Um, no. I was responding directly to what DM Mike said. In the first bit we are agreeing (and I am merely elucidating with an example). In the second, I am directly responding to how he says he plays. So, really, you are 100% dead wrong - I am having a discussion with someone that seems to me 100% grounded in our play experiences. Please don't come to me 100% dead wrong, proclaiming...

None tried it - we took it that this was a religious stricture, and doing so was roughly equivalent to a Paladin violating their alignment/code restrictions - they'd lose their powers, and have to find a way to atone. I think we assumed that clerics and druids who fell became fighters with d8s for hit points, which kinda sucked, so nobody risked it. One exception was made: Old-style bards,...

Yah. If a 15 year old city kid decides to play a ranger, you shouldn't expect the *player* to know proper approaches to how to acquire food or shelter, or follow tracks. The game very explicitly works to help you play characters who know and do things you, the player, cannot. Expecting player understanding of the character's domains of knowledge is not fair. People are so......

You would replace stupid vitriolic edition wars with a similar screed against the entire line as a whole? That is not an improvement. We get it. You don't like WoD. That's been made abundantly clear. Now what? Having gotten that across... what's the goal? What do you want to get out of this thread?

In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

It isn't like this is a modern forensics game, where the PC can choose to take pictures of image processing, or take samples to the lab for analysis for approaches. Nor are players likely to be forensic scientists, or even people who actually have the skills in question, that would be able to name approaches would actually be fruitful. This is, honestly, a major problem with the "goal and...

Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

There's this large swath of territory between, "this has no impact" and "the game depends on". Maybe we can consider what happens in that in-between, rather than driving to extreme strawmen used to assign "failure" to a GM, hey what?

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

You spend a long post complaining about how WoD is fixed in one particular version of the supernatural, and then when someone points out that one corner of it isn't like that... that it can manage many different kinds of supernatural, you say it doesn't fit your fairly narrow image of what these supernatural people should be! But I don't think you need to telegraph that an enemy has a well-considered escape plan, which doesn't harm the PCs. An escaped villain is one...

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

When writing ZEITGEIST: The Gears of Revolution, there are many urban adventures, but the 'gating' was more information based. You didn't know you had a reason to go certain places until you accomplished preliminary investigations. You can look up and see the spooky mountain in the middle of the city from the get-go, but you don't know what you need to do up there until you follow a few leads...

I don't think there's anything fundamental, here - I'm talking more about categorizing, and setting expectations. I just think about it, and realize there are parts of play where the GM is acting more like a judge/referee, and parts of play where the GM is acting more like an author. The former I'd call adjudication, the latter, not. There's connotations to "adjudication" that I don't think...

  • 02:19 AM - ClaytonCross mentioned Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
This phenomenon of people quoting D&D Beyond stats to prove points happens the most right after they post some of their data. Those posts and threads are months old at this point and so I'm not going to dig them up. However, there's been comments about their data in more recent threads, but it's not important enough to go digging through pages and pages of comments looking for the proverbial needle in the haystick that I know is there (because I've recently read it) just to prove you wrong. Instead I'll give you one current example. The example: @Morrus did. It's still on the front page of this forum and shows in the thread title: "90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels" People also use invalid math to prove points. Example: "Average DPR with % hit", we have talked about it before that this is not an acute representation of actual game play damage being that average DPR is only correct about 3% of the time for any specific battle, does not account for 0 sum damage on miss, or loss of damage from over kill... however, I don't have a better metric for measuring damage. So I use it too sometimes to prove a point as do you. The same is true for D&D Beyond data. As @Morrus pointed out... We don’t need data at all. Sometimes they share stuff as a conversation point. And it’s fun to talk about. But we don’t need it. It’s just an excuse for us all to flap our lips You are correct that 1. It will be used to argue and 2. it is not accurate... However, when it agrees with an argument anyone is likel...

LOL, I love the n00b insult at the end. It's very entertaining! :) Yes which proves his point in that if post are a measure of validity Morrus's 39,521 post to your 3,940 posts would make you a n00b and irrelevant if we are calling that a valid maker of knowledge base. Which we are not. So while your one of the more interesting posters to read you do have a tendency to get a bit dismissive of posters based on off point arguments like posts. I still came to your thread because you make interesting discussion and I heard you. I have even posted a on the D&D Beyond feature requests asking for player inactive characters tags and a statement on slides listing the day delimiter so as we read slides we have a beater representation of what the slide is depicting. That said, questioning the validity of one someone says based on how much they said instead of the content of their argument makes you look bad, instead of making them look unqualified. If your going to say the statement was in jest... their is no indication in the text of the post that implies that and the person your posting to does not know you well enough to infer that ...

If one is offering a responsorial or correction to a stance that doesn't exist their entire effort is vaporware. Congratulations, you won the debate with.. [checks notes] no one. Not a single person did what you are countering. This phenomenon of people quoting D&D Beyond stats to prove points happens the most right after they post some of their data. It's still on the front page of this forum and shows in the thread title: "90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels" By the way, why the heck does someone with 762 posts in the last 4 years think he has any grasp on the variety of points and justifications for those points that people actually post on this forum?

  • 06:33 PM - FrogReaver mentioned Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
... They already have a method to account for that, which gives an even better data set than the question you proposed: When the Data says "Active Characters" it means they have controlled for characters who haven't been updated in the past X days. It doesn't matter if the character is meant to be an NPC or PC, it just maters if someone is actually going back to update it, all other characters are considered to be abandoned or a test character. Morrus has claimed multiple times that the charts represent all characters created and even includes the ones not necessarily played. I'd lean toward him being correct on this but maybe not?

Danny I have Savage Worlds/Rifts I just haven’t delved into it very deeply. The issue I have with N&SS is I am a little lost about character creation. Example: OCC/Martial Arts list a variety of defence moves - does that give you a bonus to those or just allow you to do those moves? Morrus I do have O.L.D. but don’t have a gaming group to try it. If the kids like N&SS I may have to check out N.O.W.

cbwjm, if you can read this, notifications don’t always link you to only one page away from the intended post. Sometimes it’s multiple pages off. You’ll see, over time, unless you continue sidestepping the issue, in which case, yeah, it’s kind of nonsense to claim it doesn’t bother you. Of course they don’t bother you, they don’t even affect you. And again, I’m not actually blocking you to “teach you a lesson.” I’m demonstrating that the bugs with the block system allow me to do such things, which is a clear exploit and not something any well-thought-out block feature should enable. EDIT: And also, if you can read this, that’s just further proof that the system is completely borked and needs fixing. Can we Morrus about this? Because this is a serious problem.

  • 04:40 AM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
...ery real science. Postulating completely unverifiable elements to make your equations work is not good science. Now, at the moment, it's the best we've got, so, there's that. In any case, I was trying to be a bit tongue in cheek and poking a bit of fun at astronomers. But, I would point out, "isn't really science" is not what I said. What I said was that astronomy gets a bit more latitude than other sciences when it comes time to actually prove their hypotheses. Being able to make up stuff just so your equations work doesn't work in other sciences. And, unfortunately, people who get into sciences can be just as dogmatic as anyone else. I mean, you're apparently absolutely sure that your model of the universe is correct despite the fact that it hasn't actually been proven and remains largely theoretical. I mean, heck, NASA says you're wrong: https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/review/dr-marc-space/dark-sky.html I'm a little more comfortable believing NASA than you, Morrus.

  • 11:54 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
I don't know if this is a sad though but if its 1 light year or 100 right now functionally its the same thing in terms of interstellar travel. Its to far for us. Morrus theres a lot of things that scientists are still fuzzy on. For example is space infinite. Another one is the Big Bang Theory. OK there is a big ball of mass, energy or whatever and it explodes 13 billion years ago. Who or what created it? How did it get their to explode in the 1st place? Would that who or what in effect be God? Note I am not religious was just wondering. I thought the "is space infinite" question was largely resolved. If space was truly infinite, then the night sky would be solid white with stars. In an infinite universe, you would have infinite stars, therefore, from our point of view, there would be almost no space between the stars in the night sky. At least, that's the way it was explained to me. But, Morrus, I'm certainly no anti-scientist campaigner. Just pointing out that in one branch of science, the rules get... err... relaxed somewhat.

  • 11:48 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
That looks like great fun Morrus. Cool beans. Just as a thought though, would it not be easier to make the map mostly the full size of the page and then include the text of the encounters right in the rooms? Would seem like a more efficient use of space. And, just a nitpick, you forgot to label area 1 - the Entrance.

  • 09:41 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post Jonathan Tweet: Prologue to Third Edition
But you can’t write rules under the assumption that people will ignore them. But given the nature of RPG, that is one of the safest design assumptions possible. Baked right into Rule Zero, innit?
  • 09:32 PM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post What would be some good metics to evaluate RPG rules/systems?
It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I probably shouldn't have used the word "metric" because it suggests something objective, whereas I'm imagining a value that's subjective, and/or maybe an aggregate/consensus value. But I do think think there are things that can be evaluated this way, such as the examples I gave. Or maybe it's sort of a correspondence analysis, where you would say the game in question has these features like games A, B, and C, and these other features like games D, and E, but this other feature like game F. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game. The same could be said for driving cars and visiting houses. And yet time is finite.

And now it’s my turn! What is an /s? I know that normally this blog is a place full of joy and happiness and maybe even the occasional Mini-taur joke. But some people, such as me, suffer from Sarcasm Immodulation Disorder. I’m unable to control the amount of sarcasm, irony or sardonic asides in my writing. Also known as Felicity Smoak's Syndrome, SID is a recognized psycho-medical condition which you may have read about in the comments section of Youtube or Cracked.com. Numerous prominent Americans suffer from this debilitating disease Morrus, including the guy who played on Dr. Cox on “Scrubs” and entertainment great David Letterman. For this reason, I try to be very careful in marking my comments, as some people are incapable of discerning "sarcasm" and/or "humor" without appropriate cues, including, but not limited to, "/s," giant neon signs that say, "Caution: May Contain Sardonic Material," and/or the following image: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/0f/cc/52/0fcc52e8eb6da2a703d48c648813cce5.jpg Help fight the prejudice, Morrus. To be fair, nobody has carefully explained to me that subtraction is really hard yet. That was a significant portion of my post. It's not about easy vs difficult. It's about how error prone the math is. It's because addition is commutative and subtraction is not. In the example with a THAC0 of 15 and an attack roll of 13, you've got to remember that 15 - 13 = 2 is correct but 13 - 15 = -2 is incorrect. In the example of bonuses, you have to either remember that you have to add them to the die roll or you have to subtract them from your THAC0. So 15 - 13 - 1 is correct, and 15 - (13 + 1) is correct, but 15 - (13 - 1) is incorrect, and 15 - 13 + 1 is incorrect. In the example of penalties, you have to either remember that you have to add them to the die roll or you have to subtract them from your THAC0. So 15 - 13 + 1 is correct, and 15 - (13 - 1) is correct, but 15 - (13 + 1) is incorrect, and 15 - 13 - 1 is incorrect. Compare that to an addition based system. In t...

It hasn’t proved to be a problem in any of my games. That is what is important, and I am sure a lot of playtesting has happened as well. It was just a concern that I had. Thanks for your replies :)
  • 05:33 PM - Flips quoted Morrus in post New WOIN errata?
Dang, that’s a grade 78 character minimum! Or Grade 11 (8d6) with some strategic bonuses and exploits (high ground, aim, flank/xfire, point blank shot, jouster, luck) gets you to 11d6 or 12d6 pretty easily. I am not saying it is guaranteed to get you there all the time, but it not unlikely to come up. Maybe this is exactly as intended, but if a party of 11th grade characters can generally ignore the fact that their enemy has 100+ DEF, it worries me. Other than scaling up the number of 6s required (like half your pool, min 3) I am not sure that there is a solution. I think an early draft was like this.

  • 10:03 PM - Oofta quoted Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
Wow? So ... you don't accept that some people found THAC0 painful? You keep asking people to explain it to you. It's simple. Some people find it more difficult. Period. End of story. You ask "why" ... well the answer is that apparently not everyone thinks like you do. My wife started playing D&D with 2E and she hates THAC0 because it makes her subtract and she finds the numbers (especially negatives) confusing. She's a lot smarter than me (and most people for that matter) in a lot of ways, but she would never go back to 2E because of the "backwards math". I can't give you a better explanation, nobody can. Some people find it more difficult and greatly prefer the way the rules changed for 3. That's either something you can accept or not.

I'm currently finding quote works with a double click, but not a single click. Can anybody confirm? I can confirm that it works to quote, but there is still a bug with it. It condenses the quote into paragraph form when it's not supposed to be. For example... First 1 Second 2 Third 3 Fourth 4 Fifth 5 Gets turned into... First 1Second 2Third 3Fourth 4Fifth 5

Other than that, I also have the XP/laugh issue (only in desktop view, mobile view seems to work). At first thought it was on my end, so I logged out then logged back in, but even that was a problem at first, as the login wouldn't take, until I closed the tab and followed a link from the weekly email (which fortunately I hadn't deleted yet). So logins may be another bug issue.
  • 07:18 AM - Lanefan quoted Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
To be fair, nobody has carefully explained to me that subtraction is really hard yet.Is isn't. But I still never used THAC0, for two reasons - one philosophical and one practical. Philosophical reason: both as player and DM I want the combat matrix (or later, BAB) to be DM-side info rather than player-side. Practical reason: for me as DM it puts in an extra unnecessary step in figuring out whether an attack hits or not; that step in fact being that I have to start the calculation an entirely different way. The way I do it now the player gives me their roll after adjustments, I add the target's AC* and any other unknown-to-players factors* and if the result is 21+ it's a hit. If instead a player were to just tell me "I hit AC 4" I'd have to reverse-engineer how that number was arrived at (knowing that the player in theory doesn't know the combat matrix) and then do the same steps I already do. * - can be + or - numbers, or 0.

To be fair, nobody has carefully explained to me that subtraction is really hard yet.Subtraction is really hard because... math. Did that work? I tried. B-) -- I loved THAC0 back in 2E. It made the game a little less complex, faster, and easier to play. Those are all good things in my book.

  • 12:03 PM - TallIan quoted Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
I feel sorry for poor old THAC0. It has a bad reputation for being complex, when it's exactly as complex as the current method! I wonder how much of the bad rap comes from the varying AC of the edition - flat footed; surprised; attacks from the rear - rather than THAC0 being complicated. People only remember AC being more complicated and it’s easier to blame one thing.

It is? OP is congruent with my own personal experience. I've ended games over it before, and finally flat :):):):)ing gave up on trying to stop it.
