Probably not in a Dredd campaign. Magic fits in with a bunch of other worlds of 2000ad but Dredd is more sci-fi. Maybe if they were psionic artifacts instead?

To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, Iím barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when Iím healed, itís a...

If the weapon is powerful enough.. vaporizing the head and neck would kill the Titan. Otherwise, treat it like a giant troll.. massive regeneration capability (which can take time), once the titan is wounded enough and goes down, gives the mech pilot time to slash the vulnerable spot, IF they know about it. Otherwise, the Titans would just come back with same numbers while mech pilots have to...

Liminal is a new RPG by Paul Mitchener, just launched by Modiphius. It deals with "the boundary between the modern day United Kingdom and the Hidden World- the world of secret societies of magicians, a police division investigating Fortean crimes, fae courts, werewolf gangs, and haunted places where the walls between worlds are thin." UPDATE: The core book appears to have already sold out. ...

I think part of the broad brush with which early D&D is painted is due to historical distance, but also because Gygax and other TSR authors (such as the infamous Roger Moore ďTuckerís KoboldsĒ story) talked about these early tendencies and how they were prevalent, and how we shouldnít do them; therefore, just like a historian who reads partial historical records and draws conclusions without...

There have been sitcoms featuring wartime medics, upper class toffs, pretty people in New York, and everything in between. The characters are always the butt of the joke. This time it was scientists. I don't think there's anything fundamental, here - I'm talking more about categorizing, and setting expectations. I just think about it, and realize there are parts of play where the GM is acting more like a judge/referee, and parts of play where the GM is acting more like an author. The former I'd call adjudication, the latter, not. There's connotations to "adjudication" that I don't think...

Boogeyman: "If I have the mechanics, I don't actually role play - I just use mechanics." FATE, as an example, puts social interaction on the same mechanical footing as physical interaction. In FATE-based games, if you say, "I attack" in physical combat, all you get is a very basic roll of your skill, which in general isn't so high as you'll be able to down anything other than a mook. ...

I am suggesting, as someone said upthread, that the GM has several functions, only one of which is adjudicating. When the GM is just deciding a result, for their own reasons unrelated to the rules of the game - that's not adjudicating. That moment when the GM is *authoring* a result, whatever their inspiration for that - that's not the moment they are adjudicating. I don't buy it. I...

I think this would be a fun little experiment series. 5e's bounded accuracy has made it where high level characters, while strong, are supposed to be toppled by the mob. Numbers mean more than level in 5e. So lets see how well that plays out in practice. In this series, we will take a pretty high level character (11th), and see how well they do against a mob of their lesser (1st level )...

I rather think that depends upon what the focus & intent of the game is. Just this weekend, I played a game which had no combat mechanic. The PCs weren't people addressing their challenges via personally applying physical force, so no system for doing so was included. We didn't miss it. If the intended action in a game is "kill things and take their stuff" then yes, your game needs a combat...

Why do you need rules for one, but not the other? GMs are capable of just saying, "Yes, this social interaction plays out in this manner, with these effects," and do so fairly, but they are somehow incapable of doing so with combat? They can't take a player's description of physical and magical actions, and just run with that like they can social interaction? That, really, is kind of...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. Splitting the party to chase down goblins in the woods is a questionable choice, and when they did that, they handled the consequences. Becoming villains is what happens when you are on the wrong side of the moral argument. I think, on their first go ever at RPGs, having them hunted down and either executed...

I don't want the Plane of Fire to be quite that deadly; portions may be, but overall I want it to be difficult and challenging but survivable for mid-level PC's. I've also got a variant Planar set up going: The elemental planes are located inside the (otherwise) hollow Earth. The inside of the mantle (facing in towards the center of the globe) is where the Planes of Earth and Water are -...

Wherever you set it, remember that an environment doesn't have to remain static. You can set things on fire, have sections of a building or bridge collapse, have the townsfolk show up to gawp, have law enforcement show up to arrest y'all (perhaps leading to temporary truces if the law enforcement folks are stronger than either guild), have some valuable treasure get revealed so people have an...

The next big arc of my campaign (5E, players are 6th level) is likely to involve the Plane of Fire and the City of Brass, and I'm curious what other people have done with those. My plan is to make the Plane of Fire a vast desert wasteland with Egyptian motifs; sometimes places swallowed up by the desert end up transported to here. The City of Brass itself I'm kind of wishy-washy on; past D&D...

Um, be careful there. You started with simulated violence, but then use *real* physical conflicts (minor ones, as toddlers) as your example. Apples and oranges. De-sensitization to violence *does* happen. If you are 11 years old, and you regularly see real violence in your home, in your school, and in your community, yes, you get de-sensitized (meaning - you have a decreased emotional...

Indeed Gradine is right, and I typed too quickly. I would say that violence is generally more suitable than sex, rather than either/or, one being suitable and the other not.

For something to currently be in the public domain it needs to have been created somewhere round the 1920s or before. The Black Company wonít be public domain for about 60 years yet.

Perhaps. But I would likely *position* it differently. See above - I was not going to run a game in which 13-year-olds end up on the wrong side of the moral argument. If I'm going to present the non-combatants as a challenge to kids, I'd position it clearly as a, "Well, nuts, you have to get around this without hurting anyone." Heck, in games for my adults, if the PCs choose the wrong...

Another comment on shields, realism and gaming: using 2 shields as a fighting style seems just plain wrong to me. (This was mentioned in an earlier post by Paizo). If I was GMing the game (probably won't ever happen) I wouldn't allow it, and I certainly won't use it as a player. Morrus, I see that terms like "virtue signalling" (a new one to me) and SJW are not allowed on this forum, but is the same true of terms like "white privilege" and similar?
  • 07:09 PM - Cergorach mentioned Morrus in post Do We Still Need "Oriental Adventures"?
"Two things I can't stand are racism and the Dutch!" - Michael Caine's character in one of those Austin Powers movies. When you quote a movie, quote it correctly! So that everyone can bake in it's glorious contrariety... ;-) Morrus: The article isn't discussing ANY particular culture, that would be great content! But your doing now what we all don't like saying that Africa or the Orient is a culture, it isn't. It's a collection of cultures. Instead of authors raving against things that are wrong with RPG products, why not show them how it's done?

  • 01:47 AM - thorgrit mentioned Morrus in post Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!
I'm interested, but cautiously optimistic. For my own purposes, I looked forward to Starfinder but it turned out to be too complicated for me to figure out character creation just reading the book. I remember when they came out with Unchained, and I was wondering if they'd use that to springboard off a new revised PF.5 or something, bundling the idea of traits and backgrounds and things all in together on a new core rulebook. Can do nothing but wait and see. I'm super pessimistic about any conversion guidelines that promise more than "just remake characters from the ground up" and "you can use old published adventures but ignore all the stats and use the new stats instead". Morrus: the link "Paizo has just announced" at the beginning appears to only point to the Paizo blog root, which I'm assuming will change over time. http://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo5lkl9?First-Look-at-the-Pathfinder-Playtest is the link to the specific announcement post.

  • 04:30 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post Make Up a Goblin Fact
Shouldn't this be a Wiki post? Would make it a whole lot easier to read previous facts. And number them. Like it says in the title. Making a table of random goblin traits to roll on so they're not all generic cannon fodder. Why should they be generic? Now dwarfs, they're all the same if you ask me. 63 (assuming the last numbered ones, though incorrect, actually deserved to be numbered): If you hit a goblin on the head hard enough, and roll a 1, it sinks into the ground and sprouts up from the ground at full hit points, just two feet away. Edit: Ah, Threaded Mode. Nice touch, Morrus. Any chance we could get some Word Wrap in there, and a resizable window?

  • 12:26 AM - Eltab mentioned Morrus in post 5e EPIC MONSTER UPDATES
Is there a post number limit? @Morrus can answer this definitively, if anybody can (and hopefully I just drew his attention to your question). I don't block anybody - no idea if anybody else blocks me - and the post count is 1019 at this time (51 pages as I have the format settings). I don't see any problems here yet. HOWEVER, I've seen other threads break down if they have many large posts in them. Some of the CharOp threads found out the hard way that there IS a "max post length" limit; this may eventually come back to bite your first page. I've only perused the thread here and there, but this sounds like awesome work. For a homebrew project, I'm going to have to compare your version of the Out of the Abyss demon lords to the "by-the-book" published versions. My BBEG is an FR-specific demon lord, and I want the fight against him to feel like the PCs really have saved the world from a Great Evil.

  • 11:25 AM - CubicsRube mentioned Morrus in post Single mechanics from an RPG you love
Wow. Theres a lot of ideas i like on an individual scale, but if i ever made them into a single system it'd be a frakenstein! I love adv/disad in 5e. Its easily my favourite thing in 5e for the same reason as Morrus above outlined. I love bennies. It makes heroes seem truly heroic to me and it allows them to turn the tide of fate to their favour. Im currently digging fria ligans core mechanics of the myz rules. Essentially, roll a 6 and its a success. Roll more 6es and you can use them to buy effects. Simple and elegant. I adore shadow of the demon lords spell schools and modular classess. In fact next campaign i want to run is curse of strahd converted to that system. I also enjoy unknown armies 3e shock gauges and trauma rules. I think they are the most realistic and interesting trauma and insanity rules in an rpg period. Dungeon worlds fronts are great for behind the scene gming. Shadowruns magic as a skill system woth their risk/reward on castuming at high power levels is the most magicy feeling system i think ivve played in. I'm sure theres more, but thats what i can remember at the moment!

I like how this guy in the link below (I feel like heís familiar... like heís up to something these days... something big) has ported skill challenges into 5e. Iíve already incorporated a few of my own design into our current campaign and theyíve gone well. I like Morrusís suggestion not to announce ďnow it's time for a skill challenge!Ē to the players. Seems pretty obvious, but pretty sure I did just that... so could have gone even better! Lol https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GvOeqDpkBm8

Sure. Provide a detailed economical analysis then. • 04:24 PM - DEFCON 1 quoted Morrus in post Bethesda Comments On Accusations Of Plagiarizing D&D Adventure
Sometimes people make genuine apologies and do try to do better. Well, make your mind up! Either they're cynically apologising because they have to, or they don't have to because it makes no difference. It can't be both things! :) (Well, in this case they're not; or at least haven't yet). Heh heh... well, sure it can! ;) it's that these companies usually don't feel the need to apologize for every little thing that people get up in arms over... but when something does blow up and someone in the company does say "We gotta do this!", it's not because the company on the whole is genuinely sorry, they do it just to get people off their backs. And that's cause most people don't actually care. As soon as the company says "Oh, we're very sorry this occurred, we didn't mean to upset anyone", people go "Oh, okay, good!" and then go on with their lives as though nothing ever happened, never thinking about it ever again. Because the action and the apology has literally NO impact on t...

  • 09:28 PM - variant quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 5
So it turns out that it just takes one dragon to win everything. Dany could have flown to Westeros at any time in the last few years with just one of her three dragons and burned Kings Landing to the ground, and anywhere else she wanted to. All that political chess, all those armies, the Dothraki, the North, the Unsullied, none of it mattered in the end. Just one dragon beats everything. Itís a nuclear weapon. The dragons had to grow up, but they've always been likened to weapons of mass destruction.

Especially since there wouldn't have even been the ballistae to worry about. All that political chess, all those armies, the Dothraki, the North, the Unsullied, none of it mattered in the end. Just one dragon beats everything. Itís a nuclear weapon. Except for the rock Jon was hiding behind in episode 3. If they had just quarried that kind of rock for the walls and the keep, she would have been in trouble. ;)

  • 04:54 PM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post On the Origins of Dragon Species
Iím not sure I understand the criticism. Just because we didnít discover something until the 1700s doesnít mean it didnít exist. If dragons were real, nature wouldnít limit their species only to to things humans had discovered. Yeah, this. I mean, I'm all for rethinking assumptions and trying to make the game more fun. But trying to rationalize design ideas by arguing that they are more historically accurate, or more scientific, or whatever, is kinda pointless in my opinion. So let's say we reconfigure all the dragons to meet the expectations of the OP. How will that make the game more fun? That's kind of all that matters. (And, no, "inconsistencies in the fluff annoy me and make the game less fun" is not a persuasive argument.)
  • 04:37 PM - Aldarc quoted Morrus in post On the Origins of Dragon Species
Iím not sure I understand the criticism. Just because we didnít discover something until the 1700s doesnít mean it didnít exist. If dragons were real, nature wouldnít limit their species only to to things humans had discovered. It would potentially limit how they are called or how we understood their natures. But I'm not sure if it is reasonable that D&D (and its world of magic) would be restricted to a Middle Age conception of science, philosophy, or alchemy.
  • 01:52 AM - variant quoted Morrus in post Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4 "The Last of the Starks"
Itís Westeros. Itís not medieval England. She would pride herself on whatever the writers say she prides herself on in that fictional culture. Yes, it's Westeros which is heavily grounded in Medieval England. She is not embarrassed to be a maiden in the books. The writers have gone completely against the books in most regards to culture and language since they left the books behind at season 5. There's a reason the show writers left out the "In the name of of the Maid I charge you to protect all women" part of the knighting ceremony.

  • 09:54 PM - kenmarable quoted Morrus in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
Thatís exactly how WotC produced several hardcovers. Still counts! I'm not saying it doesn't. Sorry if my comment was too brief and unclear, but my main point it towards those who think this is some sign that Paizo is worried PF 2e might fail and are shifting towards being a 5e publisher. For one thing, with WotC it was different because their staff was still working on other 5e system books. With Paizo, they are not. Their staff is still focused on PF. For another thing, Paizo is having fans pay for the creation of it. So depending on how much art & layout work is outsourced to Legendary Games as well, Paizo might have close to zero investment of their own resources in 5e beyond maybe warehouse space and distribution, I guess. So, sure, it absolutely counts that they are publishing a 5e book. But in regards to those who wonder if Paizo is making a major shift to 5e, they are doing pretty much the bare minimum of work and resources on their side to produce it. They aren't even pu...

  • 10:23 PM - Janx quoted Morrus in post Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD
So did anybody die in that massive battle at the end (other than Iron Man)? Iron Man Vision didn't come back (died pre-snap) Natasha NPCs. Many Bothans. Notice how there was not a disclaimer about "No Bothans were hurt or killed in the making of this film."
  • 10:14 PM - MarkB quoted Morrus in post Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD
Could they use the stones to bring Stark back? The only people they bring back via the stones are the Snapped, and as I recall it's suggested at some point that they can't bring back people who were outright killed via other means. Besides, using the stones is what killed Stark. Whoever used them to bring him back would likely suffer the same fate.
  • 10:00 PM - Sacrosanct quoted Morrus in post Dice Action Camera players in sex scandal!
And illegal if thatís true. d. And then there may be one individual who is/was 16 at the time, which is a separate issue- also difficult because the one person I saw quoted indicated that she was 21 and he did ask about the age. That said, that would be the really, really, really bad one from a strictly legal P.O.V. Well, I can't say how the pics got out there, but so far, I've personally seen more than one account from an underage girl show screen shots of the dick pics they say he sent them. Maybe they are all lying, but it does beg the question how these underage girls got these pics if he didn't send them to them. I suppose one could photoshop their screen shots to make it look like he sent it to them, but I find that dubious. As far as why we care (to the other poster who asked)? I don't. Not about the cheating. None of my business. But illegal activity and preying on kids? Yeah, I'm concerned about that

So did anybody die in that massive battle at the end (other than Iron Man)? Nobody named - I presume some Wakandans and sorcerers bought the farm, but all other named characters survive. And why didnít Chewie get a medal. I mean Black Widow get a funeral? I am pretty sure there's no good answer to that one.

It's interesting the order they've done the adventures -- the original Saltmarsh trilogy opens it, as expected, but Salvage Operation and Isle of the Abbey are inserted before The Final Enemy.Belated reply, and hopefully I'm not just repeating what someone else already said, but... The Final Enemy was infamously a meat grinder back in the day, for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who remembers it or has read the synopsis. (Hint1: out. Hint2: numbered.) In addition, it was possible for the PCs to come out of Danger at Dunwater with less XP than expected if they are less murderhobo-y than normal. Combine that two and you could have an underleveled, underequipped (i.e. hasn't found as much magic lootz) party going into a really tough The Final Enemy. So, it makes perfect sense to me to re-order the adventures to let the PCs level / gear up a bit before they tackle Final Enemy.

So does past Thor now no longer have Mjolnir, since future Thor turned up and stole it and took it back to the future? And when future Thor was talking to past mum, and called Mjolnir to him, did he rip it out of past Thor's hand? Is past Thor standing around with a confused look on his face wondering where Mjolnir just flew off to? (I don't remember where past Thor is at that point in time?) It seems to be more the case that any past they visit becomes an alternate universe. So alt-past-Thor loses his hammer, but also his girlfriend isn't dying of infinity-stone-poisoning anymore.

Oh, did he take Mjolnir with him? I missed that! yep, Cap had it with him when he got on the platform.

Is past Thor standing around with a confused look on his face wondering where Mjolnir just flew off to? (I don't remember where past Thor is at that point in time?) I think the 2019 avengers are relying on the 5-second Rule. So if they steal it from the past and return it right after they stole it, it's OK. So Cap went back in time at the end to return all the stones (and quill wakes up with a headache) along with Mjoljnir on Asgard. Past Thor is used to forgetting where he left his hammer, so it's no big deal.
