In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

It isn't like this is a modern forensics game, where the PC can choose to take pictures of image processing, or take samples to the lab for analysis for approaches. Nor are players likely to be forensic scientists, or even people who actually have the skills in question, that would be able to name approaches would actually be fruitful. This is, honestly, a major problem with the "goal and...

Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

That pretty much my plan. I also agree with this - it solved a lot of my players problems when I realized climbing mostly didn't require rolls unless its particularly dangerous. This is true, but thieves need to be able to climb walls!

There's this large swath of territory between, "this has no impact" and "the game depends on". Maybe we can consider what happens in that in-between, rather than driving to extreme strawmen used to assign "failure" to a GM, hey what?

Moral superiority of the adventurers, sure. It is only "colonial" if said adventurers move in and take over the place. Settling down is not in the Murder Hobo Manifesto - they are typically raiders, rather than colonizers.

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

You spend a long post complaining about how WoD is fixed in one particular version of the supernatural, and then when someone points out that one corner of it isn't like that... that it can manage many different kinds of supernatural, you say it doesn't fit your fairly narrow image of what these supernatural people should be! You may want to telegraph offensive capabilities that are beyond level appropriate - save-or-die, or "this is a huge ancient dragon, not some punk hatchling". But I don't think you need to telegraph that an enemy has a well-considered escape plan, which doesn't harm the PCs. An escaped villain is one...

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, I’m barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when I’m healed, it’s a...

They do that for two reasons: 1) it’s more visible on the store shelf 2) you can put your own stuff in it too

Boogeyman: "If I have the mechanics, I don't actually role play - I just use mechanics." FATE, as an example, puts social interaction on the same mechanical footing as physical interaction. In FATE-based games, if you say, "I attack" in physical combat, all you get is a very basic roll of your skill, which in general isn't so high as you'll be able to down anything other than a mook. ...

I am suggesting, as someone said upthread, that the GM has several functions, only one of which is adjudicating. When the GM is just deciding a result, for their own reasons unrelated to the rules of the game - that's not adjudicating. That moment when the GM is *authoring* a result, whatever their inspiration for that - that's not the moment they are adjudicating. I don't buy it. I...

I think this would be a fun little experiment series. 5e's bounded accuracy has made it where high level characters, while strong, are supposed to be toppled by the mob. Numbers mean more than level in 5e. So lets see how well that plays out in practice. In this series, we will take a pretty high level character (11th), and see how well they do against a mob of their lesser (1st level )...

  • 08:24 PM - darjr mentioned Morrus in post Gale Force Nine secret new board game simply called D&D
From Board Game Geeks twitter account In Aug 2018, @GaleForceNine will release a new Dungeons & Dragons board game; info is embargoed until @Wizards_DnD reveals the setting. —WEM Whatever could "reveals the setting" mean?! New setting? Old setting based game? If so which one? Black box == Darksun? Whatever the heck! Could this be one of the code named products or something else? Anybody have any other "leaks" on it? https://twitter.com/BoardGameGeek/status/965662644534431745?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw 94361 Morrus

  • 05:25 AM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Starting Adventure 5.
Erg. I haven't read the details of that for years. Hm. PbPs take forever usually. So I'd either just lay it out as a background thing, or make it ultra simplified. Morrus, I don't recall James's screen name to ping him, but maybe he could use this as a baseline for converting this scene in the 5e version, which should probably be more rules-lite. To take down Kell, the Flint Police will be going on numerous missions over the next few days. {Brief overview of their missions.} You're coordinating them, though, so together the team needs to accomplish the following five tasks. For any of these tasks, you can just make a skill check to represent general planning time, or we can roleplay a bit if you want to do something hands-on, or if you have a clever idea you want to pitch. You might call a favor in instead and have someone else make the check on your behalf. You can split the tasks up however you like, but it takes 4 hours for a PC to make each of these skill checks, so you probably want to divide them among the party. The more tasks you succeed at, the better the task force is at taking down Kell's crime syndicate. The DCs are secret. Whenever y...

  • 11:09 PM - hbarsquared mentioned Morrus in post Best way to make a contribution?
I've been meaning to donate and help support ENWorld for a long time, but I'm not exactly sure the best way to go about it. I contributed when ENWorld went completely down several years ago, and I guess I never set up my ongoing contribution at that point. So, Morrus, what do you prefer? Through EN5ider or Trailseeker Patreons? Or the "ENWorld" Patreon I see on the main page? Or is the "subscription" method in account settings still the most viable way to do it? What does everyone else do?

  • 04:26 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post [UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers
The Guild is great for people doing book design as a hobby. But asking them to compete with people doing RPG book design as a living or as a business is problematic. The alternative to the DMsGuild isn't DriveThru or Kickstarter. It's people's fan blogs. It's Reddit. It's Pintrest. It's zero money. After all, 5e and the OGL was around for eighteen months before the Guild but very few people took the plunge to self publishing on DriveThru or Kickstarter. But isn't that the point? That the DMs Guild is meant to be a place for hobbyists to make a little bit of money for products they would have made anyway, but NOT a place for actual design businesses to peddle their wares? For actual for-profit design businesses they should be using things like the OGL, Kickstarter, and Patreon (like Morrus does) so that they have more control of how and what they produce for their business? Including things like branding, logos, original art, cartography, what percentage of the money they bring in and the like? I mean I can get that there's no real "intermediate" step between DMs Guild, and Kickstarter/OGL. A hobbyist gets the experience of trying publish using DMs Guild and tries to build a name for themselves... but the jump to then trying to run a Kickstarter in order to actually become a for-profit design house is a big one. There's no place in the middle where "the best of the best" can go to receive the same amount of viewership that DMs Guild grants them, while not needing as many up-front "fans" or name-recognition in order to successfully pull off an OGL/KS. So anything that keeps DMs Guild itself from becoming a more intermediate step for those writers is saddening and I can understand the frustration. But I don't think that's really what DMs Guild was ever meant to be ...

  • 03:49 PM - Tormyr mentioned Morrus in post Suggest the enemy for my 5E war campaign?
The campaign guide for 5e War of the Burning Sky should be coming out within a week or two. It contains a warfare supplement that Morrus created for the 3.5 version. The encounters are set around specific tasks the PCs can complete that influence the battle as a whole such as taking a strategic point, assassinating a high-level enemy official, defending against an enemy surge, etc.

  • 05:55 AM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post A 308-Page Paperback WOIN Core Rulebook For Under $10!
Can someone tell me what all these acronyms stand for Truthfully, I only know some of them. WOIN stands for “What’s OLD is NEW,” which is a lovely pun used as the general name for the generic system that Morrus designed. OLD is the fantasy incarnation of WOIN, NEW is the sci-fi version, and NOW is the modern/contemporary equivalent. Despite OLD, NEW, and NOW being structured like acronyms, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an official statement on what they stand for, and any guesses I might have would just be pure conjecture on my part.

  • 01:50 AM - DM Howard mentioned Morrus in post Here Are Your Official Top 10 Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2018
The new Facebook/Twitter/Print/etc. buttons that won't stay hidden are quite annoying! They cover the text of the article. After hiding them, as soon as I scroll the article they unhide. Very much agreed! @Morrus. just a clarification, Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are not the same brand. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it would be beneficial for newcomers to either IP to not become confused.

  • 07:41 PM - Woundweaver quoted Morrus in post Dual wielding and Weapon size question
I think you just answered your own question! :) Not really, since it begs the question why wouldn't every person buy an undersized weapon if it does the same damage as the regular sized weapon, costs the same, weighs less and is more concealable due to being a smaller size.

  • 04:24 PM - DEFCON 1 quoted Morrus in post Bethesda Comments On Accusations Of Plagiarizing D&D Adventure
Sometimes people make genuine apologies and do try to do better. Well, make your mind up! Either they're cynically apologising because they have to, or they don't have to because it makes no difference. It can't be both things! :) (Well, in this case they're not; or at least haven't yet). Heh heh... well, sure it can! ;) it's that these companies usually don't feel the need to apologize for every little thing that people get up in arms over... but when something does blow up and someone in the company does say "We gotta do this!", it's not because the company on the whole is genuinely sorry, they do it just to get people off their backs. And that's cause most people don't actually care. As soon as the company says "Oh, we're very sorry this occurred, we didn't mean to upset anyone", people go "Oh, okay, good!" and then go on with their lives as though nothing ever happened, never thinking about it ever again. Because the action and the apology has literally NO impact on t...

  • 09:28 PM - variant quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 5
So it turns out that it just takes one dragon to win everything. Dany could have flown to Westeros at any time in the last few years with just one of her three dragons and burned Kings Landing to the ground, and anywhere else she wanted to. All that political chess, all those armies, the Dothraki, the North, the Unsullied, none of it mattered in the end. Just one dragon beats everything. It’s a nuclear weapon. The dragons had to grow up, but they've always been likened to weapons of mass destruction.

Dany could have flown to Westeros at any time in the last few years with just one of her three dragons and burned Kings Landing to the ground, and anywhere else she wanted to. Especially since there wouldn't have even been the ballistae to worry about. All that political chess, all those armies, the Dothraki, the North, the Unsullied, none of it mattered in the end. Just one dragon beats everything. It’s a nuclear weapon. Except for the rock Jon was hiding behind in episode 3. If they had just quarried that kind of rock for the walls and the keep, she would have been in trouble. ;)

  • 04:54 PM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post On the Origins of Dragon Species
I’m not sure I understand the criticism. Just because we didn’t discover something until the 1700s doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. If dragons were real, nature wouldn’t limit their species only to to things humans had discovered. Yeah, this. I mean, I'm all for rethinking assumptions and trying to make the game more fun. But trying to rationalize design ideas by arguing that they are more historically accurate, or more scientific, or whatever, is kinda pointless in my opinion. So let's say we reconfigure all the dragons to meet the expectations of the OP. How will that make the game more fun? That's kind of all that matters. (And, no, "inconsistencies in the fluff annoy me and make the game less fun" is not a persuasive argument.)
  • 04:37 PM - Aldarc quoted Morrus in post On the Origins of Dragon Species
I’m not sure I understand the criticism. Just because we didn’t discover something until the 1700s doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. If dragons were real, nature wouldn’t limit their species only to to things humans had discovered. It would potentially limit how they are called or how we understood their natures. But I'm not sure if it is reasonable that D&D (and its world of magic) would be restricted to a Middle Age conception of science, philosophy, or alchemy.
  • 01:52 AM - variant quoted Morrus in post Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4 "The Last of the Starks"
It’s Westeros. It’s not medieval England. She would pride herself on whatever the writers say she prides herself on in that fictional culture. Yes, it's Westeros which is heavily grounded in Medieval England. She is not embarrassed to be a maiden in the books. The writers have gone completely against the books in most regards to culture and language since they left the books behind at season 5. There's a reason the show writers left out the "In the name of of the Maid I charge you to protect all women" part of the knighting ceremony.

  • 09:54 PM - kenmarable quoted Morrus in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
That’s exactly how WotC produced several hardcovers. Still counts! I'm not saying it doesn't. Sorry if my comment was too brief and unclear, but my main point it towards those who think this is some sign that Paizo is worried PF 2e might fail and are shifting towards being a 5e publisher. For one thing, with WotC it was different because their staff was still working on other 5e system books. With Paizo, they are not. Their staff is still focused on PF. For another thing, Paizo is having fans pay for the creation of it. So depending on how much art & layout work is outsourced to Legendary Games as well, Paizo might have close to zero investment of their own resources in 5e beyond maybe warehouse space and distribution, I guess. So, sure, it absolutely counts that they are publishing a 5e book. But in regards to those who wonder if Paizo is making a major shift to 5e, they are doing pretty much the bare minimum of work and resources on their side to produce it. They aren't even pu...

So did anybody die in that massive battle at the end (other than Iron Man)? Iron Man Vision didn't come back (died pre-snap) Natasha NPCs. Many Bothans. Notice how there was not a disclaimer about "No Bothans were hurt or killed in the making of this film."
  • 10:14 PM - MarkB quoted Morrus in post Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD
Could they use the stones to bring Stark back? The only people they bring back via the stones are the Snapped, and as I recall it's suggested at some point that they can't bring back people who were outright killed via other means. Besides, using the stones is what killed Stark. Whoever used them to bring him back would likely suffer the same fate.

And illegal if that’s true. d. And then there may be one individual who is/was 16 at the time, which is a separate issue- also difficult because the one person I saw quoted indicated that she was 21 and he did ask about the age. That said, that would be the really, really, really bad one from a strictly legal P.O.V. Well, I can't say how the pics got out there, but so far, I've personally seen more than one account from an underage girl show screen shots of the dick pics they say he sent them. Maybe they are all lying, but it does beg the question how these underage girls got these pics if he didn't send them to them. I suppose one could photoshop their screen shots to make it look like he sent it to them, but I find that dubious. As far as why we care (to the other poster who asked)? I don't. Not about the cheating. None of my business. But illegal activity and preying on kids? Yeah, I'm concerned about that

So did anybody die in that massive battle at the end (other than Iron Man)? Nobody named - I presume some Wakandans and sorcerers bought the farm, but all other named characters survive. And why didn’t Chewie get a medal. I mean Black Widow get a funeral? I am pretty sure there's no good answer to that one.
  • 08:07 PM - Joshua Randall quoted Morrus in post A Look Inside Ghosts of Saltmarsh
It's interesting the order they've done the adventures -- the original Saltmarsh trilogy opens it, as expected, but Salvage Operation and Isle of the Abbey are inserted before The Final Enemy.Belated reply, and hopefully I'm not just repeating what someone else already said, but... The Final Enemy was infamously a meat grinder back in the day, for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who remembers it or has read the synopsis. (Hint1: out. Hint2: numbered.) In addition, it was possible for the PCs to come out of Danger at Dunwater with less XP than expected if they are less murderhobo-y than normal. Combine that two and you could have an underleveled, underequipped (i.e. hasn't found as much magic lootz) party going into a really tough The Final Enemy. So, it makes perfect sense to me to re-order the adventures to let the PCs level / gear up a bit before they tackle Final Enemy.
  • 06:07 PM - MarkB quoted Morrus in post Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD
So does past Thor now no longer have Mjolnir, since future Thor turned up and stole it and took it back to the future? And when future Thor was talking to past mum, and called Mjolnir to him, did he rip it out of past Thor's hand? Is past Thor standing around with a confused look on his face wondering where Mjolnir just flew off to? (I don't remember where past Thor is at that point in time?) It seems to be more the case that any past they visit becomes an alternate universe. So alt-past-Thor loses his hammer, but also his girlfriend isn't dying of infinity-stone-poisoning anymore.
  • 04:59 PM - Janx quoted Morrus in post Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD
Oh, did he take Mjolnir with him? I missed that! yep, Cap had it with him when he got on the platform.

I think the 2019 avengers are relying on the 5-second Rule. So if they steal it from the past and return it right after they stole it, it's OK. So Cap went back in time at the end to return all the stones (and quill wakes up with a headache) along with Mjoljnir on Asgard. Past Thor is used to forgetting where he left his hammer, so it's no big deal.

I think he has a point in that they were early examples of the mainstreaming of geek culture. It grew from then, but that's when geek culture started to feel like it was mainstream. The effects, of course, knocked on over years. Yep, before LOTR, it's was pretty dry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fantasy_films_of_the_1990s Though, I still think it's because of the Internet that "geek" is now cool. We don't use "nerds" anymore but it's pretty much the same.

Huh! I’d have bet a lot in it being Kobold Press. I've got a feeling that Wolfgang and team are VERY busy with their own material. :) I'm not entirely sure it'd be worth their while to do a conversion bestiary (profits likely split with Paizo) rather than just producing Tome of Beasts 3. Cheers!
