't know you had a reason to go certain places until you accomplished preliminary investigations. You can look up and see the spooky mountain in the middle of the city from the get-go, but you don't know what you need to do up there until you follow a few leads...

I don't think there's anything fundamental, here - I'm talking more about categorizing, and setting expectations. I just think about it, and realize there are parts of play where the GM is acting more like a judge/referee, and parts of play where the GM is acting more like an author. The former I'd call adjudication, the latter, not. There's connotations to "adjudication" that I don't think...

I gotta agree with Morrus on the whole CN thing. Thing is, most people, really, are lawful by D&D standards. They follow rules, they work (reasonably well) in groups every day and generally aren't out there to stir things up. Funny thing is, I think most players choose CN because they don't want to allow the DM to have any hooks into their behavior. It's really a shame that 5e ejected "unaligned" because, frankly, I think that's what most folks mean when they say CN. Sorry, but, if your chaotic neutral character is 100% responsible and trustworthy, he's not actually CN.

  • 05:08 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
THAC0 is clearly preferable to BAB, for two reasons. One, it sounds cooler, and closer to the action of hitting. THAC0. It's an aptonym. Second, it is easier. As Morrus has repeatedly explained to the rest of you, addition is easier. With THACO, you are always adding. With BAB, you have to constantly subtract negative numbers. So NOT ONLY do you have to use subtraction (OH NOES!), you ALSO have to subtract negative numbers. I swear, if I ever have to subtract the negative of the proficiency again .... Stop bowing to the tyranny of math.

Alright, it's officail, set for November: "Baldur's Gate III is among the list of over 30 games currently confirmed to be available day one on Google Stadia. That list--which can be viewed below--may change as we approach Stadia's November 2019 release date." https://www.gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-announced-for-google-stadia/1100-6467362/ Morrus unsure if this is relevant to the news for the site, but there it is.

Any ETA on when this will be fixed?...I don't want to be seen as blatantly abusing anything. Is there alternative method I can use to report posts in the mean time? No timetable as yet, AFAIK. Perhaps Morrus could make a glitch announcement and ask that reports be PMed to The Mod Squad?* https://www.memorabletv.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/the-mod-squad.jpg Or, for those unconcerned with anonymous reporting, posting it in Meta? * not pictured: any actual ENWorld Mods.

Morrus Umbran darjr I think I may have discovered the trigger for the posts disappearing: every one I know of that got blacked out was reported.
  • 07:44 AM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned Morrus in post Completely Blank Posts?
Morrus Umbran darjr As I noted above, I’ve personally encountered two blacked out posts by spammers (whom I subsequently banned). The text wasn’t merely color matched to the back, because the reported text didn’t show even when I quoted it to check. What had been there was simply gone. Something odd is going on.

  • 04:58 AM - Maxperson mentioned Morrus in post Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?
That they are dancing is more about content than description. The thing that makes the scene more interesting is that the kobolds are dancing for some reason, not how the GM describes the dance It's not, or at least it's not entirely content. Dancing is a description of what the kobolds are doing up on the hill. Dancing is also content. This brings me back(again) to the point I made pages ago. Both qualitative description AND content are both necessary to make an interesting scene. One without the other is going to be dull. Also not sure why my posts keep including that quote I think it has something to do with multiquoting. Zardnaar was driving Morrus crazy with it in a thread recently. Maybe one of them could help you figure out how to stop quoting it.

Same as Morrus , a close vote. Many fond memories of 2E, but 3E coming along and "modernizing" things we had houseruled for 2E anyway, makes it my favorite. At least at the beginning.

The site lists the dice and miscellany separate from this: The Essentials Kit. So maybe a new revised version of the starter set, but not Eberron specific it seems. Well, the name to me suggests maybe more of a neo-Expert Set: not an intro product, but a second product for folks who bought the Starter Set and want more. Something for folks with no FLGS, who buy their Magic & DnD stuff at Target or whatnot. Morrus more grist for the mill.
  • 05:12 PM - Parmandur mentioned Morrus in post New D&D Adventure Reveal On 17th May at 'The Descent'
So looks like we were spot on with the Adventure book. "Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus" https://www.renaud-bray.com/Livres_Produit.aspx?id=2843417&def=Dungeons+%26+Dragons+Baldur%27s+Gate%3A+Descent+Into+Avernus+Hardcover+Book+(D%26D+Adventure)%2CCOLLECTIF%2C9780786966769 One correct. 3 more to go. Shout out to Parmandur for being on the Baldurs Gate connection before anyone! Boom! They just kept talking about Baldur's Gate, and getting way too detailed. Interestign that the name pattern matches "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist." Morrus might warrant a new story for your front page.

  • 11:55 AM - Imaculata quoted Morrus in post I think my dentist is ripping me off.
In other news, I have never heard of a dentist who would do a filling without a local anaesthetic. Getting a filling done does not hurt as much as people think. It's not fun, but it beats having to deal with the feeling of a numb jaw long after your visit to the dentist. There's plenty of dentists that will do a filling in the Netherlands without an anaesthetic, but these days they always offer to give you one. I tend to decline. When I grew up none of the dentists gave you one for a simple filling, you just had to endure it.

Zardnaar watched Marathon Man’s torture scene and thought “I can do that!” In other news, I have never heard of a dentist who would do a filling without a local anaesthetic. Haven't seen it stopped using painkillers a few years back. Didn't like the side effects and most pain fades quickly.

Zardnaar watched Marathon Man’s torture scene and thought “I can do that!” In other news, I have never heard of a dentist who would do a filling without a local anaesthetic. The problem was that the doctor did it wrong. He missed with the needle of Novocaine. Numbed part of my face and jaw, but that tooth still had sensation. He ignored me when I tried to tell him I could feel everything and it HURT. He said I was faking it and being dramatic, and when I tried to resist, he had his hygienist physically hold me down while he drilled one of my molars and filled it. He thought because my tongue was numb and I was talking funny from the novocaine having numbed part of my face, that the tooth had to be numb too and I was lying about feeling it all as he drilled in. That was a quarter century ago. Still remember it vividly. It's why, aside from mandatory dental checkups in the Army (where they said they saw no issue requiring treatment, my last one being about a year before I ...
  • 07:50 PM - wingsandsword quoted Morrus in post I think my dentist is ripping me off.
Sounds to me like your insurance is the problem, not the dentist. Remember that healthcare, including dentistry, in the US is almost entirely profit driven. If a dentist can find a way to justify extra visits, at a more expensive billing code, they may very well use them. Rather than 2 visits a year at ~$70 each, billing for 4 visits a year at ~$180 each and telling the patient it's medically necessary (as long as they can find some plausible way to justify that to the insurance company, even if it's not strictly needed) is something many dentists would do here. That way the dentist would be making about 5 times more off me a year than they would with normal, standard 2x/year cleanings that wouldn't cost me anything out-of-pocket from my insurance. That's from his end, that's making $140 off me a year vs. making $720 off me a year. From my end with my current insurance (which costs me about $80/month for dental insurance, which is completely separate from health insurance), ...

  • 03:49 PM - wingsandsword quoted Morrus in post I think my dentist is ripping me off.
IANAD, but periodontal maintenance probably means you have gum disease, which can be halted/held at bay by ongoing maintenance but the damage can't be reversed. Those 20 years without visiting a dentist is probably when that set in. Except every appointment after the first they say I'm fine, have no problems, have no issues ect. I've not heard one bad word about the shape of my teeth or gums since that first appointment. The first couple of appointments they said they were monitoring the status of things since I'd not been to a dentist in so long, but things were looking very good. Hence the extreme skepticism at this idea that I have to come in 4 times a year, for life, for extra expensive cleanings that my insurance won't pay. They aren't even telling me I'm in bad dental health, just that since I had this procedure done once, this is the way it has to be now.

Absolutely. I posit that there is nothing on this earth as funny as The Germans. Or the Dead Parrot sketch. As much as I love the Dead Parrot, I have to give this match to “The Germans”. But even then, I have seen things I thought were funnier than that...for a few minutes. Few are as overall as funny as that episode, though, and 4 of them were movies.

Can't argue there. They're both capable of being witty and laugh-so-hard-you-cry funny. "The Germans" is possibly the funniest television episode in existence. Blackadder is second only to Fawlty Towers. There is literally nothing even close to being as funny as those two things.
  • 08:19 PM - Dannyalcatraz quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
Blackadder is second only to Fawlty Towers. There is literally nothing even close to being as funny as those two things. I might flip those, but I loved both. They’d both be in my top BritCom list, but they wouldn’t be in the top 2 slots. Monte Python is my #1, for many reasons- it was my gateway drug into British comedy, for instance. Saw The Holy Grail on one of its first US broadcastings, before I found D&D.
  • 05:48 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
None of them are any Blackadder. Rowan Atkison is brilliant... but I can only take him in small doses before his style begins to wear on me. I definitely get more full-on guffaws and "hit the pause button because I am laughing too hard to pay attention to the show" from these latter programs, I'm afraid. But then again, I'm not British. And sure as heck comedy is context-dependent. I probably don't have the cultural referents to really *get* Blackadder.

  • 11:36 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
I understand that some people feel that way about the show. I don't share that feeling, though. To loop back, Morrus, you asked, "Why shouldn’t geeks be in the same mainstream sitcoms as everybody else?" So, now we see some reasons. You haven't been subjected to geek-shaming, so no, you wouldn't share the feeling. Shows that lean too hard on sexist or racist tropes are understood to be problematic by folks who are not usually subject to racism or sexism. This show, which leaned on other traditionally negative tropes for its jokes... should also be understood as problematic, no? Maybe not as egregious, but still an issue.
  • 11:33 PM - Henry quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
No. I was definitely a geek, and hung around with my geek friends, but there was no bullying. I get that other people have different experiences. For me, quite a lot actually, until about my senior year in high school. My defense was making friends with other kids who the bullies were scared of. :) In particular, one dude’s homophobic slur was his favorite word to use against me and basically anyone he didn’t like. Don’t know if he ever actually used it against a gay person or not, but my liking D&D and being good at my classes were all the excuse he needed every time he threatened to beat me up. Now, 20-odd years later I have a lot of perspective and see it for the childishness it was - in comparison, nerd-jokes and insults are pretty mild compared to people in this world with real problems.
