Early on there were two - DEFENSE, and MENTAL DEFENSE. Then there were three - MELEE, RANGED, and MENTAL, and so it meant MELEE and RANGED. Now there are four, but it still means MELEE and RANGED. It's a little historical remnant which could probably be done away with.

I dunno if we have to worry about it being "paramount" in general. This is not about character advancement, or about classes, or about particular powers, or even a feat. We are talking, honestly, about a very basic setup - getting the drop on the opponent, and being able to attack before they realize you are there. A very basic tactic, used throughout history. The logic being used to...

It's a good question, and something which completely slipped through playtesting! I would, on reflection, say that immunity overrides vulnerability, so you'd end up immune to both.

Um, where I come from, "consequentialism" is the philosophic position that the morality of actions are judged by their consequences, and I'm pretty sure that's not what you mean here. If, "basic consequentialism" to you mean, "things act like in the real world," I'm just going to have to say that I don't think we can make general statements. And, if I'm playing Clark Kent? The only...

For once, I largely agree with Celebrim - not just on this, but on the entire post. I have some additional thoughts I'll add. In a game theory sense, the stakes are known, but probabilistic. It is like playing a hand of blackjack for the right to make a spin on a roulette wheel. You don't know the exact outcome, but you can totally work out the expected return on the bet. I...

Alternatively, we say that the game rules define the role you are playing in that context, and you are defining "lick of sense" by reference to a world outside the fictional one you're playing in... and *that* doesn't make a whole lot of sense. "Roleplaying," is not generally, "rules do not apply, do what you want, so long as it sounds good." Role playing is informed and shaped by...

I can understand why you feel differently. However, I think you might be allowing "realism" to override several points (most already made, but I'll reiterate): For one thing - this orc is on guard. It isn't that he's actually helpless - tied up or unconscious. He is bored, but not insensate. He can still hear the twang of the bow in the distance, is still able to move, roll with the impact...

Our group described Mage: The Ascension as the best game when in the right hands, and the absolute worst game when in the wrong hands. Given that FATE has The Dresden Files right there for you to manipulate to your whims, yeah, that'd be a good alternative.

The capacity for hatred is aleph-null. The capacity for gnomes to make your hatred look pompous is at least aleph-one. The capacity for paladins to look down their noses at your self-centered antipathies is somewhere around aleph-fifteen. I'd argue that the arc of history bends toward apathy, but I don't care enough to bother.

It is an attack. The attacker is unseen by the target, so the attack is rolled with advantage. The PC is attacking with surprise. The character gets to apply whatever benefits are within their power (like, Sneak Attack, if they have that ability). But there's no "perfect shot - instant kill". If you can't pull together enough hit points of damage... well, that shot wasn't as perfect as you...

None tried it - we took it that this was a religious stricture, and doing so was roughly equivalent to a Paladin violating their alignment/code restrictions - they'd lose their powers, and have to find a way to atone. I think we assumed that clerics and druids who fell became fighters with d8s for hit points, which kinda sucked, so nobody risked it. One exception was made: Old-style bards,...

Yah. If a 15 year old city kid decides to play a ranger, you shouldn't expect the *player* to know proper approaches to how to acquire food or shelter, or follow tracks. The game very explicitly works to help you play characters who know and do things you, the player, cannot. Expecting player understanding of the character's domains of knowledge is not fair. People are so......

In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

Nor are players likely to be forensic scientists, or even people who actually have the skills in question, that would be able to name approaches would actually be fruitful. Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

There's this large swath of territory between, "this has no impact" and "the game depends on". Maybe we can consider what happens in that in-between, rather than driving to extreme strawmen used to assign "failure" to a GM, hey what?

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

Probably not in a Dredd campaign. Magic fits in with a bunch of other worlds of 2000ad but Dredd is more sci-fi. Maybe if they were psionic artifacts instead?

To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, I’m barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when I’m healed, it’s a...

If the weapon is powerful enough.. vaporizing the head and neck would kill the Titan. Otherwise, treat it like a giant troll.. massive regeneration capability (which can take time), once the titan is wounded enough and goes down, gives the mech pilot time to slash the vulnerable spot, IF they know about it. Otherwise, the Titans would just come back with same numbers while mech pilots have to...

Liminal is a new RPG by Paul Mitchener, just launched by Modiphius. It deals with "the boundary between the modern day United Kingdom and the Hidden World- the world of secret societies of magicians, a police division investigating Fortean crimes, fae courts, werewolf gangs, and haunted places where the walls between worlds are thin." UPDATE: The core book appears to have already sold out. ...

Two new miniature sets are now available from Modiphius, for use with their Star Trek Adventures RPG. These are the Original Series Landing Party, and the Iconic Villains sets. These are 32mm scale, unpainted resin miniatures. This set contains one male officer and one female officer of the Andorian, Denobulan, Tellarite, and Vulcan species, as well as two male humanoid miniatures. ...

FrogReaver, let us be clear: EN World does not have a strong concept of thread ownership. It isn't really *your* thread. You don't get editorial power. You don't get to say who posts in it, or what they say. Mistwell, that said, you could do to learn to limit how much you lay a wet blanket on other people's ideas. You made a suggestion for a change in direction. That suggestion was...

@Morrus Will you post a link to your completed tool? I do PHP as well, this is a tool of mine. I'm sure you'll recognize this Fantasy Coin Calculator from an old Dragon Magazine article. Which brings up a question of my own, have there been any newer articles like Coins in a Coffer? I wouldn't mind adding a new feature or two.

  • 10:07 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post D&D Has the Biggest Playerbase, So Why is it the Hardest for 3rd Party to Market Too?
Fair enough. I have to admit though, I find it a bit difficult to believe that Morrus has never seen 2pp used as a term on the boards. I have. But, hey, it's not really that big of an issue to be honest. Again, there are so few licensed publishers out there that it's not really a problem. As far as the original question goes, I'm actually frankly confused why someone would think that it's much harder for 3PP to get their name out there than it was, say, back in the d20 boom days. With the mountain of Patreons, Kickstarters and various other venues, I'm seeing an awful lot of pretty successful attempts at getting product out there. Thing is, there's just so much material out there that it can be pretty easy to get lost in the weeds.

  • 11:02 AM - Li Shenron mentioned Morrus in post PbP games: what works and what doesn't?
Oh and I have a suggestion for Morrus too... try to see if there is a possibility for adding a forum functionality by which a forum member can subscribe to a thread and get notifications when someone else replies to the thread. AFAIK this is not how it works at the moment, you get notifications only if you receive a PM, mention or XP. Having notifications on subscribed threads would greatly help a PbP player know when a game has progressed, and reach the thread in a couple of clicks rather than having to find it in the subforums.

...te, caring etc then men" so if a woman speaks up "loudly", she's acting against her role. I know that this holds true more in face-to-face environments, whereas online debates are often no more than mere black-on-white (or inversed) text. Still she identified as a woman. And from what I read, Afrodyte is done with playing the "nice little woman". She's (rightfully) upset about the fact that there are many victim-blaming posts or posts filled with micro-misogyny in this thread that were not being called out while her arguments were dissected. She's also under the impression that male-identifying posters are being less challenged and have it far easier being listened to. And I understand her. Because being a woman who's active online, who has a mind of her own and who gets vocal from time to time can be hard. That being said, I still think that ENWorld is one of the best places to discuss my/our hobby, including systemic problems in our community. And I'm really thankful for Morrus and the other mods to keep it this civil. (Because, honestly, other, more general gaming forums oftentimes look as if they're the little brethren of /b )

So I want to say I am sorry for the stuff I am missing and I want to do better. I don’t do cons but since the problem is everywhere I need to step up and do better in general. In general women are very willing to give individual men several chances to get it right so long as they are trying to move in a positive direction. Personally, I'll excuse any first offense that is done without malice (doing something on purpose to push buttons is not without malice in my book). I'll even accept slip-ups if you keep trying to do better. We're all human (I didn't see any AI's here) and humans make mistakes, so I'm never looking for perfection. I'm looking for progress and growth. I'll be honest, this discussion has gone on to the point where I'm surprised. That's pleasantly surprising and speaks well for Morrus and ENWorld's moderation.
  • 04:00 PM - RedJenOSU mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? No. That does not seem consistent with your viewpoint. Do you yield to authority (Morrus) and because lowkey13 has none per say in this environment you deem him as an enemy if he requests the same thing from you? No. Le me try to put the dots close together. Afrodyte has stated previously that if @Morrus feels that what she is doing should stop, then upon being notified of his choice as the moderator, Then she will respect his request as the moderator. At that time she would discontinue her attempt to demonstrate through her requests (Name, SSN, pic) instances in this discussion that she personally feels fall somewhere between unfriendly and hostile toward women.
  • 03:33 PM - Sadras mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
Yet, I find it interesting that my fairly benign statements showing that I don't automatically trust every self-proclaimed good dude are getting more heat than some of the deeply unsettling things several posters have been saying in the past 15 pages I've been participating on this thread. That is a curious statement. The last 15 pages have been relatively mild compared to what had been posted before where Morrus got involved several times. As for you getting heat more than the trolls, citation needed. I'm not seeing any evidence of what you're claiming, especially given the XP count which equates to support. If you really think that an exaggerated demonstration of the daily precautions I have to take to avoid harassment and assault is unfairly blaming poor, innocent men who are just trying to have a discussion, you haven't been paying attention to what several women and men have been saying on this thread, and you are not on my side (whatever being on my side supposedly means), and it all of it sustains and supports the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in environments where people are supposed to be safe. So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? Sorry, that would be copyright violation unless you get permission from the rights holder. Right-o. What I can do though is provide fair-use snippets. There isn't a great one-to-one match between these advanced classes presented and the original 3.5 classes. For example, the Wizard Advanced class get about 1/3 BAB (+3 @10th level). Spell casting and magic item creation are handled by a bunch of class feats. It looks like you could probably get into Wizard after about level 3 Smart character. You need 6 ranks in a skill and a feat expenditure. For example the Wizard class feats are Abjuration TraditionFX Attentive Cautious Conjuration TraditionFX Divination TraditionFX Educated Enchantment TraditionFX Evocation TraditionFX Illusion TraditionFX Improved Arcane CantripFX Necromantic TraditionFX Renown, Scholastic FocusFX Studious, Transmutation TraditionFX Things marked with FX refer to new feats in the document. • 03:19 AM - Luz quoted Morrus in post Report and advice after our first session in Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Doesn’t that defeat the point of the story, where the whole gimmick is that the house *isn’t* haunted? I don't think sprinkling in a few haunted house tropes to play on the PCs' expectations disrupts the plot. As elfctusher mentioned, they could be explained by a weathervane, etc. Or not at all...not everything needs an explanation when the DM is trying to create a certain atmosphere. While I like the house as presented, there's a wonderful opportunity to play up the haunted aspect of it and put the PCs on edge. I found it makes the big reveal of the smugglers more satisfying. I kept the encounter with the spectre isolated to just the attic, so it didn't mess with the smuggler plotline. So it worked well as a short diversion without having to rework the entire story.
  • 01:30 AM - Jer quoted Morrus in post "My Pathfinder Spoiler" Glimpses At Pathfinder 2
Why would "elf" take precednece over "human"? I'm guessing they're saying that a half-elf is a human/elf descendant and not, say, a goblin/elf descendant. My puzzlement is because everything in the text is about the elf ancestry, so it seems weird to use the name "Human Heritage" for something that is all about the benefits they gain from their elf heritage. I'd expect something named Human Heritage to say something about the character's human parentage rather than their elf ancestry, so to me it's either misnamed, or it says something about how PF2 is organizing their heritages that I don't get yet.

Doesn’t that defeat the point of the story, where the whole gimmick is that the house *isn’t* haunted? I might add something like mysterious creaking or footsteps, and then when the attic is explored they find a rope that runs from a weathervane to a device that makes the noises. Just to drive the point home that not only is the house not haunted but clearly somebody wants it to appear so. The one thing I'd like to figure out is to give them a feeling of having found the trap door through deduction and cleverness, without just making it a skill check. You know, challenge the player and all.

  • 03:51 PM - gyor quoted Morrus in post Setting Idea: Arcane Dyson Sphere
But how would you have night time inside a hollow sphere? In this setting people leave on planets and moons within the Dyson Sphere. It's not a Hollow Earth setting, a Dyson Sphere is the size of a solar system in this case with hundreds of inhabited planets and moons inside.
  • 09:43 AM - Paul Farquhar quoted Morrus in post Setting Idea: Arcane Dyson Sphere
But how would you have night time inside a hollow sphere? There is a couple of ways to achieve that, and I don't remember if they discussed it in the video about the GoT credit sequence. The actual credit sequence itself suggests the Sun is occluded, but that could be artistic licence. They do allude to the hollow sphere nature of the world being connected to the long variable length winters. I only got about a third of the way through the first book, so I don't know if the novels address cosmology at all - I suspect they don't. Of course it might be that the Magisters believe they live inside a hollow sphere, but are mistaken. Apart from occlusion, the other method is solar variability. The Sun simply goes dim for half of every 24 hours. That would certainly explain the wonky seasons.
  • 09:31 AM - Paul Farquhar quoted Morrus in post Setting Idea: Arcane Dyson Sphere

I thought the trailer looked great right up until the silly plane bit at the end. Did I see two Jumbo Jets crashing in slow motion with somebody sanding on top of one of them? Urgh. C-130s from the look and the fact that there's a quick shot of a pallet with a hummer dropping with someone holding to the underside of the pallet. It looks like one of the terminators did the whole arms into blades to cling to one of the planes. You mean post-T1. T1 introduced the T800. T2 introduce the T1000. Am I right in saying that you have to buy something on Amazon to rate it? And the street date was yesterday? I’m betting these people haven’t even read it yet! Hmm... I think you need to buy "something", but not the product in question. If you've actually bought the product from Amazon, a written review has the tag "Verified Purchase". (Ratings... not so much!) There's more than one review I've seen where they've criticised the shipping rather than the product. Cheers!
