I just something similar. I didn't change the damage, but allowed the blade to gain any benefits of the blast. So invocations that give knockback for example, could be used. The invocation that adds your charisma mod would apply, etc.

The thing about milestone leveling that breaks the association of levels to combat is that it gets applied when you reach the milestone, *however* you reach the milestone. It doesn't have to be "you gain a level when you hit a milestone." It can be, "you gain some number of XP when you hit a milestone." And I think that fixes all the issues with milestone leveling you mention. People who...

I think you are missing the point a bit. Folks are asking whether "violent" is the "natural state" for humans. They then have to turn and look for what the "natural state" for humans actually is... and wind up reaching for straws, because they want to find the thing analogous to the feral cat, when no such thing exists. Basically, "natural" human behavior is everything we already see. ...

You aren't the only one in the thread that has tried to refer to something like the human "natural state". I was speaking to the entire concept with your post as merely a jumping off point, as it was the most recent to use the concept. No. Just as a wild cat is not "without cat influence". Wild is variously, "in a natural environment" or "undomesticated" - which I restated as 'without...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. This allows for more belief systems in the world.

The scientific community recognizes "good" and "evil" as human concepts, not natural states of the universe. The question of whether we are born good or evil makes little sense, when we *define* good and evil only after we are born! There's a problem with discussing our "default state". The game's rules are certainly largely about combat. The *could* have rules that were as rich for dealing with social/political action, or other activity, but they don't. If we hand players a hammer, we should expect them to treat problems like nails... There are games that do better. The CORTEX+ based Leverage game, for example, does include combat. There's "questionable choice" and "end up on the wrong side of the moral argument". Splitting the party to chase down goblins in the woods is a questionable choice, and when they did that, they handled the consequences. Becoming villains is what happens when you are on the wrong side of the moral argument. I think, on their first go ever at RPGs, having them hunted down and either executed...

A little while back, I taught my 13-year-old de facto goddaughter how to play D&D. That gave me an entirely new perspective on what "safe" means. There's a little-realized fact that there's no such thing as a no-holds-barred safe space. Safe spaces need boundaries, and the boundaries that are useful and safe for one group may not be for another.

Don't ask, "What would be a good metric?" Ask instead: "What matters to you about a game?" Not just as a thought exercise - Make an actual list of things that matter to you. We can try to separate what of those things are GM/group dependent, and what's rules-dependent, and what measures we could put that could be useful. Metrics should be chosen to answer specific questions.

It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game.

The official Acquisitions Incorporated Dungeon Manual D&D book has snuck up on us, and is releasing in the next week or so. Artist Aviv Or has shown off some of the artwork she did for the book on Twitter. "I started with designing Positions - a character's role in the company on top of their standard D&D class - as iconic characters. Like the Cartographer, who's about discovering places...

  • 10:01 PM - squibbles quoted Morrus in post Adventures in Middle Earth magic - does it work?
Yep, we played it weekly for about 3 months. Our impression was that we felt The One Ring was a better system to run Middle Earth in. Turns out D&D with a lot of the magic stripped out doesn’t work too well, at least in our experience. Would you mind elaborating on your thoughts about magic? How do you find that it doesn't work well? I am interested in running a low magic game* and, after pouring through the forums, have consistently seen AiME pointed to as the best example of low magic rules. Having read the AiME player's guide and the chapter on magic in the loremaster's guide, I would like to use some of its ideas in my campaign--maybe having classes with access to thematically limited or reskinned spells instead of the AiME default. I'm not really planning to set my game in Middle Earth, so using The One Ring wouldn't help me. I'm just curious to know where AiME's low magic rules go wrong. Thanks! *by low magic I mean rare magic but not necessarily weak magic.
  • 08:59 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post It’s LAUNCH DAY For The Pathfinder 2 Playtest!
But they aren’t making 5E. They’re making Pathfinder. That’s a bit like saying “I’d be more excited about ice cream if it was a steak”. The analogy is more like "I'd be more excited by this ice cream if it was Strawberry rather than Macha Green Tea flavored, or the Chocolate that WotC is producing" They are making D&D, the comparison is like to like, just differing in details. Haven't played any, probably won't. I was interested in the life path character generation, but that has proven not to be very fun at all, and not at all streamlined. Still better than abstract point buy systems, but half-baked. What I really love, however, are the Archetypes, and how they replace multiclassing and Prestige Classes entirely.
  • 07:58 PM - TwoSix quoted Morrus in post It’s LAUNCH DAY For The Pathfinder 2 Playtest!
It would still be *called* Pathfinder, but that’s just a label. It wouldn’t be Pathfinder in any meaningful sense. I'll be honest, with only one edition of Pathfinder released, and that edition derived from another game anyway, I'd have trouble defining what the intrinsic characteristics of Pathfinder are.
  • 07:39 PM - TwoSix quoted Morrus in post It’s LAUNCH DAY For The Pathfinder 2 Playtest!
But they aren’t making 5E. They’re making Pathfinder. That’s a bit like saying “I’d be more excited about ice cream if it was a steak”. But they could make Pathfinder more like 5e. Nothing is stopping them other than their design intent. A brand has no immutable characteristics other than what its owners choose to give it. They could make PF2e a d100 roll under system, and it would still be Pathfinder.
  • 07:09 PM - R_J_K75 quoted Morrus in post Dungeon Clockworks: Artificial Monsters For Your D&D Games
You choose how much you want to pay. You pay an amount of your choice per item, up to the monthly limit you set. So if you decide you want to pay $2 per item, but no more than $8 per month, you'll be charged $2 per item, but no more than $8 per month. In other words, it's pay-what-you-want. Got it thanks. Thats what I suspected but definitely clarifies things. Found a couple things on there Im gonna pick up tomorrow.
  • 06:47 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post It’s LAUNCH DAY For The Pathfinder 2 Playtest!
Oh, absolutely. If what you want is 5E, and your main criticism is that something isn’t 5E, Pathfinder isn’t for you. What CapnZapp has expressed a desire for isn't 5E, but a game incorporating the OGL lessons from 5E while providing a different, crunchier experience. This is something PF2 could have been.
  • 03:28 PM - Reynard quoted Morrus in post It’s LAUNCH DAY For The Pathfinder 2 Playtest!
I do kinda feel like “D&D Advanced” is the pitch which would appeal to me. I haven’t seen it yet (my preorder is yet to arrive, and I can’t read long PDFs) but it’s still my major anticipated game for that exact reason.I think a lot of folks would like that option. I don't think that is what PF2 is, however. It seems much more aimed at streamlining PF's complexity while maintaining its fiddliness appeal and baking in the setting lore more than PF1. Does that make it a Fantasy Heartbreaker? Possibly, though it would still be the largest and most successful one.

Or Wil Wheaton, maybe? I’d say those are the two best bets. Both are published Green Ronin author's, to boot.
  • 01:42 AM - Nork quoted Morrus in post The playtest is here!!
Guys. Play the playtest adventures and then fill out the playtest surveys. Your thoughts on how the playtest document should be laid out are utterly irrelevant. Funny, that isn't what Paizo said when asked about if feedback on layout was useful. They even stated that there will be at least one survey on the layout of the document itself. Are you sure your thoughts are not what is utterly irrelevant here?

Guys. Play the playtest adventures and then fill out the playtest surveys. Your thoughts on how the playtest document should be laid out are utterly irrelevant. If the Playtest rules are representative of a possible final product then maybe the Playtest layout is also representative of how the final book might be presented...utterly irrelevant....seems a bit harsh to me. Not trying to get myself in an argument with the man in charge of the site etc...but surely the layout of the Playtest is at least a bit relevant? I admit that I haven’t read all the posts on here though so maybe I am taking your comment out of context :)

  • 08:31 PM - Pauper quoted Morrus in post Congratulations to 2018's ENnie Award Winners!
Chaosium and Arc Dream Publishing cleaned up last night. Chaosium is a perennial ENnie winner -- even in 2015, when WotC was cleaning up awards for releasing 5E, Chaosium still garnered a Gold and Silver. And Arc Dream will be back next year, if my first couple of perusals of the Delta Green Handler's Guide is any indication. Awards (these ones at least) aren't about moving product. They may not be *about* moving product, but as Zak S. points out, they do help move product, which isn't a bad thing for products that deserve the attention. It does point out, though, that a curated list of nominees is likely more effective than a fan-generated list, as the fans will go for what's ubiquitous (see the guy asking for why Starfinder didn't win more awards), thus shining a spotlight on products that are already well-known rather than highlighting the 'hidden gems' that help make the RPG hobby as vibrant as it is. Not saying that the ENnies have to go hipster, but they work better as h...

Well, people can do what they want. But yeah, that’s useless playtest feedback. Play the games as written and answer the periodic playtest questions. "What I changed to make your game fun for my group" seems like perfect feedback to me.
  • 05:13 PM - Mallus quoted Morrus in post Patrick Stewart in new Star Trek show
I’m gonna guess that you mean a different David Mitchell to the one I’m familiar with! Ha! They're both British, though. I meant novelist David Mitchell, author of Could Atlas, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet, Ghostwritten, etc. Not David Mitchel from Mitchell and Webb - but didn't they guest star in an episode of Doctor Who? I'd been down with both Mitchell's combining their talents for an episode of Star Trek.

  • 08:40 PM - (un)reason quoted Morrus in post Views?
Admitting it took you 7 months to notice may have the opposite effect to your intended one! :D I noticed because I was using the sort thread by views function, which is still there, (curiosity about most popular threads) but doesn't make much sense without the ability to see exactly how many views a thread has had. Either the views need to come back or that sorting option needs to go as well, otherwise it just feels weird.
  • 08:33 PM - Mallus quoted Morrus in post Patrick Stewart in new Star Trek show
Creators are neither allowed to pander or to not pander. Such is modern internet entitlement culture. :) Sometimes I wish fandom would make up its mind about fan service. All this "give us exactly what we claim to want, but don't pander to us" is wearying. Me, I'm just happy to be getting more Picard.

Congratulations. As per the rules of this site, please leave rants against inclusivity out of this forum. I wasn't against inclusivity........It was the fact that Paizo thought players weren't inclusive in the first place that they had to even bring it up. I have no problem with inclusivity. As long as a player isn't a dick, I allow anyone to play.

Other stuff they can't tell us about. A few lucky buyers may find golden tickets that will gain them entry to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Shhhh.
