I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

One town, a few details about the kingdom, the immediate threat the party needs to worry about. Then over time, add in your big bad, your bigger worldbuilding, those little nuances. And if a player asks you a world question thst you are just not ready to answer...then tell them “I’ll get the...

Okay, there's a fundamental logical issue here. You spend a long post complaining about how WoD is fixed in one particular version of the supernatural, and then when someone points out that one corner of it isn't like that... that it can manage many different kinds of supernatural, you say it doesn't fit your fairly narrow image of what these supernatural people should be! Pick a complaint...

The mage helping the bandit captain escape *is* the hint about what they are dealing with. You may want to telegraph offensive capabilities that are beyond level appropriate - save-or-die, or "this is a huge ancient dragon, not some punk hatchling". But I don't think you need to telegraph that an enemy has a well-considered escape plan, which doesn't harm the PCs. An escaped villain is one...

The main thing I miss from nine swords were stances. The idea of giving fighters a few at will “powers” that they could switch between freely was a simple and wonderful concept. And you can tailor it from the most non-magical “pure martial” abilities to “effectively giving them them a magic power” or everywhere in between

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

If you want a bit of retro-future - what the past thought future technology would be like, go with 2nd. If you want a game that does a nod to understanding wireless technology, go with 5th, but be ready for people to be so paranoid that they won't use the technology in question,...

Well, families are still a thing, right? So, the Fantastic Four still works, today. The problem with FF movies has not been that "they don't work". It has been that Fox does not, at its core, understand superheroes, at least of the Marvel variety. They have fundamentally missed what is most important to the superhero properties they touch. For the Fantastic Four, that is about family. ...

The big stuff: 1) 20 con, so more hp, on top of more hp! 2) Slightly higher crit modifier 3) +2 more attack, and one extra attack every round. 4) The big one....heals 10 damage every round once at half. That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, I’m barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when I’m healed, it’s a...

I don't think there's anything fundamental, here - I'm talking more about categorizing, and setting expectations. I just think about it, and realize there are parts of play where the GM is acting more like a judge/referee, and parts of play where the GM is acting more like an author. The former I'd call adjudication, the latter, not. There's connotations to "adjudication" that I don't think...

I rather think that depends upon what the focus & intent of the game is. Just this weekend, I played a game which had no combat mechanic. GMs are capable of just saying, "Yes, this social interaction plays out in this manner, with these effects," and do so fairly, but they are somehow incapable of doing so with combat? No, that’s the opposite of what I just said. :) It literally just does what it says in that paragraph — to benefit from higher quality equipment, you need an appropriate skill. You can’t benefit from an exceptional quality pistol without enough ranks in pistols. Same with armour.

It's used exactly the way you quoted, from page 23. Lets you benefit from higher quality armour.

You roll the damage as normal and divide by two. There's no stun charge limit.

See Burst attacks on page 99. Area attacks use a single attack roll (in this case AGI (throwing) or similar) vs VITAL DEFENSE of all targets, and a single damage roll. Otherwise it is resolved just like any other attack roll.

I just something similar. I didn't change the damage, but allowed the blade to gain any benefits of the blast. So invocations that give knockback for example, could be used. The invocation that adds your charisma mod would apply, etc.

Morrus: that is fantastic. Thanks. One last thing (I hope), are there any rules about grappling or is it just multiple str/agi vs. str/agi checks?

Thank you all with your replies. We just thought that a mirror match would give us a "balanced" fight between two sets of combatants. I guess you are right, I had thought that Selena was more of a blaster than she really is, and seeing the retooled version give a good example of how a more "blaster" focused character would look. Although I agree with IvyMike about the adage, damage is one way that people tend to compare magical power. Morrus: I know it isn't trying to be D&D, but I know that this system is meant to be quite flexible to be able to work in many different settings. If we were trying to more accurately replace the higher magic setting, other than increasing the MP slightly, do you have any suggestions about how to rescale the damage progression? Thanks again so much. Everyone's answers have been very helpful.

  • 10:44 AM - Lanefan mentioned Morrus in post How to use a WIKI THREAD
For Morrus or anyone who deals with such things: In case it matters, it seems that editing the initial post in a wiki thread does not bounce the thread to the top of the thread list (by timestamp order) the same way adding a new post does. The risk here is that some wiki threads that may be often edited and-or referred to but not often posted to (e.g. the Convention List wiki in general RPG discussion) risk falling off the first page - and thus being forgotten or missed by casual or infrequent visitors - unless they are stickied. • 04:12 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post What system would you use for gritty fantasy?
Morrus, have you checked out ZWEIHANDER Grim & Perilous RPG yet? It ticks off all of the major themes of a grim, gritty game. It even has a 35 page morally grey adventure in the core book, if you want something that can be ran quickly without a lot of preparation required. Dang. He beat me to it. I'd recommend Modos 2, which I'm trying to get into the ENWorld downloads section this month. Because: - Characters are quick to make - about as long as this post. So creation-to-play time is minimized. - Character durability runs in the teens to twenties, while the average two-handed weapon does d10 damage. - PCs have options when they run out of health. Wounds, scars, and disease are among them. So is death. - Light rules and short character sheets mean that the GM doesn't spend a lot of time turning pages, so there's less prep investment in a short campaign. - Each PC has a free-form "flaw," which can make things gritty right off the bat. Notes to Morrus: I'm assuming "gritty" m...

  • 01:39 AM - Mercurius mentioned Morrus in post Mike Mearls “…it’s now obvious how to live without Bonus Actions”' And 6th Edition When Players Ask For It!
I really wouldn't worry about a new edition coming out anytime soon, and I don't think anything's "in the air" (naught Morrus). BUT...while I haven't worked in game design, I imagine that as soon as you publish a new edition, you start a new folder called "Ideas for the Next Edition," and that over three plus years, things start adding up. So if you're Mearls, of course you're thinking about the next edition, at least on the back burner. But there are a lot of steps between here and there, like the alleged Unearthed Arcana book, for one. I could see something like: 2014: 5E core rules 2017/18: first expansion - planes/psionics/odds and ends 2021/22: second expansion - epic play 2024: 50th Anniversary Edition

  • 01:39 AM - LordEntrails mentioned Morrus in post Actions in starship combat for those with no useful skills
It sounds like several of you are trying to disagree with me, but are actually saying something similar to what I'm saying; ... Now, that doesn't mean someone who is an expert in piloting or gunnery couldn't do it better. They would know advanced options or routines that the opposing computer would be using and how to compensate for that, but such would not be required to atleast be moderately effective... Remember, Morrus was basically asking how can PC's feel useful on a starship if they don't have starship skills; What self actions can you think of for characters who have no useful skills in starship combat? They have no engineering or medical or piloting or gunnery or computers or sensors etc. skills -- but you want the player to feel involved ... In short, there is no reason a PC can't do something useful on a starship, they just won't be able to do it as well as an expert. So, from a play perspective, all the characters (assuming the ship have enough systems) can do something interesting. Saying you can't man the laser canon unless you have a gunnery skill, can't work damage control unless you are an engineer, can't pilot the ship etc is a poorly designed system (imo).

So, realllyyy strange issue. I am having trouble with the ENWorld app and well, my identity. I have started getting notifications to my iPad as if I was Morrus. Yah, you read that right. I keep getting multiple "you maxed out your attempts at signing in" notifications to my email address when I should just be signed in to the app and am not attempting to sign in at all. Now I am getting notifications about people liking and quoting my fabulous posts - in threads which I have not posted at all - or even visited. After some investigation, the posts referenced are Morrus'. Then today I went to check out my profile and while my name is at the top, Morrus info comes up. Uhh...... I love my friend and all but he sure does get a lot of notifications!! HELP!!! edit: Apologies for the huge pics!!!! :erm: edit edit: ENW seems fine on my desktop. This is what I get when I click on my own profile link in the app: 84360 This is my front screen on my iPad getting notifications for someone else's posts... 84361

  • 02:29 AM - Quickleaf mentioned Morrus in post Mike Mearls' AMA Summary
Thanks for organizing and recording everything Morrus! I was really interesting by Mike's comments on making a newbie-friendly dungeon crawl balancing structure and flow-of-play. Definitely an area, like initiative, where there's lots of room for experimentation! What is something you have tried putting in the game, but could never find the right mechanics to make it work? I'd love to find a way to manage a dungeon crawl that's very newbie friendly, that provides enough structure to give new DMs the confidence to run the game, but that doesn't become a set of rules that devolves into playing the rules, rather than playing the game. Basically, a framework for the game that gives DMs a little more creative support without replacing the DM's creativity. It's a narrow path to walk. The rules for exploration in 5e are fine, but I think they're too much of a bother for experienced DMs and too mechanistic for newbies to really benefit from them.

  • 04:02 PM - Desh-Rae-Halra mentioned Morrus in post Meet a Professional Game Master
Dragonblade I feel ya.I was bringing extra delicious community snacks in hopes of the DM actually reading the module before we started... Celebrim: $80 per player per session? What exactly does the player get for that? For $80, I better get to sit in a nice new leather recliner, there better be someone working an omelette station that has plenty of bacon, and I players get a handy as a consolation if they fail a saving throw for starters... Seriously, if you are spending 60 hours to run a 4 hour session, something needs to be adjusted. What would the player get for $80 besides you knowing the rules and being prepared? Morrus I disagree. Mercer and Perkins are different in that their players are not paying them to run games, they are running games to promote their channel (Mercer) or a brand (D&D). They are getting paid by others ( to view, to increase sales, etc). I suppose we can say they are Professional Game Masters, but this doesn't seem the same as the dude who is just charging to run a game. They are more like Professional Game Promoters who do so through the DM role.

  • 02:08 PM - Myzzrym quoted Morrus in post What do you think of this Kickstarter page?
No, we don't copy WotC's trade dress. I understand about straight up copying, and that's not what I mean. I prefer when the style remains relatively close to the other books I already own (or marries well together), so there is a certain continuity. Here I really feel like it's completely different and it clashes with the existing official material.
  • 08:56 AM - Caliburn101 quoted Morrus in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
They're grown adults and extremely competent business people. Yes - thinking they are being knee-jerk is foolish. You don't build a successful business without a good dose of business acumen and common sense. However - brands have been known (through in some cases an inability to evolve their business model) to die on their feet by doggedly sticking to 'what worked back in the day'. In fact it is a common enough reason for falling over in business. Blockbuster might still exist if they had seized upon the new paradigm and embraced downloads and streaming. 5th Edition and it's owners have created a system which allows new people in by being penetrable and inclusive, and have nevertheless kept the spirit of D&D robust enough to reconcile many previous version champion groups. That's gold right there, and the reason (alas...) that it eclipses all other systems. Roleplay used to be a lot smaller and system varied - now it has grown into being more inclusive to people but far less s...

So are Jon and Dany headed for conflict? She can be quite murdery about people who challenge her right to rule the world, and he’s now a potential threat to that. I’ve always thought she’s got a bit of Cersei in her. And possibly also a little of her insane father as well. I think there is going to be some trouble. Based on her reaction, her first thought was that Jon poses a threat to her, rather than that she's been sleeping with her nephew after all. Are we assuming the white walkers are not the end game threat, BT just the first half of the season? (Three eps... that won’t be wrapped up next week, surely? Alhugh we know one episode is the biggest battle ever filmed, which I’m guessing is next week). No, it would seem they're not the end game. My guess would be that the survivors from the battle against the white walkers will march on King's Landing to face Cersei, Euron, and the Golden Company. After all, we've yet to see that bit from Bran's vision of a dragon's shadow on King's L...

Just popped in after a few months ... man, this thread. A bunch of people hatewatching a TV show they don't like and making sure everybody knows it. It's the most depressing thing I ever saw. God, why flagellate yourselves like this? For me there are a couple different reasons. One, is that I write a lot of stuff for a Star Trek Adventures fansite (https://continuingmissionsta.com/) and keeping up with Star Trek is part of that voluntary "job", in case I want to stat out new ships or races or technology. Second, I have a compulsive need to "finish" things. I can't start TV series halfway through, and once I've started I need to finish seasons. I can count the number of series I've walked away from and not seen through to cancellation or completion on one hand. Not finishing the season nags at my brain as something undone, like having left the stove on. The final is that I identify as a "Star Trek Fan". I've been a Star Trek Fan since I was eight years old. I've been a Star Trek ...

I'm sure the sheer amount of photography of that building over the last century means no detail will be left undocumented. Copying it will be easy, as long as they can spend the money. That said, isn't it a private building owned by the Catholic Church? They don't need donations or French taxpayer money to rebuild it. They have billions. I've heard it's a little more complicated than the Catholic church owns it. I'm not positive, but from what I've heard... The French Government owns it but allows Catholic Services. They share cooperation between the two in maintaining it. It is very expensive to maintain and thus most of the money to maintain it is via donations rather than simply being from French Taxpayers. Thus, any new constructions and such are normally from donation money and such.

Who? Shorelock Holmes! You know, he had a famous brother named Sherlock that everyone always woos over...but poor Shorelock is always forgotten. Shorelock was the beach dude who was an awesome surfer. If there was a wave, he'd surf it. Unfortunately, he couldn't get further away than 400 meters before he'd have too much temptation and have to catch a big one. He always was stuck somewhere close to the shore. On waves, he'd obviously surf back to shore...and when he wanted to go inland, just missed the surf far too much. He is famous for inventing the quotes... Dude Far Out Spaced Curl And other such famous things. He'd probably be better known along with his side kick Watch Her, but that Sherlock just seemed to get all the media attention back in the day instead of Shorelock.
  • 01:06 AM - Mistwell quoted Morrus in post Is Mike Mearls Happy Hour still a thing?
Sure. Any location - whether big like Twitter or small like here - is just a potential sparking point for a bigger effect. Usually it isn’t, but sometimes something happens, and careers end and brands get damaged. One guy at a company staying quiet for a bit is prudent.l, lest it escalate (which it probably wouldn’t, but it’s not a risk worth taking). I agree. It's what I'd advise him to do - stay quiet.

God, why flagellate yourselves like this?A few months? You posted in this thread five days ago. I personally have no stakes in this thread - I don't watch the show, mostly because I refuse to pay a TV network for "special content" they refuse to air on their regular network (it seems like a bad precedent to set) - but it seems like allowing those who want to vent about this show here in this thread at least keeps it localized. Didn't you build a "positive comments only" thread about the show, specifically to keep the complaints here and not there? So why not let them vent here, where you should be able to safely ignore them? Johnathan

God, why flagellate yourselves like this? Wasn't the whole point of the (+) and (-) thread designations to specifically stop posts like this? Nice personal attack on everyone participating. :-/

You sound nice. Perhaps that came off a bit darker than intended, was just unimpressed by most of the offerings, Tinkerer brings me happy Dragonlance Gnome vibes though.

You may call them terrorists, but that's not what 'terrorist' means to the rest of us. "Terrorism is ... the use of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a means to create terror among masses of people; or fear to achieve a religious or political aim. It is used in this regard primarily to refer to violence during peacetime or in war against non-combatants (mostly civilians and neutral military personnel).' [wikipedia] Terrorists attack civilians in order to provoke terror. Fighting against the military might make them violent activists or secessionists or something, but to be a terrorist you are doing things that the Rebellion definitely does not do. Your personal definition of terrorism is yours, of course, but the common definition of terrorism does not encompass the actions of the Rebels. Might be a bit of a cultural thing. In the US, laws about terrorism are a lot broader. For example, the US Code of Federal Regulations just says "the unlawful use of force and violenc...

One of the issues is the fact that the trees that gave the wood for the roof, made up a whole forest and well that tree AFAIK no longer exist. https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/notre-dame-cathedral-restoration but from a quick look it looks liek the French government owns it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre-Dame_de_Paris#Ownership https://news.ubisoft.com/en-us/article/348227/Supporting-Notre-Dame-de-Paris http://assassinscreed.com/unity-notredame/ I've got to say this is very cool of them. I can't help but wonder if the laser-scanning they did of the building for the game could be used by the restoration effort. https://news.yahoo.com/amer...

Historically, editions have changed with design teams. Whoever makes 6E, it will be the designers coming up after Mearls and Crawford, etc. I dunno, that seems like a hell of a dice to roll? Better to ask the current designers to make the adjustments needed to improve the current rule set? A 5.1e rather than a 6e. Three big improvements I can recommend off the bat: 1) make the starter set more new DM friendly, much more hand holding is needed. 2) reorg the PHB so that how to play the game comes first, not chargen. 3) reorg the DMG so that running the game is first, not bloody world building! :D Oh and some rules tweaks too...

For example, the US Code of Federal Regulations just says "the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives", which the Alliance clearly fits. Australia has also charged people with terrorism for attacking a military base. I think discussing this further may get a little political, so I'll just point out that Wikipedia also says, "There is no universal agreement on the definition of terrorism." In any case, I'm okay not c...
