I think this would be a fun little experiment series. 5e's bounded accuracy has made it where high level characters, while strong, are supposed to be toppled by the mob. Numbers mean more than level in 5e. So lets see how well that plays out in practice. In this series, we will take a pretty high level character (11th), and see how well they do against a mob of their lesser (1st level )...

I rather think that depends upon what the focus & intent of the game is. Just this weekend, I played a game which had no combat mechanic. The PCs weren't people addressing their challenges via personally applying physical force, so no system for doing so was included. We didn't miss it. If the intended action in a game is "kill things and take their stuff" then yes, your game needs a combat...

Why do you need rules for one, but not the other? GMs are capable of just saying, "Yes, this social interaction plays out in this manner, with these effects," and do so fairly, but they are somehow incapable of doing so with combat? They can't take a player's description of physical and magical actions, and just run with that like they can social interaction? That, really, is kind of...

No, that’s the opposite of what I just said. :) It literally just does what it says in that paragraph — to benefit from higher quality equipment, you need an appropriate skill. You can’t benefit from an exceptional quality pistol without enough ranks in pistols. Same with armour.

See Burst attacks on page 99. Area attacks use a single attack roll (in this case AGI (throwing) or similar) vs VITAL DEFENSE of all targets, and a single damage roll. Otherwise it is resolved just like any other attack roll.

The thing about milestone leveling that breaks the association of levels to combat is that it gets applied when you reach the milestone, *however* you reach the milestone. It doesn't have to be "you gain a level when you hit a milestone." It can be, "you gain some number of XP when you hit a milestone." And I think that fixes all the issues with milestone leveling you mention. People who...

I think you are missing the point a bit. Folks are asking whether "violent" is the "natural state" for humans. They then have to turn and look for what the "natural state" for humans actually is... and wind up reaching for straws, because they want to find the thing analogous to the feral cat, when no such thing exists. Basically, "natural" human behavior is everything we already see. ...

You aren't the only one in the thread that has tried to refer to something like the human "natural state". I was speaking to the entire concept with your post as merely a jumping off point, as it was the most recent to use the concept. No. Just as a wild cat is not "without cat influence". Wild is variously, "in a natural environment" or "undomesticated" - which I restated as 'without...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. This allows for more belief systems in the world.

The scientific community recognizes "good" and "evil" as human concepts, not natural states of the universe. Splitting the party to chase down goblins in the woods is a questionable choice, and when they did that, they handled the consequences. There's a little-realized fact that there's no such thing as a no-holds-barred safe space. Safe spaces need boundaries, and the boundaries that are useful and safe for one group may not be for another.

Don't ask, "What would be a good metric?" Ask instead: "What matters to you about a game?" Not just as a thought exercise - Make an actual list of things that matter to you. We can try to separate what of those things are GM/group dependent, and what's rules-dependent, and what measures we could put that could be useful. Metrics should be chosen to answer specific questions.

Okay. But do you not recognize that means the strength of your argument comes only from your personal credibility? Do you even want that? Do you really want anyone to change their behavior based on what you admit is merely a subjective sense? I mean, apply that to basically *any other real problem people face* - do you want people acting on subjective senses, or real, solid information? ...

"...the whole hobby..."? Where are you getting the idea that anything other than a few vocal people here and on social media even give a fetid dingo's kidney about this - or are even aware of it? I mean that sincerely - where are you getting the impression that any significant portion of "the whole hobby" is focused on something other than their own lives and gaming sessions? Remember that...

It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game.

I don't believe any of the victims of the Salem witch trials were running role playing games, so they are perhaps not a great example from which to extrapolate.

I think you have a problem in that you are discussing what you see as a general issue, in a thread about an incident that does not support your points well at all. Find a documented incident where public shaming had a major impact on a GM, and it turns out the public was really wrong, and you might have something. But here, what you have are hypothetical, things you *fear* can happen, but for...

How long till we should see the POD on Drivethru? It took 16 days for chapter 1. Start looking for it in about 2 weeks. That includes the time for the proof copy to be printed and sent to @Morrus for approval. EDIT: Ninja'd by @Morrus with a better explanation. Figures. :D And welcome to the boards, Benathalis. Juuuust as the 4rth edition of warhammer was about to be released too... Morrus, could this impact EN world somehow?

  • 10:07 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post D&D Has the Biggest Playerbase, So Why is it the Hardest for 3rd Party to Market Too?
Fair enough. I have to admit though, I find it a bit difficult to believe that Morrus has never seen 2pp used as a term on the boards. I have. But, hey, it's not really that big of an issue to be honest. Again, there are so few licensed publishers out there that it's not really a problem. As far as the original question goes, I'm actually frankly confused why someone would think that it's much harder for 3PP to get their name out there than it was, say, back in the d20 boom days. With the mountain of Patreons, Kickstarters and various other venues, I'm seeing an awful lot of pretty successful attempts at getting product out there. Thing is, there's just so much material out there that it can be pretty easy to get lost in the weeds.

  • 11:02 AM - Li Shenron mentioned Morrus in post PbP games: what works and what doesn't?
Oh and I have a suggestion for Morrus too... try to see if there is a possibility for adding a forum functionality by which a forum member can subscribe to a thread and get notifications when someone else replies to the thread. AFAIK this is not how it works at the moment, you get notifications only if you receive a PM, mention or XP. Having notifications on subscribed threads would greatly help a PbP player know when a game has progressed, and reach the thread in a couple of clicks rather than having to find it in the subforums.

...te, caring etc then men" so if a woman speaks up "loudly", she's acting against her role. I know that this holds true more in face-to-face environments, whereas online debates are often no more than mere black-on-white (or inversed) text. Still she identified as a woman. And from what I read, Afrodyte is done with playing the "nice little woman". She's (rightfully) upset about the fact that there are many victim-blaming posts or posts filled with micro-misogyny in this thread that were not being called out while her arguments were dissected. She's also under the impression that male-identifying posters are being less challenged and have it far easier being listened to. And I understand her. Because being a woman who's active online, who has a mind of her own and who gets vocal from time to time can be hard. That being said, I still think that ENWorld is one of the best places to discuss my/our hobby, including systemic problems in our community. And I'm really thankful for Morrus and the other mods to keep it this civil. (Because, honestly, other, more general gaming forums oftentimes look as if they're the little brethren of /b )

  • 08:19 PM - RedJenOSU mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
So I want to say I am sorry for the stuff I am missing and I want to do better. I don’t do cons but since the problem is everywhere I need to step up and do better in general. In general women are very willing to give individual men several chances to get it right so long as they are trying to move in a positive direction. Personally, I'll excuse any first offense that is done without malice (doing something on purpose to push buttons is not without malice in my book). I'll even accept slip-ups if you keep trying to do better. We're all human (I didn't see any AI's here) and humans make mistakes, so I'm never looking for perfection. I'm looking for progress and growth. I'll be honest, this discussion has gone on to the point where I'm surprised. That's pleasantly surprising and speaks well for Morrus and ENWorld's moderation.
  • 04:00 PM - RedJenOSU mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? No. That does not seem consistent with your viewpoint. Do you yield to authority (Morrus) and because lowkey13 has none per say in this environment you deem him as an enemy if he requests the same thing from you? No. Le me try to put the dots close together. Afrodyte has stated previously that if @Morrus feels that what she is doing should stop, then upon being notified of his choice as the moderator, Then she will respect his request as the moderator. At that time she would discontinue her attempt to demonstrate through her requests (Name, SSN, pic) instances in this discussion that she personally feels fall somewhere between unfriendly and hostile toward women.
  • 03:33 PM - Sadras mentioned Morrus in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
Yet, I find it interesting that my fairly benign statements showing that I don't automatically trust every self-proclaimed good dude are getting more heat than some of the deeply unsettling things several posters have been saying in the past 15 pages I've been participating on this thread. That is a curious statement. The last 15 pages have been relatively mild compared to what had been posted before where Morrus got involved several times. As for you getting heat more than the trolls, citation needed. I'm not seeing any evidence of what you're claiming, especially given the XP count which equates to support. If you really think that an exaggerated demonstration of the daily precautions I have to take to avoid harassment and assault is unfairly blaming poor, innocent men who are just trying to have a discussion, you haven't been paying attention to what several women and men have been saying on this thread, and you are not on my side (whatever being on my side supposedly means), and it all of it sustains and supports the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in environments where people are supposed to be safe. So if @Morrus told you to stop he would not be on your side and he you be sustaining and supporting the structural dynamics that allow harassment and assault to continue and thrive in this environment so you won't feel safe? Furthermore why doe...

  • 02:58 AM - Mistwell mentioned Morrus in post [+] Plus Threads
...o started the thread then replied "You need to read up on the concept of "plus" threads if you think I want an echo chamber, or if you don't see the very valid reasons why the site supports such threads. If you want to keep discussing this that's fine, but I will need to ask you to start a new thread to do it." A second user said they doubted the premise of the thread was possible, and was told again "This is a plus thread. If you want to argue against the premise of the thread, start a new one." When questioned on that, the poster then said, "Questioning the point of the thread is exactly what you don't get to do in a plus thread." Can a user now declare a thread they start to be designated a "plus" thread and therefore police their thread for anyone who questions a premise of the topic? Are we now supposed to always start a new thread if we question the premise of a designated "plus" thread? It's possible I missed that new rule. I asked elsewhere and someone mentioned Morrus had discussed the possibility of such a thing but it had never been enacted as a rule as far as they knew. So, is this a thing now?

  • 11:20 PM - Mercador quoted Morrus in post Paizo's Kingmaker Crowdfunding Campaign Extended
They’re moving to a new edition. I thought that was clear. :) Why would it violate your trust in Paizo? Is coming out with material to support the new edition something untrustworthy? But I don't want to :'( Not sure why though, I guess it's all the books I have, like I feel betrayed, it's weird I know.
  • 08:48 PM - Mercador quoted Morrus in post Paizo's Kingmaker Crowdfunding Campaign Extended
Because it’s very existence is a PF2 promotion. I guess I'm really not the target audience then. Doing that is just alienate my trust in Paizo. Supporting PF1 with a hardcover release just as you're about to release PF2 seems like a bad idea. Plus Kingmaker was originally released as a PF1 adventure path, so it's available for the PF1 rules currently if people want it. I'm pretty sure that the RotR and CotCT were originally released for 3.5E and then released as a hardcover compilation updated to PF1 rules. There's something I don't get; in French, there's several adventure paths in hardcover format, not just the first two. As far as I know, the French market is way under the numbers of the English one, it can't be that hard to print 6 adventures paths and put it in a hardcover book..?
  • 07:40 AM - Imaculata quoted Morrus in post "I'm BATMAN!" - Robert Pattison
I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Keaton and Ledger were both highly derided choices until they proved to be excellent. Actors act! Yeah, both actors were heavily criticised. People were furious about Ledger playing the joker... but turns out he might be one of the best Joker's of all time (second only to Mark Hamill in my opinion). Then again, DC is having an epic dance with failure lately. If they get Batman right with Pattison, it's probably on accident.

  • 06:10 PM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post Thinking about an advancement system
There needed to be? Doesn't common sense apply at this stage? Nope. This is the Internet. If you can only roll when the GM tells you to, then the method of play becomes convincing the GM that you should be allowed to roll. If you can only advance when there would be a consequence for failure, then your job is to convince the GM that the consequences would be meaningful. The rules put the GM in the position of playing the bad guy, who resists your attempts at having fun. There is a good point here, although I'm about as happy with the packaging as Umbran is. Advancement by (conflict resolution) failure means there's no advancement if the GM doesn't ask for conflict rolls. In such a situation, yes, the player has an incentive to try and roll. Which is bass ackwards to me, since it drives me nuts when players roll before they role. Percentile system. Everything is a skill. You improve with failure. Every time you fail a skill check, the skill improves by 1%. Technically they ...

I’m struggling with all the Arrowverse superhero shows right now. Flash has lost its sense of fun, Arrow is boring, Legends is just slapstick. Supergirl is currently the best of them. We watched them and they were alright but dumped the lot. Gotham, Agents, Arrow, Flash all went downhill. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones were better but got cancelled. Iron Fist was just bad.

eBay for me again then, I guess. you cant just wait till september? i mean i get it that june to september is a huge exclusive window for Target, but... i suppose for review purposes it sucks. i am actually surprised there isnt more Hasbro interference on how wizards/D&D release stuff and how they handle exclusive releases. also i think they have done well for wizards/D&D with the IP tie in, the rick and morty thing sounds fantastic, and i personally enjoyed the stranger things tie in, i also got it for 12 dollars.

  • 06:30 PM - Celebrim quoted Morrus in post Thinking about an advancement system
Inspired by CoC and similar systems. I haven’t thought it all the way through yet. It’s very similar to the way CoC does it. Percentile system. Everything is a skill. You improve with failure. Every time you fail a skill check, the skill improves by 1%. Technically they can go over 100% (modifiers might bring it down). Hmmm. Definitely easy to abuse though. Find lots of easy tasks and repeat. Though I guess you’d stop failing them, so your score would remain static. I've always liked the CoC system in that it "made sense" that what the player would get better in would be what they practiced doing, and it had built in balance that the better you were the harder it was to advance. Mouse Guard does something similar where to advance you must accumulate a certain number of successes and failures. And that probably makes even more sense. But over the years I've gotten away from always caring about what made sense. Right now I mostly care whether the math works. And for an...

I’m struggling with all the Arrowverse superhero shows right now. Flash has lost its sense of fun, Arrow is boring, Legends is just slapstick. Supergirl is currently the best of them. The crossover shows, in an attempt to force viewers to watch the shows that they weren't currently also watching, had the affect on me of making me drop the lot. Unfortunately it seems that amazon has dropped "The Tick", which I was enjoying.
  • 03:42 PM - damned quoted Morrus in post Fantasy Grounds Usage Stats Through Q1 2019: D&D Up, Pathfinder Down
The Amazon sales rankings suggest otherwise. Or they suggest what these stats also suggest and that is the market is growing. 5E is without any doubt the best selling D&D variant and D&D has almost always been the best selling RPG (bar that period during 4E that we dont talk about in polite company). I have shelves and shelves of dead tree RPG books. But I have even more digital RPG content. And I buy digital RPG content at more than 10:1 ratio to physical books these days. I havent stopped buying physical RPG books but Im far more selective about the physical ones that I do buy.

OK. https://i.imgur.com/IRIIU87.jpg "Some updates and tweaks" to the system doesn't sound like a simple reprint incorporating the errata to me but, as you so eloquently put it, OK. EDIT: omgosh that's huge, is there a way to shrink it to a normal human level?
  • 06:16 PM - J. H. Frank quoted Morrus in post Warhammer 40K Wrath & Glory Now To Be Produced By... Cubicle 7!
Yeah, but “reprint” can’t. GW just released a new Chaos codex that is an exact copy of the first one, just with an extra signature of pages worked in holding entirely new pages stolen from a different, newer supplement. It was absolutely a “revised reprint” or “expanded reprint” or even just a “reprint.” This prescriptivist thing where people are acting like they can divine the exact plan from two words with variable meanings is remarkable. My only position is that I am assuming the worst because that is what I expect from Wrath & Glory now.

What's the name of your D&D character? The folks at D&D Beyond have released some more stats, and this time they're sharing the top 15 D&D player character names. What these stats appear to tell us is that many people call their character "Bob", Wellp, I guess that finally puts all those D&D Beyond stats into perspective.
  • 05:41 PM - GreyLord quoted Morrus in post Meet Us At UK Games Expo!
EN Publishing will be at UK Games Expo this year (March 31st-June 2nd) on Stand 2-T1. We will have all our Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000 AD products available to buy, we’re running 1-hour demos, and we also we’ll have an exclusive small print run of the next book, LUNA-1! We literally only have 30 of these printed for the expo (there will be many more printed later, don’t worry!) so it’s strictly first come first served. Please do stop by and say hello Heads up...I believe that is May 31st-June 2nd that you will be there. Good Luck and hope many stop by to see you!
