Early on there were two - DEFENSE, and MENTAL DEFENSE. Then there were three - MELEE, RANGED, and MENTAL, and so it meant MELEE and RANGED. Now there are four, but it still means MELEE and RANGED. It's a little historical remnant which could probably be done away with.

I dunno if we have to worry about it being "paramount" in general. This is not about character advancement, or about classes, or about particular powers, or even a feat. We are talking, honestly, about a very basic setup - getting the drop on the opponent, and being able to attack before they realize you are there. A very basic tactic, used throughout history. The logic being used to...

It's a good question, and something which completely slipped through playtesting! I would, on reflection, say that immunity overrides vulnerability, so you'd end up immune to both.

Um, where I come from, "consequentialism" is the philosophic position that the morality of actions are judged by their consequences, and I'm pretty sure that's not what you mean here. If, "basic consequentialism" to you mean, "things act like in the real world," I'm just going to have to say that I don't think we can make general statements. And, if I'm playing Clark Kent? The only...

For once, I largely agree with Celebrim - not just on this, but on the entire post. I have some additional thoughts I'll add. In a game theory sense, the stakes are known, but probabilistic. It is like playing a hand of blackjack for the right to make a spin on a roulette wheel. You don't know the exact outcome, but you can totally work out the expected return on the bet. I...

Alternatively, we say that the game rules define the role you are playing in that context, and you are defining "lick of sense" by reference to a world outside the fictional one you're playing in... and *that* doesn't make a whole lot of sense. "Roleplaying," is not generally, "rules do not apply, do what you want, so long as it sounds good." Role playing is informed and shaped by...

I can understand why you feel differently. However, I think you might be allowing "realism" to override several points (most already made, but I'll reiterate): For one thing - this orc is on guard. It isn't that he's actually helpless - tied up or unconscious. He is bored, but not insensate. He can still hear the twang of the bow in the distance, is still able to move, roll with the impact...

Our group described Mage: The Ascension as the best game when in the right hands, and the absolute worst game when in the wrong hands. Given that FATE has The Dresden Files right there for you to manipulate to your whims, yeah, that'd be a good alternative.

The capacity for hatred is aleph-null. The capacity for gnomes to make your hatred look pompous is at least aleph-one. The capacity for paladins to look down their noses at your self-centered antipathies is somewhere around aleph-fifteen. I'd argue that the arc of history bends toward apathy, but I don't care enough to bother.

It is an attack. The attacker is unseen by the target, so the attack is rolled with advantage. The PC is attacking with surprise. The character gets to apply whatever benefits are within their power (like, Sneak Attack, if they have that ability). But there's no "perfect shot - instant kill". If you can't pull together enough hit points of damage... well, that shot wasn't as perfect as you...

None tried it - we took it that this was a religious stricture, and doing so was roughly equivalent to a Paladin violating their alignment/code restrictions - they'd lose their powers, and have to find a way to atone. I think we assumed that clerics and druids who fell became fighters with d8s for hit points, which kinda sucked, so nobody risked it. One exception was made: Old-style bards,...

Yah. If a 15 year old city kid decides to play a ranger, you shouldn't expect the *player* to know proper approaches to how to acquire food or shelter, or follow tracks. The game very explicitly works to help you play characters who know and do things you, the player, cannot. Expecting player understanding of the character's domains of knowledge is not fair. People are so......

In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

It means a lot of rerolls and shifting all of the players and monsters, either on cards or in your head. Way more complicated every round as opposed to just "hey your down, remember you lose your next turn no matter what".

Probably not in a Dredd campaign. Magic fits in with a bunch of other worlds of 2000ad but Dredd is more sci-fi. Maybe if they were psionic artifacts instead?

To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, I’m barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when I’m healed, it’s a...

If the weapon is powerful enough.. vaporizing the head and neck would kill the Titan. Otherwise, treat it like a giant troll.. massive regeneration capability (which can take time), once the titan is wounded enough and goes down, gives the mech pilot time to slash the vulnerable spot, IF they know about it. Otherwise, the Titans would just come back with same numbers while mech pilots have to...

Liminal is a new RPG by Paul Mitchener, just launched by Modiphius. It deals with "the boundary between the modern day United Kingdom and the Hidden World- the world of secret societies of magicians, a police division investigating Fortean crimes, fae courts, werewolf gangs, and haunted places where the walls between worlds are thin." UPDATE: The core book appears to have already sold out. ...

Two new miniature sets are now available from Modiphius, for use with their Star Trek Adventures RPG. These are the Original Series Landing Party, and the Iconic Villains sets. These are 32mm scale, unpainted resin miniatures. This set contains one male officer and one female officer of the Andorian, Denobulan, Tellarite, and Vulcan species, as well as two male humanoid miniatures. ...

You don't get to say who posts in it, or what they say. Mistwell, that said, you could do to learn to limit how much you lay a wet blanket on other people's ideas. Morrus I also subscribed as a Silver Supporter on March 25th according to PayPal. I am worried I am going insane because I can't seem to find the donate/subscription/support button/page/whatever anymore. I am positive I donated so it feels vaguely like the website is gaslighting me. I know that 19.99 is the amount I paid through PayPal but I can't find the page that explains how long of a subscription that purchases. (If ANYONE reading this can link me to the page, I'd be very appreciative. Right now I'm not sure if the donate/support button/link has been taken down, if I'm losing my mind, or if I just SUUUUUUPER critically failed my perception check.) Anyway, I, also would really, really appreciate getting my subscriber benefits. (I think) I forbore saying anything until now because I wanted to make sure my payment had PLENTY of time to process and because I didn't want to be a pain in the ass. But as it's been almost a month I need to speak up and I really do want my custom user titl...

...arget). So it's rules legal as long as the movement, Ready action, and trigger are all faithfully applied and resolved. Whether or not you find the outcome satisfying even though it's rules legal is another matter though. This. The dm can move them, one at time, and then have them wait to ready an action to attack. but Telvin: - If they had multiple attacks, they'd lose their extra attacks because readying takes your action and then it takes your 'reaction' to make the attack. You can't ready multiple attacks. Really, in this scenario(because of pack tactics), only the first bloodhawk (per PC) needs to ready until any of their other allies moved in. The others can just move in and attack as long as one of their allies was already adjacent. So, if they DM felt bloodhawks were smart enough to move and ready and only attacked once, then it's legal. With INT 3, I might have made the first bloodhawk attack with a normal attack...maybe. 3 is still pretty smart. Morrus Hmmmm. What *is* the rule for simultaneous initiative? Having them all move then all attack creates a massive tactical advantage over having them each move then attack. For me, they all go at once but still 'one at a time.' It probably evens out because now the PCs can all go simultaneously and use the same tactics. Although, it makes initiative a bit more important, I think. Having the PCs all go first and take out several of the bloodhawks before they acted might have changed the outcome. Telvin Who won initiative?

  • 04:43 PM - CleverNickName mentioned Morrus in post Critical Role Kickstarter Predition Game: Guess the Funding Outcome (GTFO)
Thanks to the #CritterPush during last night's broadcast, the Kickstarter blew through their final stretch goal (of $8.8M) and then another $111K before it slowed back down. mortwatcher barely got to spend any time at all in the limelight, before Henry took the lead. Last night's event really blew up my spreadsheet too, which depends on a smooth U-shaped graph and wasn't designed to handle spikes like this. I'm now predicting Morrus to win...but let's be honest, nobody knows anymore. Critters are crazy. (For those not in the know, the #CritterPush event was coordinated in the Kickstarter comment section by a handful of pledges who thought it would be hilarious if they broke their final stretch goal live during their regular broadcast. So they coordinated tens of thousands of donors over social media, asking everyone to increase their pledges by just $5 to accomplish that task. It worked better than they had hoped, because like I said: Critters are crazy.)

No evidence here that this book will not be equally Greyhawk focused as the original modules (more, quite possibly). Mike Mearls was just talking about Greyhawk and how he wants to get a Greyhawk product into the world on Dragon Talk a couple weeks ago. Relax. Pattern of behavior of taking items out of greyhawk to FR ToEE and ToH moved out of greyhawk into realms. So its very possible it will happen again. Morrus. Thanks for starting to understand. Greyhawk is important to more then a few. And love to see it fly again.

None of them are any Blackadder. Rowan Atkison is brilliant... but I can only take him in small doses before his style begins to wear on me. I definitely get more full-on guffaws and "hit the pause button because I am laughing too hard to pay attention to the show" from these latter programs, I'm afraid. But then again, I'm not British. And sure as heck comedy is context-dependent. I probably don't have the cultural referents to really *get* Blackadder.

  • 11:36 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
I understand that some people feel that way about the show. I don't share that feeling, though. To loop back, Morrus, you asked, "Why shouldn’t geeks be in the same mainstream sitcoms as everybody else?" So, now we see some reasons. You haven't been subjected to geek-shaming, so no, you wouldn't share the feeling. Shows that lean too hard on sexist or racist tropes are understood to be problematic by folks who are not usually subject to racism or sexism. This show, which leaned on other traditionally negative tropes for its jokes... should also be understood as problematic, no? Maybe not as egregious, but still an issue.
  • 11:33 PM - Henry quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
No. I was definitely a geek, and hung around with my geek friends, but there was no bullying. I get that other people have different experiences. For me, quite a lot actually, until about my senior year in high school. My defense was making friends with other kids who the bullies were scared of. :) In particular, one dude’s homophobic slur was his favorite word to use against me and basically anyone he didn’t like. Don’t know if he ever actually used it against a gay person or not, but my liking D&D and being good at my classes were all the excuse he needed every time he threatened to beat me up. Now, 20-odd years later I have a lot of perspective and see it for the childishness it was - in comparison, nerd-jokes and insults are pretty mild compared to people in this world with real problems.
  • 04:40 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
I understand that some people feel that way about the show. I don't share that feeling, though. So, a possibly relevant question (for anyone, really) that is somewhat personal so you don't need to answer it publicly, but bears consideration: Were you, as a kid, bullied for having some of the personality traits seen in the show's main characters? Did you get (socially) pushed around or demeaned for being a geek/nerd?

TBBT is a sitcom. Sitcoms are generally the same, just the characters change. There have been sitcoms featuring wartime medics, upper class toffs, pretty people in New York, and everything in between. The characters are always the butt of the joke. This time it was scientists. The fact that geeks finding scientists in the same mainstream sitcoms as everybody else gets them upset kinda reinforces the “otherness” of them. Why shouldn’t geeks be in the same mainstream sitcoms as everybody else? I don’t see middle class British dentists getting upset because of a sitcom. I’ve never understood the triggering nature of TBBT with some individuals; I self-identify as a geek/nerd and have in public for close to twenty years now; my love of computing, comic books, RPGs, and pop sci-if has never been in question even when old CEOs and CFOs in business suits would poke fun at me while prattling about their weekend golf games, the RBIs of Pete Rose or A-Rod, and how the blacktop and tight turns...
  • 03:24 AM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Geekdom Takes a Bow
I don’t see middle class British dentists getting upset because of a sitcom. There are differences, though. The issue at hand isn't that they are "scientists". It is that they are people matching geek stereotypes. They aren't the butt of the jokes for being scientists - they are being the butt of jokes because of their stereotypical behaviors - behaviors for which geeks have traditionally already been made fun of for having. You are taking a subculture that has been traditionally marginalized, and making fun of the things for which they were marginalized.

What he was probably thinking is defending himself intelligently from someone accusing him of being racist. You might dislike the phrase "geek blackphace", i must admit it's not to my taste either, but that's not a valid reason to ban the user from the thread in my opinion. The other one is an example of how vicious and unfair a baseless allegation can be.

  • 05:32 PM - Draegn quoted Morrus in post New survey from WotC about boxed sets
They do that for two reasons: 1) it’s more visible on the store shelf 2) you can put your own stuff in it too From a psychological point of view, a box that is not full can cause people to feel they are not getting their money's worth. To this end one local shop will not stock box sets, for, the books out sell the boxes. A box set has to be special ordered. From the point of view of one's wallet, a larger box weighs more and thus shipping costs are increased. I rather have my shelves be neat and tidy, unlike my brothers's whose shelving looks like a jenga game.

I usually ban it in my games, as well as evil, unless I'm deliberately accommodating evil characters. I've rarely ever seen the "evil" side of CN, and only ever from players that were disruptive no matter what they played. The CN characters I've seen have tended to just be motivated by people and what they want in life, without directly thinking or caring much about broad morality or cosmic scales. Not surprise. CB is flexible morality. You wanna be good, but still able to kill that dude you do not like. Sometimes it's that. Usually it's a morality that is based on something like "hurting people for selfish reasons is bad, as has to be opposed", rather than "XYZ specific actions are Evil". That is, violence isn't good or evil, the results of violence are good or evil. If the result of me killing the dragon is that it stops killing villagers because they can't afford to bring it as many co...

We simply upgraded the sever to https. Are there any plans to address them?
  • 01:15 AM - Charlaquin quoted Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
i misspoke. I meant to say Chaotic Neutral. Ahh, I see. Yeah, that’s probably the most likely non-evil alignment to get banned, but I think DMs disallowing CN is still fairly uncommon.
  • 12:08 AM - Charlaquin quoted Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
In my experience Chaotic Evil is the evilest evil but your DM said you weren't allowed to be evil. I usually ban it in my games, as well as evil, unless I'm deliberately accommodating evil characters. Hence why I said it’s the alignment least likely for the DM to allow.
