I think part of the broad brush with which early D&D is painted is due to historical distance, but also because Gygax and other TSR authors (such as the infamous Roger Moore ďTuckerís KoboldsĒ story) talked about these early tendencies and how they were prevalent, and how we shouldnít do them; therefore, just like a historian who reads partial historical records and draws conclusions without...

TBBT is a sitcom. Sitcoms are generally the same, just the characters change. There have been sitcoms featuring wartime medics, upper class toffs, pretty people in New York, and everything in between. The characters are always the butt of the joke. This time it was scientists. The fact that geeks finding scientists in the same mainstream sitcoms as everybody else gets them upset kinda...

I don't think there's anything fundamental, here - I'm talking more about categorizing, and setting expectations. I just think about it, and realize there are parts of play where the GM is acting more like a judge/referee, and parts of play where the GM is acting more like an author. The former I'd call adjudication, the latter, not. There's connotations to "adjudication" that I don't think...

In FATE-based games, if you say, "I attack" in physical combat, all you get is a very basic roll of your skill, which in general isn't so high as you'll be able to down anything other than a mook. ...

I am suggesting, as someone said upthread, that the GM has several functions, only one of which is adjudicating. When the GM is just deciding a result, for their own reasons unrelated to the rules of the game - that's not adjudicating. That moment when the GM is *authoring* a result, whatever their inspiration for that - that's not the moment they are adjudicating. I don't buy it. I...

I think this would be a fun little experiment series. 5e's bounded accuracy has made it where high level characters, while strong, are supposed to be toppled by the mob. Numbers mean more than level in 5e. So lets see how well that plays out in practice. In this series, we will take a pretty high level character (11th), and see how well they do against a mob of their lesser (1st level )...

I rather think that depends upon what the focus & intent of the game is. Just this weekend, I played a game which had no combat mechanic. The PCs weren't people addressing their challenges via personally applying physical force, so no system for doing so was included. We didn't miss it. If the intended action in a game is "kill things and take their stuff" then yes, your game needs a combat...

Why do you need rules for one, but not the other? GMs are capable of just saying, "Yes, this social interaction plays out in this manner, with these effects," and do so fairly, but they are somehow incapable of doing so with combat? They can't take a player's description of physical and magical actions, and just run with that like they can social interaction? That, really, is kind of...

See Burst attacks on page 99. Area attacks use a single attack roll (in this case AGI (throwing) or similar) vs VITAL DEFENSE of all targets, and a single damage roll. Otherwise it is resolved just like any other attack roll.

The thing about milestone leveling that breaks the association of levels to combat is that it gets applied when you reach the milestone, *however* you reach the milestone. It doesn't have to be "you gain a level when you hit a milestone." It can be, "you gain some number of XP when you hit a milestone." And I think that fixes all the issues with milestone leveling you mention. People who...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. This allows for more belief systems in the world.

There's a little-realized fact that there's no such thing as a no-holds-barred safe space. Safe spaces need boundaries, and the boundaries that are useful and safe for one group may not be for another.

I've been thinking about this issue for almost 40 years, and this summary is pretty good. Humans find sex and violence to be interesting, and of those two pursuits violence is the one suitable to group activity, as in a roleplaying game.

Dude. If it was a woman, you don't have to leap, because of the statistics involved. One in five women are raped at some point in their lives. 43% of heterosexual women report experiencing some sexual violence other than rape.* This stuff is so darned common, they don't even have to experience it to have a valid strong reaction, because they live in fear of it throughout their lives. And...

That language is inappropriate, and unacceptable. Do not post in this thread again. Anyone else think they want to try to push the limits? This person is getting booted from the thread. The next will probably get a vacation from the site, with no warning or prior discussion. The question isn't about severity. It is about the logic and form of the argument. Oh, most times it isn't like Snidely Whiplash, twirling his mustache, going, "BWAHAHAHA! Now I will say bad things about people!" It is usually quite casual and seems reasonable until someone puts a spotlight on it. You specifically pointed out how you think their testimony came from a desire to seek...

That's fair. And then what we are looking for is a list of things for people to rate a game on. There's an arti and science of that, too, which can get pretty deep. There are a few things that can get hairy when you are taking user ratings. Things like "complexity", where you might wonder if everyone has the same concept fo what you are talking about. But, you can sometimes get at what...

Well, there may be some thigns that nearly everyone cares about - some specific questions everyone wants to know the answer to. That's okay. But you should approach it *from the question* rather than from the answer. Well, where I come from, the defining characteristic of a thing we call a "metric" is that it is *measurable*, preferably in as objective a manner as possible. I don't...

I've been meaning to donate and help support ENWorld for a long time, but I'm not exactly sure the best way to go about it. I contributed when ENWorld went completely down several years ago, and I guess I never set up my ongoing contribution at that point. So, Morrus, what do you prefer? Through EN5ider or Trailseeker Patreons? Or the "ENWorld" Patreon I see on the main page? Or is the "subscription" method in account settings still the most viable way to do it? What does everyone else do?

  • 04:26 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post [UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers
The Guild is great for people doing book design as a hobby. But asking them to compete with people doing RPG book design as a living or as a business is problematic. The alternative to the DMsGuild isn't DriveThru or Kickstarter. It's people's fan blogs. It's Reddit. It's Pintrest. It's zero money. After all, 5e and the OGL was around for eighteen months before the Guild but very few people took the plunge to self publishing on DriveThru or Kickstarter. But isn't that the point? That the DMs Guild is meant to be a place for hobbyists to make a little bit of money for products they would have made anyway, but NOT a place for actual design businesses to peddle their wares? For actual for-profit design businesses they should be using things like the OGL, Kickstarter, and Patreon (like Morrus does) so that they have more control of how and what they produce for their business? Including things like branding, logos, original art, cartography, what percentage of the money they bring in and the like? I mean I can get that there's no real "intermediate" step between DMs Guild, and Kickstarter/OGL. A hobbyist gets the experience of trying publish using DMs Guild and tries to build a name for themselves... but the jump to then trying to run a Kickstarter in order to actually become a for-profit design house is a big one. There's no place in the middle where "the best of the best" can go to receive the same amount of viewership that DMs Guild grants them, while not needing as many up-front "fans" or name-recognition in order to successfully pull off an OGL/KS. So anything that keeps DMs Guild itself from becoming a more intermediate step for those writers is saddening and I can understand the frustration. But I don't think that's really what DMs Guild was ever meant to be ...

The campaign guide for 5e War of the Burning Sky should be coming out within a week or two. It contains a warfare supplement that Morrus created for the 3.5 version. The encounters are set around specific tasks the PCs can complete that influence the battle as a whole such as taking a strategic point, assassinating a high-level enemy official, defending against an enemy surge, etc.

I had to create all the Elena player Characters and Monsters, but it was pretty easy. End result they loved it. Morrus, if there is a place to put Fan made materials for No Thank You Evil! please let me know or I can create a section and upload what I have already created.

  • 05:55 AM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post A 308-Page Paperback WOIN Core Rulebook For Under $10!
Can someone tell me what all these acronyms stand for Truthfully, I only know some of them. WOIN stands for ďWhatís OLD is NEW,Ē which is a lovely pun used as the general name for the generic system that Morrus designed. OLD is the fantasy incarnation of WOIN, NEW is the sci-fi version, and NOW is the modern/contemporary equivalent. Despite OLD, NEW, and NOW being structured like acronyms, I donít think Iíve ever seen an official statement on what they stand for, and any guesses I might have would just be pure conjecture on my part.

The new Facebook/Twitter/Print/etc. buttons that won't stay hidden are quite annoying! They cover the text of the article. After hiding them, as soon as I scroll the article they unhide. Very much agreed! @Morrus. just a clarification, Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are not the same brand. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it would be beneficial for newcomers to either IP to not become confused.

Morrus: Legend of the Five Rings 5th Edition won't use the classical Roll and Keep dice (d10s) pool system of the previous four editions, but a modified Roll and Keep with proprietary, narrative dice (with 6 or 12 sides), similar - but not identical - to those introduced by Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition and then employed in the various Star Wars RPGs by Fantasy Flight Games (and now in their Genesys "universal" system).

  • 09:31 PM - pedr quoted Morrus in post Bethesda Pulls Promotional Elder Scrolls D&D Module Following Plagiarism Accusations
DMs Guild stuff isnít released under the OGL. I assume DDAL stuff isnít. Indeed. It might be lawful (but ridiculously rude) to release that adjustment/adaptation of the adventure on DMís Guild. Even that might breach DMís Guild terms relating to attribution of other DMís Guild sources. But the Elder Scrolls adventure at the very least has elements which are copied parts of the DDAL adventure, or clearly derived from the original, and the OGL wouldnít cover that even if the Elder Scrolls adventure contained a copy of the licence, with attribution, as the DDAL adventure isnít Open Game Content.

  • 03:38 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post A Look Inside Ghosts of Saltmarsh
It's interesting the order they've done the adventures -- the original Saltmarsh trilogy opens it, as expected, but Salvage Operation and Isle of the Abbey are inserted before The Final Enemy. Finishes on The Styes, as you'd expect. I wonder how much meta plot if any will be threaded through all this? Based on the Spoilers & Swag chatter, this will be very, very sandboxy.
  • 02:18 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4 "The Last of the Starks"
She's always come across like that to me. She does not like it when people disagree with her, and is very happy to coldly mete out extreme punishments and executions. That has been a change over time. Initially she was fairly kind, burning the witch only after she murdered her unborn child and turning Drago into a vegetable. Then she tried to avoid just killing the Masters as examples like her advisers suggested, even though they were behind the deaths of many of her people and more coming each day. Later she started punishing people who stood against her with more and more easy. This leap from punishing enemies into it's okay to murder 10,000 innocents in order to get what I want, is a rather large and sudden jump, though.

And here's my feedback on the latest update: Hey thanks again for the help! I should put the dimensions on the provided map. I had intended to do that before, so thanks for reminding me! Lots of other good stuff in here, like not putting the reward inside the trap section, naming it a Longsword and not just a Sword, the whole Ruse/Rouse fiasco. I think i just like to use the phrase "It appears as" instead of just saying "Is;" Which is a habit i should break. Upper/Lower should be Northern/Southern. Below is where I would disagree with you, and my explanations of why i disagree. I'd love your input on if you think i'm justified in these: I'm of the faction that doesn't like the narrative block texts that are read aloud by the DM, and feel like they do more harm than good. Same goes for NPC speaking parts. I think its best to ascribe motivations and character, then let the DM loose. Same goes for the environment. Twist and Rotate are synonyms, ;) There's also, generally, reason...

  • 08:51 PM - TheSword quoted Morrus in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
Just take the core rulebook along and say thatís what youíre using. That is an option. However as Matrix says the APs are using stuff beyond the core rulebook. Well beyond it. It also begs the question whatís the point of playing in a system that doesnít grow. Pathfinder grew too fast in a glut of trying to release two products a month at least. 5e grows, but at a manageable pace. With the option for conversions if you want to try things not released yet.
  • 08:34 PM - Matrix Sorcica quoted Morrus in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
Isnít it exactly as bloated as the number of books you choose to buy and use? Maybe, as long as you don't use official adventures/APs. The last many of them are bloated with monsters from late bestiaries, not to speak of the npcs who have classes, abilities and feats many people haven't even heard about. Sure, it's online for free, but a real pain to use.
  • 08:27 PM - TheSword quoted Morrus in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
Isnít it exactly as bloated as the number of books you choose to buy and use? I think that is true to some extent. Though with all of Pathfinder content in the Pfsrd, there were about 1500 feats if memory serves about 200 subclasses, 30 classes all available at playerís fingertips. I think in the end the designers become as paralysed by this as new players and DM do. It also become almost impossible to balance power when these things can be combined in so many things ways. I remember starting a new group Iíd collected and two experienced players trying to coach three new players through character gen. It was so time consuming - even with the 50 or so feats in the core books. The whole process took the entire five hour session.
  • 08:06 PM - Mistwell quoted Morrus in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
Isnít it exactly as bloated as the number of books you choose to buy and use? I've written about this concept a lot before, but the short answer is no. The longer answer is that nobody is an island in a group game like this. Particularly if you are the DM, and you're playing with friends who buy stuff they like, it becomes increasingly difficult to say no to everything, to test everything and see how it works with everything else, to anticipate how things will be used, etc.. Bloat impacts most people, even if they don't buy the books with those books. It usually creates unpleasant peer pressure if you are not willing to look at new stuff - and if you are willing to look at new stuff, that is itself a burden on you. And then if you say no, that's an additional (often frequent) burden dealing with the friends who asked. There is also a culture surrounding a game, not the least of which is this very message board, and opting out of new stuff sometimes means opting out of that culture...
  • 07:16 PM - Mercurius quoted Morrus in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
Successful doesnít mean ďthe single biggestĒ ó thereís more than one successful company or person in the world. Successful means achieving the goals of the company. This is key. Americans in particular have the "king of the hill" mentality, as if the King Gorilla is the only successful gorilla. It is an incredibly myopic worldview. Not everyone has this view explicitly, but it is a subconscious influence that is particularly prevalent among Americans.

sblock isnít supported by Tapatalk, unfortunately. Will the markup at least appear to warn people, or is it silently hidden, with the text appearing without any hitns it might be in a tag? And why doesn't Tapatalk support something like that? Are the developers not using their own software to read message boards, spoiler tags are not exactly uncommon in discussions? Or is SBLOCk some unusal special syntax only used by 1 % of vbulletin forums because vBulletin still hasn't standardized its tags? Don't we have a similar problem with quote tags? Or is it EN Worlds fault for not using standard tags?

For creative works? Thatís a whole other debate! I'm not sure that's really the case, though. On one hand, yes - the writers are creating something. A vision of how the game should work. But Catalyst, the publisher, ultimately needs to sell product. If a shift to less crunch means more sales, that's what they'll do. Those who enjoy the current edition will continue to play what they own already. Just as happened with D&D/Pathfinder as it rolled from 3 -> 4 -> 5.

Huh. Lots of people have brown, green, or blue eyes. My eyes are blue. Maybe she meant me? Maybe it happened so that all the people Arya killed so far didn't have blue eyes? Seems questionable, but I won't sift through the episodes to figure it out ;)
  • 06:04 AM - RangerWickett quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
Well yeah. Thatís the fundamental problem with the trope. Itís never been satisfying. It can kinda work if you have a villain who uses magic to mind control an army or something, and killing him frees the people.

Good points, everyone! It reminds me of all those times where the PCs take out the BBEG more quickly and easily than the DM expected them too. That can feel anticlimactic too. Letís just hope the last three episodes top this one! For one thing, now that Branís no longer in immediate danger, Iíd like to see him actually do something useful with his powers again! I kind of feel like Jaime, Tyrion, and Cersei need their own showdown. That family dynamic needs a payoff.Yeah, fair enough! So what do you think will happen with Bronn? Heh. Maybe Arya will change her face, come Cersei, and rule Westeros!Maybe!
